Outstanding Artistic Event Space In The SOMA Hood! SITREP My SF Yelp buddy Jessica T turned me on to the SOMArts facility this past month and I have to say I've been a big fan in the few times I've stopped in. It's rather an interesting adjustment for me as well since I've been familiar with this building-structure for almost 15 years - I would just barrel past (either walking or driving) when shooting down 8th Street to get down to Brannon or King Streets to hit some clubs, visit some friends' lofts, etc. But now I stop dead in my tracks to admire the new "use"! THE SETUP There is a multiplicity of spaces here: from a large central art exhibition area; to an even larger community gathering & exhibition & PARTY-CENTRAL area; to siderooms, alcoves, an outdoor garden area for more exhibits, cooking, and vendoring, and the like. EXHIBITIONS The evenings I've been here (note: the venue closes at 7pm I belive), there are dynamic, interactive exhibits that can be enjoyed here. Most recently, my friend Eugene and I made some tiles that we were able to place on the exhibit wall and THAT was a lot of fun being part of the exhibit itself! PARKING It's a BIT easier in this part of town - not perfect mind you, but you will most likely find a metered spot. [Just make sure to feed the meter before 6pm - however, the last hour of operation at SOMArts from 6-7pm would be free on the meter.] THE LOWDOWN For a good time, definitely check out the good people & awesome spaces at SOMArts!

Great venue to look at art. Attended the second annual Dubs versus World art show. Great art work about the Golden Gate Warriors Basketball.

My wife and I married at SOMArts! We had a Fairy Forest theme and SOMArts was the perfect venue to have it in. They already have the sound + lights set up, plus they helped us hang some of the decorative chandeliers. The projectors helped provide some of the forest backdrop. SOMArts also provided security + garbage maintenance. They also didn't force us to use any specific vendors: it was up to us what food to order. We had about 250 guests, and they all fit just great in the space. The walls are adjustable, so you could make the space smaller if you have fewer people coming. Everyone was very helpful. They allowed us to see the venue multiple times as we were preparing and planning. And for the most part, everyone was responding on time. (You know how it is sometimes with art / non-profit centers.) Overall, it was a wedding to remember! We had an 8 DJ lineup, and played music from 3-11pm. It was as magical as SOMA could be! :)

These hours are apparently just "guesstimates" -- be forewarned.

UPDATE: SOMArts e-mailed me on Yelp to let me know they were closed that weekend. They had apparently updated their website but did not have a sign on the door... maybe I will try again and update my review. ------------------- They're allegedly open 12-5 Saturdays, but that's a lie. I came all the way over here to see an exhibit and the place was locked and deserted at 12:20. Very annoying.

When I approached the bar and got my first drink, I understood why folks were there so early....the drinks were a buck! Such a steal and great way to get folks in. The concept of battle of the decades is great too! Each hour is a different decade of music, starting with the 60's. I spent a few hours dancing from 60's-80's music until about 8pm (perfect for an old millennial like me) until the place filled up. Totally great night at Monroe. Cheap drink specials, great music, and I was able to get in bed by 8:30pm. I'll definitely be back again.

Located on Broadway in North Beach, it's always high energy and popping, but I've never had any issues getting in. Also love that there's no cover charge for women, so I can just enjoy the night with my friends here without having to pay the equivalent price of a drink before I've even stepped inside. Even with the club frequently packed, especially the later in the night you go, I find the facilities pretty clean compared to many other similar lounges. It's also conveniently located near late night pizza and crêpe eateries that are still open after Monroe closes for the win, which makes it an all-around no brainer to choose going here versus other venues.

The building was a printing press back in the day, so it's a bit of a maze but that's part of the charm. I've discovered some amazing local businesses. I recently went to their February artisan food fairs, and bought some delicious food products. They had a variety of food vendors: hot sauces, honey, dips, cookies, teas, and more. As for the craft fairs, respect jewelry, candles, cutting boards, and even a few food vendors. That's where I discovered Apisol, a woman-owned company based in the Peninsula that makes delicious sparkling honey beverages. Don't miss the vintage store on the first floor, which has really unique vintage products like postcards, buttons, posters, and more. I never heard of this place until a fellow Yelper brought this up to me and I said SFBox? I never heard or been in this location before and I am sure most of you never heard of this place either unless you search for history of the William Randolph Hearst printing press building so many years ago. The building was built in 1926 as a printing plant for the San Francisco Examiner. It is a nice mixed use building like a nice cozy maze to explore the nice layout and architecture of the old print shop. So upstairs about 2 floors and vendors are scattered so it's like a hunt for them, almost like a needle in haystack. Lol Well it's not that hard as you won't miss anyone. Too floor that where you will satisfy your sweet tooth . Yummy. The vendors that were there were a nice mix from tea, cheese, spices, India coffee , Turkish spreads, ice cream, giant cookies, healthy drinks, spreads, and I am sure you will find something you will enjoy. I don't normally buy stuff, but the honey , red beet, 2004 sweet land Bingdao $95 brick tea that is aged 21 years that can make 175 tea servings for $95, Il Fiorello basalmic vinegar was thick and smooth great texture and syrupy taste very captivating and Taste of Levant tahini and their chocolate jar of molasses was excellent and I had to buy them. Yummy in my tummy! Not sure if same vendors will be there again, so catch them the at your farmers market, festivals or next Eats event!

It was really nice to see the sunlight come through on the daytime with the open roof concept. The music was a lovely experience as well. I really enjoyed it. Given how packed it was, I stood the entire time, even though I had gotten there probably 15 minutes before the show started. There was a huge line for the coffee when I arrived that didn't let up until halfway through the show. They are doing this again in September and I would recommend if you are in the area. The only thing that would have made it better would have been less people given the amount of chatter and distraction of people walking by. I'm curious as to what this venue looks like in other set ups and at different times of the day because it is beautiful, what a nice spot in San Francisco.

We were scheduled to have a small outdoor wedding ceremony at Mission Dolores Park, but when the San Francisco weather forecast turned "rough" just days before our April 1st date, we were in a total panic. I reached out to Carlos at the last minute, and the level of service we received was nothing short of extraordinary. Here is why you should book your next event here: Incredible Responsiveness: Carlos responded to my inquiry almost immediately and hopped on a call with me the same day to iron out the details. He made a high-stress situation feel completely manageable. Accommodating & Flexible: Even with our last-minute request, he was so generous with the timing. He allowed us to come in early at 2:00 PM to set up flowers and told us there was "no rush" to leave, letting our group stay and enjoy a drink before our dinner reservation. The Space is Stunning: We held our ceremony upstairs in a beautiful, dry, and welcoming space featuring a gorgeous mural. It was the perfect backdrop for our 10-person group--intimate, stylish, and full of character. Personal Touch: Carlos even provided his personal cell number for day-of coordination to ensure everything went smoothly. That level of care is rare.
