Chicken and waffles with over easy egg
    Annie J.

I arrived 20 minutes before closing, so asked if it was OK to stay and order food. Lumi, who would be my waitress, said it was no problem. I believed they would say no, but that didn't happen. The response to this question can be hit or miss, but those restaurants that do say it's all right are still accommodating. Within a few days of my first move to Albuquerque from the upper Midwest, it was shocking to arrive an hour before closing and be told the kitchen was closed. I won't mention the name of the well-known New Mexican restaurant that serves breakfast and closes at 3 p.m., but that narrows it down. Back to Smothered, Lumi was really attentive even though the rest of the crew was in the closing process. Smothered is new on the scene, and they have than great table service. I ordered a latte and their Chicken and Waffles with an over-medium egg. This was probably the best chicken and waffles I've ever had. The chicken was tender and the waffles were perfect. Not too hard, not too soft. So were their potatoes. The latte was solid, just what you'd expect. They created a bright, colorful, and welcoming interior. I highly recommend checking them out. This could be my new favorite place to eat breakfast or lunch.

Smothered chicken and biscuit sandwich with chorizo gravy $17. It was not good.

3 = A-OKAY Pros: Private parking, cute Instagram looking interior, outside patio, and good service. Cons: The food. We asked what were the top dishes and were recommended the burrito as well as the biscuits & chicken with the chorizo gravy. The dishes were recommended because they were "big", they were not described as delicious. The chorizo gravy tasted like spaghetti sauce. So bizarre. Where is the chorizo? I was excited to try this because I actually use chorizo when I make my own biscuits and gravy. Smothered's was not good. The biscuit was not flakey / crumbling. The texture felt like the biscuit had been sitting out for a while and was reheated in the microwave. The potatoes were bland. The dish itself is in fact large, but after eating 1/4 of everything my taste buds were bored. There was no desire to take another bite because nothing was exciting. I'm sorry. The Americano was also bad. I rate a place on the food. Even if I get "bad" service, if the food is good I'm still going to give high stars for the food. Sadly, Smothered did not live up to the hype. My bill came out to $25 and for the amount of food that was received I guess the price fits? However, the flavor was not there and so $25 for a plate and a drink was very disappointing.

My bf and I were in ABQ visiting his sister who recently moved here for work. The ABQ foodie scene is crazy! So many delicious options. Smothered is one of those places that some locals recommended. We stopped by for breakfast before heading to the airport to fly back to FL. We sat outside since the weather was chilly. The restaurant looked clean and pretty inside with all the colors. I ordered the Carne adovada smash which was full of flavor! I love spicy food so I ordered with both red and green chile. Definitely filled me up. Their coffee was also so good! I had a lavender latte.

Another breakfast place in Albuquerque? Sure why not! Who doesn't love breakfast! Smothered is located in the old Vinaigrette spot. Nestled between old town and downtown. It was very busy when we arrived, we were quoted a short wait, but, they had some space at the bar, so we took that spot instead. It is an open space, so prepare for it to get pretty loud, especially when fully seated. The menu is not big but I still had difficulty deciding on that to get. We shared a bacon flight to start, which was fun! The food was tasty and quite filling! Our service at the bar was great. The coffee barista was friendly and tentative which was appreciated. Fun spot for breakfast if you want something a bit different than the classic New Mexico fare, but you can still get your chile fix too!

What a great meal & experience! Everything was DELICIOUS! I don't usually eat meat but oh my word we got the corned beef for the nostalgia & the bacon sampler for fun & have NO REGRETS. For those who don't eat meat the veggie omelette was great & both chiles are vegetarian & gluten free (Javier the waiter was AWESOME & let us know that when we asked about the style). In fact the entire staff was friendly & attentive. He also recommended the queso & that was a great call. The chips are homemade & light. We got Bloody Marys & which were great. The portions are HUGE! Love the sunny & plant filled ambiance too. Very fun!

Wow! A great new find. I don't know how long the place has been open but it has a great atmosphere. Music is playing and there are a lot of customers. The place has a modern feel to it. The food is a disappointment. They are trying to give it a modern vibe but the flavors don't mix. The biscuits and gravy are different, not really my style. Tastes like spaghetti or pizza gravy, something new and probably won't order that again. The scrambled eggs are decent I just don't know about the flavors. Service was good kept my coffee filled, checked on us. I think I will be back but have to really think of what I'm ordering

Buzz Bunny, mimosa and a cameo by the famous Javier himself!

This place is fantastic. We sat at the bar and had Javier's famous Buzz Bunny, which hit the spot after a long week. Great service, great breakfast, great ambience great new place!

Food was good!! Staff was friendly. The decorations in there are awesome. Doesn't even feel like you're in New Mexico lol. Very vintage and aesthetic. Good place for pictures too

Brunch Bliss at Smothered - A New Favorite in ABQ! We made an online reservation for Saturday brunch at Smothered, and from start to finish, the experience was a hit. The vibe is retro with a modern twist--clean, playful, and aesthetically pleasing. I especially loved the self-serve coffee bar concept, which added a casual, community feel to the space. I started with a Bellini followed by mimosas--both were delicious and perfectly balanced. My husband went for the Highland Highball and was definitely not disappointed. For food, I had the French toast with crème brûlée vanilla custard and a side of bacon. It was rich and decadent--the kind of dish that doesn't even need syrup. I dipped each bite in the custard and savored the creative twist on a classic. My husband ordered the chicken biscuit sandwich, which came with tender fried chicken, chorizo gravy, and a sunny-side-up egg on freshly baked biscuits. I stole a few bites and can confirm: the chorizo gravy was packed with flavor, the chicken was fork-tender, and the biscuits were heavenly. Smothered is clearly becoming a popular spot, and for good reason. It's the perfect place to slow down, sip a mocktail or cocktail, and catch up with friends while enjoying a satisfying and well-thought-out brunch. We'll definitely be back!

Very cute aesthetic and fun spot for brunch. I enjoyed the firecracker cocktail and the breakfast BLT was scrumptious. The chicken and waffles lacked a lot to be desired, but will try another menu item next time. We sat at the bar and Holly was a fantastic server/bartender/barista. This company has fantastic service overall.

Gotta say, I loved it! My chicken and waffles was one of the best dishes I've ever had, no kidding! From the side kale salad to the fried chicken, the potatoes, everything was just perfect in my opinion. My wife loved her meal as well! Great staff, cool environment, I hope our next experience is just as wonderful!

Place was super cute and clean. Server was great but I was disappointed when I got my food. Ordered the smothered breakfast hash with all 3 chilis on the side. It was literally a plate of potatoes and it looked like something you eat camping. Couldn't see any egg, tasted no onion and had a spec of green pepper no cheese and no cilantro and a piece of dry sourdough no butter or jam. Bacon flight was interesting.

    Over easy???
    Deb T.

The service here is very good. Too bad the food doesn't live up to it. The first bacon flight was so undercooked we had to send it back. A second flight was cooked correctly and was tasty. Apparently to make up for the under done bacon, the biscuits were so over cooked they could double as bricks. The weird gravy couldn't soften them. The "over easy" egg was over done and had a half inch ruffle of brown crinkles around the edge. That may be the newest style, but to me it's just a sign of lazy cooking. The coffee and service were very good. My husband summed it up, "The most I've ever paid for a bad breakfast."
