There has been so many Korean Fried Chicken places popping up and then popping out of Hong Kong again the past few years, I'll bet you could eat at a different KFC place every meal for two weeks and you still would only be in the Causeway Bay area.
With quantity comes diversity, and then differentiation. Sodam Chicken is a quiet upstairs place near Times Square that differentiates itself by offering a plethora of creative Korean Fried Chicken flavors, and BAKED chicken. Karen L has covered the baked options which I deem worthy of a try, so I will cover fried chicken (I am ironically loyal to fried foods that will clog my arteries anyway).
The selection is huge, BBQ Spicy, Garlic, Vanilla and on and on...The three of us ordered the Double Cheese Fried Chicken (HKD 158) and the Sweet and Sour Fried Chicken (HKD 158). These were lunch sets which included one drink per order, and both dishes came in portions of 10 pieces, so unless you have an enormous appetite or are a greedy bastard, it is better to share. They did a good job of battering and frying the morsels, because it was very crunchy and audibly loud between your jaws. It was the type of batter that would break off but you would still want to pick up and eat. The flavors were creative but not that outstanding, Sweet and Sour was standard sauce that was just lightly covering the chicken, and the double cheese was essentially just two types of cheese powders sprinkled on top, which was good to look at but was barely noticeable in flavor. The chicken was more lean than I'm used to in fried chicken, so there was a strange crunch-and-chew experience for me.
It's definitely not bad, but not high on my scale either. One thing I must say is that the portions are very generous, and Sodam Chicken got me feeling Sodam full very quickly.
Forgoing the Baked Chicken and creative menu options, I actually would opt for some other places that have less creative but more solid Korean Fried Chicken options, such as Moyo, Lee's or even Chom Chom Mi, which is not a specialised KFC place but does a spectacular version of it.
Sodam has 3 Stars in my mind, but an extra star for the low prices and the baked chicken option that might help ease your guilt and keep the doctor away for another day. read more
