The food arrived about 15 minutes later and was perfect. It may have been the best shrimp Po boy I ever had. My son's burger was HUGE, and came exactly as ordered. Their fries were yummy too, and they weren't even the type I usually like. Definitely check them out. The only downside, like so much of Rockport, were limited hours. I recommend this business because everything I've gotten from this place is delicious. The calamari is the best I've ever had & so tender. The brisket you can get lean or marbled. The smell will lure you in-true Texas Bbq Smokey smell. With closing time in less than 2 hrs was not expecting to get lean brisket and had already anticipated cutting off the fat. What a nice surprise when the BBQ chef said he could try and he did-we got exactly what we wanted nice lean brisket with just a tad of the good smoked fat. We've been in the area for a couple of weeks and had not yet tried this barbecue place. We seem to hit it at an off time and never when they were open but we were so fortunate today that we were craving barbecue and found them open. Oh my gosh and we're so glad we did. The pictures say it all with the quantity of food that is being served for the price. We got a dinner for two with huge pork ribs perfectly smoked and 12 hand breaded fried shrimp along with two sides that were gigantic and all for less than $40. Clearly the meals could have accommodated four people and for a total of $40 you can't beat it. Fortunately for us we have plenty of leftovers tomorrow when it's supposed to rain all day! I hear the banana pudding is to die for and we certainly will try that next. Strictly a personal note for the negative reviews - has a long time and very faithful yelper I noticed at times that people who are not active yelpers and have very few reviews often only post when they have something negative to say. Several of the reviews for this restaurant have less than five reviews and many of them years old. It begs the question whether these are personal vendettas or something's just not fair in their evaluation. Only my opinion but wanted to still provide a fair assessment of the restaurant. read more

Back again to this restaurant.. this time I tried the seafood bomb... had to be the best seafood I have had in a long time. Everything was cooked to perfection and I even got it to go. The portions were plentiful and seasoned to make it even better. The order was ready when they promised and packed perfectly to make the short trip home. My wife and I were down in Rockport to see the whooping cranes. We took a ride on the Skimmer that turned me into a human popsicle. I was so cold to the bone when we docked, that I told my wife I didn't care where or what we ate as long as I was inside a warm building. Since we had done a few seafood places, even though she doesn't like seafood, she suggested that we eat barbecue at a place we saw on the way to Goose Island State Park. When we got there, it was closed. We decided to drive through Rockport and just find a place to eat. That's when we saw The Shack. It was surrounded by cars, which is usually a good sign, so in we went. The server was very attentive and friendly. She took our drink orders and gave us time to peruse the menu. As we glanced around the dining room we saw some ladies who had been on the birding cruise with us. I also saw two Texas game wardens eating at another table. I figured game wardens probably knew where to eat. My wife order a barbecue beef sandwich of some kind. All I know is that she said it was really good. I passed on the barbecue when I saw fried shrimp on the menu. They give you 10 HUGE fried shrimp, steak fries, and coleslaw for only $13.00. The shrimp were perfectly cooked. I was in heaven. My 5 star rating is based on their BBQ. I went in and picked up takeout. Ordered 1lb of the marbled brisket, 1 lb of sausage, 1/2 lb of chopped brisket and pinto beans. This is not just the best BBQ in Rockport, but some of the best I have had in Texas. The Brisket was very tender with a great smoke ring and crust. The chopped brisket was moist with a great smoked taste and slightly burnt in a good way, such as when you order burnt ends. The sausage came sliced and was very juicy. I am not a person who enjoys left overs, but there was so much in the order I was able to make sausage, potato, egg, and cheese tacos for breakfast. For dinner I used the left over chopped brisket and prepared some of the best Chopped Brisket nachos I have ever had. The staff were very friendly and the Rockport community showed their kindness. When I went in to place my order, I saw two County Sheriffs having lunch. I asked the cashier if I could have their check, as I appreciate 1st responders. I passed this place up the first time. It's a large metal building quite close the road. There's not much room to park street side. But there are other parking options. Decor is sparse and didn't meet what I would think of as BBQ, more cowboy picnic. I had the three meat combo with brisket, pork loin and ribs. The ribs and loin had a delicious smoky flavor and you could see the pink smoke ring in the meat. It was all very tender and oh so very tasty. I was a bit shocked with the beans, but I have to remember this is Texas BBQ so the beans are different. The slaw was very good. Price was good. I'll be back. I enjoyed it all. read more

This place is pretty small but they do their best to try to accommodate everyone during busy times, moving tables around and all. There's not much to the atmosphere; it's pretty basic. I figured from the whining in other reviews that they serve East Texas barbecue - the kind best doused in sauce and served atop something else. So I ordered a loaded baked potato. The waiter brought me a baked potato with a mound of chopped brisket soaked in barbecue sauce on top. It was pretty good, but what was odd was that all the rest of the toppings were on the side - a few packets of butter, a tube of sour cream, a container of cheese, and a container of bacon bits. I call it a do-it-yourself loaded baked potato. The only downside is that the cheese and butter aren't melted by the potato. read more

Six tired and hungry adults decided to try this tiny restaurant on a Sunday at noon. The place is small, only about 12 tables, but we were pleasantly surprised at the food and service. We ordered a cheeseburger with fries, shrimp basket with potato salad, loaded baked potato, sausage sandwich with pinto beans, chopped brisket sandwich with fries and a shrimp platter with coleslaw and pinto beans. Everything was hot, fresh and delicious; portions are large and the waitress was very efficient and friendly. Our only gripe is they were out of banana pudding!
