Stopped here on a Friday morning with a few ladies. We ordered and our food and drinks and both came quick. Everyone enjoyed their drinks and their food. I ordered a breakfast sandwhich and enjoyed it, but wish they put a sauce of some sort on it. I have also tried their muffins and scones which are delicious. I've been a regular customer at Smokey Row, and one of the things I've appreciated in the past is that they allowed me to bring my own reusable mug. I've done this at least ten times before without any issue. This morning, however, I was told they no longer accept customer mugs due to "germ concerns." This was frustrating and confusing, because it's the first time I've heard of this policy, and it runs counter to the sustainable practices I expect from a local coffee shop. Instead, they're now forcing customers to use single-use plastic or paper cups, which feels like a step backward in terms of environmental responsibility. I enjoy their coffee, but I hope Smokey Row reconsiders this policy. Encouraging reusable mugs is not only more sustainable, it's something many other coffee shops manage safely. read more

My friend and I stopped at this place right as we drove in for a concert. We were starving. We walked in and the vibe was great! There were people everywhere--some dining, others studying, others sitting at the soda counter. It attracts a very diverse clientele, and I loved that! We ordered delicious sandwiches and coffees. On a visit a few days ago, a vegan order was given to my out of state visitor with bacon. My friend picked the bacon aside and consumed her order to save time. On my most recent visit I met with a group of old friends, whose orders were delayed far too long while we waited for tables to be cleared outside and asked staff to do so, to no avail. It is so rare for small/medium sized coffee shops to have drive-thrus. For that reason alone I'd give Smokey Row 5 stars! It's so great to have an option for drive-thru coffee that isn't Starbucks or Caribou. This place has been on my want to go list for over a year, but I was never downtown in the morning or afternoon and stopping on the way home in the evening seemed too late for coffee. I was finally downtown helping with a Habitat for Humanity home build, so took the opportunity to stop here for lunch. Wow, am I glad that I stopped to see what all they had to offer (a lot more than just coffee - see menu pictures) and experience a couple of great items! I was taken aback with the large selection of breakfast and lunch sandwich offerings and felt that they were fairly priced. I started with a Pumpkin Pie Latte (see picture) and was thoroughly impressed - flavorful, yet wasn't overly sweet and heavy. For my lunch I ordered a Rise and Shine (smoked turkey, egg, crisp bacon, provolone cheese and fresh guacamole on toasted ciabatta - see picture). It was fantastic...I highly recommend it. Large central coffeehouse that attracts all of Des Moines. Nice place to gather with a group, study in the corner, meet a date, bring an out of towner, or get a cup of joe one on one with a friend. Food and coffee drinks galore. Ice cream, teas, baked goods, and cafe foods are offered here. The Cheeseburger Soup is probably the most popular food among my friends. And the traditional ice cream is attractive to all those who can enjoy it. Smokey Row offers syrups and all sorts of milks. I do enjoy a nice flavored latte with Oatmilk. Their coffee and espresso beans are ok. I would like to see more plant based options for snacks and food. I typically enjoy a simple loose leaf tea in a tea pot with unlimited hot water refill. Decor is rustic and vintage. Booths and tables and meeting rooms. It draws all sorts of patrons to come enjoy this location. I like Smokey Row but it's not my go to coffeehouse. While other coffee shops tend to have tiny tables for 1 or 2 people at the most, Smokey Row is the perfect place for a group project, book club, or group of friends to hang out. The tables are large and communal and the atmosphere is light and friendly. The drink menu is large, with many changing seasonal drinks! While my go-to is the voodoo chai, today I went with the iced Lucky Latte, one of their seasonal drinks for the spring. I was not disappointed! If you're going to be eating, the cheeseburger soup in a bread bowl is VERY yummy! Just a head's up, they can get pretty crowded on weekends and some evenings. If you're a "Coffee shop working warrior," the majority of tables do not have an outlet by them. Also, it gets a bit chilly inside, so bring a light jacket! read more

I love going to Smokey row. I usually go to the one in Pella but this location is much bigger than Pella's. It is a great atmosphere as a prefect spot to study and meetup w friends. Free WiFi, limited seating due to spacing for covid, and has patio seating. It's kinda cold here, they have the AC up real high. But during IA's humidity season, this is the spot to go to. I personally like their tiramisu and banana smoothie. But they also have tons of coffee and tea options. Food review: Malibu Chicken-nini: it's like a panini sandwich, w chicken. I liked the chips and flavorful salsa that came with it. A great blend paired w colorful chips. The sandwich has avocado, spinach, and cheese. It's a hot and gooey. The misleading issue is that because it's so gooey, the chicken slips out of the sandwich. I'm not sure how that happens, but for some reason that kept happening as I was eating lol read more

This is a huge coffee shop right off the freeway. Easy stop for travelers. We stopped here for breakfast. I had a toasted bagel and husband opted for an Early Riser sandwich. Both were hot, fresh, and good. You order at the counter and take your seat and number where they will deliver your breakfast. Lunch menu also available. I was really tempted to try a cookie but I have a rule that I can't eat cookies bigger than my head. HUGE Rice Krispy bars too. I also had a latte which was good as well. The place was huge with an old fashioned soda fountain bar with stools. Board games are available if you want to hang out. And after I finally got it, it tasted like they dumped 10 packets of sugar in there -- I've never tasted something so disgustingly sweet. Maybe it was to cover up the fact that their coffee tastes like someone pressed Folgers through an espresso machine that hasn't been cleaned in 6 months. The coffee is not even remotely good, and it's clearly not their main focus. This is the complete opposite of "do one thing and do it well." Their menu is too big and everything is bad.
