La Rotisserie - Take away French chicken

Why would I get French food in Hong Kong? It just really didn't make sense to me at first. Well,…read moreI've been back more times than I can remember and I've gone through a few of their stamp cards to get free quiche or chocolate cake so I guess my question was moot. While the chicken is good and getting the meal is a quick and relatively healthy swap for when I don't feel like cooking. I'm a big fan of their baguettes, the chicken sandwich that comes on the baguette as well as just buying a couple of loaves if I feel like splurging on eating carbs. The sandwich is a tasty well prepared little thing-it kind of reminds me of the mini subs that Blimpy's used to have but packed with a a lot of chicken and veggies. The potatoes are also a favorite side dish of mine but a few people have said it's a little too greasy because it's cooked in chicken juice. The only real complaint I have is that the servings are usually pretty small-like most places in HK. I end up buying the dinner for four deal for two people.

Amidst the noodles and the dim sum is this tiny takeaway place that serves...French roast chicken??…read moreI don't know what makes this place so French, other than the fact it's run by a French guy. We have roast chicken back in Canada too. But damn, it was good chicken and the sides were delish! No Swiss Chalet baby chicken and bland veggies here. It's becoming clearer to me that HK isn't the cheap food haven as I was led to believe. Still, La Rotisserie is rather reasonable. On the weekends, 1/4 chicken + 2 sides is priced at HKD $86 (CAD $15). Weekday lunch sets include 1/4 chicken + 1 side + drink for HKD $68 (CAD $12). They also take Octopus. I was kinda surprised at the price discrepancy between locations though. I recently moved so this Sai Ying Pun La Rotisserie isn't very accessible to me anymore. I'm still close to Wan Chai, but that one bumps its lunch special price to HKD $78. I know that area is a work-centric, rich expat-filled area, but I'm an expat on a budget!!! Every dollar counts! Regardless, it was still really, really good chicken. It was moist, the roasting was flavourful, and the portion was very reasonable. They also topped the chicken with a drizzle of chicken gravy and a sprinkling of fresh ground pepper. You got to choose between chicken breast or leg and they had 3 side dish options. For my two sides, I picked roasted potatoes and roasted vegetables (the last was some sort of couscous thing). The veggies were great and were a mixture of sweet carrots, broccoli, and squash. The potatoes were nicely cooked and even better when soaked in the chicken gravy. For a Hong Konger who grew up in the West and is craving a bit of the West in Hong Kong, La Rotisserie fulfills that craving with amazing chicken. The Sai Ying Pun location is mainly a takeaway store with a couple of bar stools, so don't expect a comfortable dine-in experience. As with most shops, it's completely open on one side onto the street, which really maximizes its impact. The whole store is practically spilling its seductive aroma and hitting everyone within a 5 meter radius. It's like crack to an addict and La Rotisserie is the best dealer around. (28/100) - 2017

Has seats by open window area that face that water Vibe: mostly Jason Mraz music. calm Food: -Mushrooms - good seasoning of herbs, but not salty enough -Mashed potatoes - good flavor, but too much butter -Ratatouille - quite simple in flavor, needs more substance in seasoning or flavoring -Ginger beer - too sweet and not enough ginger flavor or carbonation -Fish and chips (2) - Seabream and Monkfish, Both fish were well-fried with good flavor. Personally preferred the monkfish as it was a more unique flavor. The chips were good. Larger cut fries -Mixed basket: Oysters, crabcakes and calamari I had were quite good. Didn't try the baby fish in the basket. Overall, the entrees were better than the appetizers. Price per person for 4 people: $200 I'd return for the entrees, but reconsider the appetizer choices.

Before I became vegetarian I loved their chicken. It's a juicy rotisserie roast with crispy skin. Signature fish and chips are also delicious. Now, this is food I would eat back home! My favorite things to get: the sweet corn (sweet buttery corn), mashed potatoes, chicken consomme. Go during lunch for cheaper lunch sets. I believe this is the original location. Its got a beautiful view on a sunny day. Kennedy Town is one of the most underrated neighborhoods on the island. It's relatively quiet, getting more gentrified, and full of hipster Western restaurants. Restaurant is right up against the water. Dog friendly!

Ok, I had to write a separate review for this because it is amazing and I have had it 3x already…read more It is the glorious Baked Pork Chop Rice at Cafe de Coral, and it has unseated the curry dishes to become my favourite dish here. First off, we must start off with the pork chop. It spans nearly the entire dish, and best of all, the bone only comprises a small portion of it! One of my annoyances when eating any protein with bone in it is when it lacks the protein itself--it feels like you've been ripped off. Cafe de Coral does not skimp though, no siree. This pork chop is not only massive, it is also juicy and succulent. On all three occasions, I have had enough pork chop to accompany my spoonfuls of rice from beginning to end. Next, let's turn to the sauce. The tomato-based sauce is on the sweeter side (but not sickly, and this is coming from a savoury-toothed person), and is thickened with a layer of melted cheese and generous portions of tomatoes, pineapples, and peas. Now, I normally prefer to have my tomatoes diced or thinly sliced, but the tomatoes here are roasted enough that they are soft to the touch, oozing out their sweet centres. Of course, you can't have Baked Pork Chop Rice without the rice, and I'm happy to report that the rice here is well-portioned to the sauce and ingredients given. I believe the rice has been lightly fried as well, which is a nice touch in addition to being baked. To wash down this food coma inducing meal, I must again recommend ordering an Iced Hong Kong Style Milk Tea. Although a drink is not included with this meal, it's hard to go wrong for an extra $10. Be warned though, the caffeine and sugar in it is unlikely to prevent you from dozing off later (or, at the very least, from feeling this heavy meal begin to digest in your stomach)...
