We stopped in here after going to the downtown growers market. It was 9 and still a little early so we got right in. We started with the bacon flight, then I had the 2 egg breakfast and my husband had the biscuits and gravy. Both breakfasts were cooked perfectly and the kale salad was a perfect side! The service was friendly and efficient. The restaurant itself is cute and kind of retro. Overall, a great experience and we will go back! read more

Smothered - Breakfast & Brunch Near Me - Albuquerque, New Mexico

I've now been here twice and forgot to take pictures both times! This space used to be a vinegarette with a very different vibe. Now it has a cute modern diner atmosphere with a bar and patio area. They get super busy on the weekend so I would recomend a reservation. We had one and were seated right away on a busy Saturday. The second time was a Monday morning and there was almost no one in there. The service was great, we had attentive knowledgeable servers both times. The coffee was a little disappointing as they could not make some of the drinks listed due to equipment issues but the alcoholic beverages were delicious. The food is huge portions and super flavorful and delicious. The first time I got the Smothered Veggie Hash with salsa verde. The server described the salsa verde as flavorful without a lot of spice and I 100% agree it was very delicious. We also ordered the biscuits for the table and they were huge! They are very filling too so definitely a shareable item. The red chile honey butter was our favorite addition to the biscuits. My boyfriend got the Smothered Biscuits and Gravy, which he liked a lot. My best friend had the Smothered Smashed Scramble with green which was pretty spicy, she loved it. Both the veggie hash and the smothered scramble were super filling, we could only eat about half and took leftovers home. The second time I got the French Toast and that was super delicious too. The bread was perfectly dipped and grilled and they served it with sweet vanilla custard and syrup. It was yummy. I would certainly recomend checking it out for breakfast or brunch. read more

We ate at Smothered for our brunch date this morning. Really cute place and lovely patio area with shade and greenery. Service was great, attentive but not rushing us at all. Had a leisurely brunch and felt at ease staying a few hours. The food was overall very tasty however they forgot to "smother" my friends' duck tostados. This left them lacking in flavor and they both felt the need for salt. Unfortunately we were having such a good time no one realized they forgot the chile and cotija until after we left. My omelette was large and very tasty. The chilaquiles were also good per my other friend. We also ordered biscuits for the table which were very good although we agreed the toppings could have been more flavorful. The red chile honey butter was the best! The others needed spice in the jam (like Heidi's) and maybe honey in the goat cheese. Overall a great experience though. Drinks were also good: lattes and mimosas read more

One thing about living in Central New Mexico is that there are an ever-changing number of restaurants that move on, and new ones pop up in their place. Smothered is in the same location as the old Vinaigrettes. Good location for ample parking just south and east of Old Town. Join the boys from the VA Creative Writing Group as we venture to a new favorite. Great food, efficient service, and a nice internal decor that improves on the previous occupant. While Mother's Day is not a fair estimation of a restaurant, based on my experience today I would not give them a second chance. We opted to sit at the bar, which was fine. Someone was quick to come take our drink order, but it took a solid 15 minutes for our coffee to arrive, and another 5 minutes to have a mug with half and half packets basically tossed at me. It was at this point I saw someone else's lipstick marks on my coffee cup. The Bloody Mary had an aftertaste that could best be described as funky feet. As for the food, we'll never know. After waiting an hour for some French toast and some eggs, we ended up leaving as our food never showed up, nor did our waitress who was going to check on our order. Apparently they comped our drinks but doesn't make up for the shortcomings. Also, as we were sitting at the bar I watched their barista tamp down each serving of espresso grounds with the heel of her hand. . read more

At this point it is clear that we like breakfast and brunch places and we needed to try the recently opened Smothered. The place is spacious and very retro; cozy, even, with plenty of natural light. Our server was very friendly although it started slow. Once we ordered our food, though, we had our appetizers in a few minutes, and the entrees came to our table shortly after. Our appetizers were the bacon flight and the biscuits. The flight had 6 strips of bacon with different sauces and one battered strip. All of them were interesting. You could definitely pick your favorite and you wouldn't be wrong. The biscuits were buttery and more dense than a normal biscuit, but they were good with the jam and the red chile honey butter. For our entrees, we had the smothered chicken and waffles. The chicken was thick, juicy, and perfectly breaded. The waffles were soft and fluffy. The salsa verde was acidic, but not spicy. The kale is definitely not needed. And please give me more of that red chile butter! We will definitely return to try more dishes... those chilaquiles may be a great option for a second visit. read more

I visited Smothered twice during their soft open and really enjoyed it. The biscuits and gravy and omelet are both delicious, and the Piñon Jay and Breakfast Mai Tai cocktails are also tasty. The service on both visits was very friendly and efficient. It can get a bit noisy inside because of the tiled wall and industrial ceiling but the outdoor section is quieter and charming. read more

Food was great, service was outstanding. We had been here before and left unimpressed. Under new management with a new menu this has become one of our favorite spots. The venue is a cool spot that makes you feel like you are not in Albuquerque. read more

Food was pretty good, the service was not the best. Definitely didn't feel welcomed. For being so pricy the customer service should be key.

Really cute decor. Very kind and attentive staff. FABULOUS food!! Was our first time here. Will be back for sure -- we want to work our way through the entire menu!! read more

Smothered is a new brunch on Central. When I first walked in l, I thought this is gonna be a fun spot! Since it's a new spot, it's pretty crowded. The wait was 45 minutes. Cocktails made the wait a pleasant experience: Bellinis, Mai Tais, and Bloody Maries amongst friends made the time pass quick. We started our meal with the Bacon Flight. We devoured that before I remembered to take a picture. I only have a picture of the aftermath. I had the smothered biscuits and gravy. The biscuit was flaky and buttery, perfect! The biscuit was smothered in a chorizo gravy. One friend had the smothered veggie hash, another the avocado toast, and we shared smothered duck tostada. We all enjoyed our food. Only a couple of things that could have been better: I asked for an over easy egg, as did my friend. We found over medium fried eggs on our plates. Like I said, a small thing. I'd go again, and I'd bring friends who like good food, good drinks, and a fun atmosphere. Some pics.... read more

I was excited to try Smothered but I won't be coming back. The food was not very good. We got the smothered breakfast hash and it had no flavor what so ever. We also got the waffle and it came out basically room temp so the butter couldn't even melt. The service was lacking. I asked for a coffee and we had to ask a second time for cream and sugar but no spoon and no salt and pepper were readily available. It did look cool so there's that and the patio was nice. The price was pretty steep too. read more

Overall horrible. First we had a 30 minute wait even though there were many empty tables Our drinks didn't come till after our meal came and we had to remind them. We had the breakfast burrito with chorizo and red chile. The food was cold, bland and felt like it was cooked hours ago. All I tasted was tortilla. It has a chill vibe and cool sign but that can't save it Never again read more

Walked in at opening (8am) and right off the bat an employee greeted us but when I tried to greet back I pick my head up and everyone has got their nose in there phone so I had no idea who to respond to. We got to pick our seat because it was just us when we walked in. We ordered water and a vanilla SF latte w/ whole milk. The latte was amazing! The foam was perfect! I ordered the chicken and biscuit sandwich and my wife got the biscuits n gravy. This food was not very good. My sandwich had some chorizo gravy that was separated and extremely salty! My wife also complained of the salty and greasiness of this separated gravy. What that salty and separate gravy tells me is that this was most likely reheated. The chicken also confirmed by its over cooked almost burnt breading that this food was from the day before. The "new" potatoes were very peppery and my wife described them as Rez potatoes she liked them but I'm not a fan of skin on potatoes. The place was empty accept for us, a nearby table, and the flies that were buzzing around being a nuisance while we ate. We waited quite a while for our tab in a mostly empty restaurant which was a bit bothersome. The xtra star is solely for the Vanilla latte. That thing was Amazing! read more

This place is deficits delicious!! My favorite is the chicken and waffles. Their mimosas are also a wonderful option.

While I very much enjoyed the ambiance, I give the food and service a 2.5. we waited too long for "breakfast..." IMO, waiting longer than 20 minutes is excessive, especially if the restaurant is half full. After 35 min our food finally came out. I ordered the smothered scramble, and it was missing half of the ingredients.... It did not have onions, peppers, cheese, or cilantro. I spoke to an employee about it, and he confirmed it was supposed to have those ingredients... Then said he saw it sitting there and thought it looked like, but didn't mention anything to the kitchen... Which I thought was very strange? They offer to remake it, but I declined because I didn't want to wait another 30 plus minutes. My hubby ordered the smothered burrito and he enjoyed it. Red and green chili were spicy and delicious... Ambiance was very lively, and maybe I'll check it out once they work out the kinks. read more

Seriously I've never been so let down in my life. Extremely mediocre. If your really New Mexican just know there Red chill or what they have "red sauce" tastes like nothing. The chilaquiles were dryer than dry but I still ate it. My mom had to send her plate back cause the chorizo in her omelette was terrible texture and not like...Chorizo. The only thing positive I can say was the potatoes and service was super friendly but I mean you can't really mess up a potato. Also the aesthetic and ambiance was extremely cute but the food left a nasty taste in my mouth. Honestly I think you're better going to Dennys. read more

We had a great meal at Smothered. The service was outstanding. The ambiance fantastic. The portions large-enough to take some home. The Carne Adovado Smash Bowl was outstanding, as was the Gravy Smash Bowl and the Churro Waffle with Ice Cream was the bomb according to those around us. My only real concern is that I think they need to create a better biscuit, it's dry, not flakey and seems reheated. As breakfast spots go in ABQ, this is a good one and we will be back. read more

The food was not good. We got the carnitas smash and it had a weird taste to the meat and the Pineapple Express and the firecracker did not mix good at all. The server said it could be the mezcal not everyone likes it. I do like mezcal can even drink it straight but it was not a good mix at all. read more

We went to Smothered on 10/11 around 11:45. The restaurant was not full by any means and our party of 3 was immediately seated. After we were seated, we waited almost 10 minutes before our server appeared. We were ready to order as we had ample time to look at the menu before she came to our table. She asked if we wanted the biscuits or bacon flight for the table. We politely declined and told her we were ready to order our meal. She kept pushing the bacon flight. We reiterated we did not want an appetizer and we're ready to order. We placed our order. She returned with our drinks then disappeared. We did not see her for about 25-30 minutes. No one came to the table to offer refills or even check on us. She then popped up about a half an hour later and asked if we were waiting for a bacon flight. I told her no we were waiting for our meal. She said she thought we were waiting for biscuits or the bacon flight. I repeated we were waiting on our meal. She said she knew she put our order in "a while ago." A while ago? Really? She couldn't even remember what we were waiting on. I think our order was forgotten or lost in my opinion. We did not wait around to find out. We got up and left. Here's the deal...I can deal with slow service, forgotten items, etc., but you have to COMMUNICATE. Communication goes a long way to forgive these types of things. But we were ignored for over 30 minutes. Not a single person checked on us. I'd love to tell you about the food but we never got our order. If you decide to go to Smothered, I hope your experience is better. 0/10 we will never return. read more

Lovely environment, "make at home" level of food and above average prices. The environment was very relaxing and aesthetic. With the spacing of seats apart and the option to enjoy in or outside dining, its a very nice spot to eat in the spring. The food was very disappointing especially after seeing it all over social media. Similar to another review, we had ordered the breakfast hash, and to our surprise, no eggs or cheese. We tracked down our server and brought it to his attention. He was very polite about it and took it off our ticket but unfortunately the kitchen only made the eggs, instead of remaking the entire plate. I was forced to eat cold potatoes with plain eggs that came out 10 minutes later. So, my $16 plate was very unenjoyable. The location definitely has potential, and you can see their vision. Overall the kitchen needs refining and the servers need more urgency as this place is "up and coming." read more
