They offer a wide variety of options. The day we went, they had a chopped beef sandwich combo with a drink and a side for around $10, which felt like a solid deal. For my sides, I tried the mashed potatoes, potato salad, creamed corn, and okra. The okra was a standout--fresh, crispy, and really well done. The potato salad was also very good and worth getting. The creamed corn was something I hadn't had before--it included bacon and had a really unique flavor. It might not be for everyone, but I personally couldn't stop eating it, so I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. As for the chopped beef sandwich, it wasn't my favorite. I stopped in here for a drive-thru take out lunch of a beef brisket wrap, which was a combo deal including fried okra and pink lemonade. The meal was very satisfying: fresh cut delicious beef placed between a super soft roll with choice condiments on the side and okra being some of the best I've had (and I make my own at home). It was perfectly breaded and fried to a crispy, non-oily perfection with some light seasoning. The food here was pretty decent. While driving to South Padre Island, we stopped here to get lunch. It was after the core lunch hours, so it wasn't crazy busy, but there were a decent number of customers dining in. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the smoked chicken salad on croissant with a side of cabbage. My coworker ordered the pulled pork sandwich with a side of pinto beans. Our waitress, Lucy, was super nice and attentive. Our food came out within 10 minutes. Overall, our meal was delicious. There are hand drawn pictures on the walls as well as pictures from way back when. The service is great and the waitress gave us a name tag for her that you put on a sign holder to let her know when we needed her. Very smart idea that more places should use. I mentioned this to the young lady with the red shirt, since the girl refused to give me her name. We had two orders of Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes, one plate with Mac & Cheese, the other with creamed corn. The Chicken Fried Steak was excellent. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant with 1 undercooked half raw potato thrown in to make it seem like real mashed potatoes. The creamed corn was canned sweet corn with heavy cream thrown in. There were black kernals in my bowl. The heavy cream had cooled and formed solid chunks on the top. It tasted terrible. The mac & cheese is bland and not very cheesy. The bread rolls were very tough, chewy and didn't have much of a yeast flavor. A small Styrofoam cup of unsweetened tea and a diet coke cost nearly $4. Each our dinner for two cost $45.68. Just had a great dinner at Smolik's. Everything was delicious, brisket, sausage, ribs. Creamed corn was excellent including the cabbage. Only disappointment was they were out of chicken. If you are driving to Corpus Christi, it's worth a stop in Mathis to eat here. Portions are very big. I now have lunch for the next two days. My young daughter also realized that she left her favorite ring in the bathroom on the counter about an hour after we left. I called and they found it. I guess I ordered the wrong thing based on everyone elses reviews. I ordered a smoked turkey sandwich with fried okra. The best part of the sandwich was the toasted bun and the bbq sauce. The turkey was not smoked, was tough and void of flavor. The only flavor was from what I added with the salt/pepper and hot sauce. The okra was fine but did need salt. My husband ordered the brisket sandwich and he had a better experience than I did. He really enjoyed the brisket. Our service was super friendly and very prompt. You walk in and read the menu on the wall, and walk up to place your order. Then you select where you would like to sit, & once your food is ready, the food is taken to your table. The wait service was really good & even have a process in place to get your wait service. Consists of placing your wait staff's name tag so that your wait staff can see you need help. The atmosphere is casual, like an old barn with table booths with country music playing. My spouse opted for the 3 meat plate combo and I Chose the big arse rib! Yah I think I have mentioned I love a good piece of meat! Who doesn't? This rib, was big, juicy, had the right amount of fat and burnt sides. This meat explodes in your mouth, with all the juices. My only regret is not buying food to bring home. My spouse a true country boy, fell in love with his meat! No complaints, brisket was juicy, sausage cooked to perfection & pork ribs oh so tender! The sides, mac & cheese creamy and tasteful. The potato salad was just as good. The buns, oh my, was hard for me not to eat everything. No complaints. I'm not a huge meat fan in general but my bf told me this place was in the top 50 in the nation for bbq (full disclosure, that might or might not be true lol). Either way, we stopped. Upon walking in we were greeted by a friendly staff and smells of delicious things smoking. We both ordered the two meat plate; he got pork ribs and brisket (marbled) and I got pulled pork and brisket (marbled). So according to him, (he ate them so fast I didn't get a chance to try (insert side eye here)) the ribs were delicious, juicy and falling off the bone. The marbled brisket we both agreed was juicy, smokey and to me, had just the right amount of fat. It came with a side of bbq sauce, which tasted homemade and was good in its own right, but the brisket didn't need it. It was delicious without but equally delicious with. The pulled pork, honestly, was dry. It came with a sauce of its own which was needed to moisten it up. Def tasty with the sauce but dry without. Both meals came with sides, I got the okra which was just regular fried okra, but tasty and the Mac and cheese which was again too dry for my liking. Both came with dinner rolls, which to me are usually a throw away but these tasted fresh, homemade and fluffy. Service was quick(ish) and friendly. Overall, if you are in the Mathis neighborhood you should def stop by Smoliks for a great meal. I definitely recommend this place! read more
