He thought it was tasty, but would have preferred regular shredded hash browns to the smash browns. I had the chicken and waffles. The waffle and the bourbon syrup were delicious. It was a great idea to serve a boneless skinless chicken thigh - no bones to deal with - but the thigh was a little too browned and a little dry. It had good flavor despite that. I also had a tasty iced latte. Hopefully we can return so I can try one of their smash bowls. read more

I arrived 20 minutes before closing, so asked if it was OK to stay and order food. Lumi, who would be my waitress, said it was no problem. I believed they would say no, but that didn't happen. The response to this question can be hit or miss, but those restaurants that do say it's all right are still accommodating. Within a few days of my first move to Albuquerque from the upper Midwest, it was shocking to arrive an hour before closing and be told the kitchen was closed. I won't mention the name of the well-known New Mexican restaurant that serves breakfast and closes at 3 p.m., but that narrows it down. Back to Smothered, Lumi was really attentive even though the rest of the crew was in the closing process. Smothered is new on the scene, and they have than great table service. I ordered a latte and their Chicken and Waffles with an over-medium egg. This was probably the best chicken and waffles I've ever had. The chicken was tender and the waffles were perfect. Not too hard, not too soft. So were their potatoes. The latte was solid, just what you'd expect. They created a bright, colorful, and welcoming interior. I highly recommend checking them out. We asked what were the top dishes and were recommended the burrito as well as the biscuits & chicken with the chorizo gravy. The dishes were recommended because they were "big", they were not described as delicious. The chorizo gravy tasted like spaghetti sauce. So bizarre. Where is the chorizo? I was excited to try this because I actually use chorizo when I make my own biscuits and gravy. Smothered's was not good. The biscuit was not flakey / crumbling. The texture felt like the biscuit had been sitting out for a while and was reheated in the microwave. The potatoes were bland. The dish itself is in fact large, but after eating 1/4 of everything my taste buds were bored. There was no desire to take another bite because nothing was exciting. I'm sorry. The Americano was also bad. I rate a place on the food. Even if I get "bad" service, if the food is good I'm still going to give high stars for the food. Sadly, Smothered did not live up to the hype. Another breakfast place in Albuquerque? Sure why not! Who doesn't love breakfast! Smothered is located in the old Vinaigrette spot. Nestled between old town and downtown. It was very busy when we arrived, we were quoted a short wait, but, they had some space at the bar, so we took that spot instead. It is an open space, so prepare for it to get pretty loud, especially when fully seated. The menu is not big but I still had difficulty deciding on that to get. What a great meal & experience! Everything was DELICIOUS! I don't usually eat meat but oh my word we got the corned beef for the nostalgia & the bacon sampler for fun & have NO REGRETS. For those who don't eat meat the veggie omelette was great & both chiles are vegetarian & gluten free (Javier the waiter was AWESOME & let us know that when we asked about the style). Wow! A great new find. I don't know how long the place has been open but it has a great atmosphere. Music is playing and there are a lot of customers. The place has a modern feel to it. The food is a disappointment. They are trying to give it a modern vibe but the flavors don't mix. The biscuits and gravy are different, not really my style. The service here is very good. Too bad the food doesn't live up to it. The first bacon flight was so undercooked we had to send it back. A second flight was cooked correctly and was tasty. Apparently to make up for the under done bacon, the biscuits were so over cooked they could double as bricks. The weird gravy couldn't soften them. The "over easy" egg was over done and had a half inch ruffle of brown crinkles around the edge. That may be the newest style, but to me it's just a sign of lazy cooking. Had brunch today and it was super delicious! The staff was outstanding! Shelli was our server and she was on top of things. Communication was perfect and drinks filled asap. Im trying to give them some slack.. They are relatively new, the place is super cute, the coffee was good. I do want it to succeed. It was a bit busy, but that was expected, they did get us seated sooner than they expected, but it was a pretty long time before we got a server. (no biggie new place new things to figure out) That being said i apparently have very different taste preferences than the cook/recipe maker. And its mostly about cumin, I got the Breakfast Burrito smothered with green. i found that they spice the green with way to much cumin. there in lies my biggest gripe, if i dont like the main sauce you smother with it kinda knocks out a bunch of your menu.. My compatriot ordered the veggie hash with salsa verde, with some duck. and unfortunately this too we both disliked the spicing in the salsa verde. (disliked even more than the green chile), it was kinda sour, and once again cumin forward. we both picked at our meals and got enough out of them to call it quits. the good things were the coffee and the biscuit that came with her hash... ill probably come back and try the red and the gravy. maybe we can even get small samplers or have them put the smothering on the side so we can give them another chance. read more

This is such a cute spot and I'm really happy they opened it at this location. There is definitely always a wait, so make sure to reserve a table or if you're 1-2 people you can sit at the bar. The bar service was amazing, super quick and very kind. Loved our barista, she was super talented. I really enjoyed my meal, I got the hash with veggies and steak tips. We also got pancakes to charge and the chile butter was soooo amazing I thought about it for days after. My friend got the veggie hash with sweet potato and she didn't like it because it was mushy but I enjoyed my choice of meal a lot. Their sauces and chiles are also really delicious, definitely try all three if you can! The staff was very friendly! I don't know what issues people are with the food. The massive biscuits are home style (IYKYK) and bacon flight was awesome! My favorite off the bacon flight was the chile verde. We ordered some cocktails and a yogurt parfait with chicken and waffles. The potatoes were my favorite but I'm also a potato-HOE if you know what I mean. Pricing is about average for breakfast here in the Duke City but the portions are large and everything is made from scratch. You can't beat that! The spot is cute too. There's private parking but as we have a huge truck, we parked on the street. The inside is cute and filled with plants. Upbeat music is in the air and the outside patios look nice. There were a lot of mocktail and cocktail options. I am sad because we came on the last day of the current menu and many things we enjoyed today are not on the new menu. i would say this place is very pretty and great vibes . service was great and food came out fresh . i will say being a NM native this was super overpriced (the whole menu was $$) and lacked flavor and general NM breakfast burrito . it is very tourist area . so if your new to the ABQ scene and want to have a entry to NM breakfast this is your place . Fantastic experience. Went for brunch with the girls they were so wonderfully accommodating when we asked to move outside because it was such a nice day. We got to sit on the patio under the apple and pomegranate trees. First time here and I loved it so much I came back two days later. First I love the decor! It's fun, colorful, and a beautiful back patio. I was seated inside close to the bar the first day and when I went back on Friday we had to try the patio. The first day I ordered the hash and added chorizo. I've now been here twice and forgot to take pictures both times! This space used to be a vinegarette with a very different vibe. Now it has a cute modern diner atmosphere with a bar and patio area. They get super busy on the weekend so I would recomend a reservation. We had one and were seated right away on a busy Saturday. The second time was a Monday morning and there was almost no one in there. The service was great, we had attentive knowledgeable servers both times. The coffee was a little disappointing as they could not make some of the drinks listed due to equipment issues but the alcoholic beverages were delicious. The food is huge portions and super flavorful and delicious. The first time I got the Smothered Veggie Hash with salsa verde. The server described the salsa verde as flavorful without a lot of spice and I 100% agree it was very delicious. We also ordered the biscuits for the table and they were huge! They are very filling too so definitely a shareable item. The red chile honey butter was our favorite addition to the biscuits. My boyfriend got the Smothered Biscuits and Gravy, which he liked a lot. My best friend had the Smothered Smashed Scramble with green which was pretty spicy, she loved it. Both the veggie hash and the smothered scramble were super filling, we could only eat about half and took leftovers home. The second time I got the French Toast and that was super delicious too. We ate at Smothered for our brunch date this morning. Really cute place and lovely patio area with shade and greenery. Service was great, attentive but not rushing us at all. Had a leisurely brunch and felt at ease staying a few hours. The food was overall very tasty however they forgot to "smother" my friends' duck tostados. This left them lacking in flavor and they both felt the need for salt. Unfortunately we were having such a good time no one realized they forgot the chile and cotija until after we left. My omelette was large and very tasty. The chilaquiles were also good per my other friend. We also ordered biscuits for the table which were very good although we agreed the toppings could have been more flavorful. The red chile honey butter was the best!
