I prefer darker beers and and loved the stout on nitro but I have to say a close second was the chili ale because it was very unusual, and DELICIOUS! I have been going to this brewery since it opened and the owners have been amazingly friendly and personable since day one. They always take the time to make sure they greet everyone, even when they're busy. It's obvious they take a lot of pride in their establishment and have truly made their mark in our small town. My absolute favorite beer of all time is created by his husband and wife team. It's their Chili Ale and it's a seasonal brew. It is the most flavorful, satisfying ale I've ever had. We buy it by the growler and even take it to add to our meats we smoke. Their setup is beautiful, made out of hand cut wood, I'm guessing by the owner himself. The old time photos on the wall are such a unique touch. It is always clean and such a nice get away for a drink or two. Our son loves their ginger ale which the owner serves him in his own little mug which makes him feel so special. It's delicious ginger ale too I may add. The beer selection has a great variety from IPAs, Stouts, Hefeweizen, Cream Ale. There really is something for everyone. You can get a small taster for fee to see if it's something you like. I'm always up for trying something new! I was noticing a post below, and I am truly shocked at the nature of it. I truly believe 100% of breweries are passionate and proud of their creations, but in the end they are still a business and businesses need to make money to keep their dream going. I have known the owners of this brewery and cannot even fathom anything less than professional behavior. Mike and Natalie are the real deal! So happy we stumbled upon this location while adventuring out in Ramona. Everything is made in house with amazing ingredients. Come for the beer, stay for the company. Such a welcoming and special place. I can't wait to come back up here again so we can stop here. Loved the Bellona red ale and their michelada which had Anaheim chili beer (yum!) Honestly, it's the best Michelada I've ever had. Full of flavor, not watery and does skip on the heat! I'm not an avid beer drinker (I tend to go for wine), but this place was a lot of fun. I got a beer flight with quite a range of beers and all of them were so good! My visit was way overdue. I really want to go back and get a Michelada. But on my most recent visit, I got a flight of beers. I could choose any, so I went with the smoked peanut butter ale, blonde ale, chili ale, kumquat wheat, passion fruit wit, and American stout on nitro. They also had ginger soda and my friend got a ginger soda float which I tried and it was delicious! Such a fun place. I will definitely have to stop back in. read more

We were finally able to find a free Saturday to drive out to Ramona, where we visited Smoking Cannon and ChuckAlek Independent Brewing, and to Julian, where we visited Nickel Brewing Company. (Thanks for driving, Sarah!) It is an easy enough drive, and parts of it are quite pretty. We arrived at Smoking Cannon just as they were opening up, so we were the first customers. The brewer was on the bar, and while he is a naturally quiet sort of fellow, he was willing to talk a bit about the beers and the theme of the place. He is a Civil War enthusiast who used to make working model cannons, so there are Civil War photos and books all around the place, and a few of his small cannons, too. The environment is comfortable and interesting, and there is a lot of seating at a long high table down the middle of the room and at counters on the sides of the rooms. There were nine beers on the board, and I got a flight of six. I haven't seen taster glasses like these before. I'm not sure they are any better than the typical ones, but they are at least unique. A few other customers trickled in as we were finishing up, and we heard the brewer's wife (clearly the outgoing one in the family) chatting with other patrons. They were regularly winning homebrew prizes, so they decided to open a brewery. It strikes me that they haven't quite outgrown their homebrew roots yet, but that over time the beer will become quite good here. One thing that may slow their evolution is the limited flow of customers in this small, isolated town. Do drop in if you are passing through Ramona. read more

So glad Cesar and I stopped here. While I didn't get the bartenders name that helped us out she definitely provided great service. We had told her we came from LA County and she recommended so many places for us specifically in the Julian area. I believe the artist performing, his name is Vic, asked our preference in music and played a couple hits as well. Cesar got juniper flats and I got the Walker beer. 10/10 recommend! read more

This brewery has it all! It's a great place to stop off on you way home from exploring some of the fun out towards Julian. They don't serve food, but you are allowed to bring food in or have it brought to you. There is a delicious Mexican restaurant next door. That was real convenient! Very nice layout inside with a Civil War theme. Old time photos on the walls and the brews being named after canons lend to this creative touch. Super friendly and welcoming staff and customers. The regulars there love to chat with you about their quaint little (but not so little town) They have games to play for both young and old and Natallie (the female owner) is even known to sit down and color with the kids. Speaking of kids... There is craft ginger beer and root beer that she makes. Oh, and coffee on nitro too. So even those who don't drink can get something yummy. My girlfriend and I have been going here since they started.The owners are always happy to see us walk through the door. We have our favorite beers but love trying their new creations like the German Chocolate Stout. My favorite is their Hef and IPA. We travel and visit many breweries but this place feels like home and we'll keep coming back. I don't know what that one reviewer's problem was, maybe she was having a bad day, but I can say with certainty that the owners would not have treated a customer that way. Carding patrons is the law, and free tasters is a courtesy of the brewery as some choose to charge for any taste, regardless of size. I highly recommend coming in for an drink or two. They are not your ordinary place because they treat you like family and friends and they don't mind if you bring in your own food to eat. There is a really good Mexican restaurant next door that will deliver their food to you if you want. We enjoyed our lunch and a flight. We absolutely love this place! It's an amazing place to grab a beer while enjoying some time with your family. The owner's Natalie and Mike were gracious enough to allow us to throw my husband's 30th birthday surprise party here and we were so thankful and happy we did! My husband and I went in last night for the first time and had such a great experience! They offer a wide and unique selection of delicious beers and there really is something for everyone including the kiddos! ‍‍‍ My husband enjoyed the craft beers which they pride on using the most natural ingredients they can while I enjoyed their homemade nitro cold brew which was delicious! The owner even told me the story behind the coffee beans they buy which are all fair trade. For the kids, or non beer drinkers such as I, they even keep on tap a homemade ginger beer (I recommend getting a growler of this and taking it home to make some amazing moscow mules) and also homemade root beer! You can also make anything on the menu into a float! (Great for hot days or dessert) Speaking of food, they do offer some snacks such as chips or you can bring in your own food! I would suggest ordering "to go" from Marinade on Main and then walking over to the brewery. They can also accommodate large parties and can be rented for private events. I hate knocking small breweries because they all have potential... but we like to give our money to damned good beer and friendly folks, and we didn't run into either here. Pros? Two of the beers they had were worth drinking a pint of, and I'm sure others would be enjoyed by folks with a different palate than us The environment smells nice... like fresh cut wood Clean restroom Homemade ginger ale and root beer for non drinkers Cons? The beertender carded us after we had already had some beer... claiming she thought she had seen us there yesterday. Our impression of the samples (the tasters are in thimble-sized plastic containers) and the female beertender/ beermaker wasn't very good... we both didn't like the first 2 samples we tried... so we both asked to try 1 more, which ended up with the lady saying that we should've just done a sampler cause "that's the point!" We told her that we'd rather have one pint of something we really enjoy versus 6 small glasses of beers we don't really like... When her next few sentences showed she was still clearly upset by this, perhaps that's when we should've walked out? Gone to one of the hundreds of other breweries within an hour drive? But we wanted to give the place a chance. Luckily, the next beer my fiance sampled he enjoyed enough to get a pint, and I went with the one I had tried second that was drinkable (the lack of carbonation was very disappointing). So even though we spent $12 for two pints versus the $10 if we'd gotten the biggest sampler they offered... we were treated as if we were somehow cheating the establishment. Long story short: We simply cannot understand why a place that was mostly empty (there were 6 other customers), with no line behind us, would mind giving out half a dozen thimble sized samples to help two customers choose a beer to enjoy. 99.9% of places hand out huge splashes and are excited to match the beer to the customer. read more

The Parrot IPA was incredible. It was fresh, with a balanced portion of Hops to soothe the palate. Mike was more than willing to show the inner workings of his brewery. They do everything in house and the service is incredible. I was considering having kegs from larger SD breweries (Green Flash, Ballast Point, Alpine) for my wedding, but Smoking Cannon made me change my mind. Unlike more commercialized beers, SC provided beers with layered profile notes that reflect the care and attentiveness that small-batch brewing requires. First time checking this new brewery out. A lot bigger inside then I thought it was gonna be. Staff was friendly and attentive. Had a Smoked Peanut Butter Stout and an American IPA. Both were very good. We were walking down Main for Ramona American Graffiti so my wife and I had our 7 year old with us. Was a family friendly environment. They have homemade root beer on tap, popcorn maker and some chips and nacho cheese. Had some games too so my son picked dominos. We will definitely be back. read more

BEST DAMN MICHELADA. PERIOD. Natalie is an amazing Hostess and I'll be returning just for her hospitality. She is informative, attentive, and loves to showcase the ingredients in the beers. Which were executed very well with clean and intentional flavors and aromas. The Chile Ale was fantastic! The aroma and taste of peppers are there, but without any of the heat. The American Stout had a round body with a dry finish, just the refreshing break from all the pastry-loaded "stouts" saturating the market these days. The aesthetic is simple but rich in detail. Well this was an unexpected find. We sampled all 9 of the beers they had available and were not disappointed with any of them. We are very picky our beers and have tried most of breweries in San Diego. There are usually a few at each brewery we don't really care for but not here. Let me elaborate. Their IPA, called Parrott is just one of the best IPAs we've ever had, and we've had at least 100 different variations. Think major flowery hops that I can taste even before the liquid hits my mouth. It's smells great. There's a slight bitter finish but not offensive. I rate it 4.5 out of 5. I would love to be able to buy this in a 6 pack. They had a few flavored beers (a vanilla cream, a pumpkin, a peanut butter, and a German chocolate cake). We normally steer clear of "flavored" beers as they taste artificial. But not these. I wouldn't mind drinking any of them again. read more
