I'm afraid Southwind has lost its appeal. I used to love this place, but something has changed. The service is so slow and inattentive!!! They don't seem able to handle their business with time and attention to everyone. It's hard to watch our waiter serve folks who came in after we did, then serve newcomers before we got our meal! We only ordered a small pizza and wings. The lettuce salads were good because I love their dressing, but what happened to the cukes, red onions, etc. - 2 cheery tomatoes ? , I guess it was a bad night and we need to show up earlier? This is the second time we've had extremely poor service here. The Salmon has always been a favorite - it's now dry...overcooked. And the pizza, although delicious wasn't the the small crusty 4 piece I'm used to. I received 8 very thin crusted pieces.. I'm just so disappointed! read more

We ordered two draft beers and decided on a pizza we wanted to try. The pizza was one of the very best I have had here in Virginia, always on the lookout for great pizza being from the very Italian Rochester area of upstate New York. Great place! This sleepy little town fills UP this place for lunch! The service, the food....always right on! The food is great (OMG, try the chicken salad!!!), and the wait staff is always helpful, attentive, and prompt, even when the restaurant is completely full! The chef is willing to make some subs when requested, but try to avoid asking....trust them, the food is great as-is! The deco is eclectic, with a racing skull hanging from the ceiling in back room. The restaurants in Deltaville were full at 8pm on a Friday night in early October which was unexpected, so our group of five friends drove to Mathews to get pizza. We called and ordered ahead, a Rigby Island pizza and a New Pointe pizza. When we arrived they were getting ready to close but the staff said we could sit on the porch to eat which was super nice of them. They served us drinks and dessert as if we had ordered for dine in. We were so happy to have such friendly and welcoming service since it was so late. Our waiter Michael was wonderful and we will certainly be back. That buttermilk parmesan dressing they have is worth the drive. read more

Cute little restaurant in the middle of the cute town center of Mathews. Not a huge menu, which I love because normally it means the food is fresh. This was definitely the case for Southwinds! Family friendly atmosphere and very laid back. While we weren't in the mood for pizzas, the menu changed our minds. The Caribbean Jerk Chicken pizza hit the spot! Went here on a Friday evening specifically for the gluten free pizza. They were out. Of all gluten free crust. Then ordered the Fillet mignon. A few minutes later the waitress comes out and informs me they're out. Again... on a Friday evening. It's one of their specials yet they've already run out. I settle on the shrimp and grits, and asked if I could still get the sides included with the fillet, since they were out of so many choices. The waitress came back out to inform me, yes, but for an extra $7. Would I still like the sides? I said ok, no I will not be paying that but I will be leaving a yelp review. 2 minutes later she informs me the owner said I can have the sides for free. When our meals came out, we had to ask for the salads which should have come out beforehand. The owner did bring the sides out personally, and checked on us again later, so he attempted to remediate the situation somewhat. The shrimp and sauce on the shrimp and the salad dressings were good. My husband got the trout and it had zero flavor, zilch. The grits were flavorless, and the mashed potatoes were lumpy. The ratatouille was unevenly chopped, so the squash was unevenly cooked. We had to go in and ask for the check when we were done (we were sitting outside), and here's the kicker: my husband was vomiting 8 hours later with food poisoning (mind you he had not eaten out anywhere but here in the past 72 hours). It's a very small town. Maybe this is why they can get away with overpriced food and running out of various specials and still make a profit. Would not recommend and will not be returning. read more

we were in the area and needed a lunch break. gave the Southwind Cafe a try. we had our little pupper with us and they have outdoor seating in the shade. Morgan quickly came out to greet us and take our order. our dog got a bowl of water. we decided to try the pizzas. we did the big island and the tangier island. they were delicious. they are cut into 4 slices but we only could finish 3 each. as long as we were taking home the other slices we had to add some cake for later. so we took home a slice of lemon blueberry and a slice of carrot cake. they were amazing. its good to know I have a go to place for food when I am in the area. you have to stop in here. friendly service, small town kindness and great food. read more

Satisfying to the point that I'd give Southwind Pizza a strong 4 stars if not for the subpar service. I get it -- I've worked in the service industry before, it's hard to be smiley and cheery all the time. Standoffish service? It happens. But it's also hard to ignore the fact that we were a group of POC in a town that proudly flew Confederate battle flags on their streets. I'm not trying to assert anything or the other, but yeah, it was a thought in my mind. My friend told me about this place and told me I had to try their pizza. I had the Fisherman's Island pizza. They were currently out of scallops but they offered to make it with extra shrimp and crab so I went for it. Great choice. The pizza crust was delicious and the toppings were perfect. I cannot wait to go back and try it with scallops or try the lobster roll. Melody was our server and she was amazing. Super friendly and laughed at my jokes. Haha. The restaurant was very clean and they were getting ready to do a renovation. I'll have to wait to go back but I will. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a great little place to grab a bite. read more

Southwind Cafe seems like such a cute local place! They have a limited seating on the patio, and when you step inside, it is packed with the locals as well as a cute little vibe to it! The atmosphere was quite inviting, and the chef himself, noticed us walking in, and asked if we wanted to just sit up at the bar (as it was available right away), or wait a few minutes for a table to open up. We opted for the bar, as we wanted to order their famous pizzas and hit the road to drive back. I'm so glad we did, as Chris, the bartender, was very attentive and just plain AWESOME! He was so incredibly sweet and gave us some of the events that are going on in town as well as copies of some 'Rivah' magazines that include local events and such. We were also seated next to another local named Steve, and he was pretty awesome, too, offering some of the local attractions that we could check out the next time we were in town. My husband ordered their homebrewed sweet tea (again, I'm thinking we're just not a fan of Mathew's filtration system, as this also had an off taste to it); we also ordered the Rigby signature pizza to go, a small size. The pizza itself has thick crust, and had a generous amount of cheese, basil, and tomatoes. I was surprised, as Chris stated that Southwind was ranked as #2 for the best pizza in VA (others all in Virginia Beach) - the pizza itself was okay, and I appreciated the fresh ingredients as the toppings. I would love to come back and try out their other menu items, as I've heard that the chef gets pretty inventive. +ask for Chris, the awesome bartender! :D read more

We visited the cute little town of Mathews while on a beautiful motorcycle ride through the Virginia countryside. Based on Yelp reviews and recommendations from friends who knew the area, we decided on Southwind Cafe as our lunch destination. We'd been warned that it gets crowded, but we arrived between the lunch and dinner crowds so we got a table right away (there was still a healthy number of people enjoying leisurely meals). What a nice place! The decor was clean, bright, colorful, and artsy (locally made art & crafts, I think). It looked like just about every piece on display was for sale. The single bathroom was tidy and had good lotion if you like that kind of thing. There was a refrigerated display case that held delicious looking desserts sold by the slice (apple, lemon, pumpkin, and key lime pies; carrot and almond cakes)...unfortunately, we didn't try any. There was nice bar with seating that had a good selection of wine and beers on tap. Service was friendly and timely. We never felt rushed or in need of anything. They had a good variety of sandwiches, salads, and pizzas to keep most folks happy. Right off the bat, their Black bean-Sweet potato Quesadilla off their regional/seasonal menu jumped out at me, but it was really popular and had already sold out! Disappointing. Instead, we ordered two pizzas (Tangier Island and Parrot Island, I think) . I've posted a pic of how those came out, and they tasted as good as they looked. The crust was crispy and chewy, and had fresh toppings that packed a lot of flavor. They both had good topping to crust ratios. We cleaned our plates. We will definitely make Southwind Cafe a regular stop when we're riding out that way. If Mathews is not a usual destination for you, FYI...the small pedestrian area around the cafe has other restaurants, coffee shops, galleries, and boutique/antique/other stores that make for a good day trip. PS I see up above where it says Southwind Cafe is not wheelchair accessible. There were stairs leading up into the front of the cafe, but there was a gentleman in a wheelchair dining inside when we came in, so perhaps there's a wheelchair accessible ramp somewhere on the premises? read more

On a lovely spring eve in April, I happened upon the charming Southwind Cafe in Matthews, VA. Having formerly met the chef/owner and spoken with him at length about his fabulous Southwind pizza pies, I was indeed anticipating a mouthwatering dining experience. The waitress was kind enough to seat me and my faithful pooch, Conniption, on the front porch in the fading sunlight. I ordered the Gwynn's Island Specialty Pie for myself and a grilled chicken breast for Nip. Fifteen minutes later, my pie was delivered. I had asked for a bowl of water for the dog, and it was promptly delivered along with his chicken breast, thoughtfully diced into dog-sized bites. The pizza was good, although I detected way more mozzarella than goulda cheese. I ate half and saved the rest for a late night snack. Then I sat for quite awhile, feeling forgotten, secretly longing for a box and a steaming hot cup of coffee. I had been contemplating dessert but was beginning to get tired of waiting. No one bothered to check to see if my food was prepared to my satisfaction. As with this chef/owner's other restaurant in Gloucester, the quality of the food was fine, but the service sadly lacking. I was visiting a friend in a neighboring town and we stopped by for brunch. Not only is the atmosphere warm and inviting, and the service excellent but the food is absolutely amazing! We split the gruyere risotto balls as an appetizer and they were delicious. Then, we both landed on the shrimp Charleston as our entrees. This is a shrimp and grits dish that changed my idea of what shrimp and grits should be. It was creamy and perfectly seasoned with just the right shrimp-to-grits ratio. I will absolutely be back for more!! It would be worth the drive from the far west side of Richmond JUST to experience that masterpiece again, although I would love to explore the quaint little town it's in as well. While in Mathews for a weekend getaway, my husband and I stopped by Southwind and ordered to-go at the bar (We ordered the Parrot Island pizza and a side of chicken strips). The wait was long, but we ordered some drinks and played with the neat mind puzzles on the bar, so we didn't mind. We expected a lot more from the food - the pizza was not good at all. The sauce was too sour and crust too tough. Even worse, however, were the chicken strips. They were disgusting. Additionally, we ordered the strips with ketchup and honey mustard and we were told they had neither (and we were also told they were out of "every other sauce we could imagine") and so one of the waitresses without asking threw a single chic-fil-a sauce (leftover from her lunch) into the to-go box with our chicken (which I found kind of gross). The food isn't good, but the atmosphere at the bar was very fun and there isn't much to do in the area, so I can easily see the appeal - just don't expect as much as the previous reviews seemingly promise. read more

This is one of my favorite places to eat when I'm down at the river. The pizza always hits the spot and never has disappointed--I always get the Paradise Island. Their food is always fresh, especially seafood specials. The owner is a great guy and truly seems to care about his customers and their experience.
