Incredible food and a quirky attitude, this restaurant is just a fun place to eat! I had the she-crab soup and it was silky, crabby, and delicious. Very clean flavor. I moved on to the fried oysters with hoecakes and slaw. Trust me, treat this like a taco. Fold the hoecake around some oysters, top with slaw and remoulade. Devour! Spicy, creamy, sweet, and salty. Really yummy! My wife had the smoked chicken (I finished it "for her"). Beautiful smoke ring and smoke flavor, moist and pulls away from the bone, and a sticky, gummy, spicy skin. So great! Again, I suggest a hoecake taco. Hoecake, shredded chicken, NC BBQ sauce, and some sticky sweet molasses. So good! I sucked the meat off of every bone! We then moved on to dessert. She had a peach cobbler that had a kind of spice cake taste to it. Really nice with a scoop of homemade ice cream. I had a creamy, tangy buttermilk pie that really reminded me of my childhood in the South. For my money, this is the best restaurant in Urbanna! read more

I ate the she crab soup which was adequate, excellent flavor but somewhat tired in the mug in that it had been made well before and was thickened as one would expect from a soup that spent the day in a pot on the heat. It was a busy night so we waited for our server for everything. Following the soup I had the brisket which was done to a tee but came sliced on the plate with two hoecakes, savory pancakes that I found dull in the mild offering and not at all to my taste, dry and a flavor that did not appeal to me. So, my half empty plate was placed in front of me. It was arguably the worst presentation I have ever paid for, two three inch pancakes with a modest pile of undressed or embellished, grayish brisket. The brisket was well cooked but in appearance unappetizing. I choked it down with a combination of molasses and their Texas sauce. I like a sweeter sauce for brisket. Maybe I am a barbecue Philistine but other brisket joints in the region offer several sauces, one for most every palate. Something Different was different but not in the manner I'd hoped for. The capper was the obviously poor service. It is one thing to be busy. It is another to be busy and obviously trying to turn the tables so fast that you bang chairs of seated customers, look painfully at a table that is winding up its meal, to be inattentive when an expeditious manner would achieve your goal, to get the money and seat another four covers. As is true of all dinner service today, the bill should reflect a quality meal that one is glad to have experienced not one better forgotten. I will be reminded when I look at my credit card statement, unfortunately, of the big woman who should learn that no one enjoys your overworked, pained expressions and clumsy transit around the floor. As a facilitator she is the worst part of the experience. She was not involved in my meal but I knew she was there every time she dropped an order or set up a recently vacated table. She is a clod. On balance, I may try this experience again but most likely not. Every restaurant has bad days but this combined too many poorly scripted elements that demonstrate a lack of leadership in the front of the house and boredom in the back. In a less pressurized seating this may be good. But I have my doubt's. read more

Was highly recommended as a place to visit while I was on vacation in Virginia. It is located in a quaint little town but that is the end of the ambience. The restaurant was decently loud and the service was terrible. Our waitress did not seem very interested in tending to our table and at various times looked at our table and walked to other ones seeing that our cups were empty and service was clearly needed. I have the Virginia sandwich which was decent but nothing to write home about. I would not visit again based on mediocre food and subpar service. read more

Clearly a favorite of the locals, but I think they were having an off day on our visit. We stopped in for breakfast. We were seated immediately, but then waited about 20 min before ordering, and about 45 minutes before any food showed up. One might expect that if there were people lined up at the door, but the place was only about 2/3 full. My wife ordered The Easy, and I ordered the crabmeat omelette. I have to say might first reaction to the omelette was negative, but it does grow on you, and really isn't bad. The omelette itself was very well made, and if we ever go back I would try a different type of omelette. My wife also tried a beignet, which you wouldn't expect in a place like this, but it was very good. This is a dive type place, but the food overall was good. I would give it another shot on our next visit to Urbanna. read more

This place is a real treat. Almost everything is made from scratch, and tastes delicious. I got the Urbanna Lemonade, which came in a Mason jar and was well worth $8. I also got the crab cake sandwich, which was to die for. Normally, crab cakes are over-fried and hardly have any crab---at Something Different, this is not the case. There are no fillers in their crab cakes, and the crab cakes are seasoned to perfection. I also loved the remoulade that came with my sandwich---I couldn't get enough of it. I got a cup of their homemade grasshopper ice cream for dessert, which was delicious. Try the ice cream if you can! read more

We visited this cute establishment 2 days in a row and had great service both times. Their wine, beer by the bottle & tap list is amazing!!! I had the smoked salmon salad which was large and very good. My husband had the hot dog that comes with homemade chips. Fortunately he got a side of onion rings as well. He said the chips were soft and inedible. We came back the next morning for breakfast and had bloody Mary's with their own homemade mix which was very good and also had mimosas. I had the spinach and goat cheese omelet that was huge but so good I had to finish it. My husband had the egg Mornay and finished his as well. I have to say you cant beat the prices! We tried to save room for adult ice cream so we were going to get some to go but none of the flavors were appealing. We'll definitely be returning!! read more

I had the same onion rings and they were just as amazing as before. However, when i ask for a rare hamburger, I really expected it to be bloody.. this one was well done..all the way through. HOWEVER they did take it back and not charge me, so that was good! And the onion rings were enough to fill me up anyway. You must try these onion rings!!! read more

I've gotta admit, I really miss their old smaller location. I know the move into town was probably necessary, but some of the charm was lost. it feels more like a bar that sells bbq than the hidden gem it once was, but time marches on, and I'm glad they have been successful enough to warrant a move. We usually get our food to go and take it to the town dock to eat if the weather is good. The food is still yummy though, and service is good, even when they were slam packed for oyster fest. Their bbq is great, and the hand cut fries are exceptional. I love that they have Mexican coke in glass bottles and alcholic ice cream!! We usually get takeout on the way home from the river. We would stop more, but it is fairly expensive for barbeque. We often end up getting a pound of bbq to take home from Chad's dads bbq (the nice couple that sets up in their RV at the park n ride outside of Saluda on the weekends) instead, as it is much cheaper, and something different is often closed by the time we leave. They close at 3pm on Sundays. read more

Wow, what a disappointment. We got the brisket melt and steak sandwich. The brisket was hard and dry and had no flavor. The steak sandwich was bland. First time going back in almost 2 years an this place is still amazing. I always get the Applechain which is a hotdog with apple butter and mustard (sounds strange but it's the best hotdog you'll ever eat). My boyfriend got the ribs and BBQ and that was also really delicious. The dessert section of the Resturaunt is all homemade and their ice cream is the best I've ever had. The butter pecan is my personal favorite and they also have adult ice creams if you want to try something a little different. If you want good food for a great price I highly recommend. read more

Been to Urbanna twice and this is a must stop place when here. The new ice cream dessert shop attached inspired us to do a backwards dinner... Dessert first and then our meal! Pies and bread pudding were excellent. Then we sampled the menu... We had just about one of everything. Except the salmon, they were out of salmon. Good craft beer selection, something for all tastes. After dinner we waited outside the door to take the trolley ride for $.25 all over town. Fun night in quiet Urbanna. read more

My best friend and I stayed at the Chesapeake Inn for a girl's relaxation weekend on January 17th and ate here at Something different since it was right across the street. I ordered Hoecakes and Salmon and my best friend ordered Crab cakes and hoecakes. We both ordered beignets for dessert. I enjoyed my entree, I didn't like the sauce that came with the salmon but I loved their homemade tarter sauce, I emptied that all over the salmon. What a pleasant surprise! I've been coming to enjoy the river with my girlfriend's family for nearly four years and never discovered Urbanna. It's got quite the small historical downtown area but definitely worth a visit. There were about 4 restaurants that were busy on the main block of downtown. We first went to the cafe on the corner but they operate on a seat yourself model. This meant a couple sat at a table for 8 and left our table high and dry. So we walked about 10 steps and stumbled upon this gem. It was the Sunday or Memorial Day weekend and we were seated within 15 minutes. The place dose breakfast food until 3pm and serves an assortment of cocktails alongside its impressive draft menu! We ordered the soft shell crab sandwich (served with 2 crabs), the crab cake sandwich, the loaded fries and the buffalo chicken salad. Unfortunately they had run out of the habanero sauce that makes the buffalo chicken salad buffalo style but it was still really good. The portion on everything was fair but the portion on the salad was enormous. As it should be when we are paying for lettuce!! Interestingly the sandwiches come with housemade chips so if you're craving fries or any of their other sides it'll be about $3.50 extra. All in all I would definitely recommend it and come back! I look forward to ordering some hoe cakes and enjoying them with the table side molasses! read more

Decent. If you order fries for your kids (especially if they have sensory disorder) ask that no spices be put on it. We had to pay extra for fries without spices. I got a tuna melt but it was cold in the middle. Kids said the chicken tasted a little like fish. The probably use the same frier. Green beans had vinegar taste. Not bad but not what I've had before.
