It might be that we had extra heightened expectations from our first encounter with this place, which was at a townhall where they were the caterers. The shredded pork and chicken was so tender and the peach cobbler dessert was delicious. Perhaps we forgot to take into account that this was a free meal on a empty stomach at the time. Fast track to our first visit to the actual location - this was one of the few places I didn't bother to study (searched just to make sure I wasn't going when closed) before driving right in. We were pleased to see a drive-thru option for those who are cautious of crowds as this restaurant is always full of cars. The staff who took our order was very courteous and didn't mind reciting the list of sandwiches and all the side menus - twice. As a place that likely has many regulars (judging from our neighbors who eat here almost every other day), I was already prepared to hear in their voice some dose of "annoyance" since we were asking menu questions that frankly, their typical audience wouldn't ever ask. However, I couldn't find anything other than a friendly attitude from start to finish. Frankly, this had large part in full stars to this experience alone. As for the actual food, while I was a bit disappointed in my BBQ sandwich, there was about 4 hour period where the food cooled. I'm going to blame myself for not eating it in time. The parents were okay with the prime rib sandwich and left me all but one corn nugget and 2 pieces of mac n' cheese. Hence, the "okay" wasn't very convincing. While I can't imagine coming here for multiple days in a week, but perhaps enough for them us to order in the future like a regular soon. Fun fact: Despite a locally run place, they have their own branded BBQ sauce that's sealed like any other fast food chain. How cool! read more

Granted, I had their fried shrimp which may not be most representative of their BBQ but it seemed like it was straight out of a freezer bag, probably pre-breaded, and fried too long: tough, not tender, tiny little shrimp. The fried okra I got as my side were slightly better. I did try their BBQ sauces with the fried shrimp and those were pretty good. Some people would say "well, why even get fried shrimp at a BBQ place?" and I'd respond "why do they HAVE fried shrimp if it's not any good?". Maybe their storied BBQ pork is indeed better, but there should not be dishes due to a lack of quality to avoid at a restaurant which prides itself on a supposed farm-to-table ethos, either. The service was haphazard, I had to go and find my waitress to get my check. The interior is country charm but a bit overdone--it's a large restaurant and spacious interior and yet they seem determined to crowd it in every way possible. I like country, down-home, places but this feels like they're trying way too hard at that ambience. Stopped in for lunch at the Smokin Pig Restaurant in Bowdon GA. While on an antiquing adventure. Had quite a few trucks out front so we thought it could be good. The food was very good. I had the Hamburger Steak and Mushroom Gravy with a side of yummy Potato Salad and really good Mac and Cheese. $9.95. My wife had the Chopped BBQ Chicken Salad that was piled up with tasty BBQ Chicken. $10.95. Service was prompt and friendly. Servings were plentiful. Dessert menu looked good but we were stuffed. The ambience is of a typical small town Cafe - BBQ joint. They were doing a brisk sit down and take out business! The place was very clean including the restrooms. The prices were very reasonable. They had a full menu of BBQ as well as Steaks and other items. Parking was just out front. We will definitely stop here again! Very nice! read more

I tried to get lunch here today at the drive-through, but left without any food. Nobody would take my order nor acknowledge that I was even there. At least two persons saw me. One was playing on her phone, and the other seemed to be trying to hide. It was a little after 11AM and they were not busy yet. After a few minutes, I left. I was very impressed by this family-run restaurant, because they pay attention to all the tiny details - from the bathrooms to the lighting to the condiments - and the food was delicious. Let's start with the service: we found them to be very friendly and willing to take time to explain the menu, and to show us our options. We were helped by three people: the owner, our server, and a young woman who delivered the food, and all three were attentive, without hovering. The food itself was very yummy, and tasted fresh and perfectly seasoned. We ordered the BBQ Platter and the Chicken Fried Steak, and both were delicious. Nothing was greasy or dry, and we found the BBQ to be moist and tender, and the steak to have the perfect amount of breading. The sides we ordered were Coleslaw, Baked Beans and Mac & Cheese, and all three were excellent. The baked beans come with a touch of pineapple, which was nice, the coleslaw did not contain mayonnaise, (which I'm used to), but it was still REALLY good, and the Mac & Cheese was surprisingly light and fluffy, and full of flavor. (I'm used to having it served very dense and usually with much more oil.) So this was a very refreshing change of pace, but quite welcome. Also, deserving special mention is the gravy which was SOOO good. I never do this, but even after I had finished my Chicken Fried Steak, I had some gravy just by itself, and it was just perfect. (And believe me, I'm not someone who would normally just eat gravy by itself.) Afterward, we ordered a slice of the Pecan Pie, (with a side of ice cream), and it was pretty good. It was light and easy to slice, as compared to some I had last week by a company which supposedly specialized in it, but made it so dense that it was like cutting through cold caramel with a fork. So this was definitely a huge improvement, but I think I'm more of a Brownie guy than a pecan person. As far as the restaurant itself, it was very clean, well-lit, and the bathroom was kept up quite nicely. (It looked like something you'd see in a nice country, home, more than in a business.) The decor shows nice personalized touches that you'd expect to see in a non-corporate restaurant, such as framed news clippings of local athletes, and other memorabilia which how that this restaurant has genuine ties to the community. The kitchen looked brand-new, (which it turns out it was), and it was very bright and clean inside. I stopped to tell the chef how much we enjoyed our meals, and he was friendly enough to ask what we ordered, and was nice enough to take a minute to talk. The bottle of BBQ Sauce on the table was clean, and didn't have the usual greasy streaks that are common in so many restaurants. [My only minor complaint is that I hope they add Tabasco to their list of available hot sauces.] All in all, this was a great experience, and we plan to visit again and again. Which is why I'm baffled by a couple of the reviews I saw that rate them with a on or two-star rating -- particularly when it comes to the seasoning. The person who called the food "BLAND" was obviously not talking about the meal I had, which had seasoning which was spot-on. And, as mentioned above, our experience with staff was very attentive, even on a Saturday Night. Nobody was rushed or hurried, and all the patrons seemed to be getting their food in a timely manner. So, Smokin' Pig will definitely be seeing us again, because they earned it. read more

They have great BBQ, but everything else needs help. The food is BLAND. The catfish has a great crispy breading but ZERO seasoning. The Mac and Cheese needs serious help. Bland and runny. We got there and were immediately greeted by friendly faces. The atmosphere was laid back and the environment seemed very clean. We had read reviews online prior to trying this establishment and were pleased to see it received a 4.6 out of 5 and went in with high expectations. However, it went downhill quickly. We eventually placed our orders and received our food and were delighted how tasty it was and how large the portions were. Then our waitress seemed to disappear. All of our drinks got low. My nana needed sour cream but had to deal without any. Then we got ready for dessert - still no waitress. We waited another 10 minutes (probably 25-30 minutes total) and she never showed back up. Then suddenly a guy came by a table near ours and we asked him to please send our waitress our way. A couple of minutes later she showed up at a different table nearby and we tried to get her attention but she walked off. We got up and went to the cashier, paid (did NOT tip) and left immediately. We will not be back. The food was wonderful but the service was VERY POOR.
