Simple but done well. Upon entry, I knew I would enjoy this place from the aromas kicking around. Menus are hanging from hooks on the wall and orders are placed at the counter. Grab your number stand and find seating indoors at the table or bar or the covered patio. I ordered the cachapa filled with pulled pork. Wow, I need to find a place back in Chicago that makes this. It's a cornmeal pancake filled with a thick slice of creamy cheese and tender pulled pork. I ordered the Orange Blossom Pilsner which was delightful to wash it down. I don't understand the whole concept of this restaurant. They have mixed Hispanic food. The menus are not in Spanish. Food was absolutely delicious that we came here twice while we were in town. Some incredible Latin flavors are served with a side of miss-management at this unique and affordable eatery. It's really a tragic and sad story of a restaurant with so much potential. But they are failing. Most of the food we ordered at Sofrito was incredible--with just a couple of miss-steps, namely dry and slightly tough boiled yuca and a piece of chicken breast that was not cooked to my wife's liking. Their Churrasco Steak and Roast Pork are spectacular, served with a surprisingly tasty salad with a tropical flair, and wonderfully savory black beans. We enjoyed the Cuban and Colombian empanadas as well, fresh and flavorful. After more than five visits at various days of the week over the past year or so, the real question is why has management continued to allow service to be slow and inattentive. If you need a refill or anything else after you order, prepare to ask multiple times. Need a drink or water refill? You might as well decide to get it yourself, or it might never happen even after asking like a broken record. Our most recent visit to Sofrito was during a slower period of the day, an early bird dinner or late lunch, around 3:30p. More than five tables around us were dirty with used plates piled in an unsightly mess, most remaining on tables even after we ate and got up to leave. I even spotted one dirty table in the outdoor dining area that must have been there since midday. To me this is an indication of poor management and employees who could care less--training and leadership must be lacking otherwise the tables would be spotless almost immediately after customers finish their meals. Instead the very few staff we did see in the dining room were more interested in socializing with each other rather than serving the dozen or so customers in the dining area. If you choose to visit I suggest withholding a tip untill after your meal, since their ordering system requires payment before being served and the computer asks you for a tip when paying. You can say no tip and provide cash later but I felt guilty doing so every time, later regretting it after experiencing terrible service. I really want to love Sofrito. I recognize at least someone in the kitchen has passion and pride in the food they serve--I really can taste. But as a hospitality business they leave a lot to be desired when it comes to serving their customers. read more

This was one of my husband's and I favorite place to eat while we were on vacation in Orlando, Florida. We came here on New Years Eve. You order first, take your number, get seated and the food will be brought to you. The guy who took our order was friendly and helpful. For food, we started out with 2 empanadas. A Cuban chicken empanada and a Colombian empanada. They were both very delicious but we liked more the Colombian empanada. For our main courses, my husband ordered the Churrassco with a side of yellow rice, black beans, and these little fried potatoes with green sauce on top. The meat was tender and the green sauce on top of the potatoes kind of tasted like pesto. I ordered the pollo a la plancha with a side of yellow rice, black beans, and French fries. Nothing special about the French fries but still good. The chicken was also tender and flavorful. Yellow rice was yummy. The black beans didn't taste like canned beans so that was a plus for me. My friends and I, however, were getting tired of feeling gouged for your everyday, safe, corporate family style, menus. Based on the Yelp reviews, we decided to give Sofrito a try. As usually the case, the yelp reviewers came through. This place is fantastic. My friends and I could not make up our minds on what to have so we ordered a few plates and ate family style. You'll see several pictures of the cachapa. It is a must try. We tried it with the shredded beef, because we thought it needed meat, like everything else that we eat. We were wrong. While it was still good, with the shredded beef, it was totally unnecessary. We also had an collection of empanadas and one other (we dove in and forgot which dish we ate). I will admit the ambiance is a bit lacking so bring your iPhone packed with classical latin guitar music and you'll have a wonderful dining experience. read more

Good place to eat but I noticed a few dingies. I waited for my order for about 15 minutes before I realized she had only charged me for a coke. I went back to reorder and when I got back my table it was clean. My order number, my drink all gone. Did I leave?? My order came in and he placed on my table, thank you and left. You have to ask "can I get you anything else? Is this ok?" So I had to get up and ask for napkins and utensils. Little crap like that that can make you loose a customer. Not to mention high volume pit bull music. Dang.. In the end I ordered a medianoche (Cuban sandwich) and it was good. A little on the dry side but I finished it nevertheless. Will I come back? The menu was simple to read with nice descriptions for those not familiar with Latin food. The set up is nice, you order and pay upon entry then sit and wait to be served your food. Time efficient to say the least. Now to the best part...the food! It was DELICIOUS, every last morsel took me to my childhood. Litetally more than food, it was a full experience. The croquetas de jamòn were my favorite! Hadn't ate them since my Miami days and 10 years later they were even better than I recall.
