After I opened an attachment from an email, things started going wrong with my computer and I became extremely concerned about what may have happened. I contacted MicroSec, and I was honestly impressed by how deeply their technician investigated the system instead of simply running an antivirus scan and calling it fixed. They discovered that important Windows settings and policies had been changed, Windows Update had been disabled, normal power and shutdown options were affected, and there were unfamiliar background services and software installed on the computer. Their technician worked through the Windows Registry, Windows services, system policies, scheduled components, and installed programs to identify what had been altered. They removed unwanted Faronics components and services, cleaned up remaining installation files and permissions, removed an unwanted ScreenConnect remote-access installation, restored the Windows Update services and policies, and got Windows Update successfully checking for updates again. They also restored normal Windows functionality and verified that the changes they were making actually worked rather than assuming the computer was fixed. I appreciated that they explained what they were finding along the way in language I could understand. Instead we waited for an hour, much of what was spent with staff trying to upsell us to a new phone. When we finally convinced them we just wanted a new battery they said it would be another two hours. They managed to sell us an add-on battery pack ($50) through an uncharacteristically clueless salesperson who did not know that it came with a charging cable or that the cable, when discovered in the packaging, was not compatible with our phone.
