Fun place to visit away off the beaten path in Urbana, Va. We ordered pancakes, omelette, w/2 x grits, home fries, bacon and a biscuit. Everything first round was great. The server was cordial and interactive--the seating area filled quickly and with friends and families -- we were from out of town, but it seemed folks all knew each other. The Omelette, pancake and grits were great--grits were creamy and thick. We ordered another cut of grits and they were runny and had too much salt. Then, ordered a biscuit, and the jelly orange marmalade--it did not taste right--.so my rating dropped from a 5 to 3 for inconsistency. read more

We stopped in when visiting the area for a quick lunch. Our server was excellent and very friendly. The menu is large and our food was good. A couple of us got salads with blue cheese dressing and the dressing was soured which was terrible but thankfully no one got sick. read more

It's pretty good. Small local restaurant with good food. I haven't had anything absolutely delicious but it's good. I would recommend to give it a try. I like to support local. I haven't been in a while, I need to go back soon and see if they have anything new. read more

Great little kind of out of the way cafe for a laid back breakfast or lunch! Had lunch here with a good friend, we ordered something not quite on the menu, and the folks gladly adjusted to our requests! I was very, VERY disappointed by the portion size of each order. Attached picture is 3 orders plus 2 sides per order. We've plated them nicely in this picture but I was shocked when I first opened my order. Some friends and I away for a quick weekend at Bethpage Campground and decided to go out for a quick breakfast. Situated about a mile down the road to try this little place with a home town feel. Ms. Didi and the staff were friendly and have created a little gem of a place. Breakfast was reasonably priced for the area and was excellent. The French toast was incredible, succulent with a little crisp on the outside. Small menu but everything we ordered was delicious and felt home made. The cream chip beef was excellent although they are known for their sausage gravy. (Next time cause we will be back!). The homemade biscuits tasted as good as they looked. Only drawback that we could see was that it was a small place, but the atmosphere, service, and food quality were top notch. Be sure to stop by this gem if you're in the area..worth the stop. Your website says open Sunday and we drive 30 minutes to celebrate a 60th birthday to have brunch with our family and got there and it was closed. we called the day before and were told it would be open. please update your website or get your staff on the same page. very disappointed!! read more

Service wasn't great, food was overpriced and took over 30 minutes for some eggs! We had a large party but several tables arrived after us and received their food before us. Poached eggs were hard boiled; sausage gravy wasn't good; refills for our drinks were nonexistent (we got up and walked to the drink station so they would get the hint); no silverware available (we had to wait while they wrapped some for us while our food was getting cold); $50 for 3 people for breakfast is nuts! I would not recommend this place and probably wouldn't have eaten the food if it was free. Don't waste your time or money. read more

Had a great breakfast here w/ friends. They were busy but the server took good care of us. Others had eggs benedict and said they like them. I had the fried oyster breakfast special. What's not to like about that ! Eggs over easy, a biscuit & hash browns. Bottom less coffee to boot. Be sure to check their opening days & times as they are rather odd. A+ vibes at Big Oak! For breakfast on Saturday, we started off with the French toast, which was the best I've ever had. It was the perfect mix of sweet and hearty. Then we got the breakfast bowl, and soft shell Benedict. DeeDee will definitely never make you a meal that will have you leaving hungry! For lunch on Sunday, we got the cheesesteak sub and the Cuban sandwich, which again was the best I've ever had. I'm still dreaming about the ham on that Cuban! The decor in the restaurant makes me feel at home, and the whole staff is very friendly and cheery. All of the food was delicious, and service was very quick and attentive. I was visiting Middlesex and stopped in with my Grandparents for dinner. The restaurant is cute. I will give them that. Also our waitress was nice enough. That is why I gave it 2 stars versus one. The food was awful (and overpriced) I ordered a shrimp and scallop pasta for $18. It was tasteless and I didn't even end up eating more than a piece of shrimp out of it and a few forkfuls of pasta. My Grandmother ordered a prime rib and it was way undercooked. Really disappointed. I wouldn't have eaten my meal if it were free..it was that bad. read more

not sure where to start... walked in and nobody said a word to us so we just sat down, after 5-10 mins the server came over and gave us menus (she never smiled), minutes later took our drink order, minutes later took our food order. food took 30 mins or so and we watched as others who sat after us got served much faster. food was meh at best, poached eggs were hard boiled, sausage gravy had little to no flavor and not enough on the bowl as it was dry, stated came with home fries but it didn't, had a cheap hash brown under the gravy and eggs. everyone in the party was disappointed and $50 bill for 3 people for breakfast is highway robbery. there were 9 in our party but that night we went to the Mexican restaurant in town and the service was amazing, spent less money, left very satisfied and was. put the door in 45 mins. I would never recommend this place to a soul. save your money and go to hardy's ! Will NEVER go back! . I did tip accordingly but it wasn't deserved at all! read more

Big Oak is a great little stop on Route 602. This wonderful remodel of an old country store is a fun and clean little place to grab a hearty breakfast, light lunch, or home-cooked style dinner. The menu may appear limited, but once you try to choose, you realize you have many options, choices of sides, and a blackboard of specials. Breakfast quesadilla with side of bacon is my favorite. Biscuits and gravy is spouse's favorite. Coffee could be a bit more flavorful -- I love the taste of different brews at some of these "out of the way" places, but this coffee is average. For lunches, I have enjoyed delicious salads and a tasty Oyster Po'boy. Service is accommodating and friendly. Best of all, they serve beer, wine, and even mimosas for breakfast. read more

Wow what a gem this place is. Cant judge a book by its cover. Old house on side of country road converted to a small 8 table restaurant. Family run, super clean and delicious food. We were camping in Urbana and looking for a small local place and we struck golf with this one. Lunch shrimp basket with 5 giant fried shrimp was amazing. We also had steak and cheese special. Everything was outstanding and so reasonably priced. And our server Jenna was very sweet attentive and helpful. If you are in the area don't pass this one up. read more

Food was great, prices reasonable, friendly folks who run the place. The burger was done just right and I like how there is BBQ and cole slaw on top of it. It is hard to get really good fries that aren't under done if you know what I mean. Their fries were just right and just a little crunchy. The menu was not too complicated-a huge plus in my book. The Big Oak Cafe was just what my wife and I were looking for on our drive home. Great small family business with good food. Very simple, classic breakfast menu. My wife got the breakfast biscuit and I got the breakfast quesadilla. The biscuit was homemade and delicious. Both of our meals included breakfast sausage that, I assume, was homemade. I give two stars for the cute place and the nice server. Breakfast WAS BAD. I had chipped beef gravy over two very spongy pieces of toast. The chipped beef used was the salty stuff from a jar. The consistency was of very thick almost dried paste. Sure didn't ladle it on. My husband had two eggs, a sausage patty that was stiff and not tasty. No toast with the eggs. Isn't that a given? His homegrown which the waitress said would be fried in a pan with onions. We knew we were in trouble when we heard the deep fryer bubbling. Deep fried home fries no onion. We had considered returning for lunch as the special was crabcake sandwich. We weren't about to risk it and be disappointed again. If you can't cook, Don't open a restaurant. read more

This is a cute place to stop just outside of Urbanna. The service was ok, but very friendly. The staff was not too knowledgable of the menu. Breakfast specials looked good, but we had lunch, which was a little nicer than diner food. Not too many choices in the NN, so nice to have another breakfast option. Just opened, we stopped by early, (8:30) for breakfast, the place is clean and new, cost is about right, they need to expand the menu a bit, no tea for the wife. Breakfast meats were not warm, but the French toast was hot and good, wife's pancakes were OK, but not great. I will give lunch a try next week. read more

Cute little restaurant new to Urbana area. A friend and I had lunch in there today. Staff very friendly and pleasant.Food was good. I had a daily special (Burger with BarBQ and slaw) and friend had a ham and cheese pannini. Both were very good. They are open for Breakfast and Lunch (except Wednesday) and serve dinner on Mondays and Fridays. Will stop again! read more
