If you were looking for some barbecue stop scrolling. We were in town on other business and decided to find a barbecue joint nearby. We hadn't heard of this place at all. We had our dog with us so we went through the drive-through so I can't say a lot about the inside, but the outside was pretty normal. The normality stopped when we got our order. The bag seemed like it weighed 8 pounds and all we ordered was a two meat plate and a chopped beef sandwich. The two meat plate had beef, ribs, and brisket and we got three sides with it, which were potato salad, coleslaw, and pinto beans. I really liked the coleslaw. It had apples in it, which was rare, but it tasted pretty good. The potato salad was on point as well as the pinto beans. The brisket was fall apart, tender, and the beef ribs had really good flavor. Now the chopped beef sandwich really took us back. It was huge. Everything tasted great. It'd been a good long time since we'd been to Howard's. When we both worked downtown, we made a point of going a couple times a month. Since they're closed on weekends, getting some of their food has been nigh impossible. So we had a day we needed to take care of some business and made a point of heading to Howard's. It wasn't uber busy a little after 1 on this particular day. We got our food in good time, not a lot of standing around waiting IOW. Put our sides on our plates and found our seats. What was off-putting is that the meats just didn't have a distinguishing character is once did. Smoke? Tender? Fall-apart? Anything????? Nope, it was just OK. A little chewy and just not that flavorful. The sides were fine, we like their potato salad better than most other places locally. But the meat was just uninspiring and TBH, not something we'd "pencil in" on our calendars for. I hope it's not the general trend for the place...it's been around for such a long time. read more

This is our go to barbecue restaurant in Corpus. My husband and I have been trying all of the suggested establishments, the popular and well-known places. We were disappointed. We found Howard's one afternoon when we looked up restaurants and were trying to find a new place. Howard's is phenomenal. Their staff is kind and make you feel at home. Their food is WONDERFUL. Looked this place up on Yelp, and saw it had semi-decent reviews. Definitely would not recommend this place to ANYONE. I do not know if this place has gone down over the years... but YIKES. The salad bar had flies and other bugs flying around it, plus the food looked like it had been left out for... days? We got the pork ribs and the brisket. The ribs had no flavor, they were tough, and was a huge let down. The brisket again had no flavor, no color, was just a grey, pale, slab of meat, couldn't even really call this Texas barbecue. I spent $30, which was $30 down the drain. If you're looking for a cafeteria style place to eat... or something that resembles your local nursing home food, this would be the place to try. read more

Available as plates, sandwiches, and unique "tacos". And some quite large baked potatoes went by as we made our decisions. Everything is ready by the time you reach the end of the counter and pay. Sauce provided from behind the counter was quite sweet. All sides-both cold and hot-are self-serve from a long salad bar set up in the dining area. Our meal choice was a 3-meat platter, with Pork loin, sausage, and turkey. Here was our feelings on our meal this visit. Sausage: earns an A for the perfect amount of peppery bite Turkey: A+ for smokey flavor, moist with no sauce needed Pork Loin: overly dry, decent smoke ring. Would have been better fresher. Howard's BBQ has been around for quite a while; must be from the personal, friendly service, limitless sides bar and tea, and their decent prices. The bbq ... well, it's alright. I ordered a brisket and sausage plate (my go to for considering a place). I also got a bowl of beans and some potato salad. They have LOTS of other sides options, though. I asked if they made their sausage in-house (another review consideration) and was told it's V&V's - which, I agree, is so good that quite a few bbq joints opt to serve it vice make their own. The brisket was tender and moist - I'd asked for it to be cut from the point. But, it lacked the smokiness you'd expect from a "seasoned" bbq place and it had a slight ... cleanser? taste. I don't know if it was from the cutting board or utensils or what, but it was little off-putting. It was made better by their bbq sauce which, itself, is quite good. The sausage, as expected, was excellent but that's more to V&V than Howard's. The potato salad and beans were both quite good and flavorful. Prices, as mentioned, are respectable and meat portions were generous. The place is clean and stayed very busy. I'm sure the brisket "flavor" faux pas was just a fluke - it was too busy to try and correct it. It would be worth another try sometime. read more

The real deal for some good down home Texas barbecue. Frequented by many locals, this is a hidden gem. They have a large variety of delicious smoked meats. You get a tray with your main dish and then get to pick any and all the sides you want, which are all served buffet style. The Mac n cheese is extra, but so worth it. I'm not a huge mac and cheese fan but this was the best I've ever had! The owners/workers are so friendly and knowledgeable about their product. Everything was so delicious and our whole party of 6 was fully satisfied and left happy and full. Not a single complaint to mention. I would be there at least every week if I lived in the area, but I guess I'll just have to settle for visiting each time I'm in town. read more

In checking out Howard's we felt it was average/below average bbq. We had the three meat with sliced brisket, sausage, and beef ribs with beans. The sliced brisket was tender but lacked that great bbq taste and flavor. It had very little if any seasoning. The same was with the beef ribs. The sausage was great since it was V & V. The sauce just didn't have that great bbq kick. The beans were just average. If you're in a rush and nearby get the sausage if you're wanting bbq. The atmosphere was great with friendly workers. Yay! We have found our BBQ place in Corpus... My hubby & I are big Rudy's fans from San Antonio but the Rudy's here just didn't seem to be the same... We had been to Bill Miller's and a couple of other places but no place really stood out - until Howard's! The meat is phenomenal - you get a LOT of it and there is a "sides" bar... in other words, you don't have to pick & choose 1 or 2 sides, as there is a bar with multiples to choose from, including salad. I'm here on business and as most know I'm a huge fan of Risky's Barbque in Fort Worth so I thought I'd try out Howard's and see how they measured up. Ordered the 3 meat plate so I could get sampling of my favorite 3. Beef ribs, pork ribs, and brisket. The Beef ribs were so tender and flavorful. I'd venture to say they may even taste a little better than Riskys..... However Riskys is all you can eat for 12.99 and that hard to beat even with a few more seasonings. The Pork ribs were moist, tender and delicious as was the brisket. Staff were all very friendly and I enjoyed my visit. Downfall..... Pecan pie tasted like it came from a box. `Went though the Drive-Thru window and ordered sliced beef sandwich, with sauce, onion, no pickle and a small coke. Very little sauce, got no onion, and no pickle. Total $8.97 ---wow Besides the price, (and no onion) the biggest problem is their brisket is very dry. You can also look at any picture hereon and see very little or no smoke ring on the meat. Because it's so dry I am assuming they are buying very cheap "select" brisket, and cooking it in an oven and finishing it quickly on a grill, it has definitely not spent any reasonable amount of time in a proper pit. I'm kind of a regular here... I'm picky about my BBQ, I dabbled in BBQ judging. Howard's is the real deal. Moist, tender brisket--consistently! Great sausage, great chicken, great pork and beef ribs. Some of the time, the ribs are great; most of the time, they are phenomenal. There is usually a line around lunch time, about a 10 minute wait on really busy days. Most of the time you'll wait less than 5 minutes. Be thinking about what you want before you reach the front of the line and help everyone out:) In Corpus, their BBQ is second to none. (yes, I've tried 'em all) It is well worth any wait you may have. Donna will come around to refill drinks, clear your table and tell you a joke--sometimes you gotta ask for the joke. Tip her.
