What does that mean...hard to know, but at the same time, it's nearly always easy to tell when you are inside a BBQ joint vs any other restaurant. First visit and ordered a pork plate platter with sides of potato salad, coleslaw and added an extra side baked beans. You order at the counter, have a seat, and they bring you your food. I've never had pork barbecue, quite like this, as the pork was chopped so fine that I would call it minced pork. Flavor was OK, but hated the texture. It's soaked up barbecue sauce like a sponge! My husband and I came through town for business and needed a break from the car. We stopped for Gas at Pilot and saw this restaurant next door so we decided to go in and eat a late lunch (2:30 on Wednesday). We were immediately greeted and shown a paper menu where we picked the Big Daddy plate to share. The sweet young lady brought out our food on a metal tray. It was half a rack of ribs, half a smoked chicken, side of slaw and side of potato salad. There were no plates so we ate off paper towels. In their defense, we did not ask if they had plates or anything to eat off of. We assumed if they did they would have brought it with the food. The ribs were fall off the bone tender. The chicken was too dry for our liking. The potato salad is made with red potatoes. Jazzed up with some salt they were pretty good. The slaw was decent. Seems like they have a great location. There was no smoke from an actual smoker. The only thing that made it BBQ was the sauce. Our experience would have been much better had we been given plates and if the meat was actually smoked. I was debating between giving Smokin Pig a try or going down to Evan's in Villa Rica. I decided to try Smokin Pig because it was a BBQ joint I have never tried because all BBQ joints offer different flavors. Plus it was a 4 and a half stars overall. Smokin Pig is conveniently located off the exit to GA Hwy 100. It has a sasquatch theme going to it plus a shrine to U-G-L...I mean, U-G-A. To my dismay, Smokin Pig doesn't offer combo meat plates. I asked if I could add a rib to my pork plate and the reply was that half a rack cost a $1 less than a rib plate. Also, when I told the girl at rhe counter I had never ate there and asked her what's good, she said she never has and didn't like smoked meat. Well....it's her BIG-TIME loss because she should start eating here because it was delicious. I went with a pork plate with mac and cheese and potato salad. The pork was chopped, tender, and seasoned well. The potato salad is superb! I don't know how they make it but it is creamy and tangy. The mac and cheese is homemade with globs of cheese mixed in. I thought the potato salad and mac and cheese were worth eating without the pork! There are 3 sauces: mild, spicy,, and mustard. The boring mild run of the mill tomato base found on the table was meh but the spicy and mustard that you have to ask for is worth every bite. The spicy is the mild tomato base with something extra. It really isn't spicy...maybe a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being very hot. However, the mustard sauce might be one of the best BBQ sauces I've ever had. I just couldn't get enough of it! It was a little sweet, little spicy, and full of mustard goodness. This mustard is worth drinking! Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! We stop in Tallapoosa GA almost every weekend, since it's the first exit where Alabama residents can get lottery tickets . Driving back to Florida and love BBQ so decided to try Smoking Pig. Staff was friendly, food was prepared and served quickly. I ordered the brisket plate and my wife the smoked chicken. The smoked chicken was moist, tender and had a nice smoke ring and lots of flavor, delicious. The brisket plate had thinly sliced beef and was very tender, however the meat looked and tasted like roast beef not brisket. It had no smoke ring nor smoky flavor. Real brisket has a particular texture to the meat and is cut into thick slices and certainly will have a smoke ring as it's slow smoked for hours. In my opinion, this was fake brisket. FYI: I have smoked brisket at home for several years now and I can really appreciate when I find a smoke house that takes the time to prepare/serve a brisket properly - this is not that place. On my way to Birmingham I stumbled across this place. First off...the inside is CLEAN and the staff is FRIENDLY. Had I not been determined to stay in front of traffic I would have eaten in. Picnic style benches with plenty of napkins and extra sauce on every table made it appealing. I had Hickory Fries with chicken & they were flavorful and filling! 3 people ate off of those fries. They were even better reheated in the oven with some of their spicy BBQ sauce on top! I also had the Thai Chili & the BBQ Smoked wings.
