One thing about me, I absolutely love to dance! The only thing is, the older I get, the less I find spots where I can dance to great oldies, so when I found out about Battle of the decades every Friday at Monroe, I knew I had to try it out! Arrived at 5:30 and was surprised when I saw a small but decent amount of folks here. When I approached the bar and got my first drink, I understood why folks were there so early....the drinks were a buck! Such a steal and great way to get folks in. The concept of battle of the decades is great too! Each hour is a different decade of music,starting with the 60's. I spent a few hours dancing from 60's-80's music until about 8pm (perfect for an old millennial like me) until the place filled up. Totally great night at Monroe. Cheap drink specials, great music, and I was able to get in bed by 8:30pm. I'll definitely be back again. read more

If I could give this place a zero I would, due to work life and family life . I haven't been out for a couple of years, but by far this is one of the worst clubs I've been to in San Francisco. We waited in line for almost an hour, we immediately walked through the pretty small club, all for the bathroom to be extremely unsanitary. This place clearly does not have staff cleaning the facilities at all throughout the night. The place reeked of stale alcohol and body odor. If that's your vibe by all means party away at this outhouse of a club. Maybe it was a bad night but I swear I've seen cleaner restrooms in the tenderloin's public parks. read more

I've been to a LOT of bars, clubs, and entertainment venues in SF, but one that my various friend groups and I regularly hit up is Monroe. What's not to love. Located on Broadway in North Beach, it's always high energy and popping, but I've never had any issues getting in. Also love that there's no cover charge for women, so I can just enjoy the night with my friends here without having to pay the equivalent price of a drink before I've even stepped inside. Even with the club frequently packed, especially the later in the night you go, I find the facilities pretty clean compared to many other similar lounges. It's also conveniently located near late night pizza and crêpe eateries that are still open after Monroe closes for the win, which makes it an all-around no brainer to choose going here versus other venues. read more

Amazing service. So much seating, great lighting, beautiful venue all around!! The drinks were strong but not so strong that it hurt. They were delicious! It's been a while since I've been to Monroe, and it was just as I remember it and did not disappoint! There was a long line on a Friday night, and my friends and I were able to get in after 15 minutes of waiting around 12:30AM. It was a night crowded as usual, but thankfully not enough to be blocking the bar space. I felt like they were slightly cutting back on the alcohol when I ordered my drinks and it was a bit more on the pricier side. However, the music for the night was great, and I loved the selection of 90s and 2000s throwbacks! The crowd was friendly and fun! read more

WATCH OUT BOUNCERS ON ONE waited an hour and a half and this bouncer (indian looking with facial hair 12:36 am) did nothing but tell us aggressively to get to the back of the line?? we waited this whole time and he decided to just be so rude and tell us "oh it's not our job to check on you to be in the right line, sorry you need to get the back, everybody else is also waiting". UM HELLO it's about to be 1am that's so messed up because we love this place and he decided to be the worst person ever for somebody enjoying their friday night and having to wait so long to just be told that was SO unreasonable. First of all, you could've understood the situation we were put in because we were not checked up on at all?! He was trying to make it a scene telling my group about all 3 lines. When I say scene I mean him being so aggressive and making it seem like I was trying to fight when I was just trying to talk about the situation we were in. everybody behind me DID NOT KNOW the line was also not the right line, so they all sneaked over to the other line and it was understandable, but like they just let them in?? You guys could've organized the line a lot better too?? I never had such a bad interaction with a bouncer before but you guys need to get that man checked. He was so disrespectful and rude. He started saying randomly things like "you can record and put me on tiktok or whatever i don't care"?? I wish I'd gotten to see more/experience more of this place but I've never even been. I found them online and saw they had rooms/space for rent. The place looks amazing and appeared perfect for what was planned. We called 30 days ago about renting out a space for our mother's 70th birthday dinner party at the start of December (About 7 months away at the time). I was told to email an inquiry when I called about this and told that was the easiest way to book and get information. I was also told I"d hear back within 48 hours...well it's been a month and I haven't heard a word. I found another way of booking through Peerspace and had to register/provide a picture. Once I provided a picture I heard back pretty quickly and was told they were booked all December for holliday events/parties. It just feels odd and ominous that I got a response so quickly once I had to upload a photo and I'd be lying if I said it didn't feel biased. I'm not sure but this was a poor experience from never hearing back directly from "The Monroe", then having to register/load a photo and only then hearing there was no availability. The calendar still shows rooms available as of today so this is the reason for a poor review. They couldn't/didn't take care of this by phone, didn't respond by email, and then an affiliate responds after a photo is loaded that there is no availability. No cheers! read more

the dj was great but the policy was ridiculous. our friend (a guy) got reported (by the girl who tried to cut before us when we were 40min in the line and we didn't let her) and the guy from the other group just came and grabbed on to my friend's collar?? and then the security guard came and kicked us out without hearing from our side but assumed we're at fault. and then the owner came trying to show us the "footage" but it's impossible to identify anyone with black and white footage. the conversation just ended being us called "passive aggressive" and "rude". the owner was already biased against us going into the conversation because he was not willing to hear us out. in fact, he made a condescending remark saying "this is not a restaurant, this is a club." i see where they are coming from to protect all girls at the club but also it doesn't make sense to hear from only one side cus the system can be abused by people with petty intent. read more

I have been living in the city for over 20 years, and last night was the first time I went to this place because they had the drink special. When they played 60s, the drinks were $1. When they played 70s, the drinks were $2. When they played 80s, the drinks were $3 and so forth. This place is gorgeous, the deep green/blue ambiance with gold cleaning chandeliers & dark mirrors, just absolutely beautiful. The place got really packed, and the two bartenders were working that floor like you wouldn't believe it. Hardly any line; they were very quick. I've been here a couple times with my friends after a night out of bar hopping. On Friday nights, they play music from different decades at every hour. On Saturday nights, they play top hits and throwbacks. Definitely come early if you don't want to wait in a long line! Majority of the crowd are college students, so it does feel like a frat party at times. Their drinks are also more affordable than other clubs. Going to the bathroom is always a mission, once you're deep inside the dance floor. The bathrooms are next to the bar and the intersection gets really crowded. However, I love that they offer complimentary coat check downstairs. Great spot if you enjoy dancing and don't mind the college students. read more

Monroe is easily one of the best nights out in SF. The music is always on point. It's that perfect balance of high-energy but still tasteful: house, throwbacks, and tracks you didn't know you needed to hear until they hit on that sound system. The space has this Art Deco, high-design feel that makes it look elevated without feeling pretentious. It's dark, moody, a little cinematic, and somehow always packed with a good crowd. I come here often and the owner and security are always very friendly. The drinks are solid and the ambiance is great. It does get crowded, but if you have a table, it's very manageable. The only consistent issue is the coat check. The staff there have given me attitude the last few times for no reason, which has been disappointing. I normally don't leave reviews, but my experience here on Saturday 11/22 was so bad that I feel obligated to. I truly hope management addresses this. I came with two friends, and two separate issues made the night unnecessarily stressful. 1. The back bartender was extremely intoxicated Normally I wouldn't care if a bartender is a little buzzed, but this went way beyond that. She overcharged me for shots instead of water, couldn't communicate, kept dropping bottles, and the whole situation was a mess. When I asked her for a refund, she repeatedly took my card, handed it to someone else, then handed me their card back. This cycle repeated multiple times until I finally had to go full Karen-mode -- which I hated -- just to get my own money back. Thankfully, the manager did refund me, but the amount of time and stress it took to straighten out something that simple was ridiculous. 2. Security ignored a dangerous situation There was a tall security guard with a septum piercing and very short curly hair. I let him know that a group of guys in the crowd were moshing aggressively. At one point I got thrown so hard into the security guard that it genuinely hurt. I'm 5'5". I had tried moving away, I had asked the guys multiple times to chill out, and they would stop... until they didn't. This crossed a line. This was not a rock show ... it was a Top 40 nightclub with a dress code. The level of physical aggression was unsafe. Instead of helping, the security guard brushed it off as if I just "fell into him" and literally said, "Isn't that what they're supposed to do?" Absolutely not. Not at a nightclub. And definitely not when other patrons are getting injured. Then the security guard just moved to another section and ignored me. Overall I have 10+ years in nightlife as industry and I'm extremely forgiving. But being overcharged, having my card mishandled, and then getting physically slammed by other patrons while security shrugged... that's not acceptable on any night. Will I go back? Maybe. But I definitely expected more from the staff and the way situations like this are handled. read more

Super packed. Thought it was more of a lounge vibe, but it was more clubbing vibes the night we went, but i guess it should of been expected. You can barely move, no space at all. Luckily we had bottle service so we did have our own section but it was annoying that people kept trying to seat in our area and would randomly dump their empty glasses at our table ..! Oh top of that our host/server managed to spill drinks on our party 2x....which is annoying. No one likes to be spilled on. Like come on! I can't believe I haven't written a review for Monroe yet. I'm a big fan and I have been for many years. Monroe is a beautiful versatile space that is ideal for hosting events. The owner and staff are hands on and it shows throughout every aspect of this memorable venue. I've always appreciated that Monroe is both elegant and chic - while still remaining accessible. The space looks just as stunning during the day - as it does in the evening - not an easy feat for many lounges. It is also one of the few venues in the area - that has a heated outdoor lounge. And a what's up one - at that. I have yet to visit Monroe - since they've updated their outdoor area - with vivid bright colors, and retro furniture, but just from photos alone - I'm a fan. It's perfect for late night photo sessions and memorable hangs with friends/loved ones on a classic brisk San Francisco evening. If quality drinks are your thing - Monroe's cocktail list is well curated and well executed. There is also a nice array of comfortable seating - both inside and outside, so you can enjoy your drink(s), while people watching. And yes - if people watching is your thing - Monroe is great for it. They host regular fun dance nights, along with drink specials; ideal for nights when you just need to groove or forget about your week. One of my favorite aspects of Monroe is its rich history. The building has a legendary past. From 1948-1957 - the building was known as Mona's Candlelight - the first openly lesbian club in SF. Later from 1957-1969 - it would become The Jazz Workshop - housing jazz greats like Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, and Johnny Coltrane. Comedian Lenny Bruce was even arrested in this building - during a live performance back in 1959. I am so thankful that a place like Monroe exists. I can personally attest that Monroe is not only a fantastic place to host a event, but that it is a wonderful space to attend one as well.
