Awesome BBQ! I had the 2 meat combo with chicken and turkey. For my two sides, I chose beans and rice. My Love got the large order of ribs (5 nice-sized ribs). The turkey was full of flavor and not dry AT ALL!! Win. Chicken was okay, great flavor but very small thigh piece was all they gave me. Ribs were fabulous. i had the two smaller ribs and they were a little tough but the large ribs were awesome. I think the prices are a little steep for the portion size but the flavor of the food is worth every penny. For both of our selections, the total was $29.25. Only real complaint is that the Texas toast was cold and toasted earlier in the day. Also, They only gave us one piece of toast per person. Should've got an extra side . Stopped for lunch. It's a roadside stop with amazing BBQ. You had a choice of grab and go, sitting in their picnic area or eating in your car. It seems like a major place to go for everyone in the area. We chose the car instead of dining with flocks of birds. Apparently they like the food here too! ...the aroma from the smoker was wonderful. We had the pork sandwich with Memphis sweet sauce and a side of baked beans. Mixing them gave another dimension to the flavors also. No indoor seating but outdoor seating had the old farm shack feel since they were all made out of tree stump. We have been fans of Smokin D's for years we usually pick up from the other location. We were hungry and nearby and I was craving some of that white sauce and smoked chicken. We each ordered a dinner me the chicken and my hubby had the pork. They were predictably out of brisket as it was later in the day. I was ok with that again I wanted that white Barbeque sauce which I feel is best on the chicken. We were served up with smiles and went away with our booty! Man oh man that stuff is super delicious! I was not enthralled with the sides we had coleslaw and beans and hubby had rice. The beans are not bad they are a mix of red beans black beans & pintos in a sweet and spicy Barbeque sauce.( I am Not usually impressed with the sides but the meat is worth it!) the slaw Is very minimal vinegar flavored and I did not try the rice but my husband said he had to mix it with the beans for flavor. I still don't care it's a four star chicken and white sauce place! The pork is good too but the chicken and white sauce is so good!! I have not ordered Barbeque chicken for many years from anywhere but here. I was told about Smokin D's BBQ from a friend and I truly value his opinion when it comes to food. My wife reached a break in her studies so we decided to make a trip to St. Augustine so we could start off with some BBQ before heading to the Old Historic District to explore. We arrived and the smell was incredible. I was now getting really excited but as we were in line being told how great the food is by the locals, we were informed it was CASH ONLY and that is a detail my friend left out. We walked to the convenience store next door and their ATM fixed my CASH ONLY needs. lol We returned and after a short wait we were placing an order for the BBQ picnic + 2 more meats so we could try all of them. Pork, Turkey, Brisket, ribs and chicken. It comes with all three sides which are D's Smokin Beans, Cole Slaw and Southern rice. Also included are two pieces of Texas Toast. We also sampled ALL of the sauces... Ribs - 3 - Great flavor but under-cooked and tough. Another hour would have done them justice. Brisket - 3 - Excellent flavor but tough. The brisket could have used about 2 more hours. Chicken - 3 - One piece was just right and the other was dry. Smoke flavor was great. Pork - 3 - Nice flavor but some pieces were tough and others were cooked just right. Turkey - Not enough smoke flavor and too much salt. Was cooked perfectly. Beans - 5 - Unique mix of beans with a great flavor. I really liked their beans. Coleslaw - 3 - Just your average run of the mill coleslaw. Rice - 3 - Cooked right but basically just plain rice. Nothing really special. Texas Toast - 5 - Just what you'd expect to get in Texas. Sauces Memphis Sweet - 4 - If you like a sweet sauce, you will like this one. Texas Heat - 3 - Not as much heat as I have found at most Texas BBQ joints. D's House - 5 - Definitely a Georgia influence and it had a nice flavor. My favorite of them all. Carolina Vinegar - 4 - Pretty close to what I have found in the Carolinas. Well done Alabama White Sauce - 4 - An interesting flavor that went well with the turkey and pork. The flavor of the meat impressed me BUT it appeared that the pit master was having an off day because the ribs, pork and brisket were not done. Had someone checked the doneness of the meat, they would have discovered that. I have to say that serving under-cooked BBQ is a big no no. The beans were a home run but the other sides are just OK and nothing special. The service is great and the place has a charming area outside to dine but basically they are a to go joint. If I was in the area I would give them a second chance based on the flavor BUT was it worth the hour and a half drive for what was served to me TODAY??? NO! If you search Yelp® for BBQ or Barbecue or Barbeque or even HOW IS BABBY FORMED near St Augustine, FL, what you'll get is a list of the crappiest chain joints in Florida, but NO Smokin' D's. What a shame that Yelp's search feature is so poorly coded that it's unable to find what is clearly the BEST barbecue in the area. Florida's not really known for BBQ. We have a lot of crappy chains like Woody's and Sonny's and Bono's and Sonny Bono's and Chaz's and Cher's but not a lot of what I would consider the real deal. Florida has no BBQ identity. There's no such thing as "Florida BBQ". It's sort of odd, especially in the North, since it's so friggin' South! All you southern purists are going to start bitching and moaning at what I have to say, but some of the best BBQ I've ever had was in NY and Los Angeles. Allright allright, LISTEN... You can STFU you backwater hicks. You've never been 2 miles out of your county so you can't say shit. I've been all over the south and midwest. Texas, Kansas City, Chicago, the Carolinas. I've had the best and the worst, and it you want consistently excellent BBQ, hit the big cities, bring your #2 pencils and notepads and prepared to be schooled. In a real city you can get ANYTHING YOU WANT. You want par-boiled baby balls in LA, I can get it. Clubbed baby seal sushi in NYC, comin' up! That's just how it is. Now, having said that, I will say that the BEST of the best BBQ in the USA is in the South. Personally, I'm particular to the low country stuff served up at places like Melvin's and Bessinger's near Chucktown, SC. But anyway, BACK to the review of Smokin' D's. I've been looking for some decent BBQ since moving to FL over a year ago and all I've found is shit. But now it looks like I have finally found a place worthwhile. These people clearly prepare their food with love. The menu is simple, the way it should be. There's absolutely no pretense. They put all of their heart and soul into it. Clearly they are experts at what they do. We took our cue (haha) from Bill M. and got the 'bama chicken and the meat plate. OMFG! The worse thing I could say about the brisket was that it was a little dry, but it was late in the day and I drove 1/2 hour to get it. Even so, it was delicious, especially with the Texas heat. The Pork was great, tender and moist, with their house sauce. All in all the best I've had here. I will go NO WHERE ELSE for BBQ while I'm here. Florida, I hate you. But places like Smokin-D's helps me stay sane in one of the most insane states in the country. read more
