I usually go to another dental office for regular checkups, but I thought I would give them a try. I want to start by saying that the office itself is beautiful and very clean. The front desk staff was friendly, the assistant and the hygienist were excellent. They were gentle, professional, and I was very happy with the cleaning they provided. Unfortunately, my experience after the cleaning was extremely disappointing, mainly because of my interaction with the dental consultant. The conversation with the dental consultant made me feel uncomfortable and judged. She commented that Asian and African American patients are more likely to have gum problems, which I found inappropriate and surprising. Dental care should be based on each patient's individual condition, not assumptions based on someone's background. When I mentioned that I did not have dental insurance, she also asked why my employer does not provide dental coverage. I did not understand why my employment situation was relevant to my dental treatment. I also shared that I was unhappy with the results of my previous Invisalign treatment, so I stopped wearing my retainer. Instead of focusing on my current dental concerns, her initial question was where I had my Invisalign done, followed by asking if it was done "in my country." The comment made me uncomfortable, and I have never experienced this kind of conversation at a dental office before. Beyond the communication issues, I also had concerns about the treatment recommendations and pricing. I was told that I needed a deep cleaning, and based on how it was explained, I felt like my gum condition was very serious. Since I am not a dental professional, I trusted their recommendation at the time. After my appointment, I looked through other reviews and noticed that several patients described similar experiences involving recommendations for expensive deep cleanings. This made me question whether patients are always receiving recommendations based purely on their individual dental needs. The pricing was another concern. I paid $555 for a regular cleaning, which is by far the most I have ever paid for a cleaning. When I asked about the price, I was told that $555 was the average cost for a regular cleaning in this area. Based on my experience with other dental offices in Chicago, that did not match what I have seen. I also asked about the promotions listed on their website. I was told that the promotions were "for emergency visits only," but that restriction was not clearly stated on the website. If there are limitations, they should be listed on the website. Overall, my issue wasn't just the cost. It was how I was treated and the lack of transparency.

Of course, my routine checkup and cleaning were scheduled during the height of the pandemic, when everything was shut down. Even though the office was undoubtedly operating on a skeleton crew, I was able to easily reschedule by phone. When I made the call, I opted for a June appointment, figuring that things would be *mostly* reopened by then. Well, the appointed day (today) rolled around, and I ventured to my appointment (Note: the office recently moved to a new location, just a few blocks away from its old office on Grand). Although I was nervous about going in for what is arguably an elective procedure, I am so glad that I did. The new procedures require that one not wait around in the waiting area, so I can't really say that much about that portion of the practice. The new rooms appear more private/set apart and I noticed the receptionist wiping items down constantly, as well as the hygienist taking extra precautions. Most importantly is the professionalism of the staff and Dr. Patel in making sure that I felt comfortable and at ease. Going to the dentist can be nerve-wracking, and this uncertain time can amplify the sensation. I am glad that I didn't put off this routine appointment any longer, as my teeth now feel squeaky clean after 3 months of quarantine/stay at home orders.

I came in for a routine cleaning after skipping the dentist for 2 years. I was checked in quickly and was in the chair in a matter of minutes (thanks to ZocDoc, which pulled all my insurance info so I didn't have to). My cleaning was extremely thorough, with Dr. Coakley walking me through any spots she thought might be areas of concern. I did end up with one cavity (which I had suspected after 10+ years of no decay) which I had filled a few days later. The original cleaning took about an hour and the filling took around 40 minutes. I am one of those people who always incurs the rare side effect of any procedure. I had been experiencing some intense stiffness and soreness in my jaw where I had the numbing agent injected for my filling. I called the office and left a message, and not an hour later Dr. Coakley called me to see how I was and to recommend a course of treatment, and follow up if necessary Dr. Coakley is extremely professional, curteous and has excellent chair-side manner. When I called the office after the incident on 5/27/26 in an effort to resolve the matter…read moreprofessionally, El appeared very indifferent regarding both our experience and our history as patients of the practice. During the conversation, she expressed that she was tired of speaking with us and asked what we hoped to gain from the conversation, which made me feel dismissed and devalued as a patient. At one point, it also felt as though she was attempting to end or hang up on the conversation rather than help find a resolution. Please do not perceive like there was an attempt to resolve the situation on Google reviews by asking me to call the office. Because of the negative interaction with El, I would prefer for a different staff member or member of management to contact me moving forward, as I have already made the effort to call the office myself in hopes of resolving this matter respectfully. As of this review 5/29, it has been 24 hours since this unfortunate and distressing situation occurred at ORA Dental Studio Gold Coast, and no one from the office has attempted to reach out to resolve the matter, despite the fact that I made the initial phone call after the interaction in an effort to address the issue with their front office team professionally and respectfully. As a healthcare provider, it is in the best interest of any practice to value, retain, and care for its patients. Unfortunately, this experience reinforced my belief that this business operates more transactionally than relationally. Their poor communication affected not only one patient, but two, and at no point was there accountability taken for the clear miscommunication. What was most disappointing was being met with a lack of respect, empathy, humility, professionalism, and compassion throughout the situation. Long-term loyalty no longer appears to matter to this office, despite years of support and trust placed in their care. To further add to the frustration, I even requested copies of my dental X-rays yesterday and still have not received a response from the office staff. The continued lack of communication and follow-through has only added to the disappointment surrounding this entire experience. Patients deserve compassion, communication, professionalism, grace, and understanding -- especially long-term loyal patients. Employees should never be placed in positions where they stop viewing their work as a calling to serve others and begin seeing it only as a paycheck. Healthcare should always remain patient-centered, with care and humanity at the forefront of every interaction.
