Sunday lunch is definitely attractive for locals! Tables quickly fill with families. We've traveled thru Mathis a bazillion times and finally decided to stop for lunch. First timers here and we chose to eat out on the patio for our large party of 11. Cool breeze helped get us through our meal before it got too warm. The waitstaff was busy serving their patrons and my goodness, they are all super stars, especially Jennifer!! We ordered the Chuckwagon Family meal, plus 3 lbs of ribs, half a chicken so we had just about every protein on the menu to try. Typical sides like potato salad, green beans and creamy coleslaw with their delicious pickles rounded out meal with plenty leftover to feed 2 more. Very nostalgic decor and desserts to go...if you can't seem to squeeze that in after your feast! Their own brand of bottles of specialty sauces are a nice take home gift

Quickly becoming my usual stop between Corpus Christi and San Antonio. If I could, I'd also take the time to peruse all the historical items placed within the restaurant. It's part restaurant, history museum and country store and bakery. I can imagine it was probably much bigger back in the day. Such a great stop for amazing Texas BBQ and reading up on some history.

led here by yelp reviews, good call! hubbie ordered 1 meat plate with pork ribs, tater salad & okra, i got 1 meat with lean brisket, sweet potato & cabbage, we both opted for dinner roll rather than bread. first i appreciated variety of sides offered, much more than your usual bbq joint offerings. service was very fast & friendly - we were there @4PM on a holiday monday so probably a bit less busy, more tables seated around 5. you order at the window, and then are given a table number & server name. server brings out drinks & food and if you need something, put server card back up - great idea! everything was really good, generous portion sizes. hubbie got 3 ribs - but one was very big end piece. i received 4 thickly sliced pieces of brisket. both meats were tender, juicy & flavorful. all sides were well prepared. i didnt care for bbq sauce - it was thin and vinegary - but thats a personal preference & neither meat needed it. check is brought with the meal for you to sign - since food is brought to you and refills taken care of by server, dont forget to add a tip. SAVE ROOM for dessert! they had choices of pies, puddings, cookies and more that all looked good. we opted for a fave - buttermilk pie, it was cool and creamy & down right yummy! casual spot, great for families. restaurant is right off 37, so if you are traveling through mathis - plan to stop here!

You stand in line to order. Find a table to be served at and a waitress will serve you your drinks and food. The food was delicious and we loved our entire experience. We will be returning.

Good brisket, excellent cabbage, and good tater salad. Cool country decor. Not many choices left on bakery items so we didn't try that as we were hoping for kolaches. Overall a good lunch stop on the way to South Padre.

Great bbq and bakery. I love the ribs! And the yeast rolls! We often buy a dozen and take them home.

The food here was pretty decent. While driving to South Padre Island, we stopped here to get lunch. It was after the core lunch hours, so it wasn't crazy busy, but there were a decent number of customers dining in. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the smoked chicken salad on croissant with a side of cabbage. My coworker ordered the pulled pork sandwich with a side of pinto beans. Our waitress, Lucy, was super nice and attentive. Our food came out within 10 minutes. Overall, our meal was delicious. I enjoyed my sandwich and cabbage.y coworker mentioned that his pork was a little dry but said it was delicious. We both agreed that this is a place where we would stop again to get food.

Restaurant right up 37 next to the McDonald's

Omg , I am from out of state and couldn't wait to stop here again , the brisket sandwich is huge super tender, and delicious it's only $11 , the mac & cheese delicious also .

Review: Butter's BBQ - Deserving of the Top 50 Title…read more Stepping into Butters BBQ, a true brick-and-mortar establishment, the atmosphere immediately confirmed its reputation. With plenty of indoor seating and a genuine, welcoming BBQ joint vibe, the setting is as comfortable as the staff is enthusiastic. This is clearly a location where the team is passionate about their craft, and their helpfulness in guiding us through the menu was much appreciated. Having secured a coveted spot on the "Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ" awards list, the question was: did the food live up to the hype? The answer is a resounding yes. The Smoked Meats: A Masterclass in Fire and Smoke The menu offers a tight selection of Texas staples, all executed with precision: * Brisket: The star of the show delivered on nearly every front. It boasted a good tenderness and a beautifully defined smoke ring. While a few outer edges were slightly dry, the overall flavor profile was rich, deep, and satisfying, proving why the brisket is the cornerstone of any great Texas joint. * Pork Ribs: These were exceptionally tender, falling away from the bone without being mushy. The flavor balance was perfect--rich and meaty, thankfully avoiding the overly "hammy" note that can sometimes plague smoked ribs. A solid rib glaze complemented the excellent dry rub flavor, resulting in a perfectly balanced bite. * Jalapeño Cheese Sausage: A standout item. This double-grind sausage had a fantastic consistency and was heavily infused with a nice peppery flavor and well-integrated spices. While a minor note, a bit more cheese would have elevated it further, but the quality of the sausage itself was undeniable. * The Texas Twinkie: A true piece of barbecue artistry. This treat--a large jalapeño stuffed with tender brisket and cream cheese, then wrapped in thick-cut bacon--was executed flawlessly. The preparation was exactly as a Texas Twinkie should be, finished with a beautiful, savory glaze on the bacon that sealed the deal. Elevated Sides The sides were not an afterthought, featuring one truly memorable dish: * Mexican Elote: This was an excellent side dish and a clear elevation of the classic street corn. The careful mixture of flavors, topped with a solid amount of Cotija cheese and a generous squeeze of lime, made this a bright, tangy, and creamy complement to the heavy meats. * Brisket Charro Beans: A comforting and hearty offering. This was a pretty standard preparation of pinto beans, mixed expertly with brisket and onion--a reliable, staple side dish that did its job well. Final Verdict Butter's is very deserving of its "Texas Monthly Top 50" position. The meat quality, especially the ribs and the perfect Texas Twinkie, combined with the elevated Elote, solidifies its position as a very solid BBQ joint. We left feeling impressed not only by the food but by the genuinely passionate staff who run the operation. This is a must-visit for any serious Bbq enthusiast.
