I went to a Women's conference in the area in March and my friend's specifically shared they wanted to eat here for dinner on the first night of the conference. I wasn't able to make it in time for dinner so I miseed out. When the opportunity came for a day trip to Williamsburg for shopping and lunch this month, this was the first place I suggested. I was blown away by how crowded it was. The parking lot was full and the line was very long. I was a little disheartened by how long it was, but it moved SO quickly. The wait gave us time to look at the menu. We ended up ordering 2 hotdog kids meals and 2 adults shared the combo dinner. We also ordered 2 sides of cornbread. The kids did not eat their food. We all shared the combo dinner and it was MORE than enough. Drinks are separate and come with cups you can take home and reuse. The cups and cornbread were my favorite things about the restaurant. My husband and I stopped by Pierce's Pitt Bar-Be-Cue and enjoyed a classic BBQ experience with a strong dose of nostalgia. The décor feels like a trip back to the 70s, with wood-paneled walls and orange and yellow seating...which actually adds to the charm and makes the restaurant stand out. We ordered the sliced brisket and the pulled pork, both of which were tender and tasty. The beans had little hot dogs in it. My husband liked that. I didn't eat it because I wasn't sure if the hot dogs were beef or not. (I only eat beef hot dogs) The macaroni and cheese was creamy and delicious, definitely one of the highlights of the meal. The collards could have used a bit more seasoning and vinegar for extra flavor, but the green beans were super flavorful and surprisingly impressive. Customer service was friendly and attentive, which we appreciated. For drinks, my Pepsi was unfortunately flat, while my husband's iced tea was just fine. On my way home from the beach, I was craving something we don't have at home. Babe said, "BBQ," so I pulled up Yelp and wow, it did not disappoint! We were literally 12 minutes away, hopped off at the next exit, and walked right in. Awww man... everything was magnificent! We liked how there was ample parking, especially since we heard that Sundays draws the crowds! Really enjoyed the jumbo sandwiches (pulled pork) with the tangy & sweet BBQ sauce. The potato salad very tasty as well with fresh celery! But wow, the hot sauce was INCREDIBLE. Hidden Gem in My Hometown! Although I was born and raised in Williamsburg, Virginia, I never used to visit Pierce's Pitt Bar-B-Que because I thought they only sold pork products--and I don't eat pork. But to my delight, I recently discovered that they offer much more, including delicious cheeseburgers, beef brisket, and both grilled and rotisserie-style chicken. Let me tell you--the cheeseburgers are out of this world! They take about 15 minutes to cook, and they are worth every single second of the wait. Ever since I tried one a few months ago, I make it a point to stop by once or twice a week just to get that burger. My nephew even said it's the best burger he's ever had--better than McDonald's or Burger King--and he's not easy to impress! My mother is also a fan. She loves the barbecue pork sandwiches. Sometimes she buys them by the pint or quart to eat throughout the week. When we go together, she always makes sure to get two super doc sandwiches to take home. She's hard to please too, but if I mention Pierce's, she and my nephew are suddenly dressed and ready to go! Let's talk sides--because Pierce's doesn't play around. They have macaroni and cheese, French fries, baked beans, onion rings, potato salad, Brunswick stew, and more. Every single one is flavorful and satisfying. They also offer fresh salads and dinner plates that are great for when you want a full, well-rounded meal. And the portions? Generous! I'm not sure now I understand what all the fuss is about. Smoked pork shoulder is not all that difficult. I tried a bite of the beef brisket that my sister ordered and it was a bit bland and dry. Got to say that one review said it was a little expensive, but it is not, especially for the amount of food. What we got: 2 cheeseburgers, 1 Jumbo BBQ sandwich, 1 pulled pork plate, 2 orders of hushpuppies, a piece of cornbread and 2 desserts; a brownie and the banana pudding. According to my son-in-law and granddaughter, the burgers were delicious, the onion rings also. The baked beans gotten as a side on the plate were enjoyed (I tried but the weinie slices put me off, flavor is very good though), potato salad was thought to have a little too much mustard. The BBQ sauce is just okay, but I'm from Eastern NC and greatly prefer a more vinergary sauce. Just our preference. The hushpuppies were very good, but I should have never gotten 2 orders! The cornbread is a tiny loaf and we all tried that. I know it would be even better hot with butter. Fries that were with the dinner (nice surprise) managed to stay crisp on the drive back to the Historic Powatan Resort, amazingly so, since they had to pick up Micky D's for the two youngest children. Desserts, skip the brownie, but the banana pudding was delicious. I mean almost as good as somebody's mama or grandma made, but topped with whipped cream, and not Cool Whip, but tasted like real whipped cream, with banana slices, yummy. They are just not good and pricey to boot. Had the JC special with upgrade of onion rings which is an upgrade on price too. Nothing about the meal was tasty except the fountain Pepsi. Especially disappointing were the onion rings that tasted frozen. The bread was not fresh either. Another visit had the bbq chicken which was meh and a custard pie to take home. It was just ok. Nothing special about either services at the cash register, but I still tipped well. I will say they did one thing exceptionally well both times. The dining room was spic & span. We were able to order immediately as we entered but, had to wait about 10 minutes to get our pulled port BBQ sandwich's. There were no tables available so we had dinner in our vehicle. The sandwiches were pilled high with pork and very tasty. The smaller sandwich was enough to fill us up. There were plenty of tables but, on a Sunday night not enough to accommodate everyone. Pierce's has been around since the early '70s, and they're always ranked for best BBQ in VA. We had a friend who stopped by and noted that this place was just awful - we were curious, just to see how bad it could be, for a later lunch - AHAHAA When we arrived, the place was packed! There is a line towards the front, in which you place your order and you wait for the number being called on your receipt. We were lucky enough to find a booth in the back. We ordered the Combo Dinner, which included: +5 oz of pulled BBQ chicken +5 oz of pulled pork BBQ +a dinner size rack of ribs (which just means, 3 ribs) +fries +a cup of coleslaw +and, hushpuppies The food wasn't too terrible, but it wasn't great, either. Out of the items, the pulled BBQ chicken was the most preferred; the house BBQ sauce is Carolina-esque, which is more vinegar-y, but still had that slight sweetness. The pulled pork was described as being 'nasty'; the ribs were extremely 'dried out'; the fries were just frozen fries, flash-fried; the coleslaw was just 'okay', but it was super bland; and, the hushpuppies had no flavor and were just overcooked nuggets. We also got their sweet tea, which they offer you a plastic cup with unlimited refills. The sweet tea was okay, being slightly in the syrupy category. Staff were friendly and efficient. They do have their own private lot, but note that going in and out off of Rochambeau can be a challenge with speeding cars. I can see why this place is popular, as Great Wolf Lodge is just down the road. We had the burnt ends. They were good but not as I expected. I have had burnt ends where the brisket ends were carmelized in the sauce not cooked and sauce poured on top. I don't understand all the great reviews, maybe these people are northerners who don't know great BBQ...cause this ain't it. This is all Sysco stuff that is just heated and served.
