I'm a first time shooter (other than a BB gun as a kid). I had a two hour lesson with Coach Don and I'm really pleased with the amount of education and hands-on instruction I received in such a short amount of time. We spent the first hour of the lesson on classroom instruction. I learned the history of the most common hand guns used, why someone would prefer one type over another, the differences between single and double action, and how different handguns suit different individuals. Don made sure I felt confident handling the different types. By the time we entered the firing range, I had learned proper stance, range etiquette, how to load a magazine, and the importance of proper technique when racking the slide. But the most unexpected thing I learned was that my nervous system (as a first time shooter) would be taxed. He explained that my first shot would likely be my best shot because once I knew what to expect I would begin to anticipate and I would have a bit of a "fight or flight" response. I never would've expected that and so when it happened, I was well prepared. Even though most people know to expect the sound and the kickback of a weapon, you're not really prepared for it if you've never done it before. Sure enough, my hands got shaky, my breathing got shallow my heart rate raised, but he coached me on how to relax and breathe through it. The Staff at this location was great! The Range Guides were so helpful. I took my son here to shoot for his first time and he really enjoyed it. The Range Guide helped him with patience and professionalism. The only issue was a Karen in lane 14 who was a little annoying to see a teen shooting so he ran to his momma and got some other Range Guide to complain. Even when I needed more ammo a staff member who was at the gun sales area left his area to help with my ammo purchase which is great customer service! I highly recommend this Range!!! read more

I had a great time utilizing this range for my first visit. They have a lot of technology built into their systems and the bulletproofing is very much appreciated. The Range Master is very sharp and highly skilled. He runs a very disciplined range which is great for safety. However, from a customer service standpoint charging $50 per impact to the apparatus or anywhere above the target line is excessive. I can understand a damage fee, but I watched the Range Master call the front desk on his radio to charge $100 to the lane next to me for 1 impact to the target holder (which is designed to take the impact) and I'm not sure where the second shot hit. A moment later my group and I packed up and left after only being there less than 30 minutes. We're no where near bad shots, but it made us feel like if we broke any non-safety rule that we'd get embarrassed the same way our neighboring lane did. I wouldn't mind going back, just have to ensure those I take with me are experienced shooters. read more

I thought it would be different to take my girlfriend to learn some firearm training to celebrate Valentine's Day and it was! Since this was our first time we needed to take a course on firearms handling and safety, little did we know Nathan, and old acquaintance, would be helping to set up our appointment with the instructor Don. Don was extremely patient with us, brought fun into the training session and was able to show a couple of newbs the basics of safety when handling a firearm. Since moving from Orange County I e been looking for a new indoor range to start practicing at and someone suggested Smokin Barrel. I'm glad I listened to their suggestion as it's quickly become my favorite indoor range to practice at. They have a wide selection of firearms in the main shop and a decent selection of accessories for firearms, they're the only shop I've been to in the area with PDP mags on the shelves. They also have a good selection of firearms for rent on the firing lanes. Their staff are also very helpful and friendly. I've been there a few times and a younger guy named Sebastian has helped my newer friends improve their shooting with various tips about their grip and whatnot. My wife and I were interested in purchasing a handgun for each of us, permits / licenses, and a location to take our test and have target practice. This place has it all. Not only do they have a wide variation of gun types, ammo, models, calibers, etc., they also have staff that is professional, informed, patient, helpful, and always welcomes many inquiries, no matter what staff member assists your needs. If you want an item that they do not have in stock, they will do their best to get it, while bring transparent with their policies. They also have plenty of indoor shooting lanes where you may "try out" some house firearms, in which you may be interested in shooting, prior to buying, and classrooms for any extra training you want to purchase by one of their in-house professionals. I got the membership at Smokin Barrel because it just seemed easier than paying every time. I go a few times a month and the range is SO NICE! The staff is very friendly, especially range masters Brian and Sebastian. There are a bunch of different programs for target movement and savvy members can even write their own programs (one of my friends did). I haven't tried the simulator yet but I plan to. By the end of our session, my friend was accurately placing rounds on target and smiling from ear to ear. The positive energy at Smokin' Barrel didn't end with the staff. Another woman at the range came up and handed my friend a keychain, sharing words of encouragement and empowerment--exactly the kind of community vibe that transforms first-timers into lifelong enthusiasts. I took my daughter to shoot a new gun she had just purchased. One of the range masters, Mark noticed we were struggling a bit and asked if the red dot had been zeroed. We said no, we just picked it up. He put the gun in a vice, sat down and zeroed it for us in about 5 minutes. He then watched my daughter shoot and came back and gave her some tips and advice. He was really invested in making sure she was shooting correctly. She went from ok to consistently hitting solid groupings. If you have the good fortune of crossing paths with Mark, he is absolutely amazing. This gentleman took a little bit of his time and gave my daughter an incredible lesson in a mere 30 minutes. He instilled her with the confidence that she could shoot and shoot well with correct technique. Absolutely top notch! I hadn't shot a firearm for years and brought two of my best friends as a gift. One of my friends being very experienced but still a while since hitting the range and the other only have shot a firearm a few times. From the moment we walked in we were acknowledged and directed to the range where we were greeted and clearly explained all of the rules of the range. I wish I could remember names but the guys that gave us the rundown on loading and unloading but they had the upmost patience and understanding then lead us to the range after we completed the waiver forms. Once in the shooting range we were guided by such patient and knowledgeable employees to make sure we were safe and had the best experience! When we were nearing the end of our session one of the employees even engaged myself and my two friends in a friendly competition by adding target stickers to our paper target and that really was the cherry on top I can't say enough how great our experience was and can't wait to go back! read more

They had a high demand item in stock before the 2 local gun stores I had deposits down with. The Safety Officers are watchful and rather than being draconian and overly strict about every possible slip or oversight, they are instead patient and helpful, using a mistake as an opportunity to teach. I really like this as no one is perfect... The prices here aren't cheap, but they are reasonable, considering the quality of the indoor facility.
