East and West Seeks BBQ Best on a road trip. Driving south in central Florida on a beautiful Sunday (March 15) and hunger hits. Search Yelp and find Berndt Ends BBQ in nearby Palatka. Perfect. Good rating, reviews look great, timing perfect. My mouth began watering in anticipation. We drive through Palatka and find Berndt Ends....CLOSED. We found someone out back and were told that they had a catering so they closed. No sign, no notice on the door or on the web, just disappointment that we couldn't try them out. Loved the looks of the joint. Loved the name (the owner/pitmaster). Loved the reviews. Just didn't get to love the 'Q. I would suggest a call ahead if you are traveling or not very near to this place. Rating? How? I guess I'll rate it 3 stars and hope someday to get back there and let them prove that they are a 4 or 5 star joint. read more

The food at Berndt Ends is stellar. I have had a number of their dishes (ends, brisket, ribs) and even purchased a smoked turkey from them at Thanksgiving which was the best turkey I've eaten ever! However, the service from their wait staff has consistently been unsatisfactory. At least 4 times (on different days and times) I have sat in their front dining area waiting to place an order, only to be turned away after waiting 20-30 minutes. One time I waited even longer. The young lady took the 3 orders ahead of me and told me she would come back for my order. I waited another 15 minutes. She then returns but only from the kitchen door to loudly announce to me and the 3 new parties that just entered the restaurant that "we are no longer taking orders for take-out". I was taken aback at how this was handled because she knew I had been waiting a while and just ignored me. I understand that things get busy but this could be handled so much better. How about a sign on the door so I know upfront and don't waste 30-40 minutes of my day waiting for nothing? I left Berndt Ends that day and vowed never to return until they get staff that is friendlier and better suited to serve. This area in Florida has plenty of smoked meats and barbecue to choose from. While Berndt Ends sells a stellar product their customer service is so lacking, I would rather go to a place that is almost as good where I am treated fairly and, dare I say, even nicely. I'm not asking for someone to fawn all over me. And I understand you all get busy. I have waited tables myself and get it. Just be a little friendly and fair. I will understand. read more

Great little gem, just off the roadside, plenty of parking and seating (indoor/ outdoor/ open air). Good prices. Came on a Tuesday at lunch time and enjoyed the iced tea, 1/4 chicken (from the by the pound menu), "Crack" Mac and Cheese, and Datil pepper cornbread. The chicken was soooo moist and perfectly cooked, with a nice dark toasty skin. My companion's chopped pork sandwich was also Incredibly moist and well made. The cornbread muffins were adorable, tiny and their spice will creep up on you :) + great with butter. Waitress was polite and attentive. The area even had outdoor string lights and a fire pit for ambiance in the evenings. read more

Been passing this place going into Palatka and decided to pull in on 11/16. Definitely a great spot to stop in. It was a Sunday and wasn't too busy. Had the deviled eggs first and oh my, delicious. Wanted the poppers but they were out, just means we'll be back to try them. The brisket was so tender just the way I like it. My husband's sandwich was very tasty too. My daughter and grand children are visiting and we all wanted bbq. Arrived at bernt ends at 5:30 and they were closed. Supposed to serve until 8 pm. Would not operate a business in that manner. Will not waste my time going there again read more

Such a treasure! The husband and wife who own this place are so kind and are amazing cooks. The chicken was the best I've ever had. Brisket was awesome too--So moist and huge pieces. We loved all the sides - especially the green beans! Super clean and yummy-- worth the drive! Go eat at this great locals spot! read more

To start, I read the reviews and as always there are good and bad but decided to try them anyway. I ordered a large sausage platter and a large pulled pork platter with 2 sides. Hubby said the sausage was good but my pulled pork was nothing to write home about. Not much flavor. The greens were good. The mac and cheese was disgusting. Pasta was mushy mixed with something not sure what but didn't taste like cheese. The coleslaw was not bad. I ordered the corn bread muffins (very small) and they threw them in with my greens!! They were so soggy I could not eat them. Also the size of a large order is the size of a regular order at other BBQ places. Was a waste of $40. There are way better BBQ places around (maybe not in Palatka) but I will not return to this one. They also charge a fee for to go orders. read more

Passing through on my way to Lake County and looking to take some BBQ home for supper. I got the sampler platter with 4 meats, 3 sides, Texas toast and two drinks. I added two additional meats and a turkey sandwich since we're feeding 4. All the meats are so tender, juicy and delicious! The owner gave me a sample of turkey and brisket.
