Sunday lunch is definitely attractive for locals! Tables quickly fill with families. We've traveled thru Mathis a bazillion times and finally decided to stop for lunch. First timers here and we chose to eat out on the patio for our large party of 11. Cool breeze helped get us through our meal before it got too warm. The waitstaff was busy serving their patrons and my goodness, they are all super stars, especially Jennifer!! We ordered the Chuckwagon Family meal, plus 3 lbs of ribs, half a chicken so we had just about every protein on the menu to try. Typical sides like potato salad, green beans and creamy coleslaw with their delicious pickles rounded out meal with plenty leftover to feed 2 more. I did not get to go but my husband was busy working around the house. His cousin dropped by the house to visit. They were both hungry so they decided to go to Smoliks Smokhouse. They were gone for a good little minute. But when he got home all he could do was talk how good everything was and how polite and nice their waitress was . He got the 2 meat plate.Brisket and sausage, beans and potato salad. He described it to me as being the best delicious food and most welcoming waitress he has encountered in a long time . This was a surprise, because when it first opened we went several times and the meat was always tough and the sides were not that good . In my opinion it was too expensive to go and leave almost the whole plate sitting on the table .And they had what looked to me as high schoolers as waitress. It had been a few years since we went to eat there. BUT the way my husband talked and raved about it I cannot wait to go and experience it for myself . I had the brisket, okra and a baked potato. All of it was yummy and more than filling. The okra was fresh and hot, the potato was luke watm but still tasty. The brisket was moist and tender. My girlfriend had catfish, baked potato and Mac n cheese. The Mac n cheese was not hot and the potato was like mine. She said the fish was hot Fresh and tasty. What delicious BBQ. In a region where bar-b-que is plentiful that says a heap about the quality of this place. I got lost on the highway. I stopped in here for a drive-thru take out lunch of a beef brisket wrap, which was a combo deal including fried okra and pink lemonade. The meal was very satisfying: fresh cut delicious beef placed between a super soft roll with choice condiments on the side and okra being some of the best I've had (and I make my own at home). It was perfectly breaded and fried to a crispy, non-oily perfection with some light seasoning. The food here was pretty decent. While driving to South Padre Island, we stopped here to get lunch. It was after the core lunch hours, so it wasn't crazy busy, but there were a decent number of customers dining in. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the smoked chicken salad on croissant with a side of cabbage. My coworker ordered the pulled pork sandwich with a side of pinto beans. Our waitress, Lucy, was super nice and attentive. Our food came out within 10 minutes. Overall, our meal was delicious. Just had a great dinner at Smolik's. Everything was delicious, brisket, sausage, ribs. Creamed corn was excellent including the cabbage. Only disappointment was they were out of chicken. If you are driving to Corpus Christi, it's worth a stop in Mathis to eat here. Portions are very big. I now have lunch for the next two days. My young daughter also realized that she left her favorite ring in the bathroom on the counter about an hour after we left. I called and they found it. But after I bragged on your moist , marbled , tender excellent brisket I I was shocked at how bad the flavor.was. Moist and tender yes but a the fake l(liquid smoke) or dirty wood horrible flavor. When you walk in it immediately smells like Texas Barbecue. The whole place is like a little museum of the area. There are hand drawn pictures on the walls as well as pictures from way back when. It's a really cool place. I'm going to go in record that the Po' Boy I got was the best I've ever had, and I've had many. The service is great and the waitress gave us a name tag for her that you put on a sign holder to let her know when we needed her. Very smart idea that more places should use. All in all an absolutely fantastic experience. Half way between San Antonio and Port A it's the perfect spot to stop and fill up. Can't wait to come this way again! read more

I mentioned this to the young lady with the red shirt, since the girl refused to give me her name. We stopped here again on our way to Port A, just expecting some okay BBQ and this didn't even meet that expectation this time. The brisket was cold and rubbery and smelled of liquid smoke. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant with 1 undercooked half raw potato thrown in to make it seem like real mashed potatoes. The creamed corn was canned sweet corn with heavy cream thrown in. There were black kernals in my bowl. The heavy cream had cooled and formed solid chunks on the top. It tasted terrible. The mac & cheese is bland and not very cheesy. The bread rolls were very tough, chewy and didn't have much of a yeast flavor. A small Styrofoam cup of unsweetened tea and a diet coke cost nearly $4. Each our dinner for two cost $45.68. I guess I ordered the wrong thing based on everyone elses reviews. I ordered a smoked turkey sandwich with fried okra. The best part of the sandwich was the toasted bun and the bbq sauce. The turkey was not smoked, was tough and void of flavor. The only flavor was from what I added with the salt/pepper and hot sauce. The okra was fine but did need salt. Gosh I just don't know where to start on this review! Headed home, after a short trip this Smolik's was on the way. Really happy we decided to pop in and try the food. You walk in and read the menu on the wall, and walk up to place your order. Then you select where you would like to sit, & once your food is ready, the food is taken to your table. The wait service was really good & even have a process in place to get your wait service. Consists of placing your wait staff's name tag so that your wait staff can see you need help. The atmosphere is casual, like an old barn with table booths with country music playing. My spouse opted for the 3 meat plate combo and I Chose the big arse rib! Yah I think I have mentioned I love a good piece of meat! Who doesn't? This rib, was big, juicy, had the right amount of fat and burnt sides. This meat explodes in your mouth, with all the juices. My only regret is not buying food to bring home. My spouse a true country boy, fell in love with his meat! No complaints, brisket was juicy, sausage cooked to perfection & pork ribs oh so tender! The sides, mac & cheese creamy and tasteful. The potato salad was just as good. The buns, oh my, was hard for me not to eat everything. No complaints. Driving from SA and stopped in for a bite. Pretty good bbq!! I had the brisket, pork ribs, and sausage and it all was juicy. The Mac and cheese was AMAZING. Cream corn was also good. The main reason I wanted to write this review was because of the amazing one of a kind service. True southern hospitality the waitress made us feel right at home.
