Even though this place been around for a while this was my first time coming here for the so called brisket sandwich. The sandwich was real good with a good ample amount of sliced brisket. I would probably give this place 5 stars but i just have one concern. Even though it's during this times during the pandemic we went through the drive-thru. I must say I was disappointed in the amount of time it took me to get my sandwich. There was a total of 3 vehicles ahead of me and I know I stood in that drive-thru line for over 30 minutes. Last week, my husband ordered a sliced brisket sandwich (marbled side) at the window of the downtown location. When he got home and opened it, it had a 1/2" slab of white fat and a little bit of fat. I was driving to Corpus Christi and was planning to stop by another BBQ joint in Three Rivers (Sowell's BBQ), and I can't find it. So I kept on driving and when I passed Mathis, I yelped for local restaurants and this place came out on top, so I decided to make a stop for lunch. I got myself the 3 meat place with two sides. Let's start with the two sides, potato salad is great, but the coleslaw is watery and tasted awful. The three meats: brisket is pretty good, I couldn't taste the jalapeno in the jalapeno sausage, although that could because they give me the wrong sausage, if that is the case, the sausage is above average. The best meat on the plate is the Chicken, it was falling off the bone and very tasty. Overall, good place to have lunch on your way to Corpus Christi or heading to San Antonio. read more

Came in for the BBQ! This is a convenient place to stop right off the highway, with ample parking, and fast service. They offer a full array of meat- sausages, fowl, beef, pork- you name it. The interior is made to look like a rustic barn setting. I got the brisket sandwich- which was piled high with a lean brisket. It had been smoked well, but was served with a pretty weak sauce. They could really step up their BBQ sauce game. They offer sweet tea, and all drinks come in to-go containers. Convenient if you're on the road, but Mother Nature will suffer. Sigh! The service was friendly, but slow. Prices are fair, considering how much meat you get! You get piles of meat. I pity the vegan who stumbles into this cathedral of meat. The restaurant also serves as a gift shop- need a cookbook written by the local church ladies or day old pastries? This place has 'em! Smolik's is probably best known for being a regular in the Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ joints in the world (meaning Texas). However, the accompanying bakery and meat shop should not be missed if you happen upon either location in tiny Mathis. I found the old world fruit kolaches to be very tasty, and depending on when you find your way to Smolik's, you will find an assortment of sausage and jerky options. If it is available, definitely take home some summer sausage and if you opt to eat in the restaurant, don't pass on the jalapeno cheddar sausage. While the upstart Butter's BBQ might be the best place in town for brisket, I'd be hard pressed to find many places throughout the State of Texas that have a better understanding on sausage than Smolik's. read more

We stopped here on our way back to Corpus from San Antonio. I ordered the ribs and brisket plate with macaroni and cheese and a side of potato salad. When I think of the flavors of Texas, this place hit the nail on the head, dry rub and all. My kids had the barbecue chicken plate with pinto beans and they devoured the chicken, but weren't overly enthusiastic about the beans. The service was sufficient, nothing spectacular, but all they have to do is drop off the food at the table since customers order from the window. They also had a two man band playing some music at a comfortable level. This is definitely a place i'll take my out-of-town guests. read more

Awesome freakin' BBQ! I have eaten BBQ all over the state and I'm pretty sure this place doesn't receive the credit it deserves. I went with a brisket sandwich and it was done to perfection. The sauce was some of the best I have had and it was one a toasted white bun. Pretty awesome! I asked for the broccoli and cheese because I didn't see mac and cheese on the menu. The lady told me "we don't have broccoli and cheese anymore, it got replaced by mac and cheese". Even better! Great lunch prices and amazing BBQ. Mathis is one of those towns that has only about 5000 people and if you aren't looking for it you will drive right passed it on 37 but I highly recommend you stop here next time you are driving through Mathis. read more

This place is an insult to barbecue. Did I really just have to get back in line to spend over $3 for pickles and onions? Seriously? Meat was nothing to claim pride in. Sides are so tiny, 4 bites if best in that tiny bowl. The only thing I'd really recommend was the braised cabbage but nake sure you get the bigger size. It was also just awkward to walk in and smell nothing. When I go to barbecue I want to smell what I'm eating right off the batt. Don't hide all your meat in the back and serve me on a plate. On our way back to Austin from Port A we decided to stop and try this BBQ spot. Wow! We were pleasantly surprised. The ribs were delicious, great BBQ sauce, moist chicken and variety of sides. BBQ sauce was good but maybe a little too sweet and they don't have it out anywhere so you're limited to what they give you when you order. So if you like lots of sauce be sure to ask for extra. I went here for the first time on Monday 8/4. They close at 2 pm on Monday , but we did not notice that or realize that upon entering. We arrived about 15-20 minutes before 2 pm. Needless to say, nobody was in the least bit welcoming. Tried to order several things that they said they were out of, and ended up asking " well what do you have?"(Still nobody bothered to say they were out of most things because they close at 2). Same thing with getting drinks, no ice in machine and no tea. We only realized they closed at two after we sat down to eat and someone else walked in to order and we overheard them tell that person they closed at 2 pm. I guess that was the reason for the attitude and poor customer service. This place was recommended to us, there were 4 of us initially, and then another 3 that came shortly after in our group, all had the same experience, and everybody said they would never go back. Sad what poor customer service does to a business. As far as I could tell, it was about 4-5 ladies in front along with a guy cutting meat on 8/4/14. Every time we come to town, we always make a point to buy beef ribs from Smoliks. They are so good, the best I've had in Texas and I've had some that are considered 'famous' yet I still prefer Smoliks beef ribs. They are tender, has just the right amount of seasoning and not too fatty or greasy. I personally like that one rib is huge, enough for 2 people maybe even a family of 4. Everything here is good, chicken fried steak, the sides and now they have a loaded potato with BBQ, seriously though! Yum, yum, yum! We stoppped here to grab a quick bite before hitting up some Jet ski's on Lake Corpus Christi. There wasn't alot of people there so I wasn't holding my breath for anything spectacular. I ordered a large chopped beef sandwich and fried okra. The bbq sauce had a good balance of sweet and savory and the beef was cooked perfectly. However, what really shined was the fried okra. I'm a regular at the downtown Smoliks and I can't say enough good things about the restaurant and the owner, Mike. On top of always being great food he always makes sure to come out and greet the customers. Today I witnessed something you just don't see every day. A man was in line to order his food, an older guy and he must have gotten too hot because he passed out right there in line. Mike comes out and helps the man to a table and brings him some water. He gets the mans order to go and then, he calls his wife to come follow him while he takes the man home in his own car. This is the level of service and care at Smoliks in Mathis Tx. OMG I've finally found someone that makes a ribeye better than I do. This place is amazing and the staff are extremely nice and very attentive. Thoroughly impressed for a restaurant I just happened to need gas and happened across it. They have jerky and cheeses and a full smokehouse menu as well as some baked sweets. The Chef is a super guy that is very proud of his product and after eating here I know why. I look forward to my next trip out this direction. read more
