I'm a first time shooter (other than a BB gun as a kid). I had a two hour lesson with Coach Don and I'm really pleased with the amount of education and hands-on instruction I received in such a short amount of time. We spent the first hour of the lesson on classroom instruction. I learned the history of the most common hand guns used, why someone would prefer one type over another, the differences between single and double action, and how different handguns suit different individuals. Don made sure I felt confident handling the different types. By the time we entered the firing range, I had learned proper stance, range etiquette, how to load a magazine, and the importance of proper technique when racking the slide. But the most unexpected thing I learned was that my nervous system (as a first time shooter) would be taxed. He explained that my first shot would likely be my best shot because once I knew what to expect I would begin to anticipate and I would have a bit of a "fight or flight" response. I never would've expected that and so when it happened, I was well prepared. Even though most people know to expect the sound and the kickback of a weapon, you're not really prepared for it if you've never done it before. Sure enough, my hands got shaky, my breathing got shallow my heart rate raised, but he coached me on how to relax and breathe through it. I was pretty proud of how well I did and I really look forward to my next lesson! read more

Since moving from Orange County I e been looking for a new indoor range to start practicing at and someone suggested Smokin Barrel. I'm glad I listened to their suggestion as it's quickly become my favorite indoor range to practice at. They have a wide selection of firearms in the main shop and a decent selection of accessories for firearms, they're the only shop I've been to in the area with PDP mags on the shelves. They also have a good selection of firearms for rent on the firing lanes. Their staff are also very helpful and friendly. I've been there a few times and a younger guy named Sebastian has helped my newer friends improve their shooting with various tips about their grip and whatnot. I thought it would be different to take my girlfriend to learn some firearm training to celebrate Valentine's Day and it was! Since this was our first time we needed to take a course on firearms handling and safety, little did we know Nathan, and old acquaintance, would be helping to set up our appointment with the instructor Don. Don was extremely patient with us, brought fun into the training session and was able to show a couple of newbs the basics of safety when handling a firearm. I got the membership at Smokin Barrel because it just seemed easier than paying every time. I go a few times a month and the range is SO NICE! The staff is very friendly, especially range masters Brian and Sebastian. There are a bunch of different programs for target movement and savvy members can even write their own programs (one of my friends did). I haven't tried the simulator yet but I plan to. Also, they sold a gun for me that I hated (Glock 22) because it's so jumpy, and I bought a Colt Grizzly from them which I absolutely love! read more

My wife and I were interested in purchasing a handgun for each of us, permits / licenses, and a location to take our test and have target practice. This place has it all. Not only do they have a wide variation of gun types, ammo, models, calibers, etc., they also have staff that is professional, informed, patient, helpful, and always welcomes many inquiries, no matter what staff member assists your needs. If you want an item that they do not have in stock, they will do their best to get it, while bring transparent with their policies. They also have plenty of indoor shooting lanes where you may "try out" some house firearms, in which you may be interested in shooting, prior to buying, and classrooms for any extra training you want to purchase by one of their in-house professionals. They also keep a back aisle and some sales towers throughout the store, for any accessories you need last minute. The inside is open, clean, neat, organized, and easy to move around. The guns seem to be priced at market value and are available for upgrades and improvements, if desired. Ultimately, we were able to pass our tests, get our licenses, and purchase the right firearms for both of both of us. This place really is a great one-stop-shop! I had a great time utilizing this range for my first visit. They have a lot of technology built into their systems and the bulletproofing is very much appreciated. The Range Master is very sharp and highly skilled. He runs a very disciplined range which is great for safety. However, from a customer service standpoint charging $50 per impact to the apparatus or anywhere above the target line is excessive. I can understand a damage fee, but I watched the Range Master call the front desk on his radio to charge $100 to the lane next to me for 1 impact to the target holder (which is designed to take the impact) and I'm not sure where the second shot hit. A moment later my group and I packed up and left after only being there less than 30 minutes. We're no where near bad shots, but it made us feel like if we broke any non-safety rule that we'd get embarrassed the same way our neighboring lane did. I wouldn't mind going back, just have to ensure those I take with me are experienced shooters. read more

Absolutely top notch! I hadn't shot a firearm for years and brought two of my best friends as a gift. One of my friends being very experienced but still a while since hitting the range and the other only have shot a firearm a few times. From the moment we walked in we were acknowledged and directed to the range where we were greeted and clearly explained all of the rules of the range. I wish I could remember names but the guys that gave us the rundown on loading and unloading but they had the upmost patience and understanding then lead us to the range after we completed the waiver forms. Once in the shooting range we were guided by such patient and knowledgeable employees to make sure we were safe and had the best experience! When we were nearing the end of our session one of the employees even engaged myself and my two friends in a friendly competition by adding target stickers to our paper target and that really was the cherry on top I can't say enough how great our experience was and can't wait to go back! read more

Good place, great accessories and arms selection, however, I think they should keep the "special perks" for recurring members on certain days. Took me 2 years to finally get my wife to come along and get her familiarized and shoot a few rounds with an arm. Finally she agrees and as I'm setting up, a lane over there's some gentlemen mag dumping with timer and all working on their skill set. Now if I was alone I would be all for it! I would join in on the fun and ask for tips on how I can improve. I've been trying to be a steady member there and get to know the guys because I was hoping one day to get that leeway of being able to draw fast, mag dump, and practice reloads all while working on my time. I was in a way happy to see that others were doing it. In this case though I came with a noob (my wife), on the weekend, trying to ease her in get her started. Needless to say it scared the sh!t out of her. We were gone after 15 minutes. I didn't say anything to the staff, paid almost $70 to scare my wife and we left. But just got me thinking, someone should asked if everything was ok being that we were in and out in record time. Maybe moved us rooms or offered a coupon or something for another day. This is more of a notice to first timers and NOT a knock on the staff or the "special perks" offered for regulars which I'm all for, but maybe reserve those perks for the weekdays or slow days and times where it is less likely to have noobies or firsts timers show up (like the weekend) and scare the crap out of them ruining the experience. read more

The staff are all friendly, patient, observant and helpful. In addition to the basic range, they also carry ammo, targets, rental firearms, as well as plenty of retail items. The most important part of any range is safety, and this is where Smokin' Barrel shines. The Safety Officers are watchful and rather than being draconian and overly strict about every possible slip or oversight, they are instead patient and helpful, using a mistake as an opportunity to teach. I really like this as no one is perfect... The prices here aren't cheap, but they are reasonable, considering the quality of the indoor facility. If you come here during busy periods, there can be a brief wait, but it's not bad. I recommend becoming a paid member, which will save wait time and money, in the long run. read more

The broad side of a barn would have been safe down range of me. After helping me find my grip, breath control and targeting tips my grouping was smaller.
