Even though this place been around for a while this was my first time coming here for the so called brisket sandwich. The sandwich was real good with a good ample amount of sliced brisket. I would probably give this place 5 stars but i just have one concern. Even though it's during this times during the pandemic we went through the drive-thru. I must say I was disappointed in the amount of time it took me to get my sandwich. There was a total of 3 vehicles ahead of me and I know I stood in that drive-thru line for over 30 minutes. I will tolerate the longer times considering what we are going through but I'm sure they can do better than that. read more

1 lb of brisket was 1/3rd fat. Waited in line only to be told to get in another line for to go orders.

Service was EXCELLENT, food was amazing! We tried the brisket and ribs! A must try! The bbq sauce complimented the smokiness of the meats! The dining room was clean and so were the restrooms. The French silk pie and coconut pie were delish! Great place to stop if you happen to be driving through Mathis,TX. read more

Last week, my husband ordered a sliced brisket sandwich (marbled side) at the window of the downtown location. When he got home and opened it, it had a 1/2" slab of white fat and a little bit of fat. He didn't take it back because we live too far away. He was very disappointed. The sandwiches had always been good in the past. read more

Definitely five stars! Stopped here on the way back from the coast. We're glad that we did. I had the 1/2 chicken plate with 2 sides. Excellent all around and great service. We will be back. Highly recommend. read more

I was driving to Corpus Christi and was planning to stop by another BBQ joint in Three Rivers (Sowell's BBQ), and I can't find it. So I kept on driving and when I passed Mathis, I yelped for local restaurants and this place came out on top, so I decided to make a stop for lunch. I got myself the 3 meat place with two sides. Let's start with the two sides, potato salad is great, but the coleslaw is watery and tasted awful. The three meats: brisket is pretty good, I couldn't taste the jalapeno in the jalapeno sausage, although that could because they give me the wrong sausage, if that is the case, the sausage is above average. The best meat on the plate is the Chicken, it was falling off the bone and very tasty. Overall, good place to have lunch on your way to Corpus Christi or heading to San Antonio. read more

I'm doing the happy dance when I come here. It's always so good and affordable. It's been pretty consistent and I've really enjoyed the BBQ. I have yet to try something I didn't like. It just feels like good ol' Texas BBQ. read more

Came in for the BBQ! This is a convenient place to stop right off the highway, with ample parking, and fast service. They offer a full array of meat- sausages, fowl, beef, pork- you name it. The interior is made to look like a rustic barn setting. I got the brisket sandwich- which was piled high with a lean brisket. It had been smoked well, but was served with a pretty weak sauce. They could really step up their BBQ sauce game. They offer sweet tea, and all drinks come in to-go containers. Convenient if you're on the road, but Mother Nature will suffer. Sigh! The service was friendly, but slow. Prices are fair, considering how much meat you get! You get piles of meat. I pity the vegan who stumbles into this cathedral of meat. The restaurant also serves as a gift shop- need a cookbook written by the local church ladies or day old pastries? This place has 'em! They've got a curious collection of religious articles- crosses to hang on your wall, signs with Bible quotes on them. read more

Smolik's is probably best known for being a regular in the Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ joints in the world (meaning Texas). However, the accompanying bakery and meat shop should not be missed if you happen upon either location in tiny Mathis. I found the old world fruit kolaches to be very tasty, and depending on when you find your way to Smolik's, you will find an assortment of sausage and jerky options. If it is available, definitely take home some summer sausage and if you opt to eat in the restaurant, don't pass on the jalapeno cheddar sausage. While the upstart Butter's BBQ might be the best place in town for brisket, I'd be hard pressed to find many places throughout the State of Texas that have a better understanding on sausage than Smolik's. read more

Pretty good BBQ. The beef brisket was juicy and cooked well. The staff were friendly enough. The sides were average. The sauce was good but it needed a little spice, or maybe offer another sauce--a spicier one. But in saying that it was pretty delicious. read more

Awesome freakin' BBQ! I have eaten BBQ all over the state and I'm pretty sure this place doesn't receive the credit it deserves. I went with a brisket sandwich and it was done to perfection. The sauce was some of the best I have had and it was one a toasted white bun. Pretty awesome! I asked for the broccoli and cheese because I didn't see mac and cheese on the menu. The lady told me "we don't have broccoli and cheese anymore, it got replaced by mac and cheese". Even better! Great lunch prices and amazing BBQ. Mathis is one of those towns that has only about 5000 people and if you aren't looking for it you will drive right passed it on 37 but I highly recommend you stop here next time you are driving through Mathis. read more

We stopped here on our way back to Corpus from San Antonio. I ordered the ribs and brisket plate with macaroni and cheese and a side of potato salad. When I think of the flavors of Texas, this place hit the nail on the head, dry rub and all. My kids had the barbecue chicken plate with pinto beans and they devoured the chicken, but weren't overly enthusiastic about the beans. The service was sufficient, nothing spectacular, but all they have to do is drop off the food at the table since customers order from the window. They also had a two man band playing some music at a comfortable level. This is definitely a place i'll take my out-of-town guests. read more

I usually stop here for lunch when I travel through the area. I've been here a few other times & have enjoyed the BBQ chicken, brisket & pork chops. Today my meal wasn't what I expected. I tried the fried shrimp plate & was disappointed that frozen pre-battered shrimp was used. Next time, I'll just stick to the BBQ! read more

Unbelievably tasty Barbeque, their chicken fried steak is my vice. The selection of homemade pies and sweets is delicious. It is a nice hometown environment with a friendly wait staff. Strawberry lemonade and brisket makes a Saturday afternoon lunch complete. read more

Don't eat anywhere else in Mathis if you want meat! Try the chicken ranch salad. Smoked chicken pulled from the bone. Pork ribs and brisket are my favorite plate. read more

This place is an insult to barbecue. Did I really just have to get back in line to spend over $3 for pickles and onions? Seriously? Meat was nothing to claim pride in. Sides are so tiny, 4 bites if best in that tiny bowl. The only thing I'd really recommend was the braised cabbage but nake sure you get the bigger size. It was also just awkward to walk in and smell nothing. When I go to barbecue I want to smell what I'm eating right off the batt. Don't hide all your meat in the back and serve me on a plate. If you know and love real TX barbecue don't eat here you will be disappointed. read more

Clean, Friendly, GREAT BBQ! I drive my family of 4 30mins to Smoliks at least twice a month for their great BBQ! We are treated like fam and I never feel guilty about feeding my kids and hubby "take out" or questionable food from an unclean restaurant! We are customers for life! read more

On our way back to Austin from Port A we decided to stop and try this BBQ spot. Wow! We were pleasantly surprised. The ribs were delicious, great BBQ sauce, moist chicken and variety of sides. Green beans, pinto beans, fried okra made to order, braised cabbage all of which were outstanding. We will definitely stop here again. Service and staff were very friendly and checked on us to see if we needed anything. We especially loved the OGIT (old guy in training). read more

Very good food. Friendly staff. Got there 5 mins before closing and still got to eat and sit. Almost on par with Lockhart BBQ.

So far my favorite BBQ around Corpus and surrounding. Had brisket and a RIB. DELICIOUS. Will drive to eat.

Stopped here on our way back to Austin from Corpus Christi. Seemed like most of the town was there and for good reason. The food was very good. Brisket was tender and had great flavor. Sausage was also excellent. The potato salad was some of the best I've ever had. BBQ sauce was good but maybe a little too sweet and they don't have it out anywhere so you're limited to what they give you when you order. So if you like lots of sauce be sure to ask for extra. For an off the beaten path place it was very clean and had a good atmosphere. Wasn't the best BBQ I've had but it's definitely top 5 and definitely worth stopping on your way to or from Corpus. read more

Worst ever. Spent $30 on two meals and was served warned over food that was dry and old. Unbelievably bad and shockingly well reviewed!

Great bbq great service, brisket was extremely tender with good flavor and a very nice bark, sausage was well seasoned and had great smoke flavor. We were very impressed with everything including the beans, Cole slaw, onion rings, pie was all fantastic. read more

Great BBQ, definitely get the sausage, it is awesome.

I went here for the first time on Monday 8/4. They close at 2 pm on Monday , but we did not notice that or realize that upon entering. We arrived about 15-20 minutes before 2 pm. Needless to say, nobody was in the least bit welcoming. Tried to order several things that they said they were out of, and ended up asking " well what do you have?"(Still nobody bothered to say they were out of most things because they close at 2). Same thing with getting drinks, no ice in machine and no tea. We only realized they closed at two after we sat down to eat and someone else walked in to order and we overheard them tell that person they closed at 2 pm. I guess that was the reason for the attitude and poor customer service. This place was recommended to us, there were 4 of us initially, and then another 3 that came shortly after in our group, all had the same experience, and everybody said they would never go back. Sad what poor customer service does to a business. As far as I could tell, it was about 4-5 ladies in front along with a guy cutting meat on 8/4/14. All with the same sour, unprofessional attitude. read more

We stoppped here to grab a quick bite before hitting up some Jet ski's on Lake Corpus Christi. There wasn't alot of people there so I wasn't holding my breath for anything spectacular. I ordered a large chopped beef sandwich and fried okra. The bbq sauce had a good balance of sweet and savory and the beef was cooked perfectly. However, what really shined was the fried okra. It was probably some of the best I've ever had. I know it's not hard to have good okra but you can screw it up real bad too. If I find myself in Mathis I will be hitting up Smolik's again. read more

OMG I've finally found someone that makes a ribeye better than I do. This place is amazing and the staff are extremely nice and very attentive. Thoroughly impressed for a restaurant I just happened to need gas and happened across it. They have jerky and cheeses and a full smokehouse menu as well as some baked sweets. The Chef is a super guy that is very proud of his product and after eating here I know why. I look forward to my next trip out this direction. read more

Meh, not the best bbq I've had. The meat was dry, no real flavor, the cuts of brisket were a bit thick for my liking. The brisket sandwich was all bun with a few slices of meat. The ribs were one big rib with mostly fat on it. The staff was friendly but really didn't know the menu. Two meals $35+ read more

Every time we come to town, we always make a point to buy beef ribs from Smoliks. They are so good, the best I've had in Texas and I've had some that are considered 'famous' yet I still prefer Smoliks beef ribs. They are tender, has just the right amount of seasoning and not too fatty or greasy. I personally like that one rib is huge, enough for 2 people maybe even a family of 4. Everything here is good, chicken fried steak, the sides and now they have a loaded potato with BBQ, seriously though! Yum, yum, yum! Oh, if you plan to get beef ribs, go early bec they sometimes run out. read more

I'm a regular at the downtown Smoliks and I can't say enough good things about the restaurant and the owner, Mike. On top of always being great food he always makes sure to come out and greet the customers. Today I witnessed something you just don't see every day. A man was in line to order his food, an older guy and he must have gotten too hot because he passed out right there in line. Mike comes out and helps the man to a table and brings him some water. He gets the mans order to go and then, he calls his wife to come follow him while he takes the man home in his own car. This is the level of service and care at Smoliks in Mathis Tx. No place will ever compare. read more

This place has the best bbq around , I highly recommend the loaded baked potato with the chili on top , it's amazing!
