I stopped by for breakfast on Thanksgiving morning. I appreciated their restaurant being open on a Holiday and more so the fact they are an independent business and not associated with a regional or national chain. The restaurant serves Pan-Latin menu items in a fast casual setting. I opted for the Media Manana which is a Cuban pressed sandwich consisting of two eggs, ham, Swiss cheese on sweet egg bread. My order came out quickly from the kitchen and was brought out by a friendly server. The sandwich was delicious with the right balance of ingredients and flavor. The establishment has both indoor seating and outdoor covered patio seating. There is also a large bar in the interior of the restaurant with numerous individual bar seats. Went to this place a while a go and it was a mediocre experience. The food was okay, nothing special about it. The restaurant is clean and nice, again: nothing special about it. What really bothered us was the service, a couple of servers would keep staring at us weirdly, also they would come WAY too often ask if we needed anything, I mean every 2-3 minutes, which did make me feel a bit uncomfortable because it didn't seem the real reason they were coming over so often to our table. I was in Orlando to visit my grandmother in May and returned in July. Both times I made it a point to come to Sofrito even though she lives in St. Cloud. The thing I miss most about living in Kissimmee is the Puerto Rican food. So in May when I stumbled on Sofrito I was so happy to have some delicious pernil. I miss pernil so much! In May I had the pernil sandwich with a Kola Champagne. Omg it took me back to my childhood. I returned in July and stayed at the Hampton Inn down the street specifically because it was close to Sofrito lol. I had Sofrito for breakfast and dinner each day. The food quantity was great but the quality was lagging. I had the lomo Saltado and it was good but not outstanding. Flavor was almost there by almost I mean it was missing a kick of something. It came out warmish not hot. The empanada was a tad bland as well. The Cuban sandwich was good. Bread was really good pressed and everything melded very well. The fresh juices were very good and freshly made. My favorite was the sauces as they are all made in house and were very delicious. Their version of ranch was great on fries and yucca and I'd go back just for that. All in all it seemed a bit like cafeteria food over a scratch made kitchen that it is. Got a cubano and Tres leches. The cubano looked great, but lacked flavor. I barely tasted the mustard, and the ham + pork were barely salted (yes, the ham lacked flavor). The strongest flavor by miles are the 2 slices of pickles. Overall sandwich was kind of dry too. The Tres leches came in a plastic container and did not look like they made it. However, my son did not want Latin/Cuban food so he ordered chicken tenders and fries. After taking a couple of bites, he realized the chicken was undercooked in the middle. We all know that eating raw chicken can lead to health issues, so I reported the situation to the staff. The owner was apologetic and decided to refund our money, promising to credit the amount back to our credit card. However, two weeks had passed, and we still hadn't seen any refund. I called the restaurant, and they assured me that it would appear in our account soon. Unfortunately, it never did. I'm writing this to highlight how such situations can happen, where restaurants make promises to return your money but fail to follow through. Alas near my Lake Buena Vista hotel was a Latin America joint called Sofrito. It was good food in good portions. The place is a fast causal format: you order first at a station near the front and you get a number for your seat. The service was indeed very fast: I got my dish of shredded pork in no time. Did I mention the portions are huge? There was so much protein I was able to top both my salad and rice with it. The yuca fries are solid, topped with chimi churri sauce. The portions for the side dish was much smaller- but not complaining since the entree was gigantic.
