Most unfortunately I've had occasion to visit Dr. Sim multiple times. Luckily for me, he's a fantastic dentist. I've never left here in pain after a root canal, not even had to take medication after which is probably partly my own pain threshold but also I think speaks to his skill. Who would have thought I would be giving the Dr. who gave me a root canal a 5 star review? Strange but yep...I'm doing it. Here's the low down. Started having severe pain in one of my teeth last April. I go into the Dental Salon and tell them what I'm feeling, they do some tapping, take an x-ray and they pretty much tell me it sounds like I need a root canal. WHAT?!! NO!!! I call their referral's office...Dr. Sim and schedule a root canal. :( Well a couple of days later my tooth stops hurting...so I cancel the procedure. All is right with the world again. :D End of August comes and umm I start seeing a bump appear on my gums right near the tooth that was giving me trouble. I do a little internet searching and ACK I think I have an abscess!! So Monday morning comes I call Dr. Sims office again and schedule a root canal. The soonest they could fit me in was something like two weeks out. Okay, fine. The next morning I look in my mouth and the abscess has gotten a bit bigger. What the heck is thing going to look like two weeks from now? So I call Dr. Sims office again and tell them about the abscess. Yeah I left that part out the day before. So the receptionist makes some calls, calls me back within 5 minutes, I swear it was more like 3, and says they had a cancellation and if I could be there in 2 hours. EEK! It was weird but as soon as I walked into their office I felt my stress level drop a bit. They were really nice and mellow there and it made me feel...mellow. I talk to Dr. Sim and explain what was going on, they do an x-ray, he explains what he thinks happened to my tooth and gums and he explains what he is going to do. There was just something about his voice that made me feel like it was going to be okay. I get asked if I want to see a movie during the procedure. Sure...but I doubt I'll be able to concentrate...I am getting a root canal after all. Look at the list of movies "Die Another Day." uhh, no thank you. Yay, Toy Story 2! My mouth is numb, he starts to get to work and I swear within 2 minutes of him working on my mouth I am totally engrossed in the movie. I love Pixar. Sigh. Unfortunately, I'm not even half way into the movie when he's all finished up. :( Since I had the abscess it had to be a two part procedure so he promised I could watch the rest of the movie on my next appointment. I get sent home with a prescription for Ibuprofen. That's It? No killer pain meds? Uh oh. I go get my prescription filled. Take a pill and wait for the pain and...nothing. No pain. All I felt was the itchiness and tingling of the Novocaine wearing off. Weird. I go back the next week for the second procedure and this time I am walking in footloose and fancy free. If I survived the first part this will be cake, right? It was. I get to watch a bit more of Toy Story 2 but still not all of it. Grr. Get sent home with my care instructions and that was pretty much it. I swear I felt more pain getting a crown put on. I plan to have all my root canals done there!! Now I just need to rent Toy Story 2 so I can finally watch the rest of the movie! read more

No one wants to visit the endodontist so the fact that I'm (along with many other yelpers) am giving Dr Sims a 5 star rating must mean he's pretty awesome. I'd like to give Dr Sims a billion stars just for telling me I don't need a root canal, which I thought may be necessary to get rid of my frequent headaches. However, he deserves a zillion stars for the time he spent with me trying to figure out the cause of my headaches. After taking a look at my teeth and quizzing me about what's going on in my life right now Dr Sims mentioned that I may just be grinding my teeth in my sleep. He told me what kind of disposable nightguards to buy on amazon and even took the time to tell me which packet on amazon is the most affordable. His office also followed up 2 weeks later, just as they had promised, to see if the nightguards were helping at all. For those concerned (thanks)...they are! While Dr Sims was my favorite of the few people I met in his office, his assistant gets kudos for being patient while trying to xray what may be the smallest human mouth ever (or so I"ve been told by my dentist's office). Parking in this area can be a pain, but the building does have a valet parking option. I hope I don't ever need a root canal, but if it happened at least I'd feel comfortable going back to Dr Sims! Just make sure you're calling the correct Dr Sims since there's another dentist by the same name on Clark street. . read more

Dr. Sim is top notch. Expensive, but top notch. I came to him to have a root canal retreatment. It seems that my root canal from 10 or 11 years back had a recurrent or ongoing infection that nobody had noticed in all that time because none of my dental x-rays were down to the root. Of course, since I had no nerve in the tooth it was painless to me and I would never have known. I searched yelp for a well regarded endodontist and found Dr. Sim. During my consultation, Dr. Sim took some X-rays and went over all of the options. He was very, very thorough. I decided to go with the somewhat conservative option of retreatment (the more conservative option being ignore it and hope for the best). The retreatment is in two parts. He goes in the first time cleans everything out, makes sure there is nothing going on that wouldn't show up on an X-ray like a fine crack or unnoticed root branch, fills the tooth with a temp filling, and gives you a prescription for pain. The pain was not bad, although, as promised by Dr. Sim, it did hit the third day. It was much more a sense of discomfort than pain. He called to check up on me the next day, too. very nice. Two to 3 weeks later you return and he cleans out the tooth again. Assuming everything has gone well, he'll send you off to your regular dentist to get a filling in your crown. Everything was very easy and not scary. The only thing I would change would be the Novacaine shot. His was not the most gentle I've ever experienced, but since everything else went so well and he's so nice I'm prepared to let it slide. Another bonus am going to Dr. Sims is the very lovely, kind, and patient Renita at the front desk. She is super nice when you are a super annoying patient like I am. Dr. Sim has been my Endodontist for 20 years. He is a perfectionist, very patient, professional, kind, smart, and honest. A few weeks ago, I had a root canal, once again, Dr. Sim saved my tooth. I am obsessed with my dental care! Dr. Sim reviewed my X-rays, explained in detail what was wrong with my tooth, what his plan will be, how long the root canal procedure will take, and made me feel very comfortable. He educates his patients! Dr. Sims' office is very clean and Covid compliant. Dr. Sim made me feel relaxed in fact, I almost fell asleep while he was doing my root canal!! Dr. Sim also made sure I knew about caring for my mouth after the root canal. I was given a prescription for a few Iburporphin however, I did not take any because, I did not have any pain, infection, after my root canal. Being almost obsessed with my own dental hygiene I never thought I'd need a root canal. Oh well...here I am standing at his office with a referral slip from my general dentist. The experience at Dr Sim's office was smooth, painless and I'd say relaxing! He was very thorough when it came to go over my x-rays and what was going on with my tooth. Once I got fully numbed (which can take me a while), the procedure went by like a breeze. I was kind of fascinated with the quiet communication/coordination between him and his assistant. Dr. Sim is not only a great dentist, but a highly ethical one. Call me a cynic, but dentistry and ethics are two words that I usually hesitate to include in the same sentence. (DISCLAIMER: I know that there are plenty of highly ethical dentists, but I've had so many try to fleece me over the years, that I tend to be more skeptical than most. Please don't think less of me for my one prejudice.) I went to Dr. Sim because I had a root canal that failed and needed to be retreated. At the outset, Dr. Sim was very honest with me when he told me that a retreatment had a 50/50 chance of being successful. I figured I'd roll the dice and see what would happen. He did the work and told me that we'd wait and see. Fast forward two weeks. . . I went in to do the follow up and Dr. Sim determined that the re-treatment wasn't going to work and that I would need to get an extraction. I was disappointed, but I appreciated him being honest. BRACE YOURSELVES, here comes the shocking part. . . HE REFUNDED ME MY COPAYMENT! I thought he was kidding when he told me that he was going to do that, but he told me he didn't feel right taking my money if his work wasn't going to hold up. . . I'm still in shock. . . it's good shock. . .but shock nevertheless. . . So. . .right now. . .I have to go back to my regular dentist (Dr. Shimoda see my positive review of him) to discuss my options. I've only been to Dr. Sim for a consultation so far, to determine if a problem tooth needed a root re-canal. The x-ray was not conclusive, but Dr. Sim was extremely clear when explaining my options and their ramifications. He also didn't push me towards getting the root canal (that he would perform), he just presented it as an option that might prevent future problems. The treatment rooms are really welcoming (lots of natural light) and the receptionist and assistant were friendly too. When I went to Dr. Sim, I must have had at least 5 root canals that needed to be done. I have Seizures that made my Jaw lock for hours, and unfortunately broke a lot of my teeth so bad they needed root canals. So if you have seizures and are looking for someone who can handle that, this is the man to go see. I was deathly afraid of any injections to make my mouth numb before working on them, because when the last dentist did it, my jaw locked and the seizures came. However with Dr. Sim, he was very understanding and caring regarding my seizures and was more than willing to take on the challenge. He is exceptionally honest, trustworthy, patient, understanding and caring, professional and his pricing isn't bad either. I would defiantly HIGHLY recommend Dr. Sim. I had my root canal done here. I've heard a lot about the procedure beforehand, but I never expected it to be so painless. Dr. Sim was very nice, professional, informative and, above all, a great listener. He answered all my questions and accommodated me in every way. The procedure itself was over long before I expected. This was my first dental visit of any sort during which I experienced absolutely zero pain. Even my prescription for pain meds didn't have to be used. I am a dentist and a bigger chicken than any patient I have met in my 28 yrs career as a dentist. I have been referring patients to Dr Sim for many years and EVERY time the patient comes back telling me they had a great experience. So, when it came to who to go to when I needed a root canal, I knew Dr Sim was going to be my choice. When my appointment day came, I was so nervous the night before I hardly slept. When I actually sat in his dental chair, my heart was beating so fast I thought I was going to pass out-truly. As he gave me the shot I hardly felt anything, just a very little pinch. I started to relax just a little bit. He made sure it was very numb before he started. As he took away the decay, I felt the vibration but that was all-ABSOLUTELY NO PAIN- not even a minor twinge. I was able to relax enough during the procedure that I actually fell asleep! I could not believe it! I have never been able to fall asleep before in the dental chair, but it just goes to show that when someone is really good at what they do, even a big chicken such as myself can get through a root canal with no pain. Even after, I thought it was going to be really sore. I took pain meds , but I didn't need any more after that. Perhaps I can empathize that Dr. Sim's strength in not only in his exepetional skills and vast experience. Dr. Sim is the most ethical and conscientious dentist you can imagine. He is a text book case of integrity and commitment to his patient's best interest as the most important factor in any suggested treatment plan. Dr.Sim is a rare case these days, I'm so familiar with some dentists Who up sell their patients unnecessary solutions and they weigh their profit more than the patient best interest. Not Dr. Sim! I can trust him 200% and I know that he advise each patient with each case with utmost care, time and empathy. I seeked his advise for major trouble on few retreatments and I was blown away and literally broke in tears with his most objective and careful assessment of every detail. He spared no Time to explain the situation and proposed solutions with most amazing bed side manners you can imagine for a dentist. He is so gentle and the retreatment on my badly infected root canal was so smooth and eventless. I have to praise his team as well. His assistant is so courteous, skillful, and professional. A few years ago my regular dentist told me that I had two teeth dying of resorption. This led me on a journey to fix my teeth. What I found was a long list of mostly scary, unscrupulous, unfriendly and greedy dentists in the city of Chicago and suburbs. I even came across one dentist who was operating without a license (his boss was on the list of top ten dentists in Chicago Magazine) and one dentist who referred me to his associate whose license had been revoked for five years for drug charges. I did come across a small handful of decent, skilled honest dentists and Dr. Sim is one of those excellent dentists. Dr. Sim looked at my teeth and he was very honest with me. He told me my two teeth were in very bad shape and he thought that the root canal would fail within a year. He suggested I pursue implants which I am currently doing. Dr. Sim was honest with me, he did not waste my time or money on a procedure that would fail. He gave up income by being honest with me and I find that most Chicago dentists would not do that. Finally, Dr. Sim and his assistant Renata were very pleasant to deal with and fees were easy to understand. If I need a root canal in the future, I'm going to Dr. Sim. read more

Had a terrible toothache. Worst of my life. I called Dr. Sims office and he took me even though he didn't have time. He's great at what he does. He explains everything clearly and gives you options. The staff is pleasant as well. No judgement like some places, just- this is whats wrong and these are your options. He is an Endodontist so he's Dr. Root Canal. You will actually have to go to another dentist to have the crown put on. The total cost for the root canal will be $1200 and it will take aprox. 2 appointments at and hour and 15 each. I was miserable last week with a tooth ache and referred to Dr. Sim to check it out. They fit me in the same day I called (I was lucky) and after a thorough exam and also just talking to me and asking me what was going on in my mouth, he confirmed I needed a root canal. It was a painful procedure because I had infection, but Dr. Sim was so efficient and skilled. It was over quickly and he let me know exactly what to expect afterwards. Having a wisdom tooth suddenly go very bad late on a Friday afternoon made for an amazingly painful weekend. My dentist provided some temporary help, and recommended seeing Dr. Sim, who was able to see me first thing Monday morning -- which at the time merited a 5 star review alone. Who the hell leaves the endodontist with a smile on their face after a root canal? Me, apparently. The entire staff is incredibly friendly and professional. Dr. Sim is very straightforward about how the procedure will go, and told me about common issues that might come up and how he would deal with them if they came up. He was very calming and made me feel reassured about the procedure itself. It wasn't very painful at all (and the novocaine shots, which are normally the worst part, were a breeze)! After the procedure, he gave me a detailed description of how it went, and what the next steps were (how sore I might be, what pain medications to take, etc.). The next day, he called me from his personal cell phone (it was a Saturday) to check up on how I was feeling. Hands down, the most enjoyable dental procedure I've ever had. Let me reiterate: a ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE was the most enjoyable dental procedure I've ever had. Bonus tip: Ask him about anything regarding the anatomy/physiology of teeth. Horrible Infected Tooth, went nuclear in terms of pain, and Dr. Sim took my emergency call on a Sunday and got me in for an emergency visit on Monday. Better than just cleaning out the infection and getting rid of the pain, Dr. Sim spent the time to talk to me about a Plan A and a Plan B going forward with the tooth, the costs and the potential short term/long term outcomes. He also called me back twice that day (the 2nd time after 7:00pm) to see if I had any residual pain and told me he planned to contact my dentist about this problem tooth. Thorough consult. As someone already said in their review - who would've thought you'd give a doctor a 5 star review who performed a root canal on you?!? Well I agree....I never thought it either, but Dr. Sim is amazing. And, also like others have said, very ethical which is difficult to come by these days. Root canals are expensive and I had one dentist try to push me into getting one before they knew I needed it but not Dr. Sim. He did a lot of tests and even told me to wait a little longer to see if we could be 100% sure that a root canal was what I needed....I ended up having to have the root canal but in all honesty this experience wasn't as bad as my dental experiences leading up to this with another dentist. Dr. Sim carefully explained everything he was doing and what I needed to do next, etc. He even coordinated with my new dentist once I had my procedure making sure they had everything they needed for my crown etc. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Sim....after what I went through I'm just very grateful I had a skilled and morally ethical professional to do my first (and hopefully last) root canal. This is my first Yelp review because I felt so compelled to write an amazing review for Dr. Sim! I was referred to him by my dentist to get a root canal. Dr. Sim did a whole bunch of tests on that tooth. He explained everything he did and what he found. He gave me my treatment options and what he recommended. I am ending up getting a crown instead because he found that my tooth only had a slight fracture in one part that didn't warrant the need for a root canal.
