Absolutely LOVE this place! Spent a week in the area and ended up here 3 times! 2 out of the 3 visits, I went straight for the OBX Peel & Eat Shrimp, which were AWEsome. Girlfriend went for a little variety each visit - was happy with each meal. Great 'seafood shanty' atmosphere & great views! Another constant was top-notch service - servers were affable, efficient, & knew the ins & outs of the menu & specials. If I lived in the area, this would definitely be my 'home base' for good food & drinks. Highly recommended!

Servers are always friendly and attentive! I love when the bartenders make something fun after I give them a free pass to make whatever! Tom is the best! If you're from here, you know parking is not going to be ideal but you get over it! -1 star because I feel like the variety and quality of the food has decreased with slight price increase over the last few years. I understand raising prices, but the last few times we've been, menu items I have not been available and the food was semi-Bland unfortunately

Finding this place was such a catch! (Get it? ) I don't live in the area, but I don't think you cod do better than Hole in the Wall. Don't trout me and just go! I had the fried oysters, my partner had the grilled sea bass, and both were amazing! It's a lot of food with the sides, but the views over the water are fun--if you have a boat they also do boat-based takeaway--and everyone is socially distant at tables. Considering going somewhere else for lunch seems a bit fishy to me. This place is o-fish-ally a winter! I should dolphinitely scale back on the fish puns.

Incredible views incredible food great service. Don't miss this hole in the wall. The name says it all, but does not do it justice.

Great water spot (5) with OK food (3) makes this a solid 4 star review. Gets crowded easily as it's really the only place around.

A very casual place on the water on Gwynn's Island, this is a true "hole in the wall". The decor is homey with a typical watermen

Also, we booked the reservation for 7:30 PM and, even though they closed at 8 PM, they still graciously accepted my reservation and provided us with the most outstanding service. I ordered the low country skillet, which was like a seafood boil with sausage on top of cheesy grits with a side of green beans. It was delicious and hearty. I recommend ordering this dish, especially since our server deemed it as one of the restaurants signature dishes. I also had a glass of Malbec red wine, pair of quite nicely with my meal. One of the other guests ordered the corn dip, which had a side of pita chips to dip into. The corn dip was slightly thick and sweet, with a few slices of avocado sitting on top. Also delicious. Highly recommend this place if you are craving a New American cuisine with a southern twist.

Lots of elderly women in Mathews. Guys must be out fishing or hunting or moved on. She liked her Gazpacho and N'awlins salad. My martini was under $12 a pop which is nice break from the city. I would have liked more crust on my scallops and the soba accompaniment was over cooked and I couldn't eat much of it. A gluey mush. Overall was OK and would return but order something else.

My husband and I stopped for a late lunch, and were happy to find an updated menu of diner…read morefavorites with some creative additions. We shared a dinner portion of oysters plus a Chesapeake burger, both of which were perfectly prepared. The oysters were huge and succulent with a very light breading. They were accompanied by fries and Cole slaw, with cocktail and tartar sauce on the side. The burger was cooked medium rare as I requested, and was especially tasty since it was topped with lump crab meat, bacon, lettuce, and tomato. I got it with sweet potato fries, which were dusted with a touch of cinnamon and were a perfect side kick for the burger. We ended up taking home about half of each meal because we wanted to leave room for ice cream It just seems wrong to leave a well-preserved early 20th century diner with a soda fountain and counter seating without having some sort of ice cream! We were pretty full, so we shared a hot fudge sundae, which was definitely big enough for us both. It had vanilla ice cream, a generous portion of hot fudge, whipped cream, nuts, and two cherries (since we were sharing). We had a choice of wet nuts or peanuts, and I chose peanuts, as the salty flavor is a nice complement to the sweetness of the rest. Overall, we enjoyed this visit and hope to come back. I'd like to try the Caprese Burger and maybe have more oysters. They offer gluten free buns as an option, which is a helpful touch as well. Whether you live in Matthews or are just traveling through, it's worth a stop.
