The only thing better than indulging on Spanish tapas are doing so while sitting on a patio in the middle of Barcelona (with a mojito in hand, of course). After a looong day of touring in the heat, we were ready to sit and stuff our faces. Did a quick Yelp search for tapas and outdoor seating and Sol Soler immediately presented itself as the best option. The restaurant faces a courtyard with a large outdoor area. Because a few other restaurants face the same courtyard there was an extremely lively crowd, and around lunchtime it was great for some people watching. My mojito was refreshing and had crushed ice and was fairly priced at 4 euro - all things that make me happy. I was pleased to see that the entire menu was fairly priced. Most tapas were in between 3-6 euro. We went splits on an order of patatas bravas, ham and cheese croquettes and seafood stuffed peppers. The peppers absolutely stole the show, and came stuffed with a salty and delicious crab. The potatoes were also incredible- perfectly fried and smothered in a creamy and peppery sauce. The croquettes were just okay - we had better over our week in Barcelona. But give me anything that is fried and filled with cheese and I'm not really in a position to complain. I'm taking off a star because of our snarky server. When he came over with our drinks I asked if we could put in our food order and he gave us a snide response about not being ready and being more patient. When we arrived, the first thing we were told was that we needed to be out by 10pm (it was 8:45pm). The first thing. The only criticism I would have is the warm tapas were a little tepid and the tomato in the Mediterranean salad was mealy -otherwise it was delicious and a great value! This was the worst restaurant experience I have had in my life. The staff was rude and inattentive. I was embarrassed by the end of everything. Food was slopped together. My friend was literally told when ordering "no you are done, go sit down". The women working there refused to pour drinks for us and the waiter was rude. We honestly should have walked out the way we were treated. Friend who live in Barcelona longer than me told me this is where mostly local eat. The bravas is very tasty, it costs €3.20 I think, the beer is quite expensive, it costs €3.50, the sausage is nothing special but not bad. Next I will try chicken wings and lasagna. I don't even know where to begin! My friend and I wandered around and ended up on Plaza del Sol and found this place. Honestly you can never go wrong with tapas anywhere in Barcelona... Until you get to this place. They had tables outside and we saw that it was packed so we decided, had to be good. We ordered croquetas de jamon, sausage de casa, patatas bravas, lasagna de bechamel. The waitress goes on to say they only have croquetas de bacalao. Now for those of you who have been to Spain, you know this is very odd. It's equivalent to walking into a McDonalds and them saying they are out of fries. Anyways we said ok we'll take the bacalao croquettes. She puts in our order, comes back and says we don't have any croquettes left. Perfect! Ok no problem we'll enjoy the other tapas. Right? Wrong!! When we started eating the sausage we realized these were barely heated up! We told the waitress, she apologized and said she'll bring out another portion. Well, the top part of it was hot, the inside however was fridge cold!!! Meanwhile, the patatas bravas never arrived! We gave up on this place. We didn't touch the sausages! We asked for the check and will never be returning. I started observing closer and noticed that everybody there only had drinks in hand. This place is definitely a drinking spot! This has been the absolute worst restaurant experience. If this place could get negative stars we would. We came here because it has high ratings for both large groups and late night eats. Unfortunately this place was bad for both. Their Yelp listing said they close at 2:30 in the morning and Google said 2:00 in the morning. Either way we felt it was a safe bet for a group of 13 at midnight. The waiter informed us they weren't cooking anymore and that we could only eat what was already made. On top of that he wouldn't let us break up our group into smaller ones so we could have smaller bills. He would only do one large bill. Despite these limitations, we said okay and started ordering at the counter. He would only let us get 2 tapas per person and told us which ones we could get. One of my friends was in the middle of ordering and he stopped her and said no that's all you get. We didn't have clean tables. We had to talk to another group if we could have their table so we could sit together. When they finally did serve the order it was literally slopped together. The albondigas were spilled all over the plate. Most of the food was cold or didn't taste good. We had one tapa that was barely edible. My friend wanted to order another one for her small child and the waiter turned us down. My other friends tried to order drinks from the bar, the bartender turned them away to ask the waiter (who at this point already showed he didn't want us there). In the middle of all this, the cook walked a trash can right through the dining area to the street. We had to move chairs out of the way to even let him out. This was smelly, stinky garbage. It was unfortunate because our tab was only €70 but we would have spent 5 times that easily. The waiter came across as racist because we are all American. He treated the few remaining patrons better. He avoided us the entire time. I could write even more but you guys should get the idea... this place isn't at all what's described. Avoid at all cost. read more
