Walk along Mei Tin Road just opposite the Tai Wai MTR station. Pass by Hot Star Large Fried Chicken…read morewithout salivating as the beautiful scent of freshly fried chicken wafts through the air. Go on, I dare you. Can't do it? It's okay. Neither can I. Hot Star serves probably the best street-side fried chicken you can find. Originating from Taiwan, the chicken here is fried to delicious perfection, and the meat is nice and tender. There is permanently a line forming outside Hot Star - be it two people or ten. Not surprising, because the chicken here is so, so good! It's served piping hot and it smells amazing - every bite is simply heavenly. I've actually only tried two things on the menu - the signature large fried chicken, and the 'heung heung gai', the second item on the menu, which translates roughly and very aptly to 'delicious delicious chicken'. The large fried chicken, as the name suggests, is pretty large. It's basically a big piece of chicken. The chicken meat is juicy and very nicely fried. Even though it was soaked in oil, for some reason, it doesn't taste that oily to me. I've had fried chicken where I feel like I'm eating mouthfuls of oil, but it isn't the case with this one. I would definitely recommend getting the second item on the menu, the 'heung heung gai', it you're sharing with friends. It tastes exactly like the large fried chicken, except the chicken is in small, bite-sized pieces - perfect for sharing. The portion is decent enough to be eaten among three people, I would say. I don't normally like street food in HK, but this is an exception. Yes, it's fried, unhealthy, and loaded with MSG, but hey, there's no harm in having it once in a while. In sum, this is no doubt a guilty pleasure of mine. Try it, and I'm sure it'll soon be yours too!

It looked more like a take out kind of place but we saw tables in the back and started to enter the shop, but the floor was so greasy, we were seriously thinking about making a 180° and skip this place. I don't know if it was the look on our faces or that we were a bit better dressed then the uncles in their white tanks with legs propped up on stools or what, but the kind lady proprietor suggested we eat at their "nicer atmosphere" dining room a few doors down. The dining room greeted us with nice A/C and floors our shoes had better grip on. The food is ordered here and they will prepare the soup, noodles, drinks, etc. but all the siu mei still comes over from the other shop. The roasted meats we're tender and tasty, no lie. I'd say even skip all those starchy fillers and go straight for the roasted proteins. The portions here are very generous and we felt a little guilty leaving some pieces uneaten. Hong Kong definitely has no shortage of siu me shops and I'm glad the tasties they offer remain classic and unchanged. Looking forward to finding new gems.

So nice to be able to sample treats that met our dietary restrictions, i.e. no pork, no shellfish. Loved the large selection of vegetarian options. Our friends enjoyed their dumplings. Add some cold Hong Kong Milk Tea for a perfect snack while exploring the markets around Mong Kok.

The goose is roasted to a golden color. You can order it whole, or half, or a quarter. It literally melts in your mouth and the meat is very tender and juicy; I'm sure you'd want to reach for another piece before you finish the one. If you are adventurous enough, try their goose intestines with soy sauce. I know it sounds gross but try it with open mind and you'll be surprised. There're many other traditional Cantonese dishes and just order away because it's very affordable and tasty.

The staff is very rushed with the volume of customers to the degree of being rude. The staff is very gossipy and will talk of customers that they feel not understand in the area. They will also rush you out once you put down your chopsticks to get the next round of customers in... definitely not a relaxing environment for a family meal or date night. The area has the nostalgic feel as there has been very little renovations to update the feel. The seating is spacious but does fill up quickly with the volumes of tourists looking to sample their goods. We ordered a few dishes but the main star - Roast goose fell flat on its face. The goose was DRY and very tough (read - chewy). There was very little taste even with the generous duck Au jus on the plate. The Korito, for which it's famous, was first created in 2011 & packed as a school lunch for the owners 6 year old daughter. K-Roll now offer a great range of rolls including chicken, beef, shrimp & tofu, each featuring a selection of sauces to tailor each roll to your taste. I can't rave about this place enough & now with multiple locations throughout Hong Kong, K-Roll makes for a super convenient option for lunch on the run. I'm hungry just thinking about it!

You are dealing with not just Office ladies in high heels but handsome guys in suits. Like for real. K-Roll is one of the examples. It has one in Sheung Wan but I was pretty glad to hear that now they have one more branch in Central at the Central station. Honestly I am such a noob when it comes to Korean food, I always thought that Korean food is either kimchi or Korean Barbeque. That's it. Turns out there's much more. Over here you can order bite-sized kimbap rolls (basically a sushi roll without the raw fish), Korean burritos. They look a lot like Japanese rolls at first glance but the ingredients are mainly cooked like rice, tempura shrimp, fried dumpling skin, veggies, etc. They certainly bring out the Korean flavor with the special Korean sauce as well. To me, this place not only offers delicious food but all the food are very colourful and pleasing to the eyes. I understand that it is also very packed during lunch hour but guess what? At least you are waiting for your orders at a place with air conditioning.

Sham Tseng Chan Kee is a roasted goose specialist. It is located in vibrant Mong Kok. The thing I…read morelearned in Hong Kong is that roast goose is favored over roast duck which is the complete opposite in the U.S. I have never seen a Chinese restaurant anywhere in North America that offers roasted goose. Not even in Vancouver or Richmond. The restaurant it is not full of glamour. This feels like a typical neighborhood restaurant. Like a cha chaan teng as it is very diner-esque. Just simple Chinese fare. I decided to get a Chinese BBQ combo which consisted of roast goose, Chinese sausage, Hainan chicken, salted duck egg and Chinese broccoli with rice. The two items that stood out were the roast goose and Chinese sausage. The roast goose tastes very similar to roast duck, though has a bit more richness. This explains why it is the preferred choice in HK. The Chinese sausage on the other hand was quite lean compared to the Chinese sausages I am accustomed to. If you want to try roast goose, Sham Tseng Chan Kee is a good place to give it a try. Though if you are particular about ambiance, then you might want to go elsewhere. This is a hole in the wall sort of restaurant.

It's a surprisingly large and open wooden space, which is refreshing after bumping knees and getting breathed on by strangers all day, every day. Your first step inside is greeted with TV screens playing Kpop and the smell of sizzle and sauce; it's a Korean fried haven. Goobne specializes in, you guessed it, Korean fried chicken, but with a heavy infusion of Western bar food. They've got salads, pastas, Asian style rice rolls, and a variety of fancy margaritas (one with a shark). Mostly though, you're here for the chicken. On my initial visit, my friend and I shared: Appletiser: Some foreign apple sparkly with a punny name. It's what you expect. Fizzy apple juice in a bottle. Overpriced because of its foreignness and because it's in a bottle. Caesar Salad: This is not a Caesar salad. Caesar sauce (in a cup on the side, no less) with some veggies, croutons, and parmesan does not a Caesar make. Who adds frisee to a Caesar? Or red cabbage? OR TOMATOES AND CUCUMBERS? It's fine for a salad. Just know that you are not ordering a Caesar when you order this Caesar. Rice Crunch Chicken Boneless: Yes, this is where it's at! A well-portioned amount of crispy boneless chicken covered in sweet and spicy sauce, carried out in a cast iron pan. To make it better, tiny rice bits cover the chicken for extra crunch. To make it EVEN better, pieces of sauce-soaked Korean rice cakes are mixed in. SO. GOOD. Strawberry Milk Snow: I don't know what I was expecting for this. Something more like shaved ice? Nope. Milk snow is exactly what it is: creamy crystals that melted on impact. It was incredibly unique and the right amount of sweet with the ice cream and strawberries mixed in. 10/10, will choke on ice particles again. Goobne Chicken is goodne chicken. There, I said it. Though my puns are bad, Goobne isn't. And with this being one of several locations in HK, you can always get your fried chicken on. Whether you're in the mood to hang out, or to grab a sharkarita, or just to get some good grub, Goobne is one great choice in the city with way too many food choices. (52/100) - 100
