Ordered pizza and waited 45 minutes for 1/2 order appetizer [we ordered a full] another 10 when a small pizza was brought out saying a wrong name. When we said it was not our order another table said that was their order and they were wonder why they got a large pizza but dug in and had 1/2 gone before they were questioned. This would be a great place if they offered more than the weird toppings. Also, the chairs are really hard and uncomfortable. The staff is nice but wait times for your food and then for your bill is excruciating. If you like "modern" toppings, you might like this place. I appreciate your response...those are a lot of toppings...however, waiting more than 40 minutes for a pizza that has a rather nondescript chewy texture with too chunky garlicky sauce on chairs that people have been sitting on for thousands of years (therefore making them extremely hard on most everybody's sensitive parts) and then waiting for the check when they aren't that busy making for a long and not that satisfying dinner is not my idea of the best pizza around. It pains me to write this review because this used to be my favorite pizza place in Renton and I recommended it to many friends and family over the last few years. This place has become so unorganized and the quality has dropped so far that no I don't think I'll be a customer of Smoking Monkey ever again. There has been an extreme amount of employee overturn over the past 18 months and with each new crew things seem to get worse and worse. The last 3 times I have ordered food from here the quality has gone down and each order has been messed up in some capacity. Tonight was the tipping point... I came in and was half way greeted by a server. I told her I was going to sit at the bar and wanted to have a beer and get some food to go. She gave me a menu and I sat there for 10+ minutes and was ignored. I knew what I wanted to order so I closed my menu. The server came by and took the menu but didn't ask me for my order. Another 5 min goes by and someone finally asks me for my order. I ordered a beer, a 10" Dr Beverly, and a full order or cauliflower. My beer is only about 2/3 full and has a ton of foam with it. I wait roughly an hour for my food and am pretty annoyed by the time I get it so I pay my bill and head home. I get home and open what I expected to be fried cauliflower and it's chicken alfredo...I call the restaurant immediately to report the issue. They say they are closing in 15 min but I can come pick up a new order of cauliflower but they'll have to charge me for the alfredo because they can't take it back. I tell them that's BS and I want what I ordered. They give in and tell me I could come pick up a new order of cauliflower if I can get there before they close. Now I have a cold pizza sitting at home since I had to drive back down to get it the cauliflower... This is so disappointing and hopefully I can find a new local pizza spot soon... read more

Literally a great pizza spot. However there are some cons. The inside is super small and a little uncomfortable. The salads are amazing and I could bath In the lemon dressing. While visiting the area for business we settled on a funky little pizza place. The Monkey is just that, funky. The owners must be Star Trek fans. I picked up a pizza a couple of days ago and asked for lite sauce. They said no problem and when I received it there was lite sauce. So today I decided to order through their website and I asked for lite sauce. While we were waiting for the pizza we paid for it and on the receipt it said lite sauce. We got our pizza and went all the way home. When we get home, we noticed the pizza was drenched with sauce. I was unable to eat it even though I was hungry. My brother ate a couple of slices. He didn't like it either, but was hungry. I called the restaurant which I have now ordered and paid for twice in one week. You would think a new customer would be good. I explained to the lady on the phone about our pizza having way too much sauce for a lite sauce pizza. She justified it by saying she can't control the kitchen. The people in the back she said all have a different idea of lite sauce. She was very rude and unprofessional. Rather than offering to give me a pizza replacement for a future visit, she said all she could do was make another one right away. Ok. I love this pizzeria. Staff has always been very nice with delivery. The pizza is great and the wings were good too. The meatballs... not so much. I think they fried them and fried them a bit too long which created a hard texture on the outside which is a bummer because the sauce with the not hard part of the meatball was good. Smoking Monkey is the only place I know in Renton that sells pizza by the slice. For under $10 you can get 2 large slices of pepperoni and a can of coke. The pizza is pretty good. The slices are reheated when you order so the crust is quite crispy and crunchy and sometimes slightly burnt, which I kind of like. My critique of the pizza is that crust is that It lacks that chewy, springy texture to go with the crispiness. I really like the little pepperoni pieces they use that curl up into tiny cups. Lot's of interesting pizzas with interesting names available, but I've only had pepperoni. In addition to pizza, they also have Stromboli which is meat and cheese rolled and baked in dough. It's huge and comes with marinara sauce for dipping. I love the interior with fun art, especially the paintings of the smoking space monkeys. There always seems to be plenty of tables, even during the lunch rush. The staff here is great too. read more

One of the restaurants and storefronts keeping downtown Renton really cool. This place deserves to be recognized! They have decent classic pizzas, but their signature pizzas are where it's at. The Goatsmary is my very favorite. Ask to have coppa or salami added (depending on what's in) for a delightfully savory boost. Do be aware that they serve a limited selection of pizzas by the slice during lunch hour, so if you're craving a signature pizza before dinnertime, you'll have to order a whole pizza - what a shame. ;) I can usually find a few coworkers to go in on one with me. Also - their cauliflower bites. If you don't like cauli, this appetizer may make a believer out of you. It's fried to a dark and crispy color and SO well seasoned that it's completely snackable on its own, but the sauce, a cayenne aioli, really takes it to the next level. The pizza is definitely enough to satiate me, but I never ever pass up the chance to order the cauli bites while I'm at it. If you get a chance to dine in, take a few minutes to appreciate the lovingly-curated B-movie artwork. It's hilarious, charming, and absolutely showcases the heart of Smoking Monkey. read more

When you write more than 600 reviews, a few things happen. You make people laugh, you make people smile and you piss people off! Personally, I don't care, I write to recount my experience and inform people, good or bad, and those who are salty about it, can eat at Dicks! (New location now open in Kent). The one thing that still surprises me if the amount of requests I get to review a place. Typically, I review a place in about a week, so if there is no review, I probably haven't been there. The other possibility is, I'm not interested. I tend to stay away from fast food and major chain reviews unless they are new to town or I have a really bad experience or great one. I don't think I have had more requests for any other business than Smoking Monkey. From the moment they opened, my inbox was flooded with encouragement and requests. I looked at the website and just had a funny feeling that the place would not be for me. The menu lacked common staples of a pizzeria and appeared to be my gourmet or nouveau. Years later here I am and this is my review. I was greeted with a very warm welcome, and hello from one of the cooks. I felt like I had arrived at a friends house, but the feeling was short lived. Minutes later, a light headed black female greeted me and couldn't even form a sentence without appearing to be on the verge of a seizure. She recommended the buffet, told me to grab a seat, get started eating and should would be right with me. The salad bar was fresh, but the selection of items was far too few for a pizza place. It was about the saddest salad bar I ever saw! However, the homemade dressing was delicious and the vegetables could not have been crunchier. The big disappointment was the pizza. Pictures online showed slices with 30 pieces of pepperoni on them, yet today, each slice had a max of 4 pieces. No pizza had more than a single meat topping and the fact that the place was empty proved to me that no one was impressed with value, price or flavor of the lunch special. I ate my salad and two slices of pizza and wondered what happened to my server. I was thirsty and hadn't received my beverage and also curious if I should expect a better selection of pizza. I got my beverage and ate two more slices of pizza as it was obvious there was no way there were putting anything else out as no one was there to eat it. In the end, the service was terrible, and slow. This is generally inexcusable, but in a scenario with no one in the restaurant, it's flat out offensive. The price was too much. I had 4 small slices of pizza and a tiny salad. According to the menu, that would have been $9, not the $13 I paid for the buffet. And despite the fresh flavors, nothing was worth the price even if the service was better. I understand food cost, but a lunch special is the best way to earn business. I have had business owners tell me they lose money at lunch in order to win customers and not have to advertise. I suspect a full pizza may have more toppings, but I would not risk returning, recommending or rewarding this place. If they closed tomorrow, I don't think they would be missed. This monkey is smoking something, and it's keeping him or her from offering a respectable meal in what might be considered a low income area. read more

And until this past year, I would have given 5 stars all around, then there was a giant turnover in staff and the place has gone downhill. Orders are forgotten, service is slow. It's very disappointing. But that can easily be remedied, so I'd be willing to come back if there are just a few changes on the staffing end. read more

I love their pizzas here! You can really tell the difference between their pizza and Papa John's or Dominos. The only issue I have is they don't have any specials running. I've ordered from here at least five times and have asked. It would be nice if they ran a special once in awhile, because their pizzas are pricey. From the outside this place doesn't look like it is going to be that great, but once in, it looks very cozy, and inviting! The pizzas in here are delicious, and they use fresh ingredients. Their prices are very reasonable, and you will not be disappointed! We ordered a half vegetarian and half smoked monkey with mushrooms. The pizza crust was well cooked, flaky, crunchy and soft. This was typical of a crust that you would expect in the northeast. As far as the flavor of the smoked mozzarella, I wasn't a big fan. The veggie pizza didn't have a sauce but rather a dressing of olive oil; we knew this when we ordered. All in all, it was a good pizza and very unique so +1 star for that. Service was kind and attentive. Maybe next time we will try another flavor/topping combination and gelato! read more
