One of the best seafood restaurants in the northern neck area. It's hard to find restaurants open in the winter. We are so glad this restaurant is open all year long. We have tried various things such as seafood chowder, rolls, broccoli soup with crab, flounder stuffed with crab, tuna with mango & pepper salsa and oyster Rockefeller. Absolutely worth it. My favorites were oyster Rockefeller and tuna steak. Mango salsa goes so well with the tuna steak. Service has always been phenomenal. We are always greeted with a smile and lots of positives vibes. Cozy, friendly seafood spot in the Northern Neck. Bacon wrapped shrimp appetizer was a delicious starter for a really well executed meal. Our server was both friendly and attentive throughout with great suggestions (pointed out scratch made dressings) and offered great options. Entrees were exceptional. The grouper imperial was exceptionally fresh with great sides and the shrimp scampi was very good as well. Special bar drink (blueberry margarita with pineapple) was very nice as well. Long story short: I loved everything about this place!!! Detailed version: We visited this restaurant for the first time Wednesday night for my birthday dinner. The place was pretty busy but we were still able to be seated right away! The tables were a little tight together but the place gave off such an "old time home" feel that I was ok with that. We ordered some drinks, and a bacon wrapped shrimp appetizer. The drinks were good and they brought out the most amazing complementary bread! It was soft and sweet and just melted in your mouth....so of course we finished that and asked for a second! The bacon wrapped shrimp was really good, five good sized shrimp with crispy bacon and a sweet dipping sauce. For my meal I ordered the shrimp scampi. By that time I was close to filled up on bread and the appetizer that I had to get a box to go, but the bites that I did take there were really good. The shrimp was the same decent sized ones that came with the appetizer and had a garlic cheese over top. I could have gone with a little more butter sauce (just because I LOVE butter) but it with still pretty great as is. The waitress found out it was my birthday over the course of the night and multiple times wished me happy birthday. On the way out she did it again and other guests in the restaurant started to sing. You can tell this is a really great little town, filled with kind hearted people, because we felt at home and left with a huge smile on our faces! Sandpiper is easily the best restaurant in White Stone. I took my husband and some friends there for dinner recently. The food was fresh and delicious and the cocktails were amazing. Our server, Noke, was absolutely incredible, not only was she friendly, warm and welcoming but she could almost read our minds and attended to our needs without us hardly needing to request. As a treat for a visiting relative from Texas, we went to the Sandpiper Restaurant on March 31, 2025, specifically for a crabcake dinner. Unfortunately, we were served claw meat instead of lump crab meat. Claw meat, which is the brown meat from the claws, has a stronger flavor profile and is typically used in dips, soups, or dishes with heavy sauces. This is a far cry from the white lump crab meat that one would expect to find in a crabcake, especially here in crab country. The experience was very disappointing, and I regret not refusing the dinner. When I politely asked to speak with the owner, she was unavailable. The same was true for a follow-up phone call at a less busy time. After speaking to other local residents, I learned of similar experiences with Sandpiper's crabcakes. It appears that lump crab meat may have been used at one time, but certainly not now. Instead, customers receive crab meat that is not typically used for crabcakes at reputable restaurants that charge similar prices read more

Been coming here for years and it has had it's up and down times , mostly good and positive things to say food is good and drinks vary in specials , some dishes are pricy and get you looking , yes service can be slow at times buts a hard town to get help so they get what they can and when it's fills up staff do what they can , be helpful if someone just focus on drink refills walking with a pitcher of water refilling glasses goes along way and focus on one thing people notice when waiting , and empty cup. Definitely a family run business that is warm and comfortable only like a long term beloved place can feel. We came early on a week day and the place was already pretty full. This place is popular! I had a rum punch drink that was great as I expected. The food was definitely more in the "comfort food" category than fine dining. If you want quality food, that tastes good, that you are well familiar with - this is the spot for you. I had the crab cake and fried shrimp. Would have liked it grilled, but both were very tasty. Also came with a twice cooked potato. I guess I'm going thru a health kick! Usually I don't care but somehow I was wanting some veggies and nothing else inspires me. Regardless - that was my bad as the starch was very good. Definitely try to go here. Just be patient if there's more people than seats. read more

Best of Virginia seafood??? They have these awards as you walk in so I was eager to have some great seafood. Maybe the fried seafood is what is good and not the rest?? The kabob was really bad. Overcooked everything and the potato had an unmelted piece of Kraft sandwich cheese on top. Scallops were tiny and hard to chew, shrimp dry, steak looked like little scraps of meat and overcooked. My husband had scallops and crabcake and his were all bad too. It took an hour to get our meal. Maybe it was left a long time under a heat lamp and waitress forgot? The mojito with fresh mint was lovely. All I can think to explain the good reviews is that they ate the fried food which is easier to cook. I don't mind paying a-lot for dinner when it is good but this was not. :( read more

We had visited this area and enjoyed the restaurant very much two years ago. This was that experience and then some. Start with Maxine our server. She has 46 years with this family owned business and she was absolutely the best. Her manner, kindness and care (all service points) in this role are unparalleled!! We also loved our meals. We went traditional fried with a wonderful order of beer battered shrimp for my wife and a boat of fried oysters for me. We do not eat a lot of fried but I am so glad we saved up for this dinner--exceptional! I was so impressed that I asked Maxine to introduce me to the kitchen staff which she did. These very tenured employees were beaming as I heaped praise on them. This is a restaurant with a long history that is obviously lived by locals. As a long time weekly customer I'm irritated that the owner is charging 3.5 percent more for non cash customers and blaming it on the bank. Last week however was the topper. Our 2 person check of $120 +- included a $2 surcharge for a piece of bread. What restaurant with high priced entrees does this? I don't want to be negative buttttt. Arrived with a large group and was seated immediately. It was about 10 minutes before we received water. Another 20 minutes before an order was taken. Meanwhile we watched others arrive, orders get started and were already provided with bread and salads. We didn't even realize bread was included until we saw other tables getting bread and had to ask for it. Food is expensive for what you get and especially being in such a small town. $36 for two crab cakes(tasted frozen) and overcooked broccoli. Crab Cakes had bits and pieces of crab shell in it and I spent half the time picking hard pieces out of my mouth. Same with the crab dip. My twice baked potato came with NOTHING on it except a slice of kraft singles(Yes the same type you place on your kid's sandwiches) that wouldn't even melt. Also waited for another 25-30 minutes after we were done with food before bills were presented. I can't honestly recommend this restaurant to anyone. - For what you get portion and taste wise it's way overpriced. Figured the DMV area would provide better crab but I was wrong. - Service leaves much to be desired and there doesn't seem to be a front of the house person making sure tables are being taken care of. It seems to be every waiter for themselves. Can't remember the last time I ate somewhere and the manager or someone didn't at least come by and ask how everything was. - A slice of kraft cheese on a baked potato is unforgivable read more

The food and service here are incredible. The calamari is super tender with crisp breading and delicious dipping sauce. The crab cakes are 95% blue crab meat. The rainbow trout is lemony with crisp skin. Even the martini was good, as were the key lime pie and the (still warm) pineapple upside down cake. The staff are so so friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious. They don't take reservations and for some reason, our food took forever to arrive. We waited through other diners ordering, eating and leaving before we were the last in our space to be served. An explanation plus apology would have gone a long way toward keeping us happy. Have been to Sandpiper a couple times now. This may be my fav restaurant in the Kilmarnock Irvington White Stone area. First thing you notice is this is a busy place! There is a well-stocked bar upfront usually full of happy locals. Dining rooms are to the back. There are a couple chalkboards with the specials of the day in addition to the printed menus. But, lets talk food. I am not sure what you call this, a steakhouse or seafood place. So far I have ordered all seafood, myself. Soft crabs, crab cakes, calamar, and fish of the day have been superbly cooked. Wife has been the steak person (surf 'n turf lobster and filet has been her fav,) Based on food, this is a 5 star. The only negative is its a bit pricy. Good thing otherwise we would be there at least 4 or 5 times a week. If there was a 1/2 star available, I'd say a solid 4&1/2. Great place! read more

My husband and I were visiting the town and we stopped by this restaurant 20 minutes before their opening time which is 4pm, and the staff let us inside and we were seated. We were the first guests inside but the service by Felicia and the manager lady was an outstanding service. They both were lovely and the food was delicious. Had an amazing dinner last night at the Sandpiper. It had been years since we last visited this establishment and heard it was under new management. A close friend had also been raving that we needed to go and check it out. Our waitress ended up being an old family friend (and has worked there for years), who made us feel like family! We were treated to an onion ring appetizer for a birthday treat (along with a piece of delicious bread pudding as well!). All our dishes were served hot and tasted amazing. If you are looking for quality seafood, inventive dishes and fresh ingredients, look no further. I love coming here with my parents when I am in town. The atmosphere is warm and cozy, and the people here are so nice. My favorite dish here is the beer battered fried shrimp, but I don't really eat fried food. This is the one place that I will make an exception.. tonight however I tried the seafood etoufee special, which was delicious and had the perfect spice. The salads here are so fresh and they make the dressings in house. I get the balsamic vinaigrette and my parents love the Parmesan peppercorn. Their veggie side dishes are always fresh and delicious too. The one down side to this place is the cost. It's a bit high for being out in the country, but I will say I am always full after my meal. I wish I could afford to eat here more often. read more

*Fantastic* seafood in a casual setting. Like super casual beachy meaning...the chairs, tables and furnishings are very basic, like bingo hall basic, but we were there for the seafood so we didn't really care. Its clear they spend their money where it matters- on excellent seafood in large portions. Among us we got the shrimp stuffed with crab, the fried oysters, the crab cakes, the fried haddock, and the chicken fingers for kids. Portions were enormous. If you're wondering if you should share an entree, the answer is most likely yes. Drinks were also very well-poured and delicious. The only item that fell short were the oysters - they had that odd and bitter taste that oysters sometimes have. Our awesome waitress (whose name I have forgotten) was quick to accomodate the toddlers at the table with regular juice and chocolate milk requests. It is a little pricey, but definitely worth all five stars. read more
