It had way too much lettuce and tomato, and the bacon was almost burnt. For the price, I expected a much better balance of ingredients and overall quality. What really left a bad impression was when I came to pick up my order. The gentleman who handed me my food asked if I wanted to leave a tip for the person who prepared it. I found that extremely rude, especially since I had already been given the option to tip when I signed the receipt. It felt like I was being put on the spot. I was in the area because my daughter was getting her hair done. These appointments can take up to 8 hours but her appointment was 2.5 hours so instead of just waiting in the car I said let me go find a restaurant to eat and kill some time. So this place came up in my search so I decided to try it. The place looks abandoned from the outside but pretty decent inside. I ordered breakfast so it's really hard to judge. The French Toast I ordered was good.. They didn't mess that up. My wife who was with me ordered Steak and Eggs. I'm glad I didn't get ambitious. It didn't look good. Hit up Somerset Diner again. Have probably gone literally over a thousand times from when I was a child to now as an adult. Today, I opted for a light lunch, no dessert (but believe me I was tempted as I walked past the glass display case!). I got a mushroom and feta cheese omelette with french fries on the side and a glass of cranberry juice. The feta cheese crumbles were generous, there was generous portions of mushrooms and it was a deliciously hearty omelette. It really hit the spot! I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience at Somerset Diner was completely overshadowed by the manager's behavior. From the moment we sat down, the manager was loudly barking orders at the staff from her seat instead of assisting them. She repeatedly threatened employees, saying she would "make them" do things if they didn't move fast enough. The way she spoke to her team was not only disrespectful, but humiliating -- and she did this openly, in front of a dining room full of customers. At one point, she was yelling at employees near the front of the restaurant while guests were actively trying to eat. It was uncomfortable, distracting, and honestly ruined what should have been a pleasant meal. No customer wants to sit there listening to staff being berated. The servers themselves were kind and clearly trying their best under difficult circumstances. It was obvious morale was low, and that kind of management style creates a tense environment for both staff and guests. Food aside, the atmosphere was so uncomfortable that we couldn't even enjoy our meal. Leadership sets the tone for a restaurant, and unfortunately the tone here was hostile and unprofessional. I truly hope ownership addresses this, because no employee deserves to be spoken to that way -- and customers deserve to dine in a calm, respectful environment. read more

Somerset Diner used to be a rare treat when I was in college, but it was just okay. I would return, but wouldn't go out of my way to hit this diner. As is aptly described by the name, Somerset Diner is located in Somerset, NJ. I went on March 26th around 1 p.m., during what I would describe as the "lunch rush." Although the hostess was initially busy when we entered, we did not wait long to be seated. I paid about 48 dollars for my girlfriend and I, which is definitely not cheap -- but, as I'm from Manhattan, any meal for two under 60 unfortunately pleasantly surprises me. There is a 10% Rutgers student discount, but I forgot to take advantage of it. The servers here are pretty great, I've been to plenty of diners in my life and this is the only diner I've ever been to where they've (multiple times) offered to butter an English muffin in the kitchen without me even asking. The food here is pretty good. The chicken fingers are a league above those of the average diner's and the breakfast food is average to slightly above average. But the real stand out thing about this place is the ambiance. The decorations are so tacky that they circle around to being genuinely beautiful. The windows are huge and not even campy-beautiful, they are just beautiful. The fact that it's still open 24-hours is also an unfortunately unique selling point post-COVID. Unbelievably, my neighborhood in Manhattan does not have a single 24-hour diner. The food may not seem exceptional compared to the myriad of other choices during the day, but it is some of the best food you can get after a night-out. read more

These women have no idea how to solve problems, I asked for a Florentine Omelette and they just gave me spinach, I kindly asked the server to check why they didn't put the feta cheese in; so then this crazy women came to my table without a greeting to yell at me, telling me that they make a new omelet but that it is the same since they crumble the feta with the spinach, and despite this it still didn't have any cheese and didn't have any taste at all. When I went to the register, she asked me how it was and I told her the truth: no flavor and told her that they should just charge me for an spinach omelet. She then started yelling at me, saying she was the manager, and then she says "I'm just going to charge you for an spinach omelet, and, I never want to see you here again." Really now. I stopped by Somerset Diner for Lunch on a Monday afternoon around noon. The diner had a solid crowd but no wait time. Upon our arrival, my friends and I were immediately greeted and directed to a table. This diner was well-maintained and clean. I enjoyed the diner's ambiance and how it was decorated for Halloween as well. As soon as we sat at our table our server greeted us and provided us with suggestions on what to order. The menu had a huge selection of many different food options. I ended up ordering a country breakfast wrap with a side of french fries. The food came out within about 15 minutes and tasted delicious. Our server forgot to bring out our drinks, but other than that everything was great. My wrap had a lot of flavor and was cooked perfectly. My fries were very crispy and cooked well, I just think they could have used more seasoning. Overall, my experience at Somerset Diner was pleasant. The food and service were good and the prices were very reasonable, my meal only ended up being around 10 dollars. Somerset Diner also offers a student discount for Rutgers students, which is a plus. An actual good value, just know what to order. Somerset diner is a decent spot for brunch but has presented itself as a good spot for dinner. At first glance, it's got the usual diner fare with the stainless steel and neon facade. Inside there's plenty of seats and friendly staff. The place is super clean. Regarding food, this is more old-school than new American bar and grill. So understand that the seasoning, veggie selection and presentation won't be thrilling. However, the burgers are a low key good value. At 10oz with a range of $10.75 by itself or under $15 with premium toppings and fries, it's a lot of good meat for the money. Disco fries came out good with cheesy gravy goodness. I wish mixed greens or romaine would substitute the iceberg lettuce but overall it was a good chunk of change. Please note that the appetizers can be a mixed bag. Not everything was excellent but there are touches of good quality. The calamari was wide and thin, resembling frozen squid. While it still tasted fine, the tomato sauce it was paired with was fresh. Desserts are on the super sweet end. Price wise in 2023 they are still a good value with a banana split under $7 and a milkshake under $4. Again don't expect complex flavors like coriander, orange peel or notes from your favorite liquor but it's a great way to revisit refreshing guilty pleasures. In fact it's great for kids since the big portions means 2-3 kids can share the same slice of cake or cup of milkshake. Overall, while the score looks meager, I recommend at least going if you're looking for food in the New Brunswick area. Get the burgers with fries and shakes and you're golden! read more

Fortunately for them, I had nothing unique about my order, the pancake special with Taylor ham. (They use the correct terminology. Automatic star.) Now, the portions were quite undersized for the price, and I see people here note that the price isn't great, so we'll call that an automatic star deduction. Still, it's fresh made, very tasty, and I turned my pancakes into sandwiches (plus egg and meat) and made a solid meal out of it. Would I automatically stop here again? No, I want to preserve my wallet, but then again I'm usually not a diner guy. If someone said meet here, I would do it and tap into some more menu options (like that fried mixer. Back in the early 90s, I came here fairly regularly when I was a student at Rutgers. A week ago, when we went to pick my son up at Rutgers we decided to give it a try after all these years. We kept our order pretty simple, Wifey had a BLT on white toast, my son had a Buffalo chicken wrap, and I had a bowl of chicken noodle soup and a grilled ham and Swiss on rye. We also shared an order of Disco Fries with gravy on the side. My wife and son both liked their meals, bacon was well done on the BLT and my son thought the chicken was very good in his wrap. My meal was ok...the soup was ok, but seemed a bit watered down, just needed more seasoning. My sandwich was probably one slice of ham short of what I get at most places, but it was still pretty tasty. The disappointing part of the meal were the disco fries...the fries themselves were well done like we'd asked, but the cheese barely covered half the fries and the gravy was bland-to the pint of being flavorless-I don't m ow how you can do that, but I was pretty bummed. The cheese omelette said that it would come with home fries and toast, but for some reason it only came with the home fries.
