Food was pretty good, the service was not the best. Definitely didn't feel welcomed. For being so pricy the customer service should be key.

At this point it is clear that we like breakfast and brunch places and we needed to try the recently opened Smothered. The place is spacious and very retro; cozy, even, with plenty of natural light. Our server was very friendly although it started slow. Once we ordered our food, though, we had our appetizers in a few minutes, and the entrees came to our table shortly after. Our appetizers were the bacon flight and the biscuits. The flight had 6 strips of bacon with different sauces and one battered strip. All of them were interesting. You could definitely pick your favorite and you wouldn't be wrong. The biscuits were buttery and more dense than a normal biscuit, but they were good with the jam and the red chile honey butter. For our entrees, we had the smothered chicken and waffles. The chicken was thick, juicy, and perfectly breaded. The waffles were soft and fluffy. The salsa verde was acidic, but not spicy. The kale is definitely not needed. And please give me more of that red chile butter! We will definitely return to try more dishes... those chilaquiles may be a great option for a second visit. read more

I visited Smothered twice during their soft open and really enjoyed it. The biscuits and gravy and omelet are both delicious, and the Piñon Jay and Breakfast Mai Tai cocktails are also tasty. The service on both visits was very friendly and efficient. It can get a bit noisy inside because of the tiled wall and industrial ceiling but the outdoor section is quieter and charming. read more

Smothered is a new brunch on Central. When I first walked in l, I thought this is gonna be a fun spot! Since it's a new spot, it's pretty crowded. The wait was 45 minutes. Cocktails made the wait a pleasant experience: Bellinis, Mai Tais, and Bloody Maries amongst friends made the time pass quick. We started our meal with the Bacon Flight. We devoured that before I remembered to take a picture. I only have a picture of the aftermath. I had the smothered biscuits and gravy. The biscuit was flaky and buttery, perfect! The biscuit was smothered in a chorizo gravy. One friend had the smothered veggie hash, another the avocado toast, and we shared smothered duck tostada. We all enjoyed our food. Only a couple of things that could have been better: I asked for an over easy egg, as did my friend. We found over medium fried eggs on our plates. Like I said, a small thing. I was excited to try Smothered but I won't be coming back. The food was not very good. We got the smothered breakfast hash and it had no flavor what so ever. We also got the waffle and it came out basically room temp so the butter couldn't even melt. The service was lacking. I asked for a coffee and we had to ask a second time for cream and sugar but no spoon and no salt and pepper were readily available. It did look cool so there's that and the patio was nice. The price was pretty steep too. read more

We had a great meal at Smothered. The service was outstanding. The ambiance fantastic. The portions large-enough to take some home. The Carne Adovado Smash Bowl was outstanding, as was the Gravy Smash Bowl and the Churro Waffle with Ice Cream was the bomb according to those around us. My only real concern is that I think they need to create a better biscuit, it's dry, not flakey and seems reheated. As breakfast spots go in ABQ, this is a good one and we will be back. read more

While I very much enjoyed the ambiance, I give the food and service a 2.5. we waited too long for "breakfast..." IMO, waiting longer than 20 minutes is excessive, especially if the restaurant is half full. After 35 min our food finally came out. I ordered the smothered scramble, and it was missing half of the ingredients.... It did not have onions, peppers, cheese, or cilantro. I spoke to an employee about it, and he confirmed it was supposed to have those ingredients... Then said he saw it sitting there and thought it looked like, but didn't mention anything to the kitchen... Which I thought was very strange? They offer to remake it, but I declined because I didn't want to wait another 30 plus minutes. My hubby ordered the smothered burrito and he enjoyed it. We went to Smothered on 10/11 around 11:45. The restaurant was not full by any means and our party of 3 was immediately seated. After we were seated, we waited almost 10 minutes before our server appeared. We were ready to order as we had ample time to look at the menu before she came to our table. She asked if we wanted the biscuits or bacon flight for the table. We politely declined and told her we were ready to order our meal. She kept pushing the bacon flight. We reiterated we did not want an appetizer and we're ready to order. We placed our order. She returned with our drinks then disappeared. We did not see her for about 25-30 minutes. No one came to the table to offer refills or even check on us. She then popped up about a half an hour later and asked if we were waiting for a bacon flight. I told her no we were waiting for our meal. She said she thought we were waiting for biscuits or the bacon flight. I repeated we were waiting on our meal. She said she knew she put our order in "a while ago." A while ago? Really? She couldn't even remember what we were waiting on. I think our order was forgotten or lost in my opinion. We did not wait around to find out. We got up and left. Here's the deal...I can deal with slow service, forgotten items, etc., but you have to COMMUNICATE. Communication goes a long way to forgive these types of things. But we were ignored for over 30 minutes. Not a single person checked on us. I'd love to tell you about the food but we never got our order. If you decide to go to Smothered, I hope your experience is better. 0/10 we will never return. read more

Lovely environment, "make at home" level of food and above average prices. The environment was very relaxing and aesthetic. With the spacing of seats apart and the option to enjoy in or outside dining, its a very nice spot to eat in the spring. The food was very disappointing especially after seeing it all over social media. Similar to another review, we had ordered the breakfast hash, and to our surprise, no eggs or cheese. We tracked down our server and brought it to his attention. He was very polite about it and took it off our ticket but unfortunately the kitchen only made the eggs, instead of remaking the entire plate. I was forced to eat cold potatoes with plain eggs that came out 10 minutes later. So, my $16 plate was very unenjoyable. The location definitely has potential, and you can see their vision. Overall the kitchen needs refining and the servers need more urgency as this place is "up and coming." read more

Walked in at opening (8am) and right off the bat an employee greeted us but when I tried to greet back I pick my head up and everyone has got their nose in there phone so I had no idea who to respond to. We got to pick our seat because it was just us when we walked in. We ordered water and a vanilla SF latte w/ whole milk. The latte was amazing! The foam was perfect! I ordered the chicken and biscuit sandwich and my wife got the biscuits n gravy. This food was not very good. My sandwich had some chorizo gravy that was separated and extremely salty! My wife also complained of the salty and greasiness of this separated gravy. What that salty and separate gravy tells me is that this was most likely reheated. The chicken also confirmed by its over cooked almost burnt breading that this food was from the day before. The "new" potatoes were very peppery and my wife described them as Rez potatoes she liked them but I'm not a fan of skin on potatoes. The place was empty accept for us, a nearby table, and the flies that were buzzing around being a nuisance while we ate. We waited quite a while for our tab in a mostly empty restaurant which was a bit bothersome. The xtra star is solely for the Vanilla latte. That thing was Amazing! read more

My husband and I went to Smothered recently and it was great! We had good service and I really enjoyed the ambiance of the space. I ordered the basic two egg breakfast and I loved the turkey sausage, the biscuits were top notch and while their kale salad looked basic, it was really flavorful and tasty. The only thing I was disappointed about was the green chile sauce I ordered on the side. It was not a traditional New Mexican green chile sauce; it tasted way too much of cumin. I reviewed the menu before sitting at a table as a first-time-visitor. I saw something that I thought I'd be interested in trying. It was a potato and scrambled egg dish with red and/green chile on top. I noticed the restaurant is a large open space type setting and there were only two tables being used. So, the place was virtually empty. That being said, I still waited for a server to arrive at my table for 10 minutes. The wait for the actual meal wasn't unreasonable at all though. However what arrived at my table was a horrible presentation of food slopped on my plate with red chile sauce splattered on the edges. I'd ordered the biscuit to go-with, but the so-called "biscuit" was some dense concoction of a cornmeal brick. I thought to myself that while the plate in front of me doesn't "look" appealing it doesn't mean it won't taste wonderful. Welp, I plunged my fork into what looked like a small mountain of hog-trough slop and dug in. What I found underneath and hidden under the red and green chile were about two pounds of tepid chunks of potatoes mixed with what seemed to be: one. measley. egg. ONE egg with two pounds of less than luke-warm potatoes. What made matters worse is that the place has a fly problem and the staff actually place fans on your table to deter them. So most of the time that I was pushing myself to find joy in some part of the meal, I was shooing flies away as though I were sitting in the middle of an African swampland. But, I was hungry and I kept trying to enjoy what had the appearance and consistency of pre-chewed something-or-other and by the fourth hopeful bite, I simply gave up trying. I was relieved that the bill was only thirteen bucks, plus an added fifteen percent EXACT tip (because of the ten minute wait in a virtually empty restaurant). I paid my bill with a gracious smile and a thank you and left. I will never go there again. An absolutely disgusting experience. P.S. the coffee wasn't bad. read more

My friend and I were super excited to try this place but it was a huge disappointment. The smothered breakfast hash was bad, no eggs and my friend just couldn't eat it. We ordered the pancaked with the chile honey butter and vanilla bourbon syrup, that was eh ok but not anything to really brag about and my omelet was underwhelming. The biscuit that was with the hash was heavy and tasteless. The waiter offered no butter and honestly the service was subpar. My friend and I had a very interesting experience... We order a vanilla latte which was amazing and the best part of our trip to smothered. We also order the two egg breakfast and the granola parfait tartlet. Both were extremely disappointing. We order the two egg breakfast with scrambled egg that were good, bacon that was cold, potatoes that were cold, and a biscuit that was so doughy and greasy that it was inedible. We let our server know that we were unable to eat the biscuit and they brought us out one piece of toast which was pretty good. As for our granola parfait tartlet the granola tart crust was so hard we were unable to break it apart to eat it. We let our server know and they offered us a sharper knife... yeah I don't think so. The yogurt was blueberry and unsweetened greek yogurt not as advertised on the menu and the berries on top of the tart 2 blueberries and 2 blackberries extremely lack luster to be a parfait. We attended last Sunday so they weren't fully open but for how disappointing our meal was they really didn't offer us anything besides one piece of toast and a sharper knife. We left with our table full of inedible food and our stomachs empty. This restaurant has a lot to improve on unless their goal is to be another abandoned building on central. read more
