Solly's is not for everyone. When ever I take someone to Solly's they are either disgusted or extremely pleased. To start, Solly's is a throwback old diner. They make some of the best burgers, fries and shakes I have ever had. The burgers are thin and severed with huge scoop of butter on each bun. Simply amazing!!!! Fun, quant little diner that is reminiscent of the 70's in a small town. The bar seating is kind of fun and the staff is friendly. The butter burger was incredible and I was amazed that one could actually pack more calories in a burger than previously! Solly's is another hidden Milwaukee gem. It's a classic old-fashioned diner (with some septuagenarian staffers to boot) that is likely the originator Milwaukee's notorious ButterBurger. in the few times I've been here, I've tried the full-on ButterBurger with cheese, but never a double or triple yet. In the search of the best Milwaukee Burger my friends took our roadshow to the famous & infamous Solly's Grille. It's hard not to meet a diner who has dined at Solly's who doesn't have a hot take. We were ready for the best, worst, most buttery inducing burger in the 414. It was good but not as good as I hoped. The butter was a lot but not over powering. I did the mini Cheesehead Burger. I finished and was left saying: hmm was expecting more. I think the diner atmosphere and butter has added to the legend of this place and detracted that the burger is just average. Will add the Onion Rings 4 out 5 and the Chocolate Malts 5 out 5. If you live in Milwaukee and want a butter burger go to Kopps down the street. Dining in? Go to Sobelmans. read more

Ok so we just ordered an order for pick up as our first time so I can't speak to anything but the food. First of all if you are a pickle lover they DO NOT have pickles! And their "butter burger" is intense as in its sooo much butter. Do not eat in your car and do NOT give to your kids in the car it was so gross. It was dripping and the bun was soggy and the lettuce was soggy... it was too much. My son who will eat anything wouldn't eat his burger. Not sure how this place has been in business almost 100 years because everything about the experience was downright awful. The fries were completely frozen, and barely had any salt. The burgers were way too greasy and fell apart from the bun which was quite small. The shakes were good, not great, but the service is what really stood out. My burger came drenched in butter so much that I had a pool of it on my plate. I understand that they are "butter burgers" but culvers seems to keep their butter under control. The value was not great. The patties look like the frozen ones you get from walmart in a bag and I know this because I watched the cook put them on the grill. My wife got a hamburger and asked for pickles and onions and to my surprise the waitress said we don't have pickles and we never have. Imagine, a burger joint with no pickles! With all the rave reviews this place received on trip advisor and sites like it, I was expecting a much better burger place than this. My only hope is that someone reads this review on facebook before paying $40 for a $20 meal like I did. Let me just say this first: Solly's is not for the faint of heart (or stomach). After reading some of the other reviews let me add this: forget your expectations. Solly's is well known, yes, but not for being a fancy place with great service, it's a burger place! You go there for a burger, you eat your burger and then you go somewhere else, case and point being they don't serve beer. If you're not in the mood for a burger (or greasy sandwich of some kind), don't go there. If you want a beer and an attentive server, go somewhere else; btw our server was great. I will admit I didn't actually understand the concept of a butter burger before Solly's despite having eaten several at Culver's in the past. It makes sense that you butter a bun but at Solly's they butter the burger, not with a knife but with a spoon. I didn't realize melted butter would be melting down my hands or the depth of the butter pool on my plate, hence the warning for faint stomachs. After we were done with our burgers the server asked if we wanted to keep our empty plates full of melted butter to dip our fries in... Next time I would pay more attention to the line on the menu that tells you to specify butter level: regular, easy or none. I would also skip the sides, considering the price of fries, one fry is enough to share for two and the potato pancake was nothing to write home about. That being said I would try the chili or a slice of homemade pie! read more

Stopped at Solly's the other day... it was a bit of history for my mother. It was one of the very final places she had eaten with my (deceased) grandmother. So, of course, I get the "tour"... where they used to sit and so on. We chose two stools at the counter and, boy, were they fun. The swiveled loosely at the slightest movement. Glad the kids weren't with us... that could have turned into a disaster. It was the "off" hours so the only others in the place appeared to be regulars. One of the waitresses was busy chatting with one gentleman. The other man was folding up his newspaper and swallowing the last of his coffee as the staff was bidding him farewell. I wasn't really hungry but my mom wanted to stop there. I think it was more about nostalgia than anything else. We don't live anywhere nearby... just happened to be shopping in the neighborhood. We both had the regular cheeseburger with lettuce, onion and tomato. Nice and greasy, prepared by one of the older staff women. When we commented how much we were enjoying our food, she made a passing comment about how the "young" people don't do it right! They are always in a hurry and don't take the time to do it properly. The woman who served us was also from yesteryear. You just can't get service like that anymore!! The bathrooms were also a "blast from the past", with a rolling cloth towel for drying your hands. There were a couple of modern touches there, the messy liquid soap covered dispenser and an automatic water on/off that didn't work. But, that's okay, I didn't plan to spend my visit in the men's room. Very good and filling, just make sure your stomach is in shape for greasy food. One side note: Like many other places, Solly's restrooms aren't equipt with a "sharps" disposal. Diabetics have to eat also and many, like myself, have to check BG and inject insulin before consuming food. For the safety of the workers, and other patrons, there really needs to be a sharps disposal. Personally, I carry a Ziploc bag for disposal but others don't. Just a suggestion. Solly has changed the last 3 visits I have been the bakery roll is stale. Why does the owner allow that to happen?

The last time I went to sollys the waitress was super rude and worried about having a good old time with her co workers rather then helping us. On top of that was acting verry mean and talking down tward a mom and her daughter, witch happend to be black. Then turned to me and acted like any normal waitress would. The racism was disgusting. Flash forward to today and I decided to give the place another chance. The service was teribal. I waited way too long before someone agnolaged me. When the food came out if was just the side I orderd and she would even give me ketchup. I waited another 20 min and my burger still wasn't brought to me. This is, hands down, the best butter burger in town! The place has the perfect home-y feel, with incredible service. Kris is an absolute doll- very attentive and so sweet. Had great experience a few years ago but place has fallen apart. We sat down at 10:40 on Saturday. Place wasn't that busy but no one came to ask for our order until 11:20. We watched as others who were there before us didn't get their fries until 11 and burger didn't come until 11:10. Seemed like plenty of staff but no one doing anything. Not far from downtown on the freeway, and on a Saturday, it's the smart move on a Saturday for lunch. I made a list off of Andrew Zimmern's delicious destinations. a butter burger, literally. The dollop of butter on top of a plain ol' burger. I just lifted the plate up to my chin. No room for social graces with this burger. Besides the napkins are tiny. I started with a cup of shrimp corn chowder. The menu actually reads cream soup of the day. The local rootbeer, Sprecher's on tap. There is only one table in the place and 2 horseshoe type counters. Burgers are one of those food groups that have a multitude of requisites and opinions, depending on who you're talking to. What kind of meat? How is it ground? Grilled on the flat top or charbroiled? American or swiss cheese? For years, I'd heard so many wonderful things about Solly's, but could never figure out why it didn't have at least 4 Yelp stars. One visit was all it took. Can't say enough about the helpful, freindly staff. But the burger......totally uninspiring. For this Yelper, a burger means fried on the flatop. Definitely American cheese (nothing melts better than processed American cheese food) . Only served on a trashy white bread bun or brioche style. Topped with a pat of butter and a fried egg......hell ya. My burger bases were seemingly covered 100%, right? Unfortunately, my double cheeseburger was not juicy. The American cheese wasn't melted. To add insult to injury, the burger was slathered with an inordinate amount of softened butter. (Not unlike bacon, almost everything is better with some butter on it. ) Im a born & raised Midwesterner, and understand the concept of being over-served! This aside, I think Solly's is a place that, overall, should be less of an afterthought and more of a staple when it comes to the thought processes of Milwaukeeans who call themselves discerning consumers of the burger. With a cozy, old school diner meets your grandma's house kind of feel, Solly's is quaint and charming. Of course, you should sit at the counter. (I feel very strongly that any diner experience is only authentic if you sit at the counter!) Mostly likely, a nice lady of numbered years will take your order and make your chocolate-banana malt. And the burgers. The beef is fresh, and the bun is literally falling apart...seriously. It's like the thing is swimming in a kiddie-pool of butter! (This, to some, may sound disgusting. I cannot explain however, despite the seeming insanity of this situation, how delicious this is.) I think an important facet of truly loving and knowing your town is not buying into hype. Yuck. I can see I'm one of VERY few, but I really disliked my Solly's experience. I'm not a fine-dining type of dude, so I have no problem with the diner scene, but I thought the Solly's burger was extremely gross and also overpriced. A buddy of mine and I were in Milwaukee and had wanted to grab a bite to eat. Originally we stopped at Sprecher's but found the place to be a bit crowded. As we were heading to Sprecher's we also noticed this place on the corner, small but inviting. After walking out of Sprecher's we decided to give this place a try. Parking in the lot and walking towards the building, I could not help but notice the tables and chairs outside. Then heading in, the counter area with a small table and chairs off to the side. As the place wasn't overly crowded, we did sit at the counter area and waited for a bit before one of the servers came by and asked what we wanted. Not having been there before, we both wanted a menu. So we got one and ordered our drinks and I got my Sprecher's Root Beer (very good I might add). As I was hungry, I decided to go for the gold and get the Cheesehead Burger, my buddy opted for the the Original Solly Burger. After awhile, I had my fries served (before the burger...a bit unusual but good nonetheless) and then the burger....2/3 lb of burger, cheese, mushrooms, mayo, and onions served on what looked like an egg bun with a single onion ring on top. It was relatively big and was tipping over on the plate when I got it.. Took one bite and wow....what a feast it was. It was hot but tasty, each and every bite bursting with flavor. They also have Balsamic Vinegar Ketchup available...an interesting but great tasting additive to your sides. My friend' said his Solly Burger was great too. All in all an unexpected find. We both went away feeling full and happy. If I ever am up in the area I will definitely go back here. read more

I really want to give Solly's one star, but I'm restraining myself. When we stopped into Solly's, there were dirty plates all over the bar, and we had to wait ten minutes or so until they were cleared. During this time, at least five employees walked by us several times, saw the plates, and kept walking. So it felt really awkward, like we weren't sure we should even sit down. I was a bit uncomfortable with some of what I saw. One of the cooks was a woman with long hair, which was tied in a pony tail, but the pony tail was flopping all over the place. None of the cooks had gloves on. Plus, when they delivered plates of food to people, their thumbs were actually on the eating area of the plates. Not good. We ordered fries and onion rings. They were both fine, nothing special. We were glad that they had a ketchup with balsamic vinaigrette, which was a bright spot in our rather disappointing trip to Solly's. Their coffee tasted like poo that had been dried up, ground to a powder, and brewed -- it was the worst coffee I've ever had by far. All this is to say that you definitely expect a certain kind of service when you go to Solly's. You eat at a bar that goes around the room in a wavy sort of circle, so the people who work there are are moving around within the bar area. The servers seem apathetic -- like they're tolerating your presence in the restaurant. It's definitely a diner feel with a diner atmosphere. read more

Disappointing father's day lunch. First, we had to wait 20 minutes. Not a problem. Good food is worth a wait, right? We (my son and I) were seated at the counter (the only seating option) and waited for another 20 minutes for a server to even recognize our existence. When she did, she was short and rude. I really wanted to like Solly's. It's cute, was on food tv, and has autographed photos of famous people that I barely recognize in the entryway.... We went for Saturday lunch, there were only a few people inside. We went up to the counter and were greated by a not so friendly waitress. My husband laughed that a SPrecher root beer is almost $3 when literally a block down the street you can buy a bottle of it at the HQ for .88! I have to admit I'm vegetarian and was happy to see they had veggie burgers, so I got one. My husband had a cheeseburger and we shared a small fry. I also got the strawberry/banana malt, which was ok. Nothing special, it didn't have any malt flavor but the banana w/strawberry is always good. The fries came out first, very hot but frozen in the middle. They are those thick crinkle cut kind. Then the burgers. The real meat one was digusting... the plate dripping in butter. My husband said all he really tasted was butter, the burger itself didn't have much flavor. My veggie burger was the boca "try to pretend it's meat" variety which I'm not a fan of (sorry fake meat products scare me sometimes, I prefer a veggie burger that you can see the veggies in!). I would go back though, it's cute and historic (where the butter burger was invented). This place is a true old school Milwaukee classic. The majority of seating (I think they have maybe 1 table) is counter seating - so at times it can be tough to find a spot. Personally, I think sitting at the winding counter adds a fun bit of ambiance. The restaurant itself is clean and cozy. The menu is typical diner food. I always just have one of their signature butter burgers. It is fantastic! The thing comes dripping with butter. I recommend keeping it fairly simple as the flavor of the basic burger is already incredible. Fries are crinkle cut and tasty. They do take cards - which is nice - as many of these old school joints only take cash. Highly recommended if you're in the area and want a great burger. I can now say I had Solly's famous burger. Still feeling gross from it. It lacked meat, it was over cooked and swimming in butter. I don't understand how this place got on any map.
