Solar Technologies installed 11 SunPower panels on our roof in Oakland in July, 2014. I did a fair amount of research on solar systems before deciding to go with SunPower and Solar Technologies, including reviewing several other bids from other solar installers, including Solar City. Several months into having the system running, I'm very confident that we made an excellent choice. I'm very happy with our system, and working the team at Solar Technologies (sales consultant Kevin Cooney and the amazingly efficient install crew) was a pleasure. Their prices were very competitive, the whole process was edifying and hassle-free, they deal in an honest and straight-forward manner, and I am recommending them to anyone considering solar. I want to note that in reviewing solar options, it seemed to me that I was really only choosing between "good" and "better" options. Everyone we talked to would have saved us a lot of money on electricity. With solar prices where the are, and with Net Energy Metering allowing solar customers to use the grid as a battery for free, if you use a reasonable amount of electricity as we do, you can save considerable money with solar. Solar Technologies won me over with their superior product (SunPower) at a good price, and with their service and experience. Kevin was the first solar representative to introduce me to the way in which PG&E's time-of-use rates could zero my electric bill even with a system that produces less electricity than I use (far less). How often do you get convinced by a salesman you need to buy less than you thought? We paid for our system up-front, which for us seemed to make the most financial sense. Out of the gate, based on forgone electric bills, we're getting an 8-9% rate of return on our investment. Solar Technologies had access to lease (through SunPower) and finance options (though a credit union, if I recall), but we did our own financing, so I can't comment on that aspect of their service. read more

After having a tough time working with a salesman on their staff I was contacted by the sales director from Solar Technologies and was given strong assurance that this is not how they do business. I was very impressed at the sincerity and by the follow up from the sales manager which to me demonstrated strong orientation to customer service and so I have changed my previous review. My advise to anyone looking to put solar on your business or home is to be very explicit about what you want to get out of the installation. Double check and make sure you are getting what you asked for. This review is for the bidding process only. I had Solar Technologies give me a bid due to reputation on yelp and that they were a Sun Power dealer. The process didn't start off well, had to leave a message for James who eventually called me back to schedule a meeting with estimator (all other competitors emailed me an initial bid the same day before coming out using PG&E info and then came out to inspect to confirm that bid). James called me back and said he could schedule something later that week. I told him i would email him to confirm date that worked. I emailed him the next day and never heard back. I called back a week or so later and spoke to the estimator Zweli. He came out a few days later and gave me an initial estimate but said he needed to inspect roof. He spent awhile on roof and then checked electrical box. He said due to my set up it would probably cost an additional $1k to tie into electrical box but needed to confirm. (interesting as other competitor included cost and only had to change out fuse and easily tied into box). He took all that information and I waited for a revised bid and or follow up. I never heard from him again either. I had even told him initially I was making a decision within the week. I ended up going with a competitor buying 28 Sun Power panels. This was certainly a missed opportunity on their part due to a lack of follow up and lack of communication. There was no sense of urgency during the entire process. read more

Overall, I had a really terrific experience with Solar Technologies. Going solar has worked out really well. Highly recommended!!! I interacted primarily with Jason on the design and installation of a system of 28 Sunpower panels (panels were x21 series 335, system size is 9.3 kWp) for our house in Oakland. The Sunpower system came in up to a few $K more than some others I looked at, but they are the best on the market in terms of performance, longevity, appearance and warranty (25 years, all replacement costs including shipping and labor included). The design process facilitated by Jason was very smooth, and it was a pleasure to work with him. The installation team led by Ricky did an outstanding job. There were only a few hiccups. I signed the contract and made a deposit in Jan 2018 and Installation was scheduled for May 2018; it happened in late June -- not too bad, all things considered, but good to be aware that solar demand is strong and there's a wait. When the panels arrived, a part was missing and the project manager said it would take an additional week to arrive, delaying installation. I had to suggest that they send it overnight from the factory in Oklahoma, which they did. A few days after my system turned on, unbeknownst to me, it tripped a breaker in the solar sub-panel; I was traveling, so we got sub-optimal production for a month. Jason arranged for a credit for the lost production, which was really great! And also, I almost did not notice that our deposit was not credited in the final cost. Jason made this and the other issues right, so all worked out well... Installing a system has some moving parts though and you need to stay on top of things. The benefits of going solar have been huge. We feel so good about producing clean energy for our household needs and to charge our two electric cars. The economic benefits are real, too. We are on a net metering (NEM) plan with PG&E now; lovely to see the *negative $110* True-Up balance in our first full month. We anticipate paying something in June when the True Up balance is totaled, but energy bills overall should be at least 70% offset. (We don't have that much southern exposure so offset is less than in other homes despite the system size). The 30% federal tax rebate eases the cost of installation (and continues in full through 2019, then is currently scheduled for gradual phase out). We financed through Mosaic, a solar loan provider; it was super easy with good terms. I liked Solar Technologies so much that I recommended them to my father, and he is signed up to have a system installed in Davis. It's a great time to go solar as the planet hangs in the balance! I absolutely LOVE having solar panels. I didn't know how much I would love having them. During this hot summer, it has been awesome to run the A/C without even thinking about it - especially with a baby in the house. I love not having to worry about having lights on - my home feels "home-ier". Bring on the holiday lights! Solar Technologies was an absolute pleasure to work with. They are intelligent, clean-cut, well-educated and can really explain the financial ROI benefits to going solar. They took care of everything with PG&E - no red tape for me at all. Their installation work was very clean and non-disruptive. The panels look really sleek on my roof. Once upon a time, I was worried about panels being an eyesore, but actually all of the comments I get from neighbors are positive ones! They have a really low profile, are above my normal line of sight, and I hardly notice them anymore. And when I do notice them, they look really cool. Great experience with Solar Technologies. No wonder they are one of SunPower's Master Dealers. Jason was knowledgeable, professional, and responsive. The system proposal was price competitive with Tesla and with another company using SolarWorld panels, and offered a better warranty. Jan kept me updated on the progress through the permitting process and scheduling installation. The installers themselves were great; arrived right on time, very friendly, cleaned up thoroughly, and finished the same day. I've since passed fire inspection & building inspection with no issues, and just got an email from PG&E confirming my switch to net metering. Jason scheduled a post-installation call to make sure I had login credentials and understood website/app, how net metering would work, etc. Very smooth, well-run process. Construction got delayed, I asked to add more panels, things changed, they had to visit the site multiple times to coordinate with roofers, electricians, and others. Throughout they were courteous, responsive, and thoroughly professional. They informed me at all steps of the process what to expect, and things pretty much happened as they described. The technicians Daniel, Christian and Esequiel were great. They were professional, and responsive to all my questions and concerns with the installation. They did an excellent job on the installation. Jason gets five stars for his overall responsiveness at the beginning of the project and at the end during the post installation review. He explained everything we could expect from Solar Technologies, SunPower and PG&E. Our only disappointing experience with Solar Technologies is with their project manager Jan who was responsible for coordinating the project once we made our deposit. As the primary customer, I expected actual interactive dialogue with project manager throughout the planning and scheduling phase. I called Jan on at least 3 occasions and she never took my call. When I left message she waited till the end of day to send me an email. So I never had any live conversations with Jan. This resulted in confusion and miscommunication. I expected better coordination, communications, and most importantly customer relations. I believe the lack of live and timely communication resulted in our one day project going on 5 days; requiring me to take an additional three days off due to her lack of timely communications with us; and her failure to manage our expectations. Our solar panels were installed in early May 2014. We had a GREAT experience with Solar Technologies and I would highly recommend them to anyone considering solar. I found Solar Technologies last fall through Yelp (at the time, they had many fewer reviews, but there were all positive), and received proposals from them and a couple other companies. The reasons I went with Solar Technologies were: 1. happy with the competitive proposal I received from their friendly, knowledgeable sales guy, Zweli Miller; 2. comforted by the positive reviews I had read about the installation and service; 3.Solar Technologies is an elite dealer for Sunpower panels, which are high quality, efficient panels with a 25 year warranty. I was told it would take about 3 months from signing to installation. It was longer than that (maybe 3-4 weeks), but once the installation started, I knew I had made the right choice. Our installer was Francois (who has many other positive reviews; yes, he's that great) and he really went above and beyond. He was courteous, knowledgeable and hardworking. He even painted the piping that held the electrical wiring that ran across our roof (we opted not to have it run through our house to save some money) as a free extra and he also corrected some existing electrical wiring that had been done incorrectly by previous contractors. Finally, we did have an issue that needed to be addressed on the second or third day after installation and Francois came out on a Sunday morning - Mother's Day no less - to fix the problem. He was really a fantastic guy who showed a lot of pride in his work. We've had our system for more than three months. It is producing what they said it would and we've got the reliability and warranty of Sunpower behind the product. The best news is that we now have very lower PGE bill; our electrical bills for the first two months were $9 and $4 for the months of May and June. Our July bill was higher, because we were running on aircon a lot, but still much lower than it would have been thanks to our solar panels. One final note is that we bought our system outright and this was going to save us the most money in the long run. And, it helps to get the tax credit too - if this is still going on, move fast and signed with Solar Technologies! If not, still move fast and sign with them. It's hard to find contractors that you can trust, but Solar Technologies are the real deal! read more

We just put solar on our house and we love it! We also bought an all electric car (a Nissan Leaf) so that we could recoup the cost quicker. We decided to get the car and solar more for economic reasons than "being green". We figure it will only take us a couple of years to break even and then we will get free electric for our house for another 20 years. Plus we got our house appraised and it added another 30k to the value of our house. I got bids from 7 different solar providers and we ended up going with Solar Technologies for a variety of reason. We felt that we got the greatest mix of value, affordability, reliability & great customer service with Solar Technologies. They have done a couple of houses where we live and they were amazing. Patrick was the salesman and he is really informed and super easy to work with without being pushy. Patrick was so helpful and he taught me all about the different solar panels and the pros and cons of using each. He set me up with a neighbor who had just got solar on his house and it was so great to be able to talk with someone else about their experience before such a costly improvement. All around we just had the best experience from the salesperson Patrick, to the crew who installed everything within a week, to the guy who came out for the city inspection. This summer, Solar Technologies (ST) did a $50, 000 plus installation on my property. It was a complicated and difficult job, because the panels were placed on the down slope of a hill behind our house, having to travel approximately 100 yards to get to my house. I had 4 other bids, but ST was by far the most professional, and I was not disappointed. Patrick Stearns was their salesperson and once I signed on the dotted line, instead of just disappearing, he was there with me 100% of the time. The foreman of the job or Patrick communicated with me almost every day, and the job was done in a timely and very impressive manner. My house and property were treated with great respect, and much care was taken in installing the electrical panels, etc., paying much attention to the aesthetics. There were several unforeseen problems which came up, costing ST both time and money, but not once did they request to renegotiate the price.
