I've been in the Vancouver area more often lately so I decided to try some boba shops out. I came across an Instagram reel of Softea and saw how cute the deco of the place is and their drinks and soft serve also looked good so I decided to stop by on a Sunday afternoon.
My friends and I ordered 6 different things to try as follows:
1. Ube + vanilla soft serve swirl: 6/10 - Vanilla is always a safe bet so that was good, but unfortunately the ube wasn't strong. It tasted more like just vanilla with a faint flavor of ube. I prefer Matcha Cafe Maiko's ube soft serve much more as the ube fragrance is much stronger! Their soft serve wasn't as creamy as I hoped it would be too.
2. Ube + matcha soft serve: 6/10 - The matcha was a bit on the bitter side so it was just alright. Once again, Matcha Cafe Maiko's matcha offerings are much better imo!
3. Taro Tornado: 0/10 - This was a huge disappointment. I've been a lifelong taro enthusiast so I try taro anywhere that offers it, which means of course I tried it here. I had high expectations but was met with regret. There was no taste of taro at all. I don't know how to describe it exactly, but it had a weird stale nutty taste and an even worse aftertaste. It was just bad. Mind you, I ordered everything original, no milk subs or sugar adjustments. My friends also tried it and agreed that is was just bad. It was so bad that we just threw it away as it just tasted super off. I've had plenty of good taro milk teas before and this wasn't even close.
4. Roasted oolong milk tea: 0/10 - Another let down. Once again, I ordered it with no adjustments but it tasted so watered down. There was only a slight tea flavor. We also threw this one out as it was pointless to drink what tasted like watery milk with a hint of tea. Yin's tea in Portland has a much better oolong tea as their's has a strong tea flavor balanced by creamy homemade milk and perfect sweetness level.
5. Lychee green tea: 8/10 - Pretty good. It has good sweetness level and lychee+tea flavor.
6. Strawberry jasmine tea: 8/10 - Also pretty good. Good sweetness and flavor as well.
Overall, this was a disappointing experience. I really wanted to like the place as their deco and capybara theme was very cute and aesthetic (pic worthy!). I must also mention their staff were friendly and the service was fast and good, so I appreciated that. It's just their product offerings weren't good and overhyped imo. The soft serve flavors weren't strong and the texture isn't as creamy as I've had at other places. Their milk teas aren't good and I definitely would not get again. The best thing was the fruit teas. They were decently good and I would drink it again.
This was a one time try type of place for me. For now, I will not be coming back to Softea. If they ever update their menu and/or improve their drinks and soft serve, then perhaps I'll give it another chance then, but as of my recent visit, I wouldn't recommend trying. I would rather get drinks from Daboba that's 10 minutes away. Their drinks are actually amazing and worth coming back for (as I've been stopping by there at least once a week!).
Softea has good ambiance, deco, and vibes, fast service, and friendly staff, but at the end of the day, I came to try their drinks and soft serve and those were a huge disappointment so I will not be coming back. read more
