We have now visited old city barbecue four or five times over the last couple years and I think I can safely suggest to you to go. What I have found over these years has been consistency. Each meal that we have had over the years has been very good. The same with the service staff and the appearance of the location. It has always been very good. We today where the place wasn't full with guests. Somewhere in between lunch and the dinner time frame. First time here. We'll start with the good. My daughter loved her chicken fingers and fries! My aunt said her chicken wings were good. I liked the taste of the cornbread!!!!! Now onto the meats. The ribs were decent. All of the food could've arrived at a better temperature. The brisket was tender. The greens.....need a total redo!!! They tasted burnt. Not edible at all. Wow!! This place is close to my work, every time I eat here the food is incredible. However, wait-staff is a bit slow getting to table and wait time takes a bit. Always have had a friendly server and is good for big and small groups to enjoy. One of my favorite parts of the plate was the brisket, it was so tender and well seasoned I highly recommend it. I also got an order of ribs and you know it's going to be good ribs once they fall off the bone. As for the sides, the coleslaw was refreshing and the fries were very crisp and fresh. Me and hubby decided, to try some good ole BBQ for lunch since it's so hard to find a good spot in North Carolina. I got the chicken platter with a side of collard greens and poblano Mac n cheese. The chicken wasnt dried at all! Omg the Mac n cheese was Soo cheesy, creamy and delicious. Collard greens had piexes of bacon in it and the seasoning was on point. You will see some sauces on the table to use, vinegar, sticky patches and tide water. I love the sticky patches mix with vinegar on the pulled chicken. It's like a BBQ sauce but way better. The platter was a hit for my tummy and taste buds! I did had a side Arugula salad, the dressing they use mix with the crumble cheese, slices of applies, nuts was so refreshing after walking for a good 4 hours visiting the Jamestown Settlement. Hubby had The Big Hal sandwich ( sliced brisket, pulled pork, seared pork belly, coleslaw,red onions, soy pickle jalapenos, bread and butter pickles on a brioche bun) with a side of fries. Hubby was a happy man and finish his whole plate lol. There are some outdoor sitting, if that is your thing. Service was quick and our server was friendly. Their brisket was soft and you have 3 different bbq sauce to choose from. I ordered their seared pork belly bahn mi and it was huge for me. We called in advance and were told they are open until 10pm on Friday night. When we arrived at 9pm. The staff told us they changed plan and decided to close at 9:15pm! She refused to serve us with very unfriendly attitude. It ends up we have to order to go. As family always come to this place when visiting Williamsburg, their service and attitude is way too bad to someone drove 3 hours to have dinner in the Friday evening. Very disappointed. I will be honest the food is fantastic!!! The ambiance is fitting for a BBQ joint. I love the casual and fun design of the restaurant. They played up the local and BBQ mix. The service was good but pushy. I didn't enjoy how hard my server was trying ro sell dessert. I wanted to ask her if she got commission on it. Back to the food though. I got the brisket dipper and holy smokes. The brisket was juicy and flavorful and the dip made it even better. I got the sweet potato fries which were good but not great. While in the area our hotel highly recommended this place. Little did we know, when we got here it was the same place we stopped a couple of years ago on our way home and it's still an awesome place. Right when we pulled into the parking lot, you could just tell it was going to be good by the smell. I got the Seared Pork Belly Bahn Mi, it almost brought me to tears, it was so fire. The pork belly was so tender, the flavor of the sandwich was 20/10. We almost had both their different types of Mac n cheese, and they were both amazing. The corn bread was on another level. I highly recommend the fried green tomatoes, it has pimento cheese and bourbon maple bacon (I loved it). We finished with their banana pudding, it was heavenly. Came for the pickle plate, stayed for the barbecue. I am a very simple woman, I love me a good pickle. And man oh man, are they serving up some phenomenal pickles here. If you even mildly enjoy pickles. You need to get the pickle plate. Moving on from pickled vegetables, holy moly, their meat is also fantastic. I got the ribs and the pork belly, and I could've swore. I saw the face of God in thatplate of meat. My partner got the ribs and the brisket and he said that he enjoyed his meal. And the rate he consumed it I can only testify that that is the truth. I have lived all over the south, and this barbecue joint rivals the barbecue, even in the deep south. Their mac & cheese was absolutely delicious, I got the garlic one. And apparently the cornbread is also phenomenal. All in all, I cannot recommend coming out to try this cozy, sweet barbecue joint. Went there on a Saturday at 4 PM the place was empty. Only a couple of other tables. Nothing was fresh. Everything was dry. Ordered the 4 meat platter and paid for double brisket and got 3 small dry pieces total. The waitress was super sweet, but I guess going in there on a slow day was not a great idea. Everything tasted like it was cooked yesterday. Brisket was dry, pulled pork was dry almost crunchy and the pork belly was crunchy and dried out. Came for a late lunch and it was fantastic! The food was fantastic and I wish had room to try their desserts. I ordered the buttermilk chicken thigh sandwich with ranch and buffalo. The chicken had a great crunch, moist and tender, and the perfect amount of sauce. The fries were perfectly crisp and covered in a flaky sea salt. The pulled pork sandwich and beans were great, tender juicy pork. And the smoked stout beans had a different take than any normal bbq beans. I ordered a sweet tea which was delicious and not overly sweet. The brisket dip sandwich was also great, it could've have more meat and the au jus really didn't pair well with the sandwich. Our service was good normal down south movement. We had our table within 10 minutes. We had drinks almost instantly.
