Amazing barbecue spot! The food is incredible here, especially the brisket. I've enjoyed ordering the brisket platter, the brisket tacos, coleslaw, mac and cheese, hush puppies, chicken tenders, house ranch, and french fries. The brisket is tender and the fat is rendered beautifully. The coleslaw is seasoned well, crisp, and refreshing. The mac and cheese is so creamy, cheesy, and flavorful. The hush puppies are fried to crispy, golden perfection. The chicken tenders are juicy and crispy. Their house ranch is ridiculously good slathered on everything. Their french fries are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The ambiance in the outdoor seating is absolutely magical. Indoors, it can get a little noisier but it is still not too loud. The servers are friendly and will bring your food to you even if you are outside. I have driven past scoots on multiple occasions in the last five years, but I have never been, until tonight. My friend who lives in the Gloucester area recommended three different spots for dinner tonight and I chose scoots since I've never been. Turns out it's super popular on Saturday and Sundays and I can understand why there is ample seating on the interior and a cute outdoor area with maybe 20 tables. But don't quote me on that because whenever I have to guess how many jellybeans are in a jar I'm always way off. Lol! Once inside the menu is listed on a large chalkboard, which I was super grateful for and made it really easy to read and understand. My friend ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which is a combo they have it pairs very well with a coleslaw offered. I opted for half a chicken and some chicken wings barbecue style. The barbecue wings and the half chicken literally were just about the same thing so you can't go wrong but the next time I go, I'll probably just do the half chicken. The half chicken had a wonderful crispy skin. Their cucumber salad is a vinegar base and it is absolutely divine and I'm sure it will hit the spot on a hot summer day. The mac & cheese with nothing to rave about, but it was delicious. The corn muffins have corn in them and I thought that was a nice added touch. They're a little bit bigger than a mini muffin. The collards were also delicious. The staff I encountered were amazing. I asked questions and they answered honestly. I've been supporting this restaurant and loving their food and sending everybody I know there since they very first opened. Sad to say slowly the food has lost its original deliciousness. They used to have great smoked barbecue baked beans now they're straight from a can. The collards that I ordered were tough and 3/4 stalks. The brisket was unbelievably salty and half of it was inedible fat. I ordered the brisket family meal, which is $44. It used to come with a couple tiny corn muffins but now you have to buy them separately for a quarter apiece. I don't know how many family members this is supposed to feed. Certainly none of my family members wanted any of the fat, but it was definitely not even close to feeding my family. I can no longer support this restaurant and this was definitely the last order I will ever place with them. I've had issues in the past with having to wait extremely long amount of time for fried chicken and we've placed orders that the front forgot to inform the kitchen about several times . We've really loved this place over the years and continued to give them another chance repeatedly . Can't do it anymore. Very disappointing. I ordered the brisket burnt ends special today and was so disappointed. The small portion of expensive brisket was delicious, well, the edible parts. A good third of the meal was huge chunks of fat. I expected some fat, but to have so much jiggly fat was disgusting. I told my cashier/waitress, but she said she'd tell the cook and offered to let me add a cookie to my meal. I didn't want to buy a cookie because the meal was unsatisfactory. Scoots is no competition for Q Daddy's. I will never ever eat there again. read more

I visited Scoot's with family the day after Thanksgiving. They were steady with customers out and about on Black Friday. Family in the Gloucester area get take-out from Scoot's often and enjoy their BBQ. Oddly enough, we were hear for hot dogs. They are listed on their main menu but it seems like they might be better on the kid's menu. When we asked about what toppings were available they told us ketchup, mustard, and that they could add some chopped onions. Never fear, we're a resourceful group. I ordered a hot dog and a side of pulled pork and a side of their onion rings. Once our food came out we topped our previously-plain hot dogs with pulled pork, onion rings, and squeezed some of their bbq sauce on top. #chefskiss The hot dogs are a really good size and, if you're creative, you can create your own awesome fancy hot dog (mac and cheese and brisket anyone?) :) I'd return to Scoot's to try more of their BBQ and sides. read more

The brisket tacos were tasty. The burnt ends were good but hardly any bark and overly sauced. They also were served lukewarm. The okra was piping hot and tasty. Disappointed that for the price it didn't come with any type of cornbread or roll. Food is good but not proportional to price and quality. Collards were sweet which is new to me but they were good. My friends went to Olivia's and loved it. They mentioned this bbq place was the same owner and the parking lot is always full when I drive by. I swung in to see what's good. I chose a combo plate so I could get a taste several different items. I got the 3 meat (upgraded with ribs- think he called it Texas trio). I got baked beans and paid extra to add a side of macaroni and cheese. The food came reasonably fast, but was not hot. Nothing was anything more than hardly luke warm. The ribs were the better meat item of the three. The pulled pork was mostly flavorless (and cold) and the 3 small (probably end) slices of brisket failed in size comparison to the amount of pulled pork and the portion of ribs. The beans at bbq places alway excite me. Sometimes they have onion or bits of meat and can really make for a great side dish. These were unimpressive in flavor and I could probably count on one hand how many stringy strands of meat (possibly the pork based on texture and appearance) it had. It was disappointing because of how much I looked forward to it. The macaroni and cheese had the tiny elbow noodles and I couldn't make out the kind of cheese used. It was also mostly cold and a let down compared to other places. I don't mean to bash this place. I think my expectations created the disappointment. The service is outstanding and the owner was making rounds engaging with guests trying to ensure they had a good experience. I don't like to complain especially when you can tell someone really takes pride in their food. I didn't complain also because I didn't want a refund of any kind (I like supporting local businesses). Scoots has slid downhill. We have been going for years and usually it was good food. Unfortunately this will be the final time we go. Cold pulled chicken sandwich wasn't really pulled. Sandwich was chunky cold chicken with zero favor. My spouse got the 4 piece fried chicken plate. The leg and wing were cooked, the outer parts of the breast were cooked but pink inside. We didn't bother with the thigh. We threw out most of the cooked meat away and went home and heated some soup. Sorry guys you lost a customer for life. read more

I've seen it from the road so many times and never thought twice about it. We decided to go in and order. We said we were going to sit on the patio. They said they serve the food out there so it was awesome!! The food is seriously so good. The tacos were on special for $8.99 for 2.. pork, chicken, or brisket. You can actually choose the filling in both tacos. You don't have to get them the same. You get to pick one side. There was cheese, coleslaw, meat, and bbq sauce. Love this food at this place but the service has been awful as far as wait times. Been here twice now in the past month and have had to wait forever to finally receive the food. Last night I sat there for 15 minutes after paying for my to go order to be informed that they were out of what I ordered. There are 4 full tables in the place and most have signs waiting for food. Parking can be a problem because the word is out You are in the right place if you know great cue. But if you don't ---your best start is here I grew up in cue country raised on a ranch and our cue always started w the best meat. My mother had a pulled pork and brisket recipe that satisfied hundreds of the neighbors. I think Scoots got her recipe. The service is fantastic and the sweet tea is just as nice. So when I heard about this place winning the bracket in Virginia living magazine as the best barbecue joint in the state, I knew I had to try it. I figure Memorial Day was a perfect day to drive up and get some ribs. Suffice to say, this was completely ordinary meat. The ribs were cooked well in that they fell off the bone but they fell off almost too easily. When you bite into a rib, it should come off the bone easily but it shouldn't fall off as soon as you pick the rib up. And I really did not have enough seasoning on that rib. And the same thing with the brisket, there was some bark, which should have a ton of flavor, but the meat was pretty dry. I was given some of their sweet barbecue sauce and while it made the brisket easier to eat, it didn't make it that much better. I did enjoy the sides though. The cucumber and onion salad was good palate cleanser, and the smoked beans were well cooked with a lot of pork in them, I would actually say the pork to bean ratio was actually very close to 50/50. The corn muffins were a nice size come a pretty sweet, although I'm usually not a fan of corn kernels inside of my corn muffins. With a little whipped butter on top, they were solid. I was a little disappointed they were out of the banana pudding pie but the coconut custard pie was a fine replacement. I really wanted to love this place, but my experience was just average. I would still say the best barbecue joints in Virginia are around Richmond and not Tidewater. read more

Wow, Scoot's - I'm a fan! This place is supposedly known for their pit-cooked BBQ, but they also offer an extensive menu, including grilled burgers, brisket, crab cakes, smoked turkey melts, fried shrimp/oysters, wings, salads, and soups. The hubs and I saw this as a drive-by sighting, and we took a u-turn to check them out! When we walked in, we were greeted so warmly! The friendly cashier told us how the ordering is done, whether we are ordering for a carry-out or dining in. There was a large wall that spanned across one wall, and let me tell you, it can get pretty overwhelming! Once you've decided, you just order up at the cashier, they'll give you a number (a cute table number on a stump of log), and you find a table of your choice to sit at. The servers will come out with your order once ready. We ended up choosing the Combo Platter, which came with Texas Style Brisket, Pulled Pork, and Pulled Chicken. Served with a side of your choice (we opted for the fried pickles) and a cornbread muffin. YUM! The brisket was literally fork-tender - no need for a knife at all! Loved the edges, and it was very flavorful! The pulled pork with some of the crispy edge bits was probably one of the best pulled pork we've had - it was very juicy and yummy! The pulled chicken was okay, but we wouldn't order it again. I didn't really care for the fried pickles, as the batter was a bit too thick and was a bit overfried. I'm interested in checking out their mac & cheese or their smoked beans next time. The cornbread muffin was a sweet treat, and I liked that it had whole kernels of corn within. The side of sweet whipped butter was a great spread! Their sauces are pretty tasty, too, and complement their meats very well. I personally am not really a fan of the Carolina vinegar style, but the version at Scoot's was great! I will definitely return! We were a party of two. We dined in and ate indoors. We had a Combo and the Texas Trio. The gentleman taking orders behind the counter and the two ladies delivering food did their jobs well, but I wouldn't have considered them welcoming nor friendly. The Combo consisted of sliced brisket, pull pork, pulled pork and cole slaw. The Texas Trio was sliced brisket, spare ribs, pulled pork and collard greens. All of the food had a sweet taste to without the addition of bbq sauce. The collard greens had a nice texture, but I didn't care for the sweet taste. The brisket was dry. The pulled pork and chicken had a smoky flavor but also had a sweet flavor. I did try the chipotle flavored bbq sauce. I thought it had a great flavor. I would eat here again. read more
