Such a delicious meal for a girls' night out! We had an amazing waiter, and the ambiance is exactly what you'd hope for in the Quarter. We started with bottles of wine and sparkly beverages, not to mention the bruschetta and garlic cheesy bread. The only sad part about the cheesy garlic bread is that I wish there was more! We then moved on to chicken parmesans and some other fabulous pasta dish that I don't remember (again, bottles of wines). From there, we were easily convinced to do dessert - chocolate cake, cheesecake, and limoncello cake! Again, you would not have heard one complaint for our table (except maybe being too full??)! Spare yourself the disappointment and pass on Mona Lisa. I'm a server in New Orleans and have been in the hospitality industry my whole life - so trust me when I say that this place is a joke. I eat just about anything. I don't shy away from Taco Bell, or even gas station food but I also frequent high end restaurants. I'd rather eat McDonald's over Mona Lisa. The only decent aspect of my meal was the decor in the restaurant. Even the server was short and cold. The food at Mona Lisa is all low quality frozen stuff that they buy from restaurant depot. It was all bland and boring. I would say that at-best the food is mediocre but edible. It feels to me like an elevated Cici's pizza in there. Being in a city that's known for having amazing food and great restaurants - do yourself a favor and pick literally any other restaurant over this place. There's no shortage of amazing Italian restaurants - Irene's, Paladar 511, Pulcinella!, and Giana are just a few other options. The walls are lines with various rendition of da Vinci's iconic portrait, which adds to the charm. The red & white checkered tablecloths are lines with butcher paper and crayons are provided so you can create your own masterpiece. The locals love this place so much that they recently rallied together and saved the restaurant from being closed after the owner received a text message to vacate in 60 days. I dined here years ago and loved it. I often recommend it to others. It's also a favorite of my "brother" and he insisted we come here during our last visit. Our server Lindsey was darling. In fact, everyone here is friendly. We started with the Cheesy Bread, which is a must! Brother had the Authentico (Linguini tossed in olive oil with fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic, kalamata olives, & capers). My other "brother" and I ordered the Shrimp Fra Diavolo to share, which was linguini tossed with shrimp sauteed in brandy with a Creole marinara. It was so good I wanted to lick the plate. We came in on Sat night, a 30min wait for 3 ppl. They took our number and called when our table was ready. I've seen this restaurant over the years and when my sister felt like Italian food for dinner, this place came up in my search. The man that sat us was hilarious, he was really funny dealing with other diners that he knew. Anyway, we liked our server, who seemed to be waiting on all of the tables in this room. I ordered chicken picata, which was good, my boyfriend ordered pasta ala Nonna, which was mostly sauce, not much pasta. My sister got shrimp scampi, she didn't like it much. All of our dishes were not hot. We assumed that they people that ordered after us, all got their food before us l, so we think our food sat there for a while. The server said he was sorry for not bringing our appetizer which was bruschetta, it was the strangest bruschetta ever. Cold thick chunky sauce, laced with balsamic vinegar. December 9th 2024 went to Mona Lisa restaurant around the corner from our timeshare in New Orleans. Hole in the wall restaurant decorated in red and white colors everywhere stressing is Italian heritage. Lot of single locals eating pizza I had the Mardi gras pasta served with shrimp and sausage in a spicy Creole marinara sauce. wife didn't care for spicy sauce but I'm writing the review and loved it. relatively inexpensive for New Orleans. wife had the $18 spinach lasagna which she loved but I could do without. One of those few restaurants where wife and I were definitely not switching dishes. One of the least expensive meals and good value for New Orleans. My family ate here 25 years ago. I remember it was a long walk but the atmosphere and food were both wonderful. We were excited to be able to eat here again on our first night in New Orleans this coming Friday April 3. Sadly, after reading a few Yelp reviews we had to change our plans. It looks like hate and rudeness live here now, particularily by the front door. I'm re-posting a couple of photos fron 10/19/25 showing signs posted in their front window. Was visiting NOLA from Boston and craving Italian. Mona Lisa gets great food reviews on Yelp and we were told by local residents how great it was. We waited in line about 40 minutes in anticipation. We were warned the host/owner could be salty, but I thought he was just a character dealing with crazy patrons, many of whom arrived intoxicated after the Saints game. #IYKYK. Anyhoo, the vibe is great--love the interior, though dimly lit (dark photos). The food is fresh and homemade. But Italian is regional and I wasn't a super fan of the style overall. It was good. The bruschetta was atypical: thin slices of toasted bread served with a cooked tomato compote of sorts. Very flavorful but unexpected from the fresh diced tomatoes I was hoping for. My friend had the chicken parm. She did not care for the chunky-style tomato sauce. I tasted the chicken which was spot-on. I had the Bolognese, which was more of spaghetti tossed in ground meat. I yearned for more red sauce. It was tasty, but needed a saucy coating. The star of the show was the panna cotta with delicious berry compote. The pizza looked good. There is Mona Lisa decor everywhere whether it's mockery, something hand drawn, or history related. You are also able to draw on the table with crayons for amusement. Server was watching assisting multiple table but quite friendly and informative and checked up on us multiple times. Mainly Italian food but it was fresh, generous portions, reasonable pricing, and darn right tasty! We always start with a bottle of wine, great selection and not all too over the top expensive. We have worked our way down the menu and have enjoyed every dish. On our latest visit we each had a side salad and split a small pizza which was plenty for two. Side salads are simple but come with a yummy slice of cheese pizza. The pizza has a delicious crust and toppings, just enough cheese and great tasty sauce. If you order too much it reheats really well the next day which I can't say the same for all pizza. The only tricky part is that the wait is fairly unpredictable. Mama mia! This little mom and pop place is all that and then some! We were craving Italian food while visiting New Orleans and stumbled upon this hidden gem. The inside is quaint and quiet, it's like visiting your grandmas house at the holidays.. light chatter buzzing around you but nothing loud or intrusive. Our waitress was fantastic and took great care of us, we ended up ordering a pizza and pasta, both of which were absolutely fantastic and tasted home-cooked ! I love that they have the paper tablecloth on the table for you to draw on, it brings back nostalgic memories of being a kid for me and my husband and I had a fun time drawing and playing tic-tac-toe. We were in town for a week and found this place about halfway through our stay and wished we found it sooner. As it was we ate there twice. We were staying in the French Quarter so it was walking distance but was in a quiet area and seemed like at least a few locals were regulars. The inside is small so you might have to wait a bit depending on the day/time (we didn't wait at all the first day and waited 25 minutes the second time) but it's well worth it.
