Always a pleasure perusing the gardens at Armstrong and selecting gorgeous plants for our garden. The majority of plants are native to California or do well in this climate which is great, and the staff is very helpful. Not as cheap as a Home Depot type garden center, but the variety and selection is way better.

Thank you, Brandon!

Giant marigold

I have been looking for giant tall 3 feet tall Marigolds . They are Magnificent but very difficult to find . I asked Jonathan , the manager, to keep an eye on them if any vendor has them . He was super professional and diligent and after few orders he found me these beautiful but hard to find giant Marigolds. He called me personally few times and made sure I get my order . I have been shopping at La Cañada location since last year instead of the near by stores because of the wonderful variations and quality of flowers they have been bringing in . Very happy with the staff , always ready to answer questions and help in anyway possible. Thank you

My family and I have been going to Armstrong ever since I was a kid. We love looking around outside at all the different garden decorations, plants, and flowers. It's a great place to take the family to browse and come home with something to plant together. There are a wide variety of plants here and the quality of them is good. We are away from California right now, so today I had the pleasure of dealing with Cyan over the phone. Our friends lost a loved one and we wanted to send a succulent arrangement to their house. Jonathan at Armstrong sent me photos over email so I could see some different options. After selecting a beautiful arrangement, Cyan went above and beyond to write a small note for the family on our behalf. This kind gesture by Cyan meant so much to our family and shows what a good hearted character Armstrong has on their team. We paid a delivery fee of 30 bucks to have the arrangement delivered within a three hour time frame. The arrangement itself is beautiful, but the thoughtfulness of Cyan was even more beautiful. Thank you Cyan, Jonathan, and Armstrong! We will continue to support our favorite local garden center.

Don't even BOTHER putting in a custom order at the La Canada Armstrong. We placed an order, we're told it would take 2-3 weeks for the plants to come in. After 4+ weeks I called to check where they were and they didn't know - they told me an order specialist would call me back. Of course, no one called me back. So a couple weeks later I go to ask in person. First, they can't find my order. Then a manager came over, found my order and said most likely we wont get the plants this year. That's GREAT to know after I've waited 2 months for the plants I was expecting to receive. They said they would call the supplier and give me a call with an update. I never received that call. So - terrible customer service and nothing to show for my order.

I very seldom have the opportunity to come out here, but really enjoy the expansive location that occupies two lots across from each other. The main store is rather small, but the selection of trees is much larger than other Armstrong locations. To me, it's relaxing shopping for trees and ornaments for the yard. Today, it was just hummingbird nectar, as there are few flowers blossoming during the winter. My next purchase may be a sequoia tree, as we lost our eucalyptus during a wind storm two years ago. I gotta admit, the gardening history of my grandfather down to me is strong, and I hope to help the environment during all my gardening!

I was thinking of using epoxy-stabilized gravel. I had other matching rock in the front yard. I expected to use something smaller per the epoxy maker's recommendations. Alan, Standard Design Group's designer, recommended using 3/4" crushed rock so it would match the pathway through the center of the front yard. This was terrible advice. Epoxy-coated rock is much darker than uncoated rock, so matching the size was irrelevant. The epoxy-coated 3/4" rock has enormous spaces between the rocks that trap trash and leaves and allow weeds, wildflowers, and the neighboring palm trees to germinate in them. Weeding the porous structure is very difficult. Pulling the wildflowers has broken loose large chunks of the epoxy-coated rock. Small chunks and individual rocks are breaking free from foot traffic. Alan never visited the site. He underestimated the amount of epoxy required. The installation crew's foreman was going to leave patches of the rock uncoated. When I saw it and told him that it was not what I expected, he had the workers mix some of the already coated and curing rock with the dusty, uncoated rock. This resulted in weak bonding with even larger spaces between the rocks. There were still uncoated patches left. I contacted Standard Design Group by email after the installation and again after chunks of rock began breaking free. I did not receive a response.

And subsequently sought some of my local nurseries, pottery in hand, to find a suitable replacement plant. The first one I tried was a super hip spot in Highland Park. They were closed, no hours posted. IG famous? Then another on Fig. Almost no stock, nobody working. The Silver Lake one I had frequented for years was empty, but the dude I spoke with said 'yeah, pick out the plant you want.' I said 'well that's the part I could use some help with.' He pretended not to hear. I left. I remembered a spot on York but couldn't find and and then recalled the name: BLVD. Turns out they have one in Pasadena. GPS said 15 minutes. Let's do this. I found it and parked easily. Impressive stock, elevated minimal design, lots of concrete and stone planters, great pots, lots of texture, and a curated selection, from super cool architectural plants all the way down to humble basil. I approached a group of men resting under an awning. Turns out they'd just built it. Ramon jumped right in and showed me why BLVD is the absolute best. It was a blisteringly hot day but he showed me lots of options and talked everything through with a super positive attitude and lots of great information. Truly a first class experience. Love the interior space too, lots of room to see how plants and their vessels play out aesthetically. We settled on a Queensland bottle tree -- he planted it and gave it a proper zhuzh with some gravel, and sent me on my way, beautiful plant in my car. The experience was so positive that I'm plotting more foliage upgrades. Keep you posted. Until then, thank you BLVD, thank you Ramon.
