Came here to meet some friends after work. I walked to the front door and the man at the door was really cool. They had some vibe going on downstairs. I didn't have a ticket.. I saw my friend at the bar. That's her!!!! He said go on in. Came to the bar and I waited for a drink. There were a lot of people waiting and one bartender. Her name is Laura. The way she was taking orders, making cocktails and smiling.. greeting bar patrons was top tier. The reason I give 5 stars is because of her. She ran the bar like it was her business. She was so busy and kept it going.. how cool. I wish she had someone else to help her out but Laura killed it. I'll be back to try the Photo Booth. Apparently it's free?? We'll see. I really wanted to love this place because the sound system in the basement is fantastic and the DJ lineup was solid, but the overall experience just wasn't worth it. First off, the location is rough. It's right on 6th and Mission, so walking up to the venue or waiting outside for an Uber afterward feels pretty sketchy and unsafe late at night. Once we got there, the attitude from the front door staff and security was immediately hostile. The bouncers were incredibly rude and aggressive for no apparent reason, making us feel completely unwelcome before we even stepped inside. The upstairs cocktail lounge actually has a cool, vintage vibe, but the moment you head downstairs to the actual club, it's a totally different story. The basement dance floor was dangerously oversold. It was so packed and uncomfortably sweaty that you couldn't move, let alone dance, and getting a drink took forever. To top it off, the downstairs area felt pretty gritty and dirty. read more

Came here on a Saturday night for my friend's DJ set! Fun atmosphere with 2 floors (a different DJ in each floor). The upstairs decor is unique and very living-esque. Otherwise kinda standard club with payment or tickets at the door and average drinks. They do set up multiple water stations which is great bc it can definitely get hot! read more

Went for NYE - to be honest, the crowd was not as lively as I expected and it was an older crowd. Cool eclectic decor inside and many rooms to dance in so it's not super crowded, which is nice. They had an aerial dancer and lots of DJs playing a variety of music. They did the countdown on the big screen though which was cool! And I loved the free photo booth. (Probably meant for max 2 people at once.) The area surrounding it is very sketchy (worst part of soma/mid market) so be careful when parking or getting dropped off in the area. read more

It's time to wake up from the Dreamforce hangover since Dreamforce ended just like another Summer in San Francisco. I attended an event to celebrate the Nonprofit Community called "The Engagement Party " at Monarch in SOMA. The proceeds of the event were to benefit the organization Amplify. The Monarch Night Club is located on the corner of 6th and Mission in San Francisco which has an interesting outdoor environment. It is Nextdoor to the tapas bar The Pawn Shop. The event had DJ's spinning upstairs and downstairs this venue. There was also a Circus Soleil type of performer spinning around the bar where I was drinking from. This was a 4X the open bar event since they had four different bars with open bars. The drink menu was curated and I had to start a few drinks called " Fundraiser up Old Fashioned" it contained Angel's Envy Bourbon, Simple Syrup, and some different types of bitters and it had a smooth taste and was kept on repeat. Then I had the "Blackthorn Blanco" Cazadores Blanco Tequila, Ghost Pepper Cardamon Syrup, Prickly Pear, Agave, Lime which was a good follow up drink . Then I tried the "Formassembly Fizz" which had Grey Goose Vodka, Thai Chai Tea, Ginger Beer, and Lemon. This drink was very sour like biting into sour lemon. As someone who had the drink earlier described it to me as similar to the Beetle Juice Cocktail " The Sand-worm Slayer" but on the sour side . It was too sour for me. One try was enough for me. The rest of the drinks throughout the night had some type of whiskey in it. The music went from pop to hip hop and to electronic music and mashups. The people in attendance were from all around the USA and Canada ( team Canada represented ). It was a good mix of people in the For-profit and Nonprofit world having fun in this part of the planet San Francisco. The party seems to end up on street corners of 6th and Mission as there was a different party going on already outside in the area at night. I look forward to another Dreamforce next year. At least there is SF Tech week to look forward in early October and an event a few doors down. I came here to hear one of my favorite artists and really enjoyed the ambiance of the place. Great decorations and the dance floor downstairs was small enough to feel intimate along with enough room for everyone. I loved how they had a hard kombucha with was tasty and sat in my stomach right. There was also another smaller dance floor when you walk in along with some couches. The place had a lot of plants and options if you didn't want to dance. There are chairs, a photo booth and the comfy couches offering people a chance to sit down comfortably and get to have conversations. I haven't been out dancing in a lot of years but my bf and I got a good vibe from this club as we walked past it so after dropping some stuff off at our hotel, we decided to go have a cpl of drinks and dance, as an empath I can get overwhelmed if there's too much negative energy, this club had a mellow vibe from everyone from the bartenders, door person, security, even the club owner, the energy inviting and fun . It wasn't worth risking my life walking up that street lol. This place has multiple levels and they play techno / edm / BM type of music. They had an aerial hoops artist performing which was super cool. You can wear literally whatever you want here, fluffy fur jackets, no jacket, super clubbey or sweatpants and t shirt . I love the vibe of this place, and the design motif throughout the rooms is truly cool. They even have a hanging hoop for performers, which can be viewed from the bar or the dance floor. Came here on a Saturday night. A really cool spot with a lot of rooms and vibes. The drinks were good and the owner/manager was a nice guy. The area surrounding it isn't terrible, but just keep your head on a swivel. I was hesitant to pay a $20 cover, but I figured that's how much a drink costs, so why not. However, the check in person was really rude. There was no line and I made a mistake counting a few friends for cover and she yelled at me for accidentally saying 3 instead of 4. Whoops? I hadn't paid yet, so she could've just re-adjusted it. That ruined my first impression, so I probably won't come back. read more

I deleted my initial review and rewrote this, because my friends and I had a GREAT TIME at Monarch and Green Gorilla Lounge. The staff were really nice and encouraged us to stay- AND THEY WERE RIGHT. Initially, the first DJ (Maria) was so awful and unpersonable- we headed out (she just kept replaying the same loops -the dance floor was empty the entire time she was there). Then we discovered Marissa/Jeff upstairs, and they were fun, with great energy (and really nice and happy- which was infectious). We danced until we got tired. The guys at the door convinced us to stay for Mark Farina and they were right- he was worth the wait. He was really nice too! House, techno, disco. You really can't go wrong with monarch. Street level(or "upstairs") is a cocktail bar with usually lounge music and deep house. Downstairs is the real event tho. I've been coming here for over 12 years and have some fond memories here. Met friends, met a partner here, discovered new artists, we go way back. The sound system is one of the best in the city, the low ceiling gives it that underground vibe, and when it's packed, such a great club. I'm a big fan of the staff as well and security is always ON it. Honestly not much I would change, wish they had the aerialist more, but always a treat when they do. read more

This place is trash and the vibes are way off. The bathrooms smell like someone urinated all over every inch. There are only 3 one stall bathrooms in this place. The downstairs area is extremely hot and felt like a sauna. It was also way too crowded. Something from their pipes overhead was dripping onto my face; so gross. The people who work here have also an awful attitude and all seem like they are on something. The bouncer at the front separated me and my boyfriend telling me he didn't say I could move forward when it was very clear I was with a group of people. The way he said this was extremely rude. The owner seems off too. He walked by us, asked how our night was going and then when I even began to answer his question he just walked away. No one told us we couldn't have water bottles in the venue either. That should have been explained to us at the door or even prior given that everyone had just come from a festival. The drinks i got all ranges average to bad, but the place itself has a great vibe. If you are drinking on the upper level and then down it's like completely changing places. There is absolutely no need to pay a $21 cover to attend this downstairs club (upstairs lounge is free). It's not bad but it's also not superior to plenty of others that offer guest lists all over the city. The ground level has interesting light installations and an overall trendy decor. However the downstairs dance floor is rather plain and VERY VERY HOT and stuffy. You don't even need to be dancing to start sweating bullets. Tonight's DJs were deep house. It was nice but not terribly exciting to dance to. Overall, this was one of those rare times that I didn't enjoy dancing the night away. I might pop in for a drink in the lounge if I am in the area but as long as there continues to be a cover and no guest list, my friends and I will not return for the club. FUN FACT: There is a photo booth in the lounge but it was broken when I was there. Broken photobooth for young women is the equivalent of offering candy to a child and then withholding it. Ignorance is bliss my friends. NOTE: If you aren't familiar with SF, this street has high crime levels (it's safe for you, just not your stuff). So if you happen to drive and park by the venue, don't be an idiot and leave nothing visible in your car or it WILL be broken into. I love how they have multiple areas from bar to dj booth to downstairs to aerial performing spaces to photo booth to lounge area. They often host fun DJs including many from BM. Gotta be honest...the FREE PHOTO BOOTH lured me in. Friend had a birthday dinner on a Friday night downtown, and we wanted to find a bar to go afterwards. DRINKS - Rasputin: pleasantly refreshing! I just remember raspberry, mint, and some whiskey was involved. The big plus was the mint. It was decently strong. - Rickshaw: my friend got this drink! This seriously tasted like grapefruit juice, but it packed a kick so don't be fooled. PRICES I think the special house drinks were $10, which is a bit steep but that's SF for you. ATMOSPHERE Top floor was more loungey--there's huge couches all around with big tables. There seemed to be a dance floor on the bottom, but since we didn't want to pay to get in (or to check our coats + bags), we opted to chill upstairs. Apparently there's some kind of trapeze acts on wknd nights too, but we didn't stay long enough to see. Gotta come back!
