I had dinner at Sofia last night with a party of three and our bill came out to around $400 after tip. Before getting into it, I want to acknowledge that this is a family style concept. That's clearly communicated when you're greeted, so naturally it sets the expectation for shareable portions. We started with the ricotta and meatballs. Overall, portions felt on the smaller side, but the ricotta, especially at $18, was honestly a bit shocking in size. When we asked about it, a server jokingly said "inflation." I get it, but still. The two guys I dined with come here often and were actually the ones pointing out that portions have seemed to shrink. For mains, we each ordered a pasta. One was a server recommended agnolotti with crab, corn, and roe. It was decent, but the broth felt a bit too loose and could've used more depth and richness. That said, the crab portion was generous, the pesto was great, and the red sauce pasta was solid. We also ordered two pizzas, hands down the highlight of the meal. Easily the best thing we had. One small but off putting detail, the red pepper flakes were served in an open jar rather than a shaker. It made me question how many hands had been in it, especially since it appeared to have been reused from another table. Not the most sanitary presentation. Dessert was a strong finish. Panna cotta, tiramisu, and olive oil cake were all fresh and delicious. Drinks included a cocktail for me and beers plus an espresso martini for the table, all fine. Service wise, things started okay but felt rushed toward the end. We even mentioned we were still picking at food and what seemed to be a manager still cleared plates from the table. The tables themselves are also very small, which doesn't help when you're doing family style dining. Our server appeared to be training someone but never introduced them, which made things feel a bit awkward. Also, when resetting silverware, it felt rushed and a little careless, almost tossed onto the table rather than placed. Overall, the experience was good but not great. The food had its highlights, but portion sizes versus price and some service missteps held it back. 6/10, and honestly it reminded me why I hadn't felt the urge to come back before. read more

Sofia was wonderful and we will definitely be back. Getting a reservation was easy, same day. We had to be seated outside on a cold windy evening but it was well worth it. We were the only ones outside during this time. Staff came out often to check on us. Cocktails were fantastic. I had the arabesque and my husband had an old fashioned. Dishes are meant to be shared so they come out as they are prepared. The star of the show was the kale and beet salad. It was perfectly dressed and chopped finely. Simple but fab. We also had the ricotta with focaccia, baked bread, polenta and pesto pasta. The polenta was creamy and rich, unlike a drier firm serving topped with sauce. We were full by the time the pesto pasta came out so we only had half. At that point it was too rich for us. We had a child with us and the server gave us kid friendly options. There are several options although you won't get a dedicated kids menu. My child had the buttered noodles and they were delicious. We will definitely go back next time we visit NOLA. Arriving late into NoLa on a cold Sunday night and my buddy and I wanted to grab a quick dinner but most of the NoLa resturants I had marked were closing at 9pm. Sofia was open til 10pm so we popped in there around 8:30pm. Glad we did, as we were one of the last parties taken as they decided to close a little early. We split a pizza called The Spicy ($24) which was absolutely great. We almost got the marghareta and I wish we would have since the crust and cheese were perfect it really didn't even need any toppings. We wanted a protein so split the short rib pasta ($30) which we were a little less than impressed with. Again, the noodles were excellent but the dish just seemed to be a saucy mess overall. Didn't love the unexpected 4% kitchen appreciation fee on my check but I will say the service was good and I'd come back here regardless. read more

I only gave this place a 4-star review because the pasta was bland for my taste and the complimentary birthday dessert was soooo dry, I could've been eating chalk with icing for less sugar :/ anyways, everything else that hit the table was firrrrreeeee! That shrimp toast is an absolute must! The bread was sooooo soft and delicious! The shrimp was so perfect, and ghe little garnishment on the top was a nice touch. It was great and I will be back for that appetizer specifically! The pizza was also really good! It does have a bunch of crust, but it's soft and not tough like some dough can be. Unfortunately, they pesto pasta was missing something (other than protein lol). It was missing a flavor (other than pesto). I couldn't eat much of it. Also, they gave me a complimentary birthday cake and lit the candle! It was such a nice gesture! I hate to admit it, but that cake wasn't good at all. But hey, it was free! They have ice cream from Creole Creamery on their dessert menu, and you get two scoops. The ice cream, of course, was really good. I've experienced repeatedly horrible customer service with a condescending attitude - details below . . . . I arrived for lunch 20 minutes before their advertised (on the door) 3 PM closing-time (to prepare for dinner) - waiters were still taking orders from tables (some recently seated) - so, I clearly was in time to be seated. After waiting over 5 minutes at the abandoned hostess stand, a lady walked up to me and said that they were still serving, but I would have to sit at the bar, which I said I could not because I needed a chair with a back and noted there were lots of empty tables and, again, waiters were still taking orders from recently seated diners and, according to the clock, they were still open as advertised - I said I knew what I wanted and could order immediately upon being seated or, if needed, right there and then -- she said she'd have to ask the manager about not sitting at the bar and then left. The manager appeared five minutes later (pushing us closer to 3:00 PM through no fault of mine) and told me (before I could utter a word) that the restaurant "was closed to prepare for dinner" (it was still before 3PM mind you) with a wildly condescending smile on her face while wholly avoiding eye contact with me (she was putting up menus) - I told her (actually, mostly to the back of her head) that I was confused because I not only arrived in time as advertised on their door and had waited now for almost 10 minutes, but it was still before 3PM -- I'd been made to wait, waiters were still taking orders, and her employee had just told me they were open - I tried to explain that I could order quickly, but I was told I had to sit at the bar, which I could not do because I needed a chair with a back -- she continued the condescending smile while avoiding eye contact, refused to speak to me, and walked away. I note that this is not the first wildly bad customer-service experience (full of apparent lies) I have had there. The first was over Mardi Gras a couple of months ago. We were seated outside, because we were told nothing was available inside despite seeing a couple of empty tables --- after the third person harrassed us by walking up to our outside table (immediately next to the door mind you) begging for food and/or money, I asked the waiter if it would be okay to sit at one of the empty tables I saw inside. He said he would ask - then, about 20 minutes (and more harrassment) later when he did/had not responded (though having visited the table since), I asked again and was told (after he again asked the same manager), that there were "no tables." Hot on the heels of that obvious lie, two separate sets of diners walked in off of the street and said to the same hostess (within earshot of me) that they "had no reservations" and wanted to be seated and then were seated at the empty tables I'd just requested. I then asked the hostess why we had been refused one of those tables when I indicated that I would gladly pay and tip the waiter outside and then they could just bring the food we had ordered to the new table inside and I also gladly would pay and tip the waiter inside - to avoid being harassed multiple times by people begging for food and money in front of their front door mind you. I got the same condescending smile with no eye contact. So, I will never darken the door of this place again. I suggest you do not either based on my experiences. And, if you do, I hope you are treated better than I was - TWICE. This place has good food, but it's not cheap, and there are lots of places with good food that hopefully will not treat you like they treated me on more than one occasion for simply asking for something not out of the ordinary and apparently available. read more

What a gem of a find! My coworker and I stumbled upon Sofia after reading the positive reviews while we were craving pizza. I'm so glad I found this restaurant as we've come back a couple of times since and it's quickly becoming a local favorite of mine. PRO TIP: When at all possible, make a reservation! If you don't have a reservation, be prepared to wait any day of the week. The atmosphere of Sophia is always busy and bustling without being incredibly overwhelming. My first experience here there were only bar seats available and that was a great experience as well. Went to Sofia's for brunch to celebrate a friend's birthday. Its a cute place with lots of pictures of Sofia Loren on the walls. We started with bottomless mimosas for $20 (or pomegranate for $24). The pours were HUGE, 1 glass is probably equivalent to 2.5-3 flutes. It was 5 of us and we shared 2 pizzas, 2 orders of crispy potatoes and the cacio de pepe. Plenty of food for the 5 of us. I enjoyed everything but the star of the show for me was the potatoes (dove in so quickly didnt get to snap a pic but trust me and get them). The potatoes were crispy and garlicky and just plain delicious. I'd go back solely for the potatoes. I got their version of a hot toddy (a new years specialty) and my girlfriend go their Lavender Haze. The Lavender Haze had an ingredient that was listed as "magic" - they brought out a blue drink in a martini glass, then poured some additional liquid in that turned it bright purple. It was cool to watch. Service: Service was solid but nothing special. We were served reasonably quickly and our waitress was friendly. Value: Prices were quite high for what this is. Single person pizzas were $20-25. Pasta dishes were similar. They were good and fresh, but nowhere near worth that. Strangely enough, the drinks seemed like they might be the best value here - cocktails were $12-14 for unique and interesting drinks. Atmosphere: We sat at the chefs counter. This was a really enjoyable experience. Someone was constantly tossing dough to make a pizza and we had a good view into the kitchen to watch them prepping the pasta dishes. It was basically bar seating but way more entertaining. The only downside was that they insisted on crowding other people right next to us even though there was plenty of space. This was a last minute, get my kids food and let them sit, find and we were super lucky. The environment and ambiance of Sofia was warm and inviting with good music playing at a good volume. The hostess gave us a few options for seating and we opted to sit at the pizza bar so the kids could watch the pizzas get made. Our waitress got to us quickly and set us up with drinks and let us know we could get the kids a three cheese pizza that wasn't on the menu. The staff came up and offered our kids dough to "make their own pizzas". It was a solid move that kept the kids entertained and occupied. It wasn't long after that their pizza came out. We make pizza all the time at home and my kids just sort of nibble on it but they crushed the pizza here. My wife's mule and my old fashioned came out and they were delicious as well.
