I bought a scoop of 1-2 inch madera rock. Upon first glance I was very happy with purchase. As I got to the bottom of the pile I started seeing more and more small gravel for mixing cement within the rocks. If anyone knows who uses landscape rocks you scoop along the concrete to scoop it up. It was kind of a pain and I had to sift it out. I wouldn't have said anything but I tossed the gravel and then the sanitation didn't pick up my can because it was too heavy. I gave a 3 because I liked the rock and the delivery service. I didn't like the hour it took sifting out the gravel. read more

I ordered a load of 60/40 soil/compost blend. I paid for Saturday delivery, but was called 2 days before by someone at Soil Direct asking if they could deliver on Friday instead because they didn't have a driver that weekend. I like to be amiable to these sorts of changes so I said yes and selected a delivery time when I knew someone would be home. On Friday I get a call 2 hours early from the truck driver who says he's at my house and wants to know where to dump the soil. I asked him to wait because my spouse was on the way home to open the gate so he could back up the driveway but instead he just dumped 3 cubic yards of soil into the driveway and left. I let it go, it happens right? Here I am 2 months later and literally everything I planted or re-potted into the new soil is dead. So I paid extra for a service I didn't get and wasn't refunded the fee for soil that killed our garden. We are by no means amateur gardeners and have a pair of beautiful yards to show for it. Based on the way the driver treated us I'm no longer confident I even got what I ordered. read more

DO NOT ORDER FROM SOIL DIRECT: I am so disappointed with the QUALITY of the dirt I received for my vegetable garden. NOTHING GROWS. I am a very experienced gardener and I am kicking myself for not doing soil testing on a sample product from this company. The dirt is nutrient depleted, highly compacted, and absolutely the worst possible investment I have made on any landscaping project. The cost and labor to amend this product is substantially greater than the initial cost of the dirt. I am so disappointed in this company- not to mention the absolute nightmare it was to get the dirt down a driveway, had to hire labor because they would not bring their truck down - a septic truck just was down this driveway and it is fine. I sincerely regret ordering from this company AND IF YOU CARE about having a successful garden DO NOT ORDER FROM SOIL DIRECT. I am far more upset about the quality of the dirt than the delivery issues, if you garden, you understand. Please do not make the same mistake as me and order dirt from this company. I'm on the fence about using this service again. I was pleased with with product. It arrived on time. But the stress of not knowing if it was in fact going to be delivered is a bit too much for me. I appreciate great customer service but I didn't have that kind of experience with my purchase. $800 of Redwood bark I never received a confirmation of my delivery time, or who would be contacting me. I left voice mails, and did not get a reply, I sent emails and did not get a reply, I made sure to check my Spam file as well. After about 5 more phone calls I finally reached a guy who seemed like he was annoyed that he's receiving a call. He took all my information, told me "it should be there" and then hung up. People including me complain about the big box stores putting the little guy's out of business. But if the little guy's really want the business, they have to provide a better level of customer support service than the big box guy's. Or maybe these guy's just really don't need the business. This company did provide a good product on time. But the customer service is horrible. read more

Avoid this company if possible. Erik (the owner?) is one of the rudest people I have ever had the displeasure of doing business with. We ordered close to $600 worth of sod to be delivered to our driveway. They delivered it a week early with no warning (and no notice that it was being delivered - just dumped it and left) and left it in the middle of the sidewalk, to our and our neighbors' dismay. We called to see what the mix up was and request they take it away since we wouldn't be available to install it until the originally schedule date a week later. Erik did not apologize once. He said he could get ahold of the driver on the weekends, but MAYBE he could get someone to pick it up later in the week. Never happened. So $600 worth of sod went waste, we made our neighbors mad, and we had to deal with this jerk that couldn't care less whether we were happy or not. He told us that he "barely made any money on sod" so he had no incentive to give us any kind of compensation (or even an apology) for the trouble he cause. He actually offered a $5 refund. How insulting. Erik, it's your own fault if you aren't making the money you want to on sod delivery. Don't treat your customers poorly because of your poor business decisions. Your lack of interpersonal skills and integrity as a business owner should keep anyone considering using you away. A simple apology would've went a long way. read more

I called several places before reaching out to SoilDirect. I needed 6 cubic feet of beach sand and a cubic foot of gray decomposed granite. Every place I called in Los Angeles either didn't have the products, wouldn't let me see them or send me samples, or required high minimums for delivery. SoilDirect was the only place that did all of these things. I spoke with Eric on a Friday and the samples were delivered the next day as promised. I then placed my order online and followed up with a phone call a few days later. Eric answered the phone and said he'd be there at the scheduled time. And he was. He couldn't have been kinder or more professional when he arrived. The quality of the materials was excellent. I can't say enough good things about my experience. And no, I'm not a family member or friend. I had never met Eric or done business with his company before, but I would not hesitate to do so in the future. read more

I purchased 6 yards of topsoil for seeding in the back and turf in the front of my house. I ordered a 70/30 mix (Seventy percent soil, 30 percent compost.) The soil that was delivered was better than I hoped for. It was mixed very well and was easy to shovel. It looked like potting soil from a big box store. I've looked at what the other landscape supply and dirt vendors have in the area. I would have paid the same price for clumps of sandy soil with no compost and had to buy and mix it myself. Huge pain! I also got the quantity I paid for, you'd be surprised how short loaded I've been in the past from other companies. Very happy with the experience. I'd definitely recommend them. Today I took delivery of sod from Soil Direct. They showed up exactly when they said they would. The driver was very professional. The sod was very fresh. I have to say that I was a bit concerned after reading some of the Yelp reviews, but my experience in ordering pea gravel with Soil Direct was GREAT! Some of the reviews said their pricing was good because it was the cash price, but Erik told me that I could pay with a credit card, cash or check, so that took care of that concern. Some of the other reviews mentioned how late delivery was, but once again I didn't have a problem with that. Erik told me that delivery would be between 7AM-9AM and the driver showed up at 7AM. People also said that the driver wasn't nice, but the guy who delivered the pea gravel was SO nice. I told him that I was worried about the gravel spilling off of my driveway onto my grass and plants and he said that he would let the gravel out slowly... it was no problem. Some people said that they didn't like that Erik answered the phone in his car. I couldn't care less if he answered the phone in his car or in his bathroom. The end result was that his price was good, he delivered as promised, and the product was exactly what I wanted. read more

This was the cheapest place I could find to get 3/8" California Gold gravel at the qty of 2 cu yds. Was hesitant to purchase online at first - since ordering just seemed too easy. Thought there was a catch somewhere since their pricing was about 20% cheaper than what all the other landscaping providers quoted me. Figured I'd give it a shot and placed the order 1 week ahead of when I wanted the delivery. I had to change the time to an earlier time slot last minute and they accommodated me without any issues. The gravel arrived on time. The driver was polite. The gravel was exactly what I wanted. What I loved about this place was how easy it was to get pricing online. I had less than a stellar experience with this company. Ordered a pallet of rocks on Monday for delivery late Friday afternoon. There was some rain in LA and they called me on Friday to tell the forklift was stuck in the mud. Apparently they only have one. Really??? I was told I would have my rocks first thing Saturday morning. Come Saturday after 3 phone calls, more excuses, and more than 3 hours I finally see a truck. The driver backs into our driveway and dump loose rocks onto the driveway. Several of the stones broke and splintered when they fell on the driveway rendering them useless. The driver never as much as rolled down his window and then just drove off without a word. Needless to say I will not be using this company again! read more

Pro: Fast delivery, Friendly Cons: Expensive, So-so Quality I was disappointed in the quality of the "top soil" it was more like volleyball sand, not what I was hoping for to mix into some vegetable beds. I believe it was said to me that it was a sandy-loam, it was definitely not. Many of the river rocks were broken in half or chipped badly. The "playground sand" may not be safe enough for children to play in, very fine and powdery, not certified lead-free, or free of anything else. Overall I felt that I was delivered generous portions, which may be a good thing for those of you needing a little extra, but for me the extra material laying around was something I had to pay to have removed from my job site. I will be trying some other company's for comparison sake. read more

An absolutely horrendous product. We ordered a few yards of their flower and vegetable mix this past spring. Despite regular watering, and shade cloth when necessary, our plants remain stunted and completely unproductive. Upon inspection, it's clear the soil does not drain well at all and cakes easily. As such, we will need to undertake some serious measures to improve the material for next year's garden. This isn't a problem, except that one would assume that with a name like 'flower vegetable mix', the soil wouldn't require this type of action. This product would be more appropriately categorized under the heading, fill dirt. read more

The driver politely came to the door and introduced himself. Was very pleasant and friendly. The driveway was small so it wasn't easy to get to the back but he did it. Be Wary of the nice and easy to use website - that service ends as soon as you purchase. I am a first time home buyer with a need to get soil delivered fast. I ordered soil on this company with a same day delivery date (which the website allows) and was not even contacted within 24 hours of the order. I called the 1-888 number the following day and tried every extension - no one answered. Finally I received a confirmation email about my order and called with the extension provided. After 12 rings someone (clearly on their cell phone) picked up with dogs barking in the background and told me he needed to call me back to look up my order. There is no administrative support for the company at all - the website is it. So you are basically working on the whim of whatever contractor they contracted with to supply the materials for your job. In other words this is the opposite of transparent. Call a local soils/rock contractor and deal with them directly. This has been a nightmare. Nothing has been delivered and I have yet to receive a call back. read more

ordered materials on a wednesday night for a thursday delivery between 3pm and 5pm. they called on thurday at 2pm to tell me they couldn't make that so I agreed to a friday delivery between 10am and 11am. At noon i still had no delivery. I called and was told the truck was just being loaded. With friday traffic lets be realistic, the very earliest I'd get my order would be 1pm. I asked what kind of discount I was getting and after about 15 minutes of lame explanations I was told they'd give me $10 off. Unbelievable! I canceled my order since my day was half over anyway. What happened to accountability? Don't order from here unless you're EXTREMELY flexible on your time frame. read more

I had to sift through 10 yards to get all the unground granite out. There were also pieces of glass, ceramic and even long screws in the material!
