The food was pretty good. The service was not. It took too long to get someone to take our order. It took very long to get our food. There were 5 people in our group. When the food came there was 4 meals plopped down on the table. Nothing said about the missing food. It was 5 minutes before the 5th meal showed up. None of the meals that have their home made tortillas came with tortillas. When we asked they brought a basket with 2 tortillas and said they were making more now. 5 minutes later more tortillas arrived. 3 of the 5 meals included tortillas. When done we waited over 10 minutes before we tried to flag down our server. Finally paid. The ambiance is nice. The food is really pretty good. The fried, cute, flower shaped tortilla chips were delicious and the salsa served with it was also quite good. I wish I could remember which dishes we ordered but unfortunately the menu names escaped my mind. The server, a friendly young man arrived with a smile and patiently answered my questions regarding the menu. I had a pineapple horchata. It was served in a terra-cotta tumbler. I will definitely order it again because it was not too sweet and the pineapple flavor was prominent. I didn't need a refill. Hubby ordered fish which I tasted and will order for myself next time. I felt very hungry so ordered the five enchiladas plate. It came with a sprinkling of fresh cabbage, sides of rice and puréed pinto beans. It also had a whole, roasted jalapeño and roasted baby onion. There was a reasonable amount of sauce which was beautifully and delicately spiced. It made the dish quite easy to manage as I didn't have to move through the sauce to get the right amount and added to the texture without overpowering the dish. Of course, I took home leftovers and enjoyed them again the following day. The flaw in our service were the plates and serving ware. Many of the unique and pretty terracotta plates and bowls were chipped and cracked. I only noticed it when I'd finished eating. This keeps me from giving a five star review. The restaurant is cavernous but not crowded. Initially, I made the mistake of sitting under the stereo speaker but when I moved to a more comfortable chair at the table, the music was not too loud. The artwork is well done and the atmosphere is spacious and well appointed. The tables and chairs are the same as you would find in many restaurants in mexico - leather and strong, dark wood - comfortable. I will go again but next time I will ask that they check the plates for cracks and chips and not serve me on them. It's especially important because I am aware how easily one can become ill from eating bad food but cracked, chipped and unclean dishes and other utensils can harbor many health problems. Dear Rosa Madera, please instruct your employees on best handling practices for your beautiful food and service ware. After hearing some coworkers rave about this place, I decided to take my wife for dinner on a Friday night and they were PACKED!! Luckily the bar area wasn't busy so we got seated immediately there. Service here was great and our server was on it. The menu here is extensive with a great variety of items. My wife and I decided to share our meal and orders the camarones Zanendaeros and a combo plate with Enchiladas Verdes and a Chilli relleno and I kid you not our food was a 10/10. This place came recommended by a friend and it definitely did not disappoint! It's beautiful inside! The food was soooo goood! A little spicy for me; but not so spicy that I stopped eating. I ordered the mole enchiladas and they not only looked beautiful, but the flavors were spot on! The tortillas are homemade and they were stuffed full of chicken. For dessert, we had the fried ice cream and it too was not only beautifully presented, but it tasted so good too! The service was exceptional! We had a very interesting experience here. We went on a weekend night and discovered that there is live music. Okay, cool, that's fun. There was a wait for tables, but they text when your table is ready, so we were able to wait in the car. Also great. We were seated RIGHT next to the band. We were a little bummed that this meant we couldn't talk, but oh well. They went on a break right after we sat down and the amplifier they had been using starts BLASTING recorded music. Now, mind you, my spouse and I are big concert goers. We've been seeing hard core bands in small clubs for over 25 years. We are accustomed to loud music. But there is loud and then there is ear damaging noise. That's what this was. No one should be seated this close to the band. But there weren't other tables. I put napkins in my ears and hoped it would go quickly. There were large parties with small children everywhere. I'm a mom. I know it's hard to get kids to sit still sometimes. But there seemed to be no effort to get kids to sit still. They were running all over. At one point a kid almost knocked over our table. About 20 minutes later the band came back and it was so loud my whole body shook. No amount of napkin in my ear could make this better. We left. Why did I still give this 3 stars? Been waiting a long time to try this spot because of all the hype and reviews from friends -- and we finally made it! As expected, the line was HUGE and it was extremely crowded. I highly recommend making a reservation. We had a party of 8 and booked for 7pm. They did let us know over the phone that the entire party had to be present to be seated, which we completely understood. Everyone arrived by 6:45, we checked in around 6:40, and ended up being seated at about 7:30pm. It was super busy, so it was understandable. Once seated, they greeted us and brought out chicharrones with Valentina -- which I loved. We love a cultural restaurant moment They offer a lot of traditional Mexican dishes and a detailed drink menu with plenty of options. I ordered a cucumber and lemon agua fresca and it was delicious -- not too sweet, just perfectly balanced. For appetizers, we got the trio (chimichanga, tacos de tinga, and al pastor nachos) and that was a solid 10/10. So flavorful and definitely a great choice for the table. For my main dish, I ordered the molcajete. It was good, but not the best I've had. I think it needed a bit more seasoning and flavor. I'd rate it a 6/10 -- not bad, just not amazing. The only downside was our waitress. She didn't seem to be having the best day and came off a little irritated, especially with the size of our party and some of the questions we asked. It wasn't the most pleasant service experience, but we didn't let that ruin the night. Now let's talk ambiance -- 10/10. They had a live group singing old-school Mexican jams, which I absolutely loved because it brings back so many memories. The inside is beautiful with gorgeous murals all around. The vibe is definitely there. I would come back, maybe with a smaller group, and try different dishes to see if something else stands out more. We stopped by Rosa Madera in Camarillo on a Sunday afternoon after a morning of shopping and decided to give it a try. I had actually been to this location years ago when it was a pub and later another Mexican restaurant, so I was already familiar with the space and thought it would be fun to see what they'd done with it. Right when we walked in, we were greeted by a really friendly hostess and seated immediately, which was a great start. The restaurant itself is beautiful, modern, colorful, and inviting without feeling overdone. They also had live mariachi music, which added a fun and lively energy to the atmosphere. Shortly after sitting down, our waiter came by for drinks and brought out duritos with hot sauce and lemon juice instead of the usual chips and salsa. If you've never had duritos before, they are those light, crunchy Mexican chips made from flour that puff up when fried. I honestly thought that was such a fun touch and a nice change from the standard setup you see everywhere else. For drinks, my partner ordered a beer and I tried the Hot Papacito cocktail, which I really enjoyed. It was flavorful, refreshing, and honestly one of my favorite parts of the meal. I ordered the asada nachos, and we also shared another entrée of sopes de asada and birria. Overall, the food was decent. Nothing bad at all, just not especially memorable. The rice was your pretty standard Mexican rice, totally fine, but nothing that really stood out. Honestly, most people compare restaurant rice to homemade family recipes anyway, so that's always a tough category to win. The refried beans were probably my least favorite part. The flavor itself was okay, but the texture was very thin and smooth, almost like a soup. I personally prefer refried beans with a little more thickness and texture. The biggest downside for us was the setup for the live mariachi music. The musicians were talented and entertaining, but some sections of the restaurant felt a little too small for the volume and size of the group. At times it was difficult to hear each other across the table. I think the experience would flow a little better if the mariachi setup was kept more toward the open side of the restaurant where the music could fill the space more naturally. Overall, Rosa Madera has a beautiful atmosphere, friendly staff, fun drinks, and a lively vibe. The food was okay, but the experience as a whole was enjoyable. I'd give it about 4 stars and would still recommend trying it at least once if you're in the area and looking for a fun spot with live music and cocktails. read more

My cousins wanted to celebrate their birthday here. We arrived at 11, and even though they were supposed to be open, they didn't open until about 10 minutes after. I really wanted to like this restaurant because the food was honestly very good. We visited for the first time during the week and, while the food was great, the service was disappointing. Our server never made eye contact and spent the entire interaction looking down at the device he was using to enter the order. Instead of greeting us or asking if we were ready to order, he simply said, "What do you want to order?" and "What do you want to drink?" in a way that felt rude and unwelcoming. To make matters worse, my horchata was served in a broken cup. The drink cost around $6, and the cup was cracked enough that it was leaking and spilling. When I politely asked if I could get a different cup because it was broken, the server looked irritated and acted annoyed that I even brought it up. I wasn't complaining about the drink itself I only asked because it was literally spilling due to the damaged cup. We decided to give the restaurant another chance and returned on Father's Day. Unfortunately, we had a similar experience with a different server. She was not friendly, seemed annoyed, and was not attentive to our table. We asked for lemon and never received it until we mentioned it to another employee at the front. Even after that, her attitude remained rude and unhelpful. It's disappointing because the food is genuinely good, but customer service is a big part of the dining experience. My friend ordered a small side of sauces and was charged $2. ridiculous. The Enchiladas Verde with chicken was extremely tough and chewy. I ordered with all rice and the clay bowl it was served in had a huge chip on the rim. On a positive note, Camilla our waitress was terrific and very personable. I just wanna say that this location has an incredible staff. They were so helpful getting us accommodated for a birthday party last night with a large party. We were able to sneak a cake in that we made. Our server was incredibly tentative impatient with us. I cannot believe how quickly we were able to get our food orders and how fast it came out appetizers and entrées. Everything was so delicious. I recommend trying everything I think the Carne Asada of fries and the chorizo cheese dip were the stars of the night, though for our table. It's so cute inside. The music can get a little loud, but it doesn't last all night when it's live. It's actually a pretty cool set up that they've got plenty of space to dance if you want to. The food was delicious. They have been in the area for 2 years. Now when I visit Oxnard where I have my beach house this will definitely be a stop. I tried the street tacos and the pastor were delicious. The mole enchiladas and chile relleno were good. For me the chile relleno has to be made with queso fresco and add some more spice. The chile relleno are made with mozzarella cheese. We had an amazing experience with excellent service and fabulous food. - San Juan-- a mezcal based incredibly delicious and well balanced cocktail that's almost too big for one! The Aguachile is fresh and tart, but could be a little spicier! But delicious all the same. - Mezcalita -- yes pls! Delicious. - Molcajete - absolutely delicious-- well made and seasoned steak, shrimp, nopales, cheese-- the chicken was a bit dry but still tasty. The corn tortillas are handmade and so yummy.
