After getting infections from pedicures at other places I finally found Solemates. They take cleanliness extremely seriously. Other places use the same tools and nail files on everyone. At Solemates they use a brand new everything on each customer. They also use liners when you gat a pedicure so it's completely safe and si start each time. I love getting my pedicures from Mary but everyone there is excellent. They have a great selection of polishes. They play nice music and it's really quiet in there as no one is allowed to talk on the phone. They recently got brand new massage chairs and they are super luxe, way nicer and more comfortable than the usual chairs. read more

Always love coming here. They just renovated and got all new massage chairs and lights. Clean, friendly, quick and on time. All of the employees are great! I come once a month for pedi and eye brow wax. And then occasional manicure. Everything always turns out great. And I feel relaxed after leaving. read more

I came here a couple of months ago and I had Maggie do my gel manicure, she was great! Friendly and welcoming, this month I came in with my friend for a mani pedi combo since it was her birthday and we had a good experience, also very kind and welcoming. Today I came in at a little past 9am since that's when they open, there was a woman that works there walking in I asked her if they are still closed and she did not respond, I said "excuse me?" At that moment she turns asked me if I had an appointment, I told her I was just here on the 11th and the polish had already chipped off one of my nails, she said " without appointment I don't know... then she asked my name, and she walked away, then yelled " come sit here" I wasn't sure she was talking to me so she repeated herself loudly, I said okay I heard you. That was very disappointing, and so she inspected my nail, and I noticed a second nail beginning to bubble up also, I brought it to her attention and she said "no that's ok" I told her no it's not okay it shouldn't be doing that in only a week. Needless to say that the rest of my time there was awkward and upsetting. I asked her name she said either Yen or Jen. Well even though I truly enjoyed Maggie and the other nice lady who's name I forgot Apologies, I'm going to feel quite uncomfortable coming back here. read more

Took my 7 year old to get pampered and they treated her like a rockstar. Massaged her legs and arms, soaked her feet, added a beautiful flower to her toe after applying the colors she chose. The service was amazing all around and the place was spotless. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because it's really pricey. Check the price tag before you book so you're not surprised. read more

Worst gel manicure I ever had in my life. They ruined my nails, I came out with weak and Painful nails. The chairs are dated and uncomfortable ,for a place the charge top money for Pedi Mani I would expect to have comfortable chairs that you don't have to raise your legs and feel like you're giving birth. The workers were quite nice but the lady owner was very gloomy and very rude. She was all over the place with her serious and unwelcoming face. She was I'm polite and it seems like she didn't want us there. I've been going to to Solemates since 2017 and have *never* had a bad time. I can't speak to their fancier stuff, I only get mani/pedis and some minor repairs to broken nails. The salon is so clean, the staff is always super friendly and kind, and most importantly, and I cannot stress this enough: ***If you make an appointment here it happens on time.*** This is the only salon I've been to in Berkeley where I don't walk in and have to wait 20-45 minutes for my appointment and where (from an outsider perspective) staff seem happy and not overworked. I'm absolutely going to keep going, 10/10. read more

By appointments only right now, usually can be a same day appointment if you call or request early enough. My usual place is still closed due to covid, so it was nice to get my nails done during this crazy time. Standard manicure is $29, gel manicure is $45. There is one table for just manicure and 6 chairs are mani/pedi combos. The space is in the parking area in front of the Spa and Book Inc, so if you are driving, you will have to park up Vine Street. Granted, it is not the most relaxing being under a tent and there is a Saul's outdoor dining table 6 ft away from me and WASP flying around chasing me, but the service was good and friendly. read more

The kiddo and I got our nails done (mani and pedis) on our mom and child day out. Staff was very attentive and gentle with us. We both enjoyed arm and leg/foot massages. We walked around the shops and visited the bookstore before our appt; we were walk ups so had to wait a bit. They prefer cash (or maybe only accept) but there is an atm at the Safeway across the street in case you need it. Prices are comprable to spots near by but this place felt less rushed, less packed, and more peaceful. We will be back again! read more

This establishment took my friend and I on short notice. We called ahead and they made room within the hour. They did a great job and it has been a few weeks and my pedicure is still intact. I'll give four vs five stars because they are cash only and didn't let us know that ahead of time. That was disappointing when we went to pay (I don't keep more than a few dollars on me at a time. A little pricey for getting your nails done, but they do an excellent job! While getting my nails done my manicurist really kept the conversation going and she was really kind. It's different from what I'm used to. I felt more relaxed here while getting my nails done compared to other places I've been to. This place is located close to cvs on shattuck and across the street from safeway. Parking here is metered so be prepared to pay for your parking. It can get limited but you can always park around the corner and be near Peet's coffee. I would highly recommend calling ahead for an appointment because I've been here several times trying to be a walk in and unfortunately they were always busy. The receptionist who does the scheduling is very kind and welcoming. If you can't come in, they always try to find a time to fit you in which is nice. The atmosphere was really nice with some nice calm paintings and a big photo that seemed like it was from ikea. While I was there they played a lot of soft French music which made the environment so relaxing to me. read more

I went to get a pedicure to look good for a wedding. Unfortunately, the salon cut one big toenail too short and my toe turned red right along the edge of the nail that was cut. It hurt like heck and swelled up. I had to wear a bandage on the toe and only sandals. After a few days of suffering, I went in to tell the salon. They looked at the toe and said it was not too short. I was rather surprised at their defensiveness and lack of understanding that each human toe is different and that the way they cut my toe was not ok for me..but caused 6 days of pain. Also, if I ran a business, and had an injured client..I would have offered a refund at minimum. They just denied the toe was cut too short. So I limped home after telling them, I would not be using their services again. I was disappointed in their poor toenail cutting , some questions about how I wanted the nails trimmed would have solved this problem. And disappointed in how they handled my pain, and effort to connect with them about my injury. Today I got a text message with them, that was checking to see how my my toe was and offering me a refund. This was much better customer relations. And I appreciate the change. read more

10/10 recommend! Maggie is the best; she handles you with care and is very gentle. I had a gel pedicure already on my feet about 2 weeks old and she gently removed it. After, she asked and made sure each next step was okay by me. Whether it was the range of pink, file or cut, even to the thickness of my french tip. She has great communication skills and a great personality. The oil massage and hot towel treatment at the end was a great way to end my time. I've been going to Solemates for 13 years and the team of professionals there has always taken excellent care of me. They are caring, use clean tools, and do a great job with both the massage and the polish. The price is worth it. This team deserve to earn a living wage, which can't be easy in the Bay Area. I come here when I can't get an appointment at their sister store, Joi. I've never had luck as a walk-in here, definitely call ahead of time! I like the recliner chairs here! Very comfy. Decent color selection for both gel & non-gel. I do wish they gave you those little fingerless gloves to use in the UV dryer. parking can be a huge PITA around here (not their fault), so give yourself an extra few minutes to find a spot great thing is you can go have lunch at one of the many Berkeley Gourmet Ghetto institutions after your nails dry for the full pampering experience :) read more

My first and last time here. Well, I am spoiled with a perfect manicure I usually do by myself.But there are certain times when you just want to go do nails and relax. The girl who made my nails was very nice.But the way they color your nails..oh my god I just can't stand it and in a hurry home to remove nail polish and redo everything.. Solemates has some of the best customer service hands down! The pricing is affordable and the results can't be argued with. The salon is in a super convenient location as well; right in the heart of the Gourment Ghetto! I never feel like I am being rushed, moved too quickly with wet nails, etc. Everyone in the salon is very kind and respectful! Drove here today from Daly City because reviews stated this place does outdoor pedis. My mom, sister and I got here only to learn that they did not have any outdoor pedicure services available today, even though I called first to confirm that they did do outdoor pedicures. They were nice and parking is abundant on a busy street. We ended up getting pedicures in SF at a salon that was able to see us and only us in their salon. read more

Very expensive basic pedicure ($45) and I would not have minded if they took the time to really massage, take off the dead skin, etc. but they did none of that. It was in and out. The nail painting part was fine but I think I'll go elsewhere for the price and length of service. read more

Came home to do my own callus treatment 70 bucks later. Low quality pedi for a high price. Less than an hour, 3-5 minute hand rub on my feet. Was the least bit relaxing more like get it done and move on to the next person read more

There are so many nail salons in Berkeley and having lived the North Berkeley for 5 years, I've tried about 5 to 6 salons but finally found my favorite one. Solemates is clean and the customer service is superb. Other salons feel impersonal and not friendly but the staff at Solemates are diligent and nice. I wasn't into getting manicures regularly because 9 out of 10 times, the technician does a rough job and hurts me with over aggressive cutting of cuticles and hang nails. I end up bleeding and not wanting to get manicures anymore. Luckily I found Yen at Solemates. She is so gentle and knows how to trim with care. I am now a happy regular. Seems like lots of repeat customers at this place. Absolutely a gem that stands out among so many. Kudos to owner and staff. The receptionist keeps it so organized with scheduling too. I've been coming to Solemates for several years and I love the experience and my nails every time. All of the people who work here are lovely and are gentle with their manicures and pedicures but still thorough. The color selection, gentle work, and atmosphere keep me coming back. They have a lot of precautions for covid and I felt safe doing my first indoor service in April yet they still have outdoor services for people who prefer that. Will be coming back for years. It advertises as having low toxin nail polish. When I arrived and asked about it, I was dismissively told "check the back of the bottle". When I did and selected a nail polish that had less toxins in it, I sat down and waited 14 minutes, I had an appointment. Just about when I was ready to leave, someone came to do my manicure. After preparation, she whipped out a base coat without ever saying anything before I had a chance to ask if it was low toxin. Also, overall, the attitude of the receptionist and the person helping me was not at all one tiny bit friendly. read more

As usual, I'm glad they don't use the tool that is like a sander to remove gel, and instead they properly soak in acetone and cotton, and then remove, so it's less damaging to the nails. I'll be back again soon as this is my regular nail spot. I recommend if you are looking for an affordable, high quality, and vegan friendly salon!

She told me to…read morelet my nails soak for 10 minutes 25 minutes later somebody else had to come work on my nails and then another lady had to work on my nails. Ended up leaving because they wanted me to wait again. One of the ladies is offered for me to come back later today, but it doesn't fit in my schedule. Won't be back beyond disappointed walk-ins were prioritized over an appointment. Just so it's clear I did not ask for a soak off and a nail design wasn't that complicated.

Luckily their location was not terrible to find, as there was ample street parking. When I walked in, the warm and friendly receptionist greeted and made me feel right at home. Throughout my visit, Shannon shared me with her wealth of knowledge of the various AHAs as well as retinoid products. I love that we were able to geek out on which products to use to achieve brightening effects. She also made some recommendations based on my skin type such as mandelic acid instead of glycolic acid for gentle exfoliation. Without trying to oversell me her products, she suggested that I try over-the-counter Nizoral antifungal wash for possible white-heads that pop up occasionally as well as prescription tretinoin since I had a few hyperpigmented spots that I wanted to fade/brighten. Given it was my first time there, she did allow me to use my credit card to pay but informed me that she only accepted cash or checks to help keep operating costs down. Since my back issues were minor based on her assessment, I did not schedule a return visit. I so very much appreciate her sound and scientifically backed advice (I also follow various certified dermatologists on IG for general aging skin care maintenance); I definitely will be making a visit if future skin issues arrive!
