I stopped here because it is one of the coffee hop locations. The ambiance is perfect if you are just stopping in for a coffee and a chat or if you need to sit and get some work done. The gentleman working was so kind and we had a nice chat while I was ordering. I ordered a caramel iced latte. I could have used an extra pump or two of syrup, but I definitely do like my coffee a little sweeter. My boyfriend really enjoyed it though. We both really enjoyed the espresso. They also have several pastries that are available. They all looked delicious. I ordered one with cream cheese and a strawberry filling which I really enjoyed. my last review was pre-covid-19. I think they're doing a good job in having social distancing within the coffee shop itself with every other table blocked off from use so you can go in and enjoy your coffee. I usually pick a time in mid-afternoon when it's not so crowded too get that extra boost. I still use my coffee house test of asking them to make a dry cappuccino and they didn't know what I meant. Even though I told them exactly that I just wanted an expresso with some foam on the top. I think they are so used to making a cappuccino into latte they just do it no matter what you tell them. I watch them while they were doing it and pointed out they were stirring the the foam into the coffee. After I told them again I think they got it. I took the drink anyway. This is a solid, little coffee shop--right in the heart of Beaverdale. I've stopped here several times throughout the years. The service is always great, and I hardly ever have to wait long in line or to receive my beverages. There is a large, comfy seating area for you to enjoy your drink. I enjoy that about this place; some shops only have a small, cramped area, but I've never felt that way here. I purchased a groupon for Grounds for Celebration and was finally able to use it. I wanted to take advantage of their lunch menu, but unfortunately I was not able to stop by until after 2pm (their lunch menu is from 1030am to 2pm). Thankfully for me, their chicken salad sandwich on croissant is served all day. I ordered it for carry out and tried it when I got home. Their chicken salad sandwich was really good!!! The salad included walnuts, grapes, and celery. It was delicious! I would come back again just for that sandwich! I also would want to try the Cubano sandwich. The cafe itself was really nice on the inside. There was a lot of seating, with nice lighting and a working fireplace. I found it to be quite cozy. Service was friendly and efficient. The cafe also has a lot of pastries, cookies, and other baked goods. I'm looking forward to my next visit. read more

This is probably one of my favorite coffee shops in DSM. It's comfortable and has a good vibe and closes at 9 PM on most days. I love how you can mix and match teas on their tea list because they brew their own tea. They have a house iced tea as well Price: Very reasonable. My tea always costs $1.95 Parking: Easy to find, private lot shared with the stores around Service: Great! The baristas are always friendly although there is only 1 at a time. It sometimes might take longer because of that, but that has never been a problem. Food & Drinks: I've never had their food but it looks like they have a good selection. They even have gelato and have waitress table service from 10:30 to 2 on Monday through Saturday. Other than that, quiche & chicken salad are served all day. I love their teas. Of all the coffee shops I've been to, this place is one of the best. Notes: Great vibe. A lot of groups meet here, but they usually take the bigger tables in the middle of the place. I tend to stay on the perimeters where there are outlets so that's never a problem for me! Gluten-free-ers: They have a good selection of gluten free snacks. Grounds for Celebration is what happens when bored housewives watch too many episodes of FRIENDS and decide to open up their own coffeehouse. Rest assured, these guys know how to screw-up a cup of coffee!! Which is sad because they carry some of the best bean in Des Moines. I'm not going to talk about the Gelato or small lunch items. I'm going to talk about coffee, customer service and environment. Those are the 3 items that matter in a coffeehouse for avid coffee fans seeking a place to call their spot where they can spend several hours per week. That is the purpose of a successful coffeehouse--being part of the community, a social-hub where people know the regulars by first name and where customers hang with friends or plug-in to work/study. Generally, (if a place hits two of the three) they'll still develop a following. Grounds for Celebration fails on all three as detailed below. 1.) COFFEE: Grounds for Celebration brews some of the best coffee in Des Moines. If you're just interested in espresso or drip coffee--stop by and get a cup of the Guatemalan. If you want anything else (lattes/breves/steamers/cappuccino), go elsewhere. There's likely a Caribou Coffee or Friedrich's in the area that will do a better job. 2.) CUSTOMER SERVICE: Remember how I mentioned Grounds for Celebration reeking of bored housewives entering a business venture? Well, the baristas are the teeny-bopper disinterested daughters of said housewives. So, the girls are nice to the elderly because they are at least taught that much, but everyone else will be dismissed by them. They'll take your order, write it down incorrectly, make half the drink (go talk to the other barista whilst twirling their hair over the Gelato case) and then finish your drink after the espresso had been left cooling under the machine for three minutes. No, "Adysson", "McKenzie" or Basic Blonde-Chick don't know what iced toddy is, so don't bother asking when it is 95F outside. 3.) ENVIRONMENT: They're located in strip-malls. Boom. Right there, so now you know not to expect anything authentic or with any pinch of culture. The seats are uncomfortable chairs better suited for outside use, small tables with chintzy decor mismatched like it was bought at various garage sales of people that only shopped at Hobby Lobby & Michael's. SUMMARY: Everything about this place is fake and soulless. The place does have plenty going for it, but nothing making them better than a D- coffeehouse. It is as if these people have never been to a real coffeehouse; it's as if Starbucks is what they thought "cool kids" liked. Grounds for Celebration is clearly made by the owners for the owners, so they can say they have a business amongst their basic friends. (Which is common for Des Moines coffeehouses since they nearly all lack personality and drive.) Grounds for Celebration ought to flesh-out their lunch & brunch menu and expand their Gelato & pastry network. They could be a great café or bakery, but they'll never have the chops or charisma to be a coffeehouse people would want to go to. Their hours are practically setup to be considered a brunch-only place anyways. They could supply other coffeehouses and cafés with their scratch Gelato & pastries, which other coffeehouses could use as an upgrade. P.S.: Dear gosh, ditch the doggy-treats... You're embarrassing yourself, Grounds for Celebration. PRO TIP: If you want to avoid the cluster-F suburban-BS that is Grounds for Celebration, but you still want to try their coffee--they used to be the roaster/supplier for Cup o' Kryptonite on the southside. The Porter brothers who own that coffee shop KNOW how to make a cup of coffee and specialty drink. They are now called Capes Kafé and are downtown; however, it wouldn't surprise me if they still brew Grounds for Celebration coffee. read more

Not a place for espresso drinkers. Sorry. Anybody can roast their own beans. Anybody can buy an espresso machine. Small cappuccinos start at 12oz and by default are in paper cups. Not only does this size dilute the espresso by almost double what it should be the paper cup immediately lowers the temperature of the coffee affecting the taste. I would gladly pay the same amount for a 5 or 6oz drink made properly in a porcelain mug. The atmosphere was fine and the staff perfectly friendly. If you care about coffee as a product (and why wouldn't you care if you're a coffee business?!) you may be disappointed. If you just want a place to gather with friends and drink something, go for it. FYI - I tried two locations, so this wasn't a one-off experience. read more

I ordered a coffee to stay, and instead of saying "enjoy," or "thank you," she only said, "Just so you know, we close at five." It was 2:30PM. Pretty rude. Grounds for Celebration is a nice local location that has good iced coffee drinks and a calm, quiet atmosphere. Seating is similar to Starbucks in size, but with a cozier feel. It's warm inside during the winter months, which makes it a good spot to stop when you're in the area. I've never been in here and felt like I couldn't get work done. The service is very friendly and I get the feeling this place has been here for several years. The barista was friendly and helpful if you are a first timer and don't know what to order. They also have baked goods and bars that are quite good to go along with an iced coffee. Overall I'm giving this place 4/5 stars. read more

Apparently this is the best coffee in Des Moines. Went out of my way to stop here on a road trip. Environment was odd and the coffee was good but not great. The employee working hooked my kids up with a gelato sample, which was nice. I appreciate a local place that does its own roasting. Worked most of the day here on my laptop. Had an electric outlet right next to my table. Enjoyed a white chocolate walnut scone and large dark roast cafe au lait for $6.32. The scone was huge, moist, and delicious with perfect sized walnut pieces, white chocolate chips, and a white chocolate drizzle on top. It was a satisfying breakfast. I think their prices are very reasonable for the quality and amount of food served. The lunches looked great, but I was still full from the scone so I'll try lunch another time. read more

First time visiting (usually a Mars Cafe customer) - I walked in at about 7:30am on a weekday. The place was completely empty, except for a couple guys sitting together inside, chatting over some coffee. I parked smack dab in front of the entrance. I walked in and noticed a barista tinkering with a machine behind the counter. I thought to myself "Nice! Empty place and I'm a little late for work...I should be able to get in and out quickly here." Wrong. I stood there for a 2 minutes and the barista ...most definitely... saw me standing there. But I was ignored. I thought this was really, really strange. Stood there for 2 more minutes...still ignored. 2-3 more minutes later - finally someone else came out from the back and helped me out. I've never felt more uncomfortable and unwelcome at a business. What was the deal here, Grounds For Celebration? Is this how you treat all new customers who aren't regulars? Why was cleaning out the espresso machine more important than helping your only customer in line? 2 stars for the decent coffee. It would be 5 stars if I wasn't rudely ignored.
