I haven't always felt confident around firearms. In fact, guns used to scare me. Guns were always around our home growing up, but as a kid, I wasn't allowed near them, didn't have the desire to go near them, and wasn't taught gun safety. So I stayed away from guns. I decided as an adult woman with two beautiful daughters and a hard-working husband (that works long and unusual hours); it was time to put the fear of guns away and learn gun safety and confidence with guns so that I can protect myself and my family should the need ever arise. The decision to carry a firearm for self-defense is a very personal one. I came to a point when I no longer wanted to feel anxious or nervous about making work appointments with potential clients, doing open houses on my own, walking to and from appointments, or just simply walking alone in an unfamiliar area. I wanted to be free from a victim mindset. So, I made a decision that enabled me to go from feeling helpless to feeling empowered. Rex came into my life at the right time! I recently completed the Basic CCW course with Rex. I found out about Rex from a recommendation by a local gun store owner. This is my first time applying for a permit, so I did not know what to expect. Rex teaches the classroom portion on a one-to-one basis and uses his many years of real-world experience to tailor the training to the individual. He answered all of my questions in detail and I had no trouble passing the written test. Next we went to the range for the qualification portion. First we practiced with a laser gun, then we did a live fire session with 3 different handguns. Rex gave me some great tips and I had no trouble qualifying with all 3! I also received instruction about dry-fire practice that I will continue to use at home to sharpen my skills. Rex also shared a lot of valuable information about holsters, cases, etc, specific to my needs. I had a great day and I will certainly use him for future firearm training and permit renewal. I really enjoyed Rex's command of CCW "need to know" knowledge as well as his experience as a law enforcement officer. He provides very detailed, personalized knowledge and can walk anyone through all the in's and out's of being a responsible CCW holder. Just took an 8 hour class yesterday. Rex is fantastic. An excellent teacher with obvious loads of experience. His experience informs the stories and anecdotes he employs to help bring home important points for the teaching he's doing. It's very effective, and makes for a learning environment that's both efficient and entertaining at the same time. That applies to the classroom (his lovely and very comfortable home) and at the private range. It applies to both "book learning" and practical shooting skills. I'm very happy with my results, and I'm looking forward to booking my next class with him. I recently attended CCW training with Rex after being referred by Courtland at Hollow Point Tactical. Let me just say that I am incredibly happy I contacted Rex for this training. The classroom portion of the class was an informative and interactive discussion with lots of real world applicability. He did not rush through the material and certainly did not "teach to the test". As an instructor in another field this is a pet peeve of mine which was definitely not a concern with Rex. The range time was even more outstanding! The class was small (2 students) which provided for not only CCW qualification but one on one instruction that tuned up a number of issue that I was having. Rex was patient, direct, and didn't make either of us feel like an idiot if we were doing something that required attention. Much appreciated as Rex clearly has a ton of knowledge and background. I do not highly recommend anyone without 100% confidence that YOU will be satisfied. That said, I highly recommend Rex for your instructional needs and will be heading back for more training at some point soon myself. You will not be disappointed!! I consider myself lucky to be a customer of 805CCW for multiple reasons that I'll detail here (listed in no particular order); 1) Safety. Rex is the best at making sure that everyone (and I do mean EVERYONE) is safe and nobody goes home with "extra holes" that God did not give you before you started a class. 2) Knowledge. Rex's ability to take his considerable real-life experiences and include them in a wide variety of training exercises results in the student not only understanding their strengths but also where improvement is necessary. 3) Compassion. I can honestly say that in every measurable way, Rex's compassion shows and is repeated time and again. I have experienced and witnessed Rex giving people honest feedback about how well they're doing and pointing out how much they have improved. 4) Tools. Rex brings both "tools of the trade" (targets, dummies, etc.) and teachable / repeatable actions to each class. 5) Flexibly. If your schedule only allows for an hour...a couple of hours...a half day...or a full day, Rex can (and has) facilitated lessons / training activities that can fit these timeframes. 6) Connections. The shooting world (especially taken from the point of view of Ventura County) is pretty small and well connected. While Rex does not have his own range (VERY few vendors do), he does have connections with a wide variety of people who do have PRIVATE ranges. Leveraging their facilities is fantastic and I've met some VERY interesting and skilled people along the way. If you need a contact for buying / repairing something, Rex has a "Rolodex" in his brain and can make recommendations/ connections for you. 7) FUN! Be prepared to have fun. Don't get me wrong, you'll not be the target of any jokes or pranks...NO. Rex is very much a professional yet he makes your time together FUN. 8) Customizable. Whatever you need (one pistol, multiple handguns or long guns) Rex will build a training regiment for whatever you want / need. It's YOUR time and Rex respects and embraces that fact (unlike some other vendors who try to have you fit into their box). I've taken multiple training classes and Rex is by far the first person I call. Before you ask yourself if I'm being compensated or am related to Rex in some way, I assure you that neither is true. My first contact with Rex was more than 2 years ago, as I was submitting my CCW application for the first time. I wanted to connect with a professional trainer that could help me pass my CCW qualification and impart knowledge that I knew I did not have (or thought I did from watching TV / movies). Rex did all this and more for me. So, if matters not if you're a beginner or someone who has years of experience...one thing that I have learned in life is that you can always learn something else.
