    Asada taco

Soft opening day for Antojitos Lucero - Cocina Mexicana in Camarillo, CA. If you have been a big fan of Panaderia Lucero just wait until you try out their brick and mortar restaurant a few steps away, Antojitos Lucero. A place to sit, indulge, and relax with some comforting Mexican food and drinks. I can't tell you how lucky the locals are of Camarillo and the 805 to have this spot. Antojitos Lucero is all heart. You feel it the moment you walk in. The restaurant is spotless, open, and inviting. The menu is impressive serving up stellar breakfast & lunch classics like chilaquiles, tamales, tortas, tacos and menudo/pozole on the weekends. They also still serve their stellar pastries and cakes in a smaller quantity here. The service is exceptional and warm here. Dani helped me out today and she couldn't have been more lovely. She answered all of my questions and helped me place a generous breakfast order (my eyes were bigger than my stomach). I loved watching the staff in the back kitchen prepping all of the food fresh. Asada sizzled on the grill, eggs were fried, it was a lovely sight to see and smell. Walked away with green sauce Chilaquiles, Pork and Cheese Tamales, Asada Tacos, and of course my favorite Tres Leches Cake in Camarillo. Please make sure you stop by on Saturday for their grand opening, but if you can't wait like me, then please come check them out today or tomorrow for their soft opening :)

We like the bakery so have been to the restaurant a couple times. They sincerely appreciate the business and put love and care into each dish. We ordered ten street tacos to go and they packaged the onions and cilantro on the side for us. Looking forward to going back.

Walking in, they don't greet you or smile at all. The energy is not welcoming but cold & serious. They forgot to provide utensils on a to-go order & I had to drive back to the place. They also only provided 1 tiny salsa for 2 big tamales. Tamales were extremely dry & barely any meat provided. It lacks flavor & all you're eating is mostly masa. The green salsa helped with the dryness but didn't have a pleasant taste. The smell of the place isn't pleasant either. I wanted to give it a try but Doris panaderia in camarillo by fedex, is much more authentic, the tamales are juicy & they have a great meat to masa ratio, with great flavor. 1st & last time coming to this spot for food. Their panaderia next door is good though.

The food is great quality and consistent. I haven't eaten one thing I haven't liked. You can tell everything is homemade and that the kitchen and front service really cares about the food and service they provide. I feel very welcomed whenever I come in. My friend is very picky with her Mexican food (being raised with home cooked Mexican food growing up) and even she liked it! This is my go to Mexican restaurant in Camarillo and overall Ventura County!

They also have a great variety of drinks, including micheladas, Mexican Coke, and other options. As far as customer service, unfortunately, that part of our experience wasn't the greatest. The gentleman who took our order didn't greet us or smile and seemed very overwhelmed or stressed, which made the interaction feel a little unwelcoming. One important thing I brought up while ordering was that someone in our party has a shrimp allergy. We were told there is cross-contamination and that they're unable to accommodate the allergy. I appreciated being told upfront, but this was the first time we've encountered this at a local taco restaurant. If you have a serious shrimp or seafood allergy, I would definitely keep this in mind and consider avoiding the restaurant for safety. Pricing is pretty reasonable, with options ranging roughly from $2-$20. The portions were great, and the food itself was good quality. The asada tacos and tortas had great flavor, and you could tell they were using quality ingredients. The salsas were SUPER spicy but really flavorful! The horchata wasn't personally my favorite, but it was still decent. Overall, the aesthetic, food quality, portions, and pricing were great. Customer service could definitely be improved, and anyone with a seafood allergy should be aware of the cross-contamination risk before visiting.

Our table of 6 celebrated my birthday. which they made very special. The food was amazing. So amazing none of us took photos, we started eating and sharing each other's dishes. Another guest had Lola's enchiladas with mango chipotle sauce; a flavor combo none of us had before. It was delicious. Their chips are homemade with a little salt and really delicious, too. The taquitos, kids cheeseburger, taco salad and chimichanga were just as tasty. We also had daiquiris and a guava margarita. They were well balanced and the best ever cocktails. Immediately in front of you, is a grocery store with fresh produce, drinks, etc.. There's no real service to speak of. You go in, look at the menu above and behind the register, make your choices and pay the employee at the till. When I went, no one offered to answer any questions or sell me anything. The woman at the counter next to the young man behind the register just watched me while I checked stuff out. On the left between a dark room and the grocery, were large racks of Mexican pastries and breads. I have tried Mexican pastries in the past and have not really enjoyed them. But "hope springs. . ." and all that. So, seeing a decent amount of plump pastries and breads that looked incredibly fresh and enticing, I used the provided tongs and placed a few into a bag (also provided). I'm still thinking about going back for more. They were all moist and flavorful with fillings that were delicately sweetened. So so good. I perused the menu acting as though I hadn't come there for one item only - a breakfast burrito with bacon. I liked the breakfast burrito I had here and would definitely recommend it. It's a full meal capable of holding you for a long time. I would probably want to eat one again before a long day of chores, shopping, or a strenuous hike. I need to feel like I earned the calories. And I wasn't hungry until dinner. Behind the register is a doorway to a whole other experience. The kitchen is safely and sanitarily located behind tall countertops and a refrigerated section. I was excited to see the variety of offerings from south of the border. Are you hankering for a goody you can only get in Mexico, come here and look. You'll probably find it. That dark room I mentioned earlier is a huge dining area with dark iconic furniture that I discovered on my first trip to Mexico many years ago. Black leather and wood barrel shaped chairs with black leather topped round tables scattered around a dark room with black tile floors. There were patrons eating at a couple of the tables who looked like regulars. The size of the dining area made me think it would be a great place for a large gathering. I'm now wondering if they ever have live music and if they would be able to accommodate a large birthday party. There are a couple of picnic tables in the back, off the parking lot, where I ate my meal. I believe the notion of putting tables back there was more like an afterthought because it's not decorated and it's right along the back walkway from parked cars to the restaurant door. It's not regularly attended to, I guess, as there were remnants of another customer's meal at the other table. I also had the thought that it might just be a place for the employees to take a break and eat a meal in peace. Overall, I will be coming back and trying other menu items, baked goods and products from the other room.

The decor is a blast from the past and looks like it did inside when I first stated coming here, so they haven't done much to the place but to me that gives this spot that old school charm. I personally love the old time decor and owls all around the restaurant. I find their booths to be cozy and comfortable. The menu is also pretty large with all of the classic dishes. The staff have always been nice when I've come in. They are attentive, friendly and the food is whipped up quickly. Happy hour menu seems to bring in the crowds but I do think there are other places with a happy hour menu that gives you more bang for your buck than here. The food is average in many ways but very comforting. Probably I'd rate all of the different dishes I've tried between 3.5-4 stars depending what you get. I really love their albondigas soup and that's one of my favs. Never steers me wrong. Also their crunchy shell tacos aren't bad. I came for a beef taco with rice and beans and was pleasantly surprised. This isn't Michelin star food people - just classic no frills Mexican food that seems to have kept them operating all this time, impressive if you ask me. My last pro tip is the margaritas are stellar. Huge fan of their mango marg and I'd come back for this alone. Just at $15 that's a little hefty for a hole in the wall spot like this. Same with the food. Two margs and two simple smaller main plates ran us $70 after tax and tip. Seems like it's hard to get a good deal nowadays but for keeping these local gems open, I'll always do my best to support.
