Picture this, it's New Year's Eve and you're spending it with your ninety-eight (98) year old grandmother who never has a craving for anything but now somehow wants pizza. You haven't lived at home I'm almost twenty (20) years and your go to place has gone out of business and your other standby is closed. Enter Grubhub and Sofia Pizza to save the day. I ordered a large cheese pie, garlic knots with a side of marinara and soda. Shortly after placing my order I got a call from Sofia Pizza informing me that I wasn't the only one wanting garlic knots and they were sold out. They replaced the knots with garlic bread and the wait for delivery began. Grubhub estimated at least an hour wait for delivery but the food arrived hot and fast in about forty-five (45) minutes. The pizza was absolutely delicious with the perfect amount of cheese with a crispy crust. The garlic bread was meh, but that pizza was phenomenally delicious. My grandma who we usually have to cajole into eating tore the pizza apart too so she also gives it two thumbs up. Next time I'm in New York, I'll definitely be ordering again and hopefully it will include garlic knots. :)

Best food you will ever try from such a small location. The pasta ( pene alla vodka with grill chicken ) was so amazing. Pizza buffalo chicken nice and spicy. Food was good, fresh, warm, fast delivery.

Love their pizza, but most of all their service. Always a pleasant experience. Yesterday we ordered 2 salads on their menu, the new Apple, Orange, and walnut arugula salad and Caprese Salad. One word-- Yum!

Baked ziti - 2/5 - Didn't really look like baked ziti. Looked more like ziti marinara. Barely any mozzarella or ricotta. But otherwise, ok. Fettucini Alfredo - 5/5 Creamy, perfectly cooked noodles, delicious sauce, a hearty portion - Absolutely fantastic. Penne alla vodka - 3 out of 5. Large portions. It smelled fantastic. They gave a nice serving of Italian bread on the side, but the sauce had an odd taste - like burnt plastic. I find this to be the case with a few pizza places in this area - not sure why. The pasta was cooked well, they gave ample sauce, and I loved that they even included a side of Parmesan without me asking. But the after-taste of the sauce just wasn't enjoyable, and it was far too tomato-based with very little cream. I'd probably opt for another pasta dish next time I come here, and pass on the penne alla vodka in the future. [edit] - I added some light cream to the sauce and it improved it 10-fold. Covered up the plastic-taste and I'm now able to enjoy my meal! Hurrah! But if you don't have cream at your disposal, expect to be slightly disappointed. :\ Caesar salad - 5 out of 5. For a family-run pizza joint, this Caesar salad is everything you'd expect. A nice portion size, croutons, Parmesan, and they don't skimp on the dressing (which is quite flavorful). This will be my new go-to spot for Caesar salads Spinach roll - 4.5 out of 5. Quite delicious. And they actually cream the spinach here, instead of putting whole leaves in the roll, which is always appreciated. They don't skimp on the cheese, which doesn't have a cheap taste, and the dough is well flavored and cooked perfectly. There's even some sauteed garlic in there for good measure! My new go-to spinach roll in the area as well. Garlic knots - 5 out of 5. They don't skimp on the quantity, and they're *super* garlicky and flavorful. I'm not sure why they appear green (perhaps parsley?) Either way - delicious! Shrimp parm - 3.5 (rated by my boyfriend) - shrimp is breaded and deep fried, good cheese distribution, bread is warm and crusty.. Only issue comes from a lot of mouthfuls of nothing but bread and sauce. Definitely could've used some more shrimp. Still, good flavor. Overall, outside of the plain slices (I find something a little off with them, but can't pinpoint what...), the lack of cream in the penne alla vodka, and the lack of ricotta and mozzarella in the baked ziti, I really like this place. By far the 2nd best Italian food options within delivery of my apartment (2nd to Anthony's on Ave. X - which pretty much blows everyone else out of the water). But I would recommend this place to anyone looking to get pizza in the South Brooklyn area.

This place set up after the other place was flooded out during Hurricane Sandy

Sophia Pizza is on the block that was flooded out during Hurricane Sandy, so this place is relatively new. As such, there isn't much to tweak. It fits the mold of a reliably good pepperoni and buffalo chicken pizza place. The decor is basic and the pricing isn't posted (don't worry, there are to-go menus). A word on the pricing, the per slice cost is a little higher than I would expect for the neighborhood. This place is in the Coney Island/Sheepshead Bay/Gravesend area not the East Village, but two slices should be enough for a hungry person, so I guess volume wise the pricing is consistent. Maybe, I'm just a spoiled, hard-to-impress, Brooklynite? I gave it three stars because it is a good restaurant but not a place you would go to try something new, unless you were from out of town and categorically unfamiliar with the concept of a pizza-by-the-slice shop. $3 for a pepperoni slice? Yeah, okay.

Overall it gives upscale vibe and is priced accordingly. Mostly big celebrations on weekends with very mixed crowd. Couch as a seating arrangement was not too comfortable, possibly because of half moon shape, heat was in-and- out but because of entry door in first parlor, there's a constant draft, probably feels better in warmer weather. All staff were friendly, polite and joked around at all times making it welcoming. Service was great until 2 big parties showed up and pretty much took over most service in first parlor which led to delays for the rest of us there. With that being said, our waiter remembered I asked for a bday candled dessert as soon as we sat down and it was delivered at the appropriate time. Food was good, loved tartar, black mussels with amazing sauce (wish they gave more bread for it), rack of lamb cooked to perfection (wish it was cut before plating and thickened side sauce), beef stroganoff thinly cut with flavorful mushroom sauce, steak - was delicious and cooked as requested but lacked seasoning on meat but not garnish. Avocado salad and octopus were uneventful. Drinks were good as well as desserts. Overall I'd definitely come back for dishes we loved.

There were some clear great parts of my dining experience and then some less good parts... let me start with the good... The food was delicious and super authentic. I ordered the Tajik Pilaf, which was $14.95 for a huge plate of rice, carrots, and beef, so great value. The rice had some kind of delicious sauce which added a really nice savory flavor and the carrots were cooked well too. The meat was actually my least favorite part of this place, as it was slightly chewy as opposed to tender (but not bad). I also tried the chicken kebab, which I was impressed by - the meat was very juicy, tender, and seasoned nicely. The interior of the restaurant is nicely decorated in a Tajik / central Asian style with a relaxed environment. There were just a couple other groups dining there, so finding a table was not an issue at all. The owner was constantly roaming around the restaurant (in a good, attentive way), frequently checking in on us and being super friendly, helpful, and welcoming. He made us feel at home and gave our experience a home-cooked meal kind of vibe. Now for the not so good part of our experience... the rest of the service... Right off the bat, after we were seated, we just sat there for what felt like a very long time without anyone coming by to check in or even offer water or anything. Finally, the waitress came over, which is when we also found out that somehow they don't offer regular tap water, only bottled water... like how is that even possible? Anyways, we proceeded to order our dishes and then waited for over 30 minutes only to find out at the dishes we ordered (fried lagman) was not available that day! And they only told us this after having already waited half an hour! You would think they would've known this before... so there we were, trying to order again... finally our food came and as mentioned, thankfully, it was actually very tasty. So all in all, while the service definitely could've used some improvement, the food redeemed the experience in a big way and coupled with the unique cuisine and friendliness of the owner, I am giving Karavan Kebab a solid 4 stars. I think risking the service speed to experience this unique and delicious cuisine is well worth it.

However over the last few years, I've cut back from every couple of weeks to every so often. Their staff has changed over time and the guys that take the orders and make the sandwiches now have become quite rude. Whether its 1 or several customers waiting to be served, the workers just continually walk by and ignore the customers. While waiting in line, you hear the grumbles of the customer's saying this is a consistent behavior of the workers. If other orders were being completed you could understand, but they're not because as the grumbles get louder you finally see the workers walk over to the counter to take orders. What's really annoying is while this happening, the owner/manager (gray hair older man wearing a green shirt) when there, is standing a few feet away either talking on the phone or to someone. Sometimes an annoyed customer either leaves or speaks to him directly for him to get his workers to the counter to take orders. Last couple of times I stopped in, the shop wasn't full as it normally used to be. Maybe the rudeness of the workers have ran the customers away.
