Just moving in to Williamsburg from Michigan after years of visiting. We have passed Aberdeen Barn dozens of times but never stopped because it has always been busy. It is early February, the hordes of tourists are gone and I stopped there to check it out. One word: Wow! Upon sitting down, I was serviced by two waiters and presented with a plate of sharp cheddar spread and crackers and a menu. Reminds me of the Angus Barn in Raleigh, but not as large. The menu is extensive. On the table was a special offer for extended Restaurant Week that could not be overlooked. Surf & Turf for a great price. My choice was a no-brainer. The first course was a delicious corn and shrimp chowder. It had a bite that was perfect for the sub freezing weather outside. It was accompanied by a basket of hot bread. The house salad was generous and came with a choice of dressings offered at table side. The main course was medium rare prime rib was outstanding: juicy, tender and generous. It came with a baked potato and horse radish. Along side the slice of beef were three nice sized lobster claws. This is a combination that cannot be beat. All for $49. The meal was accompanied by a glass of California Cabernet from their extensive wine list. Needless to say, I had no room for dessert. The review would not be complete without a shout out for my waiter, Winston, an older gentleman from Jamaica whose attentive service was with a big smile. He was everything that I consider to be best-in-class service. We will mark this restaurant as a favorite for our new home in Williamsburg. read more

If you are in Williamsburg, VA, you have to go to Aberdeen Barn for a meal. We were very fortunate to have acquired a coupon for Dinner for Two at $56.99. The server told us (Table of 5) we only need one coupon. Everyone got the 3 course meal for $28.50! Started out with Wisconsin cheese and crackers. The server brought out ciabatta rolls. We all had dinner salads with a choice of dressing. (House-made bleu cheese was amazing). Then we had a choice of Prime Rib of beef, grilled Top Sirloin or Mahi Mahi w/ shrimp. For the final course, we had a small dessert of brownie with ice cream and whip. Perfect end and just enough. While visiting Williamsburg for a friends birthday, we chose Aberdeen barn for her birthday dinner. The hospitality was great! They allowed us to move our reservation back and Rob was a great server. We enjoyed the rolls and butter. They were crunchy on the outside yet soft on the inside. As an appetizer we ordered the bacon wrapped shrimp. I was different. If you go to this restaurant I guess you should stick with what they are best known for (meat). My sister and I ordered the shrimp and scallops. The shrimp were not fresh and they were overcooked so it made the texture rubbery. Our waiter Michael tried his best to make things right by having them cook us more shrimp but this batch came back worst than the first. We made reservations for 430pm and we were seated promptly at that time. The atmosphere has a barny look with tables and chairs with arms. The booths are low but comfortable. The female bathroom has been remodeled with three smaller stalls. We ordered our food which were lamb chops cooked medium and barn fries. The delmonico steak cooked medium well. The salad was fresh and cold. The bread was hot and melted the butter in no time. When I cut into my lamb chops, it was cooked perfectly. They were seasoned and just needed a tad bit more flavor. This spot may have been here since I went to college in town in the last millennium. In all that time, I haven't ever been here. Finally I had a chance and can't believe I've waited this long! My sons wanted steaks so here we were. It is an old school Williamsburg spot and boy was I happy to start a new tradition. It is formal, dark, and stuffy which was just the way I wanted it. Most of the wait staff have been here a long time and know their jobs. I felt like I was in a new income bracket just being waited on. We started off with crackers and cheese which was like a Christmas cheese log. It tasted great. I got it because we thought our teenagers would like it and they did. Also got the bruschetta for the adults, but unfortunately they enjoyed it too! Everyone enjoyed their steaks, but I went with a seafood platter that was exactly what I wanted and tasted as good as I hoped. It came with shrimp, scallops and some fish I forgot (sorry). I went with mashed potatoes and wasn't disappointed. I can't wait to go back to Williamsburg so I can try to convince the family to return. read more

My sister and I had a 6:45 dinner reservation on April 17. We were seated right away and our orders ( lamb chops and pork chop) were presented to us very quickly. This attention was important as a large 2-table group was seated right after we were. This resulted in a lot of noise and a crowded situation. Plate wasn't hot, the au jus wasn't hot and the Prime rib certainly wasn't hot. Having said that, our excellent waiter made it right bringing out another serving. But the damage was done. Makes you wonder how a steakhouse serves cold steak. I know prime rib is cooked for hours before the restaurant opens, but not heating it on the grill prior to service and on a cold plate makes me scratch my head. I didn't get a photo but the steak was the highlight of the dinner. It was perfectly cooked and super flavorful. The fish was a little over done but the scallops were amazing. It's a little dark inside but it's a nice barny feel. The waiter was amazing. He had great suggestions and was quick to get anything we needed. It had been many years since I had been to this particular Aberdeen Barn. I've been here a couple of times and to the Charlottesville location a couple of times, but hadn't been to either in about 10 years. So, when I knew I would be in the area for business recently I made reservations here for a group of 5 for dinner. What I recalled about Aberdeen Barn from my past visits was the it was dark, cozy, and had "old style" steakhouse type furniture, with barrel chairs. I also recalled the crock of cheese and pretzel sticks and the visible dry-age locker when you walk in. Upon entering this time, I was so taken aback from how bright it was that I completely missed if the dry-age meat locker was visible. The furniture and everything else was exactly the same as I remember, but they REALLY need to reduce the lighting in there... This is not the place you make bright, especially with the older style furniture that they have. Aside from the décor and venue not being what I remembered and expected, the rest of the visit and dinner was excellent! Harris was our server and he was spot-on what I recall about the service there, which was very friendly, "down home southern" style accommodating, and helpful. He did a great job taking care of our group, keeping us informed on our food and telling us about preparation and everything as we went. The food was great! And for the prices, it's a nice deal! We started with their bacon wrapped shrimp and scallops and both were really good! Definitely nice, large shrimp and scallops and great, fresh flavors! Next up were the salads that came with the entrées and those were decent. I like that they bring a few dressings and pour them for you tableside. Entrées were next and everyone enjoyed what they ordered. The steaks were cooked just right and were flavorful. I like a nice, char-grilled steak with simple salt & pepper and that's what it tasted like. Sides were nice too. Save room for dessert, they have a decent selection of desserts to choose from. Those were definitely enjoyed as well. I'd return, but it might be a long time until I do as I'd prefer the ambiance of what it used to be more than what they've turned it into. "Don't modernize something that doesn't need it!" In fact, if it weren't the the great service provided by our server and the food being so nicely done - I'd give this review 3 stars instead of 4, simply because of the increased lighting. read more

We ate here on the evening of August 28th. We have eaten here before and were pleased with everything but this night some things were a bit off. The service seemed inattentive and unconcerned with our experience. My wife ordered the filet princess cut which was cooked nicely but the waitress nearly refused to bring her any sauce stating that she did not need it. I had the prime rib which was good however there was far too much AuJus on the plate making cutting the meat challenging to avoid a splash zone. There was also a very large chunk of fat still attached to the meat. My wife ordered a drink from the bar which came but was not what she ordered and was more like a punch than a mixed drink making it undrinkable and the waitress refused to remove it from the bill. The experience is perfect in every aspect. The cocktails are delicious, and I'm a bourbon snob! The entrees were amazing, we had the delmonico and the prime rib were great. My son got the chicken tenders and said they were better than Chick Fil A which for an 8 year old that only eats chicken tenders and macaroni and cheese is a huge compliment. The atmosphere was nostalgic like an old steakhouse with all the charm and memories from when I was a kid. Clean, very friendly staff (shoutout to Brian!) and food was amazing. The food was amazing! Heartbreaking decline in service -- we walked out after being ignored for 30+ minutes My husband and I have been loyal customers here for a long time. We've celebrated birthdays, family dinners, and special occasions at this restaurant -- it used to be one of our favorites. Tonight, that changed completely. We were seated promptly, but then we were forgotten. Our server walked by us several times without a word. After finally stopping to clear a nearby table, he said he'd be right back. We ordered our drinks -- and then sat there for over 30 minutes with nothing. Meanwhile, the table next to us (served by the same person) was checked on constantly. At one point, the server even took a dessert placard out of my daughter's hands to hand to that table. It wasn't busy enough to justify being completely ignored, and even if it were, a simple acknowledgment would have gone a long way. When my husband politely asked the manager if we could have a different server, the response was astonishing: "You didn't have a reservation, this is the best I can do." That is not how you treat any guest -- much less repeat customers who've spent countless evenings and celebrations here. If they couldn't serve us, a simple "we're at capacity right now" would have been fine. Instead, we were made to sit, wait, and feel invisible. It's disappointing beyond words to see a place we've supported for so long lose all sense of hospitality and care. We left feeling frustrated and completely unappreciated. This place is pure nostalgia! It's an old school steakhouse with amazing prices for the amount and quality of food. This was our kids first time to a steakhouse, and they loved every bite! The cheese and crackers were so good, the salads were crisp and fresh, and that peppercorn ranch was phenomenal. 3 of us ordered steaks, and they were prepared perfectly Medium, and seasoned perfectly. My daughter had macaroni and cheese, and it was also great! We shared the crème brûlée and mother load brownie for dessert, and they were a great ending to our meal. Our server was attentive, but not pushy. Overall, this is an excellent place to get a steak, and you feel like you're being transported back in time with the cozy old barn feel. Google showed this close to our hotel. This was an amazing experience. Both of our servers were top notch. They immediately served up cheese spread and crackers. Later on they gave us warm bread with our salads. My daughter had the rib dinner and declared it delicious. My husband said the prime rib cut like butter. I had the broiled seafood trio.
