Was a very busy night and we walked in for a party of 7. I understand that it's crowded and busy, so we were very patient and respectful. We saw on the menu that checks could not be split, which was fine even though split would be preferable to us. So, when our server told us the check can't be split but she can "take multiple cards" I was a bit confused and asked if she could explain more since that's what we might do, since she said it was possible. Already there she gave attitude and said I don't know how else to explain it to you in a rude tone. After we finished our food, we asked her to take multiple cards for the check and she told us to write on the back what to charge each card. I apologize that I did misunderstand what she meant, and put the items rather than the exact amount to charge each card. She came back and said, "you did exactly what I said not to do." So I said sorry and was in the midst of redoing it by calculating when she just snatched it from me and said she'll just do it. I had no problem doing it nor did we complain even once. After a while, understandably, she came back and basically scolded us, saying what if she was busy she wouldn't have been able to do this....but she said she could do it in the first place! We understood from the get go no split checks but then she gave the option of multiple cards so obviously we took it. The food was good and the ambience was nice. I enjoyed the open kitchen concept and seeing the pizza oven. But the service ruined it for me. I work the food industry and would have never acted this way. I had dinner at Sofia last night with a party of three and our bill came out to around $400 after tip. Before getting into it, I want to acknowledge that this is a family style concept. That's clearly communicated when you're greeted, so naturally it sets the expectation for shareable portions. We started with the ricotta and meatballs. Overall, portions felt on the smaller side, but the ricotta, especially at $18, was honestly a bit shocking in size. When we asked about it, a server jokingly said "inflation." I get it, but still. The two guys I dined with come here often and were actually the ones pointing out that portions have seemed to shrink. For mains, we each ordered a pasta. One was a server recommended agnolotti with crab, corn, and roe. It was decent, but the broth felt a bit too loose and could've used more depth and richness. That said, the crab portion was generous, the pesto was great, and the red sauce pasta was solid. We also ordered two pizzas, hands down the highlight of the meal. Easily the best thing we had. One small but off putting detail, the red pepper flakes were served in an open jar rather than a shaker. It made me question how many hands had been in it, especially since it appeared to have been reused from another table. Not the most sanitary presentation. Dessert was a strong finish. Panna cotta, tiramisu, and olive oil cake were all fresh and delicious. Drinks included a cocktail for me and beers plus an espresso martini for the table, all fine. Service wise, things started okay but felt rushed toward the end. We even mentioned we were still picking at food and what seemed to be a manager still cleared plates from the table. The tables themselves are also very small, which doesn't help when you're doing family style dining. Our server appeared to be training someone but never introduced them, which made things feel a bit awkward. Also, when resetting silverware, it felt rushed and a little careless, almost tossed onto the table rather than placed. Overall, the experience was good but not great. The food had its highlights, but portion sizes versus price and some service missteps held it back. 6/10, and honestly it reminded me why I hadn't felt the urge to come back before. read more

Arriving late into NoLa on a cold Sunday night and my buddy and I wanted to grab a quick dinner but most of the NoLa resturants I had marked were closing at 9pm. Sofia was open til 10pm so we popped in there around 8:30pm. Glad we did, as we were one of the last parties taken as they decided to close a little early. We split a pizza called The Spicy ($24) which was absolutely great. We almost got the marghareta and I wish we would have since the crust and cheese were perfect it really didn't even need any toppings. We wanted a protein so split the short rib pasta ($30) which we were a little less than impressed with. Again, the noodles were excellent but the dish just seemed to be a saucy mess overall. Didn't love the unexpected 4% kitchen appreciation fee on my check but I will say the service was good and I'd come back here regardless. read more

Sofia was wonderful and we will definitely be back. Getting a reservation was easy, same day. We had to be seated outside on a cold windy evening but it was well worth it. We were the only ones outside during this time. Staff came out often to check on us. Cocktails were fantastic. I had the arabesque and my husband had an old fashioned. Dishes are meant to be shared so they come out as they are prepared. The star of the show was the kale and beet salad. It was perfectly dressed and chopped finely. Simple but fab. We also had the ricotta with focaccia, baked bread, polenta and pesto pasta. The polenta was creamy and rich, unlike a drier firm serving topped with sauce. We were full by the time the pesto pasta came out so we only had half. At that point it was too rich for us. We had a child with us and the server gave us kid friendly options. There are several options although you won't get a dedicated kids menu. My child had the buttered noodles and they were delicious. We will definitely go back next time we visit NOLA. I only gave this place a 4-star review because the pasta was bland for my taste and the complimentary birthday dessert was soooo dry, I could've been eating chalk with icing for less sugar :/ anyways, everything else that hit the table was firrrrreeeee! That shrimp toast is an absolute must! The bread was sooooo soft and delicious! The shrimp was so perfect, and ghe little garnishment on the top was a nice touch. It was great and I will be back for that appetizer specifically! The pizza was also really good! It does have a bunch of crust, but it's soft and not tough like some dough can be. Unfortunately, they pesto pasta was missing something (other than protein lol). It was missing a flavor (other than pesto). I couldn't eat much of it. Also, they gave me a complimentary birthday cake and lit the candle! It was such a nice gesture! I hate to admit it, but that cake wasn't good at all. But hey, it was free! They have ice cream from Creole Creamery on their dessert menu, and you get two scoops. The ice cream, of course, was really good. As for decor, this place is a beautiful spot to celebrate any occasion or to have a nice dinner. I'll definitely be back! Especially because they waiter was super attentive and friendly! A very delicious Italian restaurant! There is nothing but perfection at this restaurant. Sitting at the bar was great as we could see the chef preparing the food and watching the pizza come out of the oven. What a well oiled machine this place is. Their food was fresh, hot, and tasted absolutely spectacular. Their pizza is to die for. The alla vodka was flavorful, spicy, and just had the right amount of heat. Their kale and beet salad was so good, I think it was the best salad I have eaten at an Italian restaurant. The service staff was extremely friendly and very attentive. We were happy with our overall experience here. We also had a couple glasses of wine that were excellent. Definitely recommend this restaurant if you're looking for good quality, Italian food. Sophia's was by FAR my favorite restaurant in my trip to New Orleans. It's a nice break from the classic creole foods! We ordered 3 dishes for 2 and still had some left overs! Ambiance and decor are great especially with the large pizza oven in the corner! What we ordered: - Margarita Pizza (5/5) - a thin crust simple but well done pizza! It was great but just not a stand out compared to the other items. - Kale Beet Salad (6/5) - INSANELY GOOD salad oh my goodness!! I don't even love beets but I think I do now? The kale was soft, shredded well, cheese was shaved thin and beets were soft. The apple dressing was also DELICIOUS! Highly recommend. - Pesto Pasta (6/5) - ALSO DELICIOUS! Note that it's walking distance from the convention center on a street with cool establishments to peek in to on the way. The food was good, I would recommend the Bianca pizza. The touch of rosemary is outstanding and definitely makes the pizza. All the other was good was just okay to me. I'm so glad I found this restaurant as we've come back a couple of times since and it's quickly becoming a local favorite of mine. PRO TIP: When at all possible, make a reservation! Went to Sofia's for brunch to celebrate a friend's birthday. Its a cute place with lots of pictures of Sofia Loren on the walls. We started with bottomless mimosas for $20 (or pomegranate for $24). The pours were HUGE, 1 glass is probably equivalent to 2.5-3 flutes. It was 5 of us and we shared 2 pizzas, 2 orders of crispy potatoes and the cacio de pepe. Plenty of food for the 5 of us. I enjoyed everything but the star of the show for me was the potatoes (dove in so quickly didnt get to snap a pic but trust me and get them). The potatoes were crispy and garlicky and just plain delicious. I'd go back solely for the potatoes. Overall: This restaurant is a solid pasta/pizza place masquerading as an upscale Italian restaurant. The food and drinks were good, the drinks especially so. The chefs counter was a fun place to sit. But overall, its just way overpriced for what it is. If prices were 20-30% lower I'd easily bump this rating up, but its just too pricey for what it is. The ricotta was just alright - pretty standard cheese spread on some toasted bread. The pesto had pistachios in it instead of the standard pine nuts, which I thought was interesting but overall not an improvement. Pizza was probably the best dish we had - it was very fresh with great crust and some interesting toppings. Drinks: Our drinks were really fun. I got their version of a hot toddy (a new years specialty) and my girlfriend go their Lavender Haze. The Lavender Haze had an ingredient that was listed as "magic" - they brought out a blue drink in a martini glass, then poured some additional liquid in that turned it bright purple. It was cool to watch. Service: Service was solid but nothing special. We were served reasonably quickly and our waitress was friendly. Value: Prices were quite high for what this is. Single person pizzas were $20-25. Pasta dishes were similar. They were good and fresh, but nowhere near worth that. Strangely enough, the drinks seemed like they might be the best value here - cocktails were $12-14 for unique and interesting drinks. Atmosphere: We sat at the chefs counter. This was a really enjoyable experience. Someone was constantly tossing dough to make a pizza and we had a good view into the kitchen to watch them prepping the pasta dishes. It was basically bar seating but way more entertaining. The only downside was that they insisted on crowding other people right next to us even though there was plenty of space. There were ever only two parties at the chefs counter (with space for ~12 people) and they always sat people right next to us to make it crowded. read more

This was a last minute, get my kids food and let them sit, find and we were super lucky. The environment and ambiance of Sofia was warm and inviting with good music playing at a good volume. The hostess gave us a few options for seating and we opted to sit at the pizza bar so the kids could watch the pizzas get made. Our waitress got to us quickly and set us up with drinks and let us know we could get the kids a three cheese pizza that wasn't on the menu. The staff came up and offered our kids dough to "make their own pizzas". It was a solid move that kept the kids entertained and occupied. It wasn't long after that their pizza came out. We make pizza all the time at home and my kids just sort of nibble on it but they crushed the pizza here. My wife's mule and my old fashioned came out and they were delicious as well.
