I came here 23 years ago, and couldn't remember how it was, so I decided to go with the wife so she could try the butter burgers. First, we sat down and it took ten minutes for the waitress to come to us. Then we placed our order. The waitress brought out the fries, and the portion was like for a child. Then waited another fifteen minutes and still no burgers. There were customers waiting to pay at least ten minutes. All the customers were waiting and looking around as like what the heck is going on. Some of the staff were looking for our waitress. We think she just quit in the middle of her shift. One couple that came in after us decided to leave and said they were waiting for 44 minutes with no service, so that means we were there for 55 minutes. I left money on the table for the few fries they brought out and we left. Well needless to say this will be my last time coming here. Poor poor management. So new customers beware! read more

Solly's is known for their butter burgers. If you are not from Milwaukee, you likely have no idea what a butter burger is. Well . . . the name is the description. A burger slathered with butter. This place is actually a Milwaukee landmark. When you just want a great burger, fries and malt, this is it. Don't expect some gormet, fancy burger. It's a more of a diner feel reminded me of the show Roseann when she had her diner had the same layout lol...A definitely must try at least once when you visit Milwaukee. 100% recommend! read more

Went for breakfast on Sunday after church. Sign out front with the headline of breakfast made us stop. We go inside and have a seat and finally get a waitress at the only table they have. She tells us that they don't do breakfast on Sundays. I ask why they have a giant easel sign on the sidewalk that advertises for breakfast if they don't serve it. She shrugged and said she didn't know. We left but will return in hopes their burger is as good as advertised. EDIT: Came back for burger and service was good, burger was great. Stop #7 of 21 on our Milwaukee Burger Tour took us to Solly's Grille and...um...let's just say sometimes simpler is better. I've been here many times before eating cheeseburgers and double cheeseburgers, always excellent and well known for the butter pond left behind on the plate. But my son ordered first and went big with the "Double Double Bacon Cheeseburger" ($10.89, 4 patties, cheese, bacon, side of fries) so I was compelled to go big as well getting "The Cheesehead" ($10.49, 2/3lb sirloin, grilled mushrooms, onions, Swiss, cheddar, American cheese and onion rings on side +.50c). Let's just say it probably would have tasted better had I not been worried about my arteries clogging on site. It really was terrific, although I'm not a big fan of the mushrooms, but couldn't help but think it's a heart attack on a plate. My son didn't quite finish his, but complimented the bacon as being the best ever had on a burger, although the meat being perfectly juicy, was kind of bland compared to "the char!" of last week. Overall, I should have stuck with simpler double cheeseburger, because this burger was a little much, but if you like that sort of thing, this is your new home! My son liked the fries and onion rings were battered, not breaded, and very good. Tip: Order the Dang red cream soda, so good. And if you go easy on the burger, get a shake too, also very good! Love Sollys Grille. I have been going to Sollys for about 20 years, and I have to say that their food is very good. The butter burgers are to die for. I have a ritual at Sollys that I use nowhere else: i reach into the napkin holders and remove half the napkins before I am served. You will need them! Get the stewed onions on the well buttered burgers. The waitress does everything from memory! Seating is tough sometimes during peak periods. The milkshake menu is extensive, and you might want to split an order of fries. Sollys serves some sandwiches for lunch and dinner, and has an extensive breakfast menu as well. Reasonably priced, and a wonderful change from the franchise fast food fare. Very highly recommended! read more

I'm a fan of the butterburgers in WI but this is more like a burger swimming in butter soup. Smaller than expected. Fried were great and I loved the sassy sauce. The burger had a good flavor but honestly way too much butter and bun was super soft. read more

We just happened to stumble onto this place because our hotel is down the block. We ordered a butter burger and fries, bratwurst on a pretzel bun and cheese curds. I will have to say these are some of the best curds I have eaten. We have never eaten a butter burger before. It was great. The bratwurst had a spice that I couldn't identify which was awesome. I also had a cup of clam chowder which is served on Fridays. That was better clam chowder than I have had in Boston or San Francisco. They seemed to have chopped up the clams pretty small so every bite had a lot of clams and other goodies in it. Was thick and great on a cold day. The owner was at the end of the bar greeting people and thanking them for coming in. This seems like a military veteran appreciative establishment which I appreciate. Visited here in July as we were in the area and have heard Solly's mentioned when people talk about the best burgers around Milwaukee area. We walked in, sat at the counter and ordered our burgers. The service was good, the food came very quickly. With that said, it's about the best I have to say about this restaurant. While the burger itself was OK, lacking flavor and definitely needed salt added, the fact that there is a one inch thick pad of butter, unmelted on the bun, is disgusting in my opinion. I have had much better burgers. I'll probably never return but if I do I'd have to hold the butter and bring some seasonings with. read more

If there's one thing the fine people at Solly's love, it's butter. I've never, ever seen so much butter used/consumed, ever. I guess it's kind of their thing. Anyway, the Mister and I stopped for a fortifying breakfast as we were slightly hungover & had a long day ahead of us. I'm not a glutton for punishment so I abstained from the famous burgers and got a breakfast sandwich - an 8" grilled (with butter!) Sciortino roll with ham, egg and cheese. It was less than $5 and so big I could only finish half. I also tried their potato pancakes (topped with butter!) and found them to be above average. The Mister did have a burger and the pool o'butter on the dish is a reality. I think the whole point of eating a Solly's burger, specially when you're hungover, is to scare your system back in line. "Hey, body - you want some more of this?! No?! Well then stop with the headache already!" It'll work or you'll have a heart attack/stroke - either way, problem solved. The inside is small and very retro, but incredibly well tended. The kitchen area is spotless (quite a feat when that much butter is in play). We had really friendly service and the owner was walking around checking on people and shaking hands. Seems like a place with lots of regulars and the counter seating certainly encourages some interaction with your neighbors. Overall, I don't believe my system could handle one of those burgers but I'd be happy to try some of their other offerings. It's a friendly, casual place and a North Shore institution. If you're trying to fill up your "have 4 heart attacks, get your 5th angioplasty free" punch card, this is your place. read more

Solly's should be called Soggy's. They should call their traditional burger "The Mini'. This micro cheeseburger was $8.00! It was soggy from the weight of the butter and the meat was tough. I was so excited to try this place out after seeing it on a TV show. It was very disappointing and over priced. The inside needs a renovation too.I will not be going back. read more

Yes I was born and bred here and I have not ventured to Solly's until the past weekend. Shame on me? No, not after what I had. Shame on you for letting me go! Upon walking in we weren't greeted by anyone who worked here, however we were greeted by the stares and snarls of the customers already here... for people who have been through this I dont need to explain you already get my drift right? The waitress came to take our orders and give us some waters. We found out shortly that she was also the cook and the cashier. I felt bad for her at first. Another older gentleman came by the table, sparked up some convo perhaps he was the manager or something? Who knows? We ordered pancakes regular and blueberry, hash browns and a omelet skillet thingy. I remember looking around asking myself why is the cook taking her own orders and cleaning tables and the manager is just walking around hap-haphazardly? Then I see two other young ladies busing the tables but not cooking, taking orders or handling payments. This was so weird. Remember I said that I was sorry for the cook? Not after the food came. It was not good at all. The hash-browns were horrible it was full of grease, I could not eat it. The pancakes were ok though. The skillet that my so had was running with grease from the plate. He had egg whites im assuming? Horrible and bland! We ate what we could and go ready to leave. The cook...yes the cook handled the payment which was bizarre and what was even more bizarre she had the dirtiest finger nails ive ever seen on a woman. Yet you cook our food? I wouldn't go back for the life of me. I cannot see how this place has not either been shut down and how it has such a high rating. There is is way to much grease and butter being thrown around here. Fries usually come with most burgers and they are hot and crispy. Their milkshakes are delicious, you won't want to leave without ordering one! How can you not like a chunk of butter? Third time here on the back-end of a livingsocial deal and the place is way packed at 6:30 with a 30-min wait. The hostess was kind enough to squeeze me in so I didn't have to wait forever. The burgers are simple. The wavy fries are oh-so crispy and perfect for dipping in the butter pool or your chocolate malt. The prices kinda creep up on you. The last time I was here, lunch for two was just under $30 with tip for two burgers, fries and shakes. Pretty sure I could get a bigger burger with the same extras for quite a bit less up the block. Chalk it up to ambiance. I was also bummed as I was trying to use up my deal $$ and thought I'd snag a couple breakfast sandwiches to-go. While the menu says they are available all-day, they weren't doing them because they were so busy with the deal guests. One tip I got from a regular was to switch up the bun for the breakfast french bread pillow. I was a little envious when his burgers came out and will definitely switch it up when I visit again. read more

Solly's is the definitive butter burger experience to me. When I first moved to Wisconsin, I was skeptical, at best, when it came to things like cheese curds, butter burgers and the sheer volume of deep fried things on sticks with cheese. Culver's was my first butter burger, and it was, well, meh. Solly's, however, hooked me on the Super Cheeseburger Special, with fries and a chocolate-banana malt. When they cook the two patties in butter, then flip in more butter, add cheese, stack on top of the butter-toasted bun, then spoon another heap of butter to melt over that before adding the top bun and lettuce and tomato... I shed a tear for the week or so that I may have shaved off of my arterial lifespan. But it is just that good. Just not on a daily basis, or necessarily weekly. Maybe once a month, to shock the system. The service is very friendly, and I wish I could remember her name, but the cholesterol-enabler on the grill was awesome to talk to as she worked. It's funny...life lessons present themselves when you're just looking for lunch. Walked out of a fancy-schmancy bakery/restaurant in Port Washington an hour ago without buying a thing. My wife and I agreed that service with a smile (or at least acknowledgement of our presence) goes a long way. And we received neither of those things there so we left. 30 minutes later found us at Solly's. First time for both of us, but definitely not the last. The burgers were buttery perfection, and the Sassy sauce made our fries even more delectable (and sassy). But the real story is the genuine friendliness of Solly's. Why 4 stars? Because my meal was called a freakin "Butter Burger." --- --- --- How could it possibly turn out poorly? Well, I tried my best... but the comfort of this burger won out. So my friend and I are visiting Milwaukee. We have a flight to catch, but we're trying to finish a game of darts at SPIN. Neither one of us can close out our 17's to save our frickin lives. But we still have to grab a burger at Solly's, custard at Kopp's, return the rental car, and then get through security at the airport. Our awful dart playing skills caused us to finally have to end the game without a winner and haul ass to Solly's. Of course, we had to get the burger to go, and eat it while driving. Not a great idea, right? Especially when you add custard from Kopp's into the mix of multi-tasking. Good thing both were freaking delicious. Yes, it was hands-down the messiest item of food you could ever eat while rushing to the airport and also trying not to let melting custard drip into the abyss of the rental car and my clothes. But I was determined, and I did it, damnit. If I return to Milwaukee, Solly's will be my first stop. I will experience it the way it was meant to be... and it will be good. read more

More butter than you would expect. And I don't mean that in a good way. It is very hard to rate this place -- I got the 'peno (as in jalapeno) burger. First -- I love unhealthy food, butterburgers etc. But my burger which was cooked in delicious butter, came with a MASSIVE SCOOP of butter on top. I am talking 2/3 of a stick of just cool butter sitting inside the bun. I kind of wanted to take it off but I wanted it the way the original inventor serves it. Unfortunately its just too much. I ate the whole thing of course, but I really did feel like I was going to puke afterwords. I will upload a picture of this soon, so you don't think I am exaggerating. One of my friends, who now lives in Europe, asked me: "Eric, what's something that screams Milwaukee? I haven't lived here in 10 years and I have some friends from out of town coming in. Show me Milwaukee." A flood of ideas came pouring through the floodgates and into my mind, but I asked him if he's ever been to Solly's. He said no and there our trip was born. Solly's definitely holds the Milwaukee vibe to high standards. From the outside it looks like a house with a wrap around porch. On the inside, it's pretty small and cozy, with a bar to eat at in the center of the room and a few booths surrounding it. The place is decorated with Milwaukee and various local sports teams. They're known for their burgers, and they should be. Their burgers are like nothing you could get anywhere else. They are soaked in butter, incredibly liberally. The burger may fall out of your hands from the butter. It really depends on your mood. There will be days where I love it and days where it's too much of a good thing. But beyond the flood of butter comes the tender meat and toasted roll, which are delicious. The burger tastes fresh and the bun and cheese are great. If you really want to give your heart a stress test, add some bacon. The rest of their food is average. I'm not a huge fan on their fries nor their onion rings. It's not that they're bad, but there's nothing special about them either. It's generic and tastes generic. But if you're looking for something unique and different that you won't find anywhere else, you should try the burger. read more

I thought I was sweating when I left Sollie's today, but it turns out I was just leaking butter. Don't get me wrong, it was delicious, but now I know how people with eating issues must feel when they sit down with a Baker's Square French Silk pie and one fork. There will be guilt. I love the "old-schoolness". It truly is a slice of another era, as is most of the clientele. We don't have enough places like this in Milwaukee. There is something special about being huddled together at a crowded lunch counter with the masses to make you feel like a regular Joe. The service was great, the crowd was great. The food was fine, just way overpriced. We had two double cheeseburgers, two fries, two cups of soup, one malt, and one lemonade. $29.50. Yikes! The menu might be from my grandparents days, but the prices sure aren't. All that at Webb's would be around $14.00. Last night at Sobelman's, we had burgers, aps, and beers for three people for the same price. I felt waaaay less greasy when I got home from there. I can't even begin to remember who orginally told me about this place, or how many time's i've heard "OMG SOLLY'S YOU HAVE TO GO" and it finally happened. I went, I ate and my breath smelled like butter for hours..... it was awesome. The diner counter is an interesting concept for a building that looks relatively updated on the outside. The service was awesome, super fast and friendly. I looked at the menu and saw the "double double bacon cheeseburger" That sounded like a plan let's do that, with fries and a water. A couple minutes later out come a big bowl of crinkle cut fries that were great. Then the burger showed up, What the hell is this monster? i guess the "double double bacon cheeseburger" is actually a quad patty, 4 strips of bacon, cheese and butter. But man was it GOOD. like really good. I now understand how it seems everyone in and around the Milwaukee area has eaten here. it's an experience. the food is good, good ambiance , good service, and it's not badly priced. When I first learned about Solly's, via Yelp, I was warned in the reviews by the amount of butter on the burgers. I thought.. "No problem. Kopps puts extra butter on their burgers. I love Kopps! Same with Culvers. This will be fine. In fact, it should taste great!" I ordered a cheeseburger and an order of onion rings. When I opened the burger to put ketchup on, I saw a "white/yellowish circle" that was the diameter of the patty and about as 1/4" thick. My first assumption was that it was an egg. I love eggs on burgers but didn't order this so I was pleasantly surprised. After one bite, I quickly realized this was the slob of butter Yelp had "warned" me about it. Admittedly, the butter did become a bit overwhelming, but it was still a good burger. I'd absolutely have it again but would scrap half of the butter off. I've been going to Solly's for 30 years. As of recent, the quality of service and the food has really gone down hill. The burgers, being as thin as they always have been, can't afford to be over cooked - they have been the last few times I have been there. The chocolate malts are always one of the best, but allowing them to be mixed in the mixer for 10 minutes turns them into chocolate milk with a hint of malt powder and defeats the purpose of a malt. Finally, employing people who will stand at the prep station and openly voice their negativity for guests to hear: "man, f*** this place and all these white people coming to eat. I don't work for nobody, no one knows how to do their job" was the topper for me during our last visit with the kids. Heard from a friend that this place was good. Found out later that was 2 years ago. Since, this place has lost all of the people that cared(probably retired due to COVID). The service was slow, the waitress got 3 out of the 5(in my party) orders wrong. Also, the butter was lacking!! The cook was slow and forgot(what?!?!) an order. It ended coming out AFTER one of my party ordered a secong burger. Why did he get a second order, you may ask? Because the patty was rather small. Maybe this was due to the prices(the only good thing here), or maybe the telltale sign of a cheap establishment. In conclusion, this top-tier part of the community--which was top three burger joints in mke at one time--has fallen so very far. It is truly disappointing. read more

I came here for a freaking egg sandwich? Yes! Yes! I know, I should have come for a burger, but I was early and since it was 10 am I wanted a freaking egg sandwich. You know they do have amazing breakfast too? Well they do. The hash browns were amazing - totally off the hook with the fried onions in there! Loved it - and it was good. A couple of friendly well fed ladies looked over and said "wow, that looks good" as they waited for two burgers at 10:30 AM! I had a bacon, egg, and cheese sammy on a great Italian roll. Super friendly ladies working here and keeping my ice-water full and coffee warm. I wish they had more on the history of the place. There is a photo of a Solly's with an address that would seem to put the original location in Milwaukee - when a place is a community institution and may well have "invented" the butter burger I want to know where they first set up shop.
